A map presented during an event for the season 2 finale revealed the full extent of Gilead. It has largely taken control of most of what was the United States with the eastern, northeastern, and mid-western parts of the country being in Gilead hands (as evident with these particular areas being in a shade of blue on the map), but anti-Gilead/pro-US forces have retained control of the entire West Coast and the Gulf Coast including most of Texas and all of Florida. Rebel forces also control a large tract of territory along the Canadian border and the upper peninsula and part of lower Michigan along with an enclave in New England centering around Vermont, New Hampshire, and parts of Maine and New York state.

As shown in the map in the season two finale, it can be implied that the zones highlighted in blue are territories controlled exclusively by Gilead. This falls in line with the limited details in the novel and the fact that most of the action in the novel took place on the East Coast and because Washington, D.C. was the first to «fall» given the attacks on Congress, the White House, and the Supreme Court.

In the TV series, a scene from the Holly episode inside the MacKenzie household shows three maps along the wall. When searching for the car keys to Commander MacKenzie’s 1975 Camaro, maps can be found behind June on the wall which show the opening, middle and later stages of the civil war between the remnant US and Gilead. The end result being American forces largely pushed off the lower 48 states.

Offred mentions in her inner monologue in Episode 2 that «Guardians of the Faithful and American soldiers still fight with tanks in the remains of Chicago»,^[2] confirming that a war is still ongoing. There are several mentions of an ongoing war in Florida within the first few episodes.

In addition to this, the official United States government operating out of Anchorage has total control over Alaska and Hawaii. Their level of influence over the rebel-held areas of the former US, such as California and Texas, remains to be seen.

Areas euphemistically termed «the Colonies» exist, which have been ecologically contaminated — apparently due to a mixture of industrial pollution, chemical/radiological accidents, and chemical/possibly nuclear warfare. The Colonies are located in what was once the American Midwest and Southwest. Gilead condemned criminals and «Unwomen» to slave labor on cleanup projects in the Colonies, which is essentially a death sentence.

Regions in the West and Midwest indicated in yellow on the map props from the show’s production are referred to as the Colonies. Within these regions are two large sites in Arizona and Missouri that are marked as radioactive, presumably the sites of the Colonies where Unwomen are sent to work. These sites along with two in rebel-occupied regions of California (one south of San Francisco/Bay area and the other spanning Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego counties) correspond to one or more nuclear reactors according to a map from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. This appears to hint at the idea that one or more of these reactors were compromised in some way following the rise of Gilead.

Zones in the dark red and pink, located in both the West, Midwest, and South, are sites of active war between the military forces of the United States of America (along with rebel groups and unorganized citizen militia units loyal to the United States) and the Guardians of the Faith—the army of the Republic of Gilead. In addition to the mentioned rebel areas, there is a large American rebel stronghold located in New England and centered in Vermont and parts of New Hampshire, Maine, and New York State, but it is unknown whether this territory is controlled by a separate entity or by American aligned forces. An opposition radio station (Radio Free America) airs in that region but is broadcasted from somewhere in Canada.^[3]

The number of states in which the former United States of America was divided into has also been reduced in favor of larger districts and wider boundaries.

In the 4th season, it is clear that the former US Military strategic city of Colorado Springs is very much under the control of Gilead. Commander Mackenzie and family relocated to Colorado Springs^{[citation needed]}.

According to Alma, the state of Texas seceded from both America and Gilead as she refers to it as «the Republic of Texas».^[4] Alma also makes an interesting distinction, stating that the Republic of Texas welcomes former Americans and current Gilead citizens seeking refuge. Whether Texas is a nation operating independently of Gilead remains to be seen in the series, yet as previous maps indicate, Texas (under “rebel occupation”) is still largely at war with Gilead. If Alma is correct, then Texas is largely independent, though they have lost large territory up north. June herself expressed doubt over those facts, saying “Do you really want to go that far based on a rumor?”^[4]

In the novel, there are a few details that drift away or simply haven’t been told in the series. In Chapter 14, Offred, looking at the news, sees Detroit under battle and witnesses the round up of the Children of Ham, set to be relocated into North Dakota. The news also mentions Gilead army divisions fighting Baptist guerrillas in the Appalachian Highlands. The novel, like the show, mentions that Gilead is at war with California in Chapter 5, while there is no mention of Chicago being fought after.

Сыны Иакова разработали план по свержению правительства США. Были нанесены точечные удары, в результате которых президент, члены конгресса и верховного суда погибли. Затем очень быстро действие конституции было приостановлено, банковские счета женщин заморожены, а сами они уволены с работы. Стихийные марши протестов были подавлены. Население было в ужасе от жестокости представителей власти, а повстанцы были слишком плохо вооружены, чтобы противостоять силам Сынов Иакова.

Новое правительство начало охоту на неугодных и тех, кто представлял опасность. Туда вошли не только политические активисты и религиозные деятели, но и доктора, представители гендерных меньшинств и просто интеллектуалы. США перестали существовать, а на их месте возникла Республика Галаад.

Все оставшиеся в живых представители США укрылись на Аляске. Остались военные силы, сохранившие им верность. Также возникли несколько групп повстанцев, которые выступали за Америку и против Галаада.

Антиутопия

«Рассказ служанки» — роман-антиутопия Маргарет Этвуд, опубликованный в 1985 году. Этвуд рисует мрачную картину будущего, в котором фактически все женщины становятся рабынями — вне зависимости от того, насколько высокое положение в жестоком обществе будущего они занимают. Отвечая на вопросы читателей, писательница пояснила, что не изобретала садистские методы насилия: в книге Этвуд описывает только те, что уже существовали и когда-либо использовались против женщин.

Библия

Основой жизни нового американского общества становится Библия — правда, в очень вольной трактовке: герои и героини сериала, цитируя Писание, выдёргивают фразы из контекста или вовсе переиначивают их смысл. Например, в сериале звучит фраза «Блаженны кроткие», отсылающая к Евенгелию от Матфея 5:5, но продолжение фразы («ибо они наследуют Землю») опускается. А фраза «Блаженны молчаливые», с помощью которой тётки заставляют служанок молчать, в Библии отсутствует.

Война

Действие сериала разворачивается сразу после гражданской войны, в результате которой к власти приходит радикальная группировка «Сыны Иакова». Террористы верят, что Америка погрязла в грехах и коррупции, от которых её нужно спасти. С помощью терактов фундаменталисты убивают президента, свергают конгресс и отменяют конституцию. Экстремисты проворачивают операцию так быстро, что адекватное сопротивление просто не успевает возникнуть: об этом в сериале рассказывает главная героиня. В ходе гражданской войны Правительство США терпит поражение и теряет почти всю подвластную территорию. Как следствие, с государственного флага исчезают почти все звёзды, кроме двух, обозначающих Аляску и Гавайи.

Галаад

На остальной территории США возникает теологическая диктаторская республика Галаад (или Гилеад, оба варианта верны). Звучное название тоже найдено на страницах Библии, где Галаадом называли историческую область Древнего Израиля на восточном берегу реки Иордан. Новообразованное государство фактически живёт по принципу «запрещено всё, что не приказано», имеет строгую иерархическую систему, а правит им специальный Совет, сформированный из лидеров «Сынов Иакова». А ещё Галаад — это страна с узаконенным патриархатом, ведь только у мужчин есть доступ к образованию, оплачиваемой работе и другим социальным благам. Что касается отношений с другими странами, то диктаторская республика на обломках США — нежеланный гость на международной арене: в сериале неоднократно описываются санкции других западных стран.

Дети

Дети ценятся в Галааде превыше всего. Преступления против них считаются самыми серьёзными (хотя наказывают за всё примерно одинаково — членовредительством или смертью). Беременность становится святой обязанностью каждой женщины: например, когда беременеет служанка, она получает массу привилегий, самую вкусную еду (с ней у страны всё еще проблемы) и лучшую медицинскую помощь, которую только могут предложить врачи Галаада. После родов к ребёнку и жене командора, которая становится официальной матерью, приставляется охранник. Если ребёнок заболевает, его везут в больницу на специальном автомобиле с очень громкими сиренами, перед которым на колени падают все служанки. 

Жёны

Жёны — самая привилегированная женская каста в Галааде. Супруги высокопоставленных командоров не ведут хозяйство, но могут рисовать, вязать или сажать цветы. Смысл жизни жён заключается в воспитании детей, но только единицы из них могут иметь своих собственных. По законам Галаада они носят одежду в сине-зелёных оттенках — и, судя по сериалу, в нарядах допускается небольшое разнообразие (правда, брюки или комбинезоны всё равно запрещены).

Запреты

В Галааде существует масса запретов, касающихся обоих полов. Есть универсальные: например, в тоталитарной республике строго запрещены однополые отношения. Тех, кто решится «нарушить» запрет, ждёт смертная казнь через повешение. Использовать корректные термины в отношении геев и лесбиянок тоже нельзя, поэтому власть вводит странный эвфемизм — «гендерные изменники». В Галааде запрещены сексуальные отношения до брака, но законным может считаться только первый брак. Но больше всего запретов, конечно, касается женщин. Им запрещено носить одежду другого цвета — кроме того, что предписывается «кастой». Запрещено работать, запрещено спорить с мужем. Почти всем запрещено читать: если женщину поймают за книгой или газетой в первый раз, ей отрежут палец, а если второй — руку по локоть. Вообще любые наказания в Галааде связаны с членовредительством: в сериале можно встретить эпизоды, в которых жертвам режима выдирают глаза или отрезают клитор (не переживайте, сам процесс остаётся за кадром).

Иезавель

В Библии Иезавель — это жена царя Ахава, имя которой нарицательным для всех «порочных» женщин. Иезавелем в сериале называют бордель, в котором женщин удерживают силой — и заставляют заниматься секс-работой вместо ссылки в радиоактивные колонии или банального убийства. Конечно, содержание подобных мест противоречит строгим религиозным законам Галаада, но его существование оправдано высокой целью. В одном из эпизодов сериала командор Уотерфорд говорит, что Иезавель «помогает договариваться с иностранными партнёрами» — что тоже говорит о политике двойных стандартов в террористическом государстве.

Командоры

Командоры — мужская верхушка Галаада, отвечающая за все вопросы в жизни террористического режима, от международных отношений до обороны. По правилам экстремистского государства только командоры могут иметь служанок, вынашивающих для них детей: считается, что эти мужчины — носители лучших генов, которые и нужно передавать новому поколению.

Марфы

Марфами в сериале домохозяек командоров. Вероятнее всего, происхождение термина отсылает к легенде о сёстрах Марфе и Марии, принимавших в своём доме Иисуса Христа. Сериальные марфы готовят и убирают, а если в доме появляется ребёнок, то марфы становятся ещё и нянями. Узнать их среди других женщин Галаада можно по светло-серому цвету одежды: в доме они постоянно носят платок и фартук, к которым на улице добавляется шаль.

Неженщины

Стать неженщиной — худшая женская участь, которую в Галааде только можно представить, ведь их отправляют чистить заражённые радиацией колонии за разные прегрешения. Неженщинами можно стать не только за преступления (однополые отношения, убийства, попытка побега), не только за политические убеждения (феминистки, политические диссидентки — неженщины в Галааде), но и за бесплодность. Также туда отправляют всех марф, неспособных работать по дому из-за возраста, и служанок, которые так и не смогли забеременеть.

Очи

Очи — это секретная полиция Галаада, которая следит за соблюдением законов тоталитарной республики. Главная цель любого представителя Очей — это неверные, которых в Галааде обычно без суда и следствия сразу отправляют на стену. Чаще всего эти мужчины носят чёрные костюмы и солнцезащитные очки, водят чёрные внедорожники. А ещё они могут жить в домах командоров, докладывая об обстановке своим непосредственным руководителям.

Приветствия

Язык — ещё один способ угнетения, который переизобрели галаадские фанатики. У мужчин и женщин режима есть особые формы приветствия: фраза «Святой день» (Blessed day) используется взамен «Добрый день», а «Пред Его очами» (Under His eye) — стандартное прощание. Правда, есть и необычные обращения, смысл которых строится вокруг «главного женского предназначения» — рожать детей. Фразой «Благословен плод» (Blessed be the fruit) выражают открытость собеседнику, готовность разделять ценности Галаада, а фраза «Да разверзнет Господь» (May the Lord open) — ожидаемый ответ. Одобрение чего бы то ни было выражают фразой «Хвала» (Praised be).

Служанки — самая почитаемая и одновременно самая угнетаемая категория женщин в Галааде по одной и той же причине: они могут зачать детей. Красный цвет в одежде отсылает к «главному предназначению» служанок: они должны рожать детей командорам и их бесплодным жёнам. Всем «премудростям» этого дела их обучают в Красном центре, который ещё называют «центром Леи и Рахиль». Лея и Рахиль — это сёстры и жёны патриарха Иакова, в истории которых террористы нашли прецедент и основу для сексуального рабства служанок. «И сказала Рахиль: вот служанка моя Валла, войди к ней; пусть она родит на колени мои, чтобы и я имела детей от неё» — написано в Главе 30 Бытия Ветхого завета.

Служанки не имеют права на собственное имя: в Галааде их называют по имени командора, которому они принадлежат. Церемония

Каждый месяц служанки проходят через ритуальное изнасилование, для которого экстремисты изобрели изящный эвфемизм — «церемония». Служанок насилуют командор и его жена, последние держат её за руки в изголовье кровати. Церемонии предшествует коллективная молитва, в которой участвуют все жильцы дома. Другие сексуальные контакты между командором и служанкой запрещены — но на практике этот запрет, как и многие другие, не соблюдается.

Чума бесплодия

С 80-х годов мир накрыла «чума бесплодия»: по неизвестным причинам, женщины стали беременеть гораздо реже — а те, кому всё-таки удалось забеременеть, не всегда могут выносить здоровых детей. Подразумевается, что массовое бесплодие вызвано загрязнением природы и изменением климата: именно эти проблемы и стремится решить радикальное правительство Галаада.

Эконолюди

Эконолюди — рядовое население Галаада, а эконожёны — представительницы самого низкого (после неженщин) класс в Галааде — совмещают в себе роли жён, служанок и марф. В сериале они носят одежду в разных оттенках серого и живут в постоянном страхе оказаться в служанках, считая красную мантию и белые «крылышки» наказанием за «грехи». Читать, писать или работать за деньги им запрещено.

Яснорада

Яснорада Уотерфорд (в английской версии Serene Joy) — супруга командора Уотерфорда. До того как появился Галаад, Яснорада была активисткой и писательницей. В своей книге «Место женщины» миссис Уотерфорд точно описала прообраз тоталитарного государства, в котором женская фертильность становится национальным достоянием, а беременность всех способных на то женщин, — моральным императивом. Её роль сыграла Ивонн Страховски, получив по номинации на «Эмми» в 2018 году и «Золотом глобусе» в 2019.

«Меня зовут Фредова. У меня было другое имя, но теперь оно под запретом. Теперь многое под запретом». Таким монологом начинается первый сезон сериала «Рассказ служанки», заново открывшего зрителю написанный в далёком 1985 году одноимённый роман Маргарет Этвуд. Сегодня стартовал третий сезон.

Действие сериала происходит в тоталитарном теократическом обществе. Сначала мир по неизвестным причинам накрывает волна массового бесплодия. А после внезапного военного переворота к власти приходит радикальная религиозная группировка «Сыны Иакова» и устанавливает свои порядки в бывших Соединённых Штатах, ныне называемых Галаадом в честь исторической области Древнего Израиля.

При новом режиме женщины фактически становятся рабынями: им запрещено читать и писать, ходить на работу, свободно вести сексуальную жизнь. Особо выделяется каста служанок — женщин, способных зачать и выносить ребёнка. У них даже нет права на собственное имя. Единственная их функция — рожать детей для высокопоставленной элиты. Для этого их раз в месяц подвергают ритуальному изнасилованию.

Среди этого ада предстоит выжить главной героине в исполнении Элизабет Мосс. Когда-то её звали Джун, но при новом режиме девушке дали другое, унизительное имя — Фредова (то есть «собственность Фреда»).

Может показаться, что созданный в сериале мир — чистая выдумка, а зрителю в конце очередного сезона остаётся только с облегчением выдохнуть и порадоваться, что ничего подобного не случалось и не произойдёт. Но не тут-то было: после выхода романа Маргарет Этвуд приносила на каждое своё интервью вырезки из газет, чтобы доказать, как близки к реальности события книги.

1. Нормализация насилия

В Галааде физическое насилие над женщинами не считается чем-то неприемлемым. К примеру, тёткам (женщинам высокого ранга, ответственным за обучение служанок) позволено бить своих подопечных или использовать электрошокер, чтобы поддерживать дисциплину. Жёны командоров тоже могут жестоко относиться к своим служанкам. Серена Уотерфорд не раз била Джун, даже когда та была беременна. Ударить проштрафившуюся девушку могут и хранители — стражи правопорядка Галаада.

Насилие в семье в Галааде воспринимается как норма даже на уровне законодательства. Родители имеют полное право наказать ребёнка, муж — жену. Когда командор Уотерфорд обнаруживает, что в его отсутствие Серена занималась важными делами без разрешения, он жестоко карает супругу прямо на глазах потрясённой Джун.

За реальными примерами не нужно далеко ходить. В феврале 2017 года в Российской Федерации приняли закон о декриминализации побоев в отношении близких лиц. Проще говоря, домашнее насилие теперь не считается преступлением. Но только в том случае, если было совершено впервые и не причинило серьёзного вреда здоровью.

Новый закон вызвал в российском обществе бурную дискуссию. Одни говорили, что декриминализация приведёт к ещё большей безнаказанности и приумножит количество жертв бытового насилия. Другие утверждали, что нельзя вмешиваться в семейные дела. Например, ещё до принятия спорной поправки в РПЦ заявляли, что «любовное использование физических наказаний» в отношении детей — право родителей, «установленное самим богом».

2. Тотальный контроль за репродуктивными правами

Дети стоят на первом месте в списке приоритетов Галаада. Поэтому способные родить женщины находятся под пристальным вниманием государства. Эти несчастные девушки лишены одного из базовых общечеловеческих прав — свободно распоряжаться своим телом. Они занимаются только тем, что пытаются выносить и родить ребёнка.

Причём быть матерью в полном смысле этого слова нельзя: дитя после появления на свет отнимают, а служанку отправляют в следующую семью.

За пределами «Рассказа служанки» женщины всё ещё ведут борьбу за свои репродуктивные права. Не секрет, что многие религии до сих пор осуждают контрацепцию. И даже среди самых прогрессивных стран есть такие, где прерывание беременности нелегально частично или полностью. Например, в Польше всё ещё действуют одни из самых строгих законов об абортах в Европе. А в Ирландии разрешили прерывать беременность только в 2018 году.

Как отмечала сама Маргарет Этвуд, сюжет романа — аллюзия на политику повышения рождаемости в Румынии, которую с 1966 года проводил президент Николае Чаушеску. Причём дело не ограничилось только запретом на аборты. Строгое табу наложили даже на контрацепцию. Эмбрионы были объявлены собственностью общества, а женщин принудительно заставляли проходить тест на беременность. Все, кто не мог или не хотел зачать ребёнка, должны были платить «налог на воздержание».

Может показаться, что такая дикость осталась в прошлом. Но не так давно несколько американских штатов, включая Алабаму и Миссури, приняли закон о практически полном запрете абортов. На прерывание беременности не смогут рассчитывать даже жертвы изнасилования и инцеста. Разрешение будут выдавать только в случае угрозы для здоровья женщины или жизни ребёнка.

Реакция общественности не заставила себя ждать. Одетые в белые чепцы и красные мантии жительницы штата Алабама вышли на улицы. Надев униформу галаадовских служанок, они пытались донести до законодателей простую мысль: женщина может сама распоряжаться своим телом. И государство уж точно не должно делать этот выбор за неё.

Хотя в России прерывание беременности разрешено, в целом ситуация пока далека от идеальной. Несмотря на то что аборты официально входят в ОМС, многие общественные организации пользуются лазейкой в законе, согласно которой лечащий врач может отказаться от проведения искусственного прерывания беременности, если это не угрожает жизни пациента. Так в нашей стране появились целые регионы, где женщины не могут свободно сделать аборт. И это на 100% законно.

3. Публичные казни несогласных

В дивном новом мире Галаада любого человека могут пытать или казнить. Причиной становится что угодно: государственная измена, попытка побега, политические убеждения или «неправильная» сексуальная ориентация. «Преступников» казнят публично, чаще всего через повешение или забивание камнями.

Примером подобной жестокой политики может служить военно-полицейский режим Фердинанда Маркоса на Филиппинах. Диктатор одним махом распустил парламент, отменил действие конституции, взял под контроль СМИ. Всех несогласных казнили, а немногих оставшихся в живых инакомыслящих пытали, насиловали и избивали.

4. Военный переворот

В сериале командоры-традиционалисты захватили власть в стране с помощью военного переворота. Причём намерения у них были самые лучшие: они верили, что спасают погрязшую в грехах Америку. «Сыны Иакова», среди которых и один из ключевых персонажей истории командор Уотерфорд, организуют серию терактов, убивают президента и свергают конгресс.

Всё это очень напоминает Исламскую революцию в Иране в конце 70-х годов. После неё в стране многое изменилось, а ношение хиджаба для женщин стало обязательным. Были те, кто пытался сопротивляться, но ничего изменить уже было нельзя.

5. Насильственная передача детей в другие семьи

Система, лежащая в основе Галаада, — отнять ребёнка у женщины и отдать на воспитание в чужую семью — кажется дикой и отвратительной. Но реальные исторические факты порой пугают похуже вымысла.

В 1976 году власть в Аргентине захватила военная группировка. За время режима тысячи малолетних детей похитили из семей. Многие из украденных погибли. Часть малышей пытали. Другие были воспитаны вдали от своих родителей.

Известно, что похищались даже беременные женщины. После родов матерей убивали ужасным образом: сажали в самолёт, снимали всю одежду, делали смертельный укол и выбрасывали за борт живыми. А их детей усыновляли высокопоставленные военные.

6. Чудовищные лагеря для политзаключённых

Худшая участь, которая может ждать в Галааде, — статус «неженщины» и путёвка в один конец до заражённых радиацией колоний. В ссылку отправляются женщины с неверными политическими убеждениями (феминистки) или просто неспособные работать в силу возраста. Обычно заключённые умирают в течение нескольких лет от радиации, болезней и невыносимо тяжёлого труда.

Во втором сезоне сериала бывшие служанки Эмили и Джанин сумели избежать бессрочного заключения в колониях. После теракта, устроенного членами сопротивления, погибло много служанок, и Галаад решил, что в создавшихся условиях нельзя разбрасываться фертильными женщинами. Поэтому с героинь сняли статус «неженщин» и вернули в семьи командоров.

Ярким историческим примером похожей репрессивной системы можно назвать ГУЛАГ. Труд заключённых в СССР рассматривался как экономический ресурс. Причём значительная часть осуждённых попала в лагерь по сфабрикованным абсурдным обвинениям. Иногда достаточно было просто иметь неправильное происхождение.

7. Клитородектомия

Одна из центральных героинь сериала Эмили, получившая при новом режиме имя Гленова, — очень образованная женщина. В прошлом она была профессором цитологии в университете. Свободолюбивая героиня с самого начала не собиралась подчиняться режиму и тайно числилась в составе сопротивления. Но её раскрыли и наказали ужасным образом — удалили клитор. Но сохранили репродуктивную функцию.

Калечащие операции на женских половых органах — вовсе не редкость и до сих пор практикуются во многих странах Африки и Азии, на Среднем Востоке и Северном Кавказе (преимущественно в Дагестане).

Цель этой варварской процедуры — сделать девочку «чище» с точки зрения морали и религии. Ведь покалеченная женщина не сможет получить сексуальное удовольствие, следовательно, будет верной своему мужу.

Конечно, в действительности показаний для этой операции нет и быть не может. Удаление клитора никого ещё не сделало чище или лучше. Напротив, клитородектомия приводит к серьёзным проблемам со здоровьем. Не говоря уже о том, что это попросту пытка — болезненная, жестокая, совершенно бессмысленная и унижающая человеческое достоинство.

The Republic of Gilead, colloquially referred to as simply Gilead or elsewhere sometimes called, by its leadership, the Divine Republic, is the totalitarian patriarchal theocracy that rules over most of the territory that belonged to the former continental United States in The Handmaid’s Tale. The regime that governs it can be seen as the overall antagonist of the television adaptation.

Society and Politics

Administrative Structure

The storyline hasn’t detailed how Gilead’s government and state function precisely, however a theocratic, inner party of men, more appropriately termed a junta called «Committee» appears to be in charge ^[2]. They rule from Washington, D.C., which is the capital of Gilead.

Political maps of Gilead reveal that Gilead abolished America’s federal system of government and states, and has become a unitary republic with a centralized government and the former states reorganized into larger «districts». On a regional level, Gilead is governed by «Councils» as boards of local Commanders.

Gilead borders Canada to the north and Mexico to the south.

Legislation and Politics

Individual civil liberties enumerated in the now-suspended U.S. Constitution have been replaced by a system of duties and privileges implemented in a hierarchy of social classes, with every former U.S. citizen being assigned to a particular class and expected (and/or forced) to fulfill certain roles (see Society and Class System). Much of this legislation is influenced and justified by a rigid, made-up interpretation of scripture. The name Gilead itself is taken from the Bible, referring to several different locations and generally translated as «hill of testimony.»^{[citation needed]}

In particular, Gilead is a patriarchal society, where only men have access to higher education^[3]. Women are not allowed to have titles or deeds to property in their name and cannot have a career unless said career is specifically assigned to them by the Gilead leadership. Men are also the only ones eligible to hold political office.

Women are regarded as second-class citizens as they must submit to the authority of men («Next male of kin»^[3]). Most female classes are forbidden to read or write^[4]. The only women who are still allowed to read and write are the Aunts ^[5], although Aunts are allowed to be literate, they are still inferior in rank to the Wives, who are considered the paramount rank a woman can hold in Gilead.

Some civil rights however are assumed or confirmed to be suspended for good, e.g. freedom of speech (which is considered heresy), freedom of the press^[6], freedom of religion ^[7] and freedom of assembly^[3]. The Eyes serve as Gilead’s political police force and sends spies to detect and punish infringements and political opponents^[7].

Society and Class System

Gilead doesn’t practice general equality before the law; while members of different classes can be sentenced variably for identical «crimes» (see Ofglen’s case), the individual legal position within one social class appears uniform.

Econopeople

As stated by June (in Baggage), this social ‘class’ (or group) contains all former male and married female U.S. citizens who «played their cards right» and aren’t explicitly reassigned into another class. Flashback scenes in Late suggest male Econopeople can keep some of their pre-Gileadean liberties, like holding down a (remunerated) job or owning property; unlike for females, there is no evidence in the story for the existence of male slave labor outside penal colonies.

Since young females in Gilead are expected to marry when reaching menarche^[8], the social class of «Econowives» (as mentioned in the novel) can be seen as a synonym to female econopeople as portrayed in the show. Single men of «low status» are «issued» women by chance^[9].

Children

Legal gender discrimination implies different rights to levels of education for boys and girls in Gilead. In particular, girls aren’t taught to read or write and they leave school when reaching menarche and marrying^[10]. Daughters of privileged families attend a Premarital Preparatory School at this point.

Female Classes

Women are believed to be the «lesser» sex, who should be subject to men. Women’s main purpose in this society is bearing and raising children, which is given particular emphasis due to the possible rampant infertility present in North America at the time. Women are not allowed to participate in the government, be educated, hold property or have a career^[3]. By law, only women can be considered infertile, not men, thus placing the blame for the fertility crisis solely on women. Because of these beliefs, men cannot «factually» be infertile, even if this is the case; to suggest otherwise is heresy^{[citation needed]}.

• Wives are the highest-ranking women. They can issue limited commands to Aunts^[4] and Guardians^[11]. Despite their ranking, the role and lifestyle of wives is more or less ornamental, with no real power other than their authority over household staff and the influence of their husbands. They wear tailored teal / blue / green dresses.
  • PC are previous Wives whose husbands have died. They wear black garments to signify mourning.
• Aunts are tasked with overseeing Handmaids, Daughters, and Unwomen. In this capacity they are allowed to read and write^[5], a ‘special dispensation’ not granted to wives. They can issue commands to Guardians, and are able to report ‘unseemly’ behavior within households, this includes reporting a Commander and his wife (for example, for not conducting a monthly ceremony). Aunts preside over general punishments in Gilead, such as executions and the Colonies. Though they may not live a life of leisure, Aunts arguably have more individual power than Wives and have greater mobility. Prior to Gilead, they were unmarried good women of faith who contributed to the rise of Gilead. They wear brown garments.
• Handmaids are women who are fertile who are deemed to be sinful in some way (June, for example, is a handmaid because she was found guilty of adultery). They wear red garments to symbolize fertility, and also because it makes them more conspicuous. A pregnant Handmaid has an elevated status.
• Marthas are servants, and are expected to live a life of quiet servitude. Prior to Gilead, they were unmarried women of good faith, deemed to be infertile. They wear grey garments, and must wear a veil.
• Daughters are the usually adopted/abducted female children that are raised by Commanders and their Wives. They attend school, but are not taught to read or write. They wear light pink garments.
• Econowives are wives to low-ranking men. They are married women of good faith. Like Wives, if an Econowife is fertile, she is allowed to raise her own children. If an Econowife is widowed, she becomes a Martha or Handmaid (if she is fertile). They wear grey garments.
• Jezebels are prostitutes who are unable to fit into society in some way.
• Unwomen are generally infertile women (though all single women can be demoted to Unwoman) deemed to be sinful like handmaids. They work as laborers in the Colonies, cleaning up toxic waste. Some in lucky numbers end up in the agricultural fields to produce food entirely self-sufficient. Most die of radiation poisoning. It is a fate some say is worse than death, but to others it is the reverse.

Male Classes

• Economan is the standard legal class for male adults, without documented discrimination on marital status.
• Commanders of the Faithful, or Commanders for short, are the apex of Gilead’s male hierarchy.
• Guardians of the Faith, or Guardians for short, are Gilead’s soldiers and uniformed police. Some of them serve as bodyguards and personal drivers to Commanders.
• Sons are the usually adopted/abducted male children that are raised by Commanders and their Wives. They attend school, and are likely expected to become Gilead’s future Commanders. They wear light blue garments.
• Eyes of God, or The Eyes for short, are Gilead’s secret police. Though sometimes seen as legally untouchable^[12], it is unclear if an affiliation defines a specific legal position.
• Angels and Professionals, as introduced in the novels, have not (yet) been mentioned in the continuity of the show.
• Male Unpeople, as documented in the novels, have not (yet) been mentioned in the continuity of the show.

Values and beliefs

The Gilead leadership consists of members of a religious group who believe that their strict interpretation of the Bible is the absolute truth and that in order for people to achieve salvation and live a pure, godly life, they must follow these guidelines. To do otherwise is seen as living in sin, and the guilty must either repent, or be put to death to prevent them from spreading their evil influence to others.

The government propagates a return to «traditional values»^{[citation needed]}, modesty and purity in all areas of life are greatly emphasized, particularly for women, who are believed to be more prone to weakness of character and sin^{[citation needed]}, and therefore to be blamed for falling birthrates at the time. Thus, women are supposed to be subject to their husbands and not allowed to participate in the government, be educated, hold property or have a career. Furthermore, only women can be considered infertile, not men; to suggest otherwise appears to be considered heresy.

Abortion and contraception are considered some of the greatest sins. Doctors who performed abortions before Gilead’s establishment are executed or deported to the Colonies. Fraternization between men and women of different classes is viewed as «fornication»^{[citation needed]} and is punishable by death for all involved^{[citation needed]}. Sex outside of marriage, dependent on the offender’s marital status, is a crime. If the offender is married and having sex with someone not their spouse, it is adultery. If the offender is unmarried and having sex, it is fornication^{[citation needed]}. Both are subject to severe punishments, including the possibility of death. Homosexuality, referred to as «Gender Treachery,» is considered a sin and a crime punishable by death.

Gilead’s leaders are largely using women and minority groups as scapegoats because they can be easily discriminated against. They are also engaged in mass deportation of Jews from America to Israel^[13], cramming them into cargo ships – though in practice, many transport ships simply cut corners by dumping their holds once they reach the open sea, leaving them to drown by the hundreds^[14]. In the novel, Gilead also discriminates against African-Americans, whom they refer to in their religious rhetoric as the «Children of Ham». In the Series, all infertile Jewish women are sent to the colonies while all Jewish men were executed and put on The Wall, and Jewish children were converted and presumably ended up with ‘fit’ parents^{[citation needed]}.

In a flashback scene in the last episode of season 3 showing June shortly after being detained while trying to leave Boston, she witnesses the rounding up of children with Down syndrome and those with disabilities into trucks, heavily implying they’re being lead to their deaths. It shows that Gilead also is intolerant of any child with disabilities, with Rose being one exception.

Whilst some of Gilead’s leaders and founders are implied to truly believe in the regime, it is hinted ^{[citation needed]} that many of them are hypocrites who use Gilead as a means to gain power for themselves. They do not care for its values and ideals at all, and regularly flout its rules whilst punishing others who do so (such as by visiting Jezebel’s for sex with the forced prostitutes there-usually a capital crime)^{[citation needed]}.

National Economy

Gilead is committed to a decarbonized economic model with a goal of significantly lowering and eventually eliminating emissions. Much of its economy is centered around slave labor—specifically its food sources (there is much mention of the «Agricultural Colonies» where prisoners are sent to do farm work). Foreign imports is limited to vehicle parts, certain consumer goods and a few covert military imports. Gilead exports food to most countries that are friendly and had been hostile to the United States due to the latter former Sanctions prior to the President’s Day Massacre.

It is implied as soon as Gilead rid itself of women’s rights, Gilead nationalized all remaining properties and bank accounts belonging to US citizens, US corporations and foreign nationals including major foreign corporations. The latter led to international sanctions due to no compensation and no ability to transfer money back to their own nations plus their own nationals being born on US soil. A few years later Japan and Republic of Gilead would resolve seizure of Japanese assets plus their properties and would see Japan lifting its sanctions on Gilead leading to Tourism to Gilead from Japan.

It has been mentioned several times that the Gilead economy is weak and suffering, not only due to a lack of international recognition but also due to the war. There is little information about how the war has progressed except that Chicago has been retaken, but it can be assumed that Gilead’s resources have run dry without access to California, the West & Gulf Coast as well as the absence of Texan oil, insinuated to be under the new authority of the Republic of Texas that is still fighting Gilead. Fred Waterford mentions how weak the country’s currency has become in Season 1, while certain items, such as oranges and coffee are not readily available.

Crime & Punishment

 See also: Laws in Gilead (Main article) The law is absolute in Gilead, as well as in the Colonies. Any rule-breaking or subversion committed either in Gilead or the Colonies must be reported and those who committed them are harshly punished. Criminals are often executed and their bodies displayed on the Wall as a severe warning; the Eyes also use excessive torture and other brutal interrogation tactics on their prisoners. Citing the state’s twisted interpretation of biblical verses, punishments often include amputation or mutilation.

Laws on religion

All citizens, including those sent to be worked to death in the Colonies, must follow only Gilead’s own official version of Christianity. No other religion or belief system is tolerated; as Gilead rose to power, those of other faiths and of other Christian denominations were forced to convert under threat of torture and execution. In an episode it is said that Jewish rabbis and Jews in general are sent to the colonies or killed except for fertile women^{[citation needed]}, while in the books it is stated that Jews in general were dumbed into the Atlantic via boats, originally set for Israel. A Jewish man was hanged on the Wall in an episode in Season 1^{[citation needed]}. In one episode where June & others enter a church, a sign remains in front, showing officially banned religions, including Judaism, Islam, Sikhism, Buddhism and more (including other Christian denominations).

In Season 2 Episode 4, June is taken to the Wall where Omar lays dead and hanging and labeled with the Islamic crescent, also demonstrating that large number of Muslims were/are persecuted by the regime.

It is stated throughout the series that many other Christian denominations are persecuted and not recognized by Gilead. An example of which is an empty house Serena Joy and Olivia Winslow walk through. When Serena asks about the previous owners, Olivia claims they were Baptists. In another instance, Moira states that Catholics were excellent at forging passports for American refugees, showing that Catholicism is not tolerated either.

Executions

Executions are referred to as «Salvagings» and are held in public. People are executed by hanging, with Handmaids being given the rope to hang the condemned together, thus sharing in the «responsibility» of punishing the wicked ^[15]. The Handmaids are also forced to stone people and beat people to death for various crimes including rape and endangerment of children^[9][16]. Isaac and Eden were executed for adultery by being drowned. Those that are spared execution can be sent to the toxic Colonies, where life is short and brutal. The Colonies are often polluted by rubbish and radioactive waste, and those sent there are tasked with cleaning up, eventually falling ill and dying slowly and painfully. The idea of a pure, moral society that lets «precious» children grow «in a healthy environment»^[18] gained popularity as ecological disasters accumulated, a fertility crisis worsened and birth rates continued to decline, resulting in a common religious revival in the U.S.. Around this time, the «pious» Sons of Jacob movement began to grow in popularity as American society became increasingly radical as a response to these various issues. Newspaper clippings indicate a growing tolerance for violence against the LGBT community (“Still no arrests in raid on gay nightclub”) and right-wing demonstrations at abortion clinics ^[6], as well as dwindling resistance against government clampdown on civil liberties (“Remaining Privacy Sanctions Lifted”, «Another night of protests”))^[19]. In addition, laws are passed which privatized social services^[20] and restrictions on birth control are implemented^[18].

Political Overthrow

Flashbacks document the start of the Gileadean theocracy with an act of false-flag terrorism at the national Capitol and the White House. Specifically, the attackers succeeded in bombing the White House and firing on the US Capitol building, resulting in the deaths of the (unnamed) US President and most of the cabinet and US Congress members^[21]. The National Guard was then called in and martial law was declared^[22]. Plans for a similar attack on the US Supreme Court are mentioned^[4]. Surviving civil servants later confirmed the government would «continue to function»^[21]; flashbacks show a proximity of this government to members of the Sons of Jacob^[4].

June states in a retrospect that it was «them» (the Sons of Jacob) who attacked Congress and «temporarily» suspended the constitution^[3], which is confirmed in the flashbacks of A Woman’s Place), but originally the government pushed the narrative that “terrorists” (insinuated to be Islamic terrorists) were responsible for the attack.

Rise of Gilead

Although the terrorist attack effectively decapitated most of the U.S. government and supervisory authorities, civil servants confirmed to the Boston Globe a capable government, in which the Sons of Jacob movement apparently succeeded to increase influence^[23], during a period of martial law in which the U.S. Constitution was suspended «to chase terrorists^[3]«.

The regime restricts internet access, June mentions that state-supported ‘decency codes’ censored online material^{[citation needed]}. Travel restrictions were imposed and borders were closed.^[24] A law forbidding women from owning property is declared and American women’s bank accounts were frozen; their wealth was transferred to the accounts of their husbands, fathers, or closest male relatives. Working women were dismissed from their jobs: A new paramilitary force named Guardians systematically cleared women out of all places of employment. Initially there were protest marches and demonstrations against these actions but they were met with violent assault by the emerging government’s paramilitary forces^[3].

Divorce and homosexuality were outlawed; existing divorce contracts and same-sex marriage licenses were retroactively nullified. As these policies take effect, people who run afoul of the new laws begin to flood American airports in an attempted mass exodus. A scene at Boston’s Logan Airport depicts a full-scale military occupation of the airport, with families being separated by immigration and ICE officials as crowds storm the airport in an effort to flee the country^[24]. Moira mentions to June that her fiancé, Odette, was rounded up in the “dyke purges,” ^{[citation needed]} suggesting that the rising Gileadean regime rounded up gay and lesbian people and killed them or sent them to the Colonies.

Some American government, civilian, and military officials survived the coup and fled to Canada, to the U.S.’ two outlying states of Alaska and Hawaii or elsewhere. A new capitol of the U.S. is declared in Anchorage^[25]

An official proclamation of the «Republic of Gilead» is implied but not shown: When June’s family tries to flee after women’s assets and finances were liquidated, they’re told that American passports are useless,^[26] insinuating that by that time, the new regime already started using own travel documents.

Media in Gilead

The media and the news are strictly state-run, heavily censored, and often include propaganda to promote the ideals and values of Gilead, whilst demonizing their enemies^{[citation needed]}. To discourage anyone except Males and Aunts from reading and writing, public writings or names of any kind, including shop signs, are removed. Information is instead relayed by signs with pictures or pictograms. Anything secular is banned outright and anybody regardless of class and rank found in possession of such items are punished severely, up to and including execution^{[citation needed]}.

Foreign Relations

The series leaves geopolitics in the background and the details of Gilead’s contact with the outside world are mostly a mystery.

However, Serena Waterford mentions that Gilead is currently under economic sanctions imposed by the U.N., presumably for human rights violations and the overthrow of the American government. Fred Waterford mentions that Gilead is not recognized as a ‘sovereign state’ by other countries. Scenes in the series depict sparsely-stocked shelves in grocery stores; oranges (presumably because Gilead has no control of Florida) and ‘real’ coffee are commodities. These austere conditions suggest that Gilead is suffering from a lack of trade as a result of global sanctions.

Much of Gilead’s relations with the outside world are depicted through the limited interactions between Canada and Gilead, the latter’s immediate neighbor to the north.

Canada does not have official relations with Gilead and its government maintains a close alliance with what is left of the United States, if the presence of a U.S. consulate in Toronto is any indication. Canada accepts refugees fleeing from Gilead, although many are relocated to other countries; the United Kingdom is mentioned as being one such country and there is a mention of several British «Save the Women Societies» working on behalf of female refugees from Gilead.

Newscasts mention that Canada is still recovering from a loss of trade with the fallen United States, and consequently it would appear that certain elements within Canada had sought the possibility of some trade with Gilead or an easing of sanctions but these efforts failed. Canadians find themselves in a difficult diplomatic situation. They are home to a large number of American refugees to U.S. military personnel and are well-aware of Gilead’s human rights abuses, but they are also trying to avoid open conflict with their southern neighbor.

Mexican diplomats have visited Gilead although the success (or lack thereof) of that meeting is never explicated, though it is insinuated that previous diplomatic missions were a success through the mentioned importation of chocolate by Eden. A Swiss diplomat acting as an neutral intermediary between the governments of Canada and Gilead describes the latter as a ‘black box,’ which is ‘extremely powerful, militarily,’ suggesting that the outside world has little knowledge of the Gilead’s inner workings.

It is also stated during a news broadcast on Radio Free America that China and India are financially aiding the U.S. Government-in-exile (based in Anchorage, Alaska) and Luke Bankole reads that British and Canadian military forces are conducting exercises near the Canada-Gilead border, indicating that the outside world regards Gilead as a rogue state.

By Season 4. Gilead does maintain a Representative office in Canada and maintain trade ties mainly to consumer and products of Food and Fuel. Automotive parts are also imported into Gilead to keep vehicles maintained. Gilead maintains some similar ties with much of the world at a level that Visas to Gilead are only for Business people and their families and are escorted by minders employed by the Eyes It also allows foreign diplomats to visit and probably receives military weapons from other countries on a limited basis. Since Gilead was also illegally formed, all imports are usually paid for by cash by a unknown currency possibly a successor to the US dollar after the US Dollar and foreign currency reserves were spent.

Within Season 5, Serena Waterford revealed that recognition efforts of Gilead in South America are stalled, while Venezuela has expressed interest in the Handmaid system alongside Mexico in Season 1. Serena in Episode Four attempted to reach out to various nations, including Venezuela and Germany before being shut down. In the aftermath of the botched air raid on Hannah’s Wife School, Russian, North Korean & Chinese diplomats congratulated Gilead on their victory.

Other Facts

Gilead’s names for shops, streets and certain concepts or practices are often derived from scripture. The name Gilead itself is taken from the Bible, referring to several different locations and individuals and generally translated as «hill of testimony.»

Inspiration

As Margaret Atwood has explained in various interviews, the «Sons of Jacob» and the «Republic of Gilead» they created, cynically don’t actually believe in their own religious propaganda – almost every member of Gilead in a position of power, such as the Commanders, is at various points breaking their own rules, or expressing that they are simply using this as rhetoric. Atwood didn’t conceive of Gilead as a Christian totalitarian regime, but a totalitarian fascist regime rising in the United States which happens to use some empty vestiges of Christianity to justify itself^{[citation needed]}.

Atwood looked at the rise of various totalitarian fascist regimes throughout history and concluded that it always rises around some central trappings of national identity, and that in her estimation, the national character of the United States has always been shaped by religious movements. Similarly, Nazi Germany used trappings of past rhetoric about prior Germanic empires such as Charlemagne’s Carolingian Empire and the pre-World War I German Empire or latched onto pre-existing European discrimination policies against disempowered groups (Jews, Roma, homosexuals, left-wing/far-left Social Democrats and Communists, anti-Nazi Germans etc.) – but fundamentally, this was just a convenient scapegoat for what was at heart a hyper-nationalist junta that wanted to seize power for itself. Atwood tried to imagine what a totalitarian regime would look like if it took over the United States, and as the saying goes, «When fascism comes to America, it will come carrying a cross and draped in the Stars and Stripes.»^{[citation needed]}

Atwood also said that Gilead was partially inspired by the Religious Right’s reaction in the 1980s to the Women’s Rights movements of the 1970s, during the Reagan years. In particular, Atwood was reacting to large-scale but baseless propaganda being circulated by hard right-wing religious groups that abortion and contraception access was leading to a «white genocide,» and that the birthrate among White Americans was sharply declining — despite the fact that there was no evidence to support this, and that census data proved it to be blatantly incorrect.^{[citation needed]}

Atwood’s vision of Gilead also draws inspiration from the «utopian idealism» present from 20th-century communist regimes such as Pol Pot’s Kampuchea (aka Cambodia) and Nicolae Ceausescu’s Romania as well as earlier New England Puritanism, which held a new, «pure» society could be created in a short time (often leading to massive losses in life).^{[citation needed]}

The Republic of Gilead, colloquially referred to as simply Gilead or elsewhere sometimes called, by its leadership, the Divine Republic, is the totalitarian patriarchal theocracy that rules over most of the territory that belonged to the former continental United States in The Handmaid’s Tale. The regime that governs it can be seen as the overall antagonist of the television adaptation.

Society and Politics

Administrative Structure

The storyline hasn’t detailed how Gilead’s government and state function precisely, however a theocratic, inner party of men, more appropriately termed a junta called «Committee» appears to be in charge ^[2]. They rule from Washington, D.C., which is the capital of Gilead.

Political maps of Gilead reveal that Gilead abolished America’s federal system of government and states, and has become a unitary republic with a centralized government and the former states reorganized into larger «districts». On a regional level, Gilead is governed by «Councils» as boards of local Commanders.

Gilead borders Canada to the north and Mexico to the south.

Legislation and Politics

Individual civil liberties enumerated in the now-suspended U.S. Constitution have been replaced by a system of duties and privileges implemented in a hierarchy of social classes, with every former U.S. citizen being assigned to a particular class and expected (and/or forced) to fulfill certain roles (see Society and Class System). Much of this legislation is influenced and justified by a rigid, made-up interpretation of scripture. The name Gilead itself is taken from the Bible, referring to several different locations and generally translated as «hill of testimony.»^{[citation needed]}

In particular, Gilead is a patriarchal society, where only men have access to higher education^[3]. Women are not allowed to have titles or deeds to property in their name and cannot have a career unless said career is specifically assigned to them by the Gilead leadership. Men are also the only ones eligible to hold political office.

Women are regarded as second-class citizens as they must submit to the authority of men («Next male of kin»^[3]). Most female classes are forbidden to read or write^[4]. The only women who are still allowed to read and write are the Aunts ^[5], although Aunts are allowed to be literate, they are still inferior in rank to the Wives, who are considered the paramount rank a woman can hold in Gilead.

Some civil rights however are assumed or confirmed to be suspended for good, e.g. freedom of speech (which is considered heresy), freedom of the press^[6], freedom of religion ^[7] and freedom of assembly^[3]. The Eyes serve as Gilead’s political police force and sends spies to detect and punish infringements and political opponents^[7].

Society and Class System

Gilead doesn’t practice general equality before the law; while members of different classes can be sentenced variably for identical «crimes» (see Ofglen’s case), the individual legal position within one social class appears uniform.

Econopeople

As stated by June (in Baggage), this social ‘class’ (or group) contains all former male and married female U.S. citizens who «played their cards right» and aren’t explicitly reassigned into another class. Flashback scenes in Late suggest male Econopeople can keep some of their pre-Gileadean liberties, like holding down a (remunerated) job or owning property; unlike for females, there is no evidence in the story for the existence of male slave labor outside penal colonies.

Since young females in Gilead are expected to marry when reaching menarche^[8], the social class of «Econowives» (as mentioned in the novel) can be seen as a synonym to female econopeople as portrayed in the show. Single men of «low status» are «issued» women by chance^[9].

Children

Legal gender discrimination implies different rights to levels of education for boys and girls in Gilead. In particular, girls aren’t taught to read or write and they leave school when reaching menarche and marrying^[10]. Daughters of privileged families attend a Premarital Preparatory School at this point.

Female Classes

Women are believed to be the «lesser» sex, who should be subject to men. Women’s main purpose in this society is bearing and raising children, which is given particular emphasis due to the possible rampant infertility present in North America at the time. Women are not allowed to participate in the government, be educated, hold property or have a career^[3]. By law, only women can be considered infertile, not men, thus placing the blame for the fertility crisis solely on women. Because of these beliefs, men cannot «factually» be infertile, even if this is the case; to suggest otherwise is heresy^{[citation needed]}.

• Wives are the highest-ranking women. They can issue limited commands to Aunts^[4] and Guardians^[11]. Despite their ranking, the role and lifestyle of wives is more or less ornamental, with no real power other than their authority over household staff and the influence of their husbands. They wear tailored teal / blue / green dresses.
  • PC are previous Wives whose husbands have died. They wear black garments to signify mourning.
• Aunts are tasked with overseeing Handmaids, Daughters, and Unwomen. In this capacity they are allowed to read and write^[5], a ‘special dispensation’ not granted to wives. They can issue commands to Guardians, and are able to report ‘unseemly’ behavior within households, this includes reporting a Commander and his wife (for example, for not conducting a monthly ceremony). Aunts preside over general punishments in Gilead, such as executions and the Colonies. Though they may not live a life of leisure, Aunts arguably have more individual power than Wives and have greater mobility. Prior to Gilead, they were unmarried good women of faith who contributed to the rise of Gilead. They wear brown garments.
• Handmaids are women who are fertile who are deemed to be sinful in some way (June, for example, is a handmaid because she was found guilty of adultery). They wear red garments to symbolize fertility, and also because it makes them more conspicuous. A pregnant Handmaid has an elevated status.
• Marthas are servants, and are expected to live a life of quiet servitude. Prior to Gilead, they were unmarried women of good faith, deemed to be infertile. They wear grey garments, and must wear a veil.
• Daughters are the usually adopted/abducted female children that are raised by Commanders and their Wives. They attend school, but are not taught to read or write. They wear light pink garments.
• Econowives are wives to low-ranking men. They are married women of good faith. Like Wives, if an Econowife is fertile, she is allowed to raise her own children. If an Econowife is widowed, she becomes a Martha or Handmaid (if she is fertile). They wear grey garments.
• Jezebels are prostitutes who are unable to fit into society in some way.
• Unwomen are generally infertile women (though all single women can be demoted to Unwoman) deemed to be sinful like handmaids. They work as laborers in the Colonies, cleaning up toxic waste. Some in lucky numbers end up in the agricultural fields to produce food entirely self-sufficient. Most die of radiation poisoning. It is a fate some say is worse than death, but to others it is the reverse.

Male Classes

• Economan is the standard legal class for male adults, without documented discrimination on marital status.
• Commanders of the Faithful, or Commanders for short, are the apex of Gilead’s male hierarchy.
• Guardians of the Faith, or Guardians for short, are Gilead’s soldiers and uniformed police. Some of them serve as bodyguards and personal drivers to Commanders.
• Sons are the usually adopted/abducted male children that are raised by Commanders and their Wives. They attend school, and are likely expected to become Gilead’s future Commanders. They wear light blue garments.
• Eyes of God, or The Eyes for short, are Gilead’s secret police. Though sometimes seen as legally untouchable^[12], it is unclear if an affiliation defines a specific legal position.
• Angels and Professionals, as introduced in the novels, have not (yet) been mentioned in the continuity of the show.
• Male Unpeople, as documented in the novels, have not (yet) been mentioned in the continuity of the show.

Values and beliefs

The Gilead leadership consists of members of a religious group who believe that their strict interpretation of the Bible is the absolute truth and that in order for people to achieve salvation and live a pure, godly life, they must follow these guidelines. To do otherwise is seen as living in sin, and the guilty must either repent, or be put to death to prevent them from spreading their evil influence to others.

The government propagates a return to «traditional values»^{[citation needed]}, modesty and purity in all areas of life are greatly emphasized, particularly for women, who are believed to be more prone to weakness of character and sin^{[citation needed]}, and therefore to be blamed for falling birthrates at the time. Thus, women are supposed to be subject to their husbands and not allowed to participate in the government, be educated, hold property or have a career. Furthermore, only women can be considered infertile, not men; to suggest otherwise appears to be considered heresy.

Abortion and contraception are considered some of the greatest sins. Doctors who performed abortions before Gilead’s establishment are executed or deported to the Colonies. Fraternization between men and women of different classes is viewed as «fornication»^{[citation needed]} and is punishable by death for all involved^{[citation needed]}. Sex outside of marriage, dependent on the offender’s marital status, is a crime. If the offender is married and having sex with someone not their spouse, it is adultery. If the offender is unmarried and having sex, it is fornication^{[citation needed]}. Both are subject to severe punishments, including the possibility of death. Homosexuality, referred to as «Gender Treachery,» is considered a sin and a crime punishable by death.

Gilead’s leaders are largely using women and minority groups as scapegoats because they can be easily discriminated against. They are also engaged in mass deportation of Jews from America to Israel^[13], cramming them into cargo ships – though in practice, many transport ships simply cut corners by dumping their holds once they reach the open sea, leaving them to drown by the hundreds^[14]. In the novel, Gilead also discriminates against African-Americans, whom they refer to in their religious rhetoric as the «Children of Ham». In the Series, all infertile Jewish women are sent to the colonies while all Jewish men were executed and put on The Wall, and Jewish children were converted and presumably ended up with ‘fit’ parents^{[citation needed]}.

In a flashback scene in the last episode of season 3 showing June shortly after being detained while trying to leave Boston, she witnesses the rounding up of children with Down syndrome and those with disabilities into trucks, heavily implying they’re being lead to their deaths. It shows that Gilead also is intolerant of any child with disabilities, with Rose being one exception.

Whilst some of Gilead’s leaders and founders are implied to truly believe in the regime, it is hinted ^{[citation needed]} that many of them are hypocrites who use Gilead as a means to gain power for themselves. They do not care for its values and ideals at all, and regularly flout its rules whilst punishing others who do so (such as by visiting Jezebel’s for sex with the forced prostitutes there-usually a capital crime)^{[citation needed]}.

National Economy

Gilead is committed to a decarbonized economic model with a goal of significantly lowering and eventually eliminating emissions. Much of its economy is centered around slave labor—specifically its food sources (there is much mention of the «Agricultural Colonies» where prisoners are sent to do farm work). Foreign imports is limited to vehicle parts, certain consumer goods and a few covert military imports. Gilead exports food to most countries that are friendly and had been hostile to the United States due to the latter former Sanctions prior to the President’s Day Massacre.

It is implied as soon as Gilead rid itself of women’s rights, Gilead nationalized all remaining properties and bank accounts belonging to US citizens, US corporations and foreign nationals including major foreign corporations. The latter led to international sanctions due to no compensation and no ability to transfer money back to their own nations plus their own nationals being born on US soil. A few years later Japan and Republic of Gilead would resolve seizure of Japanese assets plus their properties and would see Japan lifting its sanctions on Gilead leading to Tourism to Gilead from Japan.

It has been mentioned several times that the Gilead economy is weak and suffering, not only due to a lack of international recognition but also due to the war. There is little information about how the war has progressed except that Chicago has been retaken, but it can be assumed that Gilead’s resources have run dry without access to California, the West & Gulf Coast as well as the absence of Texan oil, insinuated to be under the new authority of the Republic of Texas that is still fighting Gilead. Fred Waterford mentions how weak the country’s currency has become in Season 1, while certain items, such as oranges and coffee are not readily available.

Crime & Punishment

 See also: Laws in Gilead (Main article) The law is absolute in Gilead, as well as in the Colonies. Any rule-breaking or subversion committed either in Gilead or the Colonies must be reported and those who committed them are harshly punished. Criminals are often executed and their bodies displayed on the Wall as a severe warning; the Eyes also use excessive torture and other brutal interrogation tactics on their prisoners. Citing the state’s twisted interpretation of biblical verses, punishments often include amputation or mutilation.

Laws on religion

All citizens, including those sent to be worked to death in the Colonies, must follow only Gilead’s own official version of Christianity. No other religion or belief system is tolerated; as Gilead rose to power, those of other faiths and of other Christian denominations were forced to convert under threat of torture and execution. In an episode it is said that Jewish rabbis and Jews in general are sent to the colonies or killed except for fertile women^{[citation needed]}, while in the books it is stated that Jews in general were dumbed into the Atlantic via boats, originally set for Israel. A Jewish man was hanged on the Wall in an episode in Season 1^{[citation needed]}. In one episode where June & others enter a church, a sign remains in front, showing officially banned religions, including Judaism, Islam, Sikhism, Buddhism and more (including other Christian denominations).

In Season 2 Episode 4, June is taken to the Wall where Omar lays dead and hanging and labeled with the Islamic crescent, also demonstrating that large number of Muslims were/are persecuted by the regime.

It is stated throughout the series that many other Christian denominations are persecuted and not recognized by Gilead. An example of which is an empty house Serena Joy and Olivia Winslow walk through. When Serena asks about the previous owners, Olivia claims they were Baptists. In another instance, Moira states that Catholics were excellent at forging passports for American refugees, showing that Catholicism is not tolerated either.

Executions

Executions are referred to as «Salvagings» and are held in public. People are executed by hanging, with Handmaids being given the rope to hang the condemned together, thus sharing in the «responsibility» of punishing the wicked ^[15]. The Handmaids are also forced to stone people and beat people to death for various crimes including rape and endangerment of children^[9][16]. Isaac and Eden were executed for adultery by being drowned. Those that are spared execution can be sent to the toxic Colonies, where life is short and brutal. The Colonies are often polluted by rubbish and radioactive waste, and those sent there are tasked with cleaning up, eventually falling ill and dying slowly and painfully. Although the terrorist attack effectively decapitated most of the U.S. government and supervisory authorities, civil servants confirmed to the Boston Globe a capable government, in which the Sons of Jacob movement apparently succeeded to increase influence^[23], during a period of martial law in which the U.S. Constitution was suspended «to chase terrorists^[3]«.

The regime restricts internet access, June mentions that state-supported ‘decency codes’ censored online material^{[citation needed]}. Travel restrictions were imposed and borders were closed.^[24] A law forbidding women from owning property is declared and American women’s bank accounts were frozen; their wealth was transferred to the accounts of their husbands, fathers, or closest male relatives. Working women were dismissed from their jobs: A new paramilitary force named Guardians systematically cleared women out of all places of employment. Initially there were protest marches and demonstrations against these actions but they were met with violent assault by the emerging government’s paramilitary forces^[3].

Divorce and homosexuality were outlawed; existing divorce contracts and same-sex marriage licenses were retroactively nullified. As these policies take effect, people who run afoul of the new laws begin to flood American airports in an attempted mass exodus. A scene at Boston’s Logan Airport depicts a full-scale military occupation of the airport, with families being separated by immigration and ICE officials as crowds storm the airport in an effort to flee the country^[24]. Moira mentions to June that her fiancé, Odette, was rounded up in the “dyke purges,” ^{[citation needed]} suggesting that the rising Gileadean regime rounded up gay and lesbian people and killed them or sent them to the Colonies.

Some American government, civilian, and military officials survived the coup and fled to Canada, to the U.S.’ two outlying states of Alaska and Hawaii or elsewhere. A new capitol of the U.S. is declared in Anchorage^[25]

An official proclamation of the «Republic of Gilead» is implied but not shown: When June’s family tries to flee after women’s assets and finances were liquidated, they’re told that American passports are useless,^[26] insinuating that by that time, the new regime already started using own travel documents.

Media in Gilead

The media and the news are strictly state-run, heavily censored, and often include propaganda to promote the ideals and values of Gilead, whilst demonizing their enemies^{[citation needed]}. To discourage anyone except Males and Aunts from reading and writing, public writings or names of any kind, including shop signs, are removed. Information is instead relayed by signs with pictures or pictograms. Anything secular is banned outright and anybody regardless of class and rank found in possession of such items are punished severely, up to and including execution^{[citation needed]}.

Foreign Relations

The series leaves geopolitics in the background and the details of Gilead’s contact with the outside world are mostly a mystery.

However, Serena Waterford mentions that Gilead is currently under economic sanctions imposed by the U.N., presumably for human rights violations and the overthrow of the American government. Fred Waterford mentions that Gilead is not recognized as a ‘sovereign state’ by other countries. Scenes in the series depict sparsely-stocked shelves in grocery stores; oranges (presumably because Gilead has no control of Florida) and ‘real’ coffee are commodities. These austere conditions suggest that Gilead is suffering from a lack of trade as a result of global sanctions.

Much of Gilead’s relations with the outside world are depicted through the limited interactions between Canada and Gilead, the latter’s immediate neighbor to the north.

Canada does not have official relations with Gilead and its government maintains a close alliance with what is left of the United States, if the presence of a U.S. consulate in Toronto is any indication. Canada accepts refugees fleeing from Gilead, although many are relocated to other countries; the United Kingdom is mentioned as being one such country and there is a mention of several British «Save the Women Societies» working on behalf of female refugees from Gilead.

Newscasts mention that Canada is still recovering from a loss of trade with the fallen United States, and consequently it would appear that certain elements within Canada had sought the possibility of some trade with Gilead or an easing of sanctions but these efforts failed. Canadians find themselves in a difficult diplomatic situation. They are home to a large number of American refugees to U.S. military personnel and are well-aware of Gilead’s human rights abuses, but they are also trying to avoid open conflict with their southern neighbor.

Mexican diplomats have visited Gilead although the success (or lack thereof) of that meeting is never explicated, though it is insinuated that previous diplomatic missions were a success through the mentioned importation of chocolate by Eden. A Swiss diplomat acting as an neutral intermediary between the governments of Canada and Gilead describes the latter as a ‘black box,’ which is ‘extremely powerful, militarily,’ suggesting that the outside world has little knowledge of the Gilead’s inner workings.

It is also stated during a news broadcast on Radio Free America that China and India are financially aiding the U.S. Government-in-exile (based in Anchorage, Alaska) and Luke Bankole reads that British and Canadian military forces are conducting exercises near the Canada-Gilead border, indicating that the outside world regards Gilead as a rogue state.

By Season 4. Gilead does maintain a Representative office in Canada and maintain trade ties mainly to consumer and products of Food and Fuel. Automotive parts are also imported into Gilead to keep vehicles maintained. Gilead maintains some similar ties with much of the world at a level that Visas to Gilead are only for Business people and their families and are escorted by minders employed by the Eyes It also allows foreign diplomats to visit and probably receives military weapons from other countries on a limited basis. Since Gilead was also illegally formed, all imports are usually paid for by cash by a unknown currency possibly a successor to the US dollar after the US Dollar and foreign currency reserves were spent.

Within Season 5, Serena Waterford revealed that recognition efforts of Gilead in South America are stalled, while Venezuela has expressed interest in the Handmaid system alongside Mexico in Season 1. Serena in Episode Four attempted to reach out to various nations, including Venezuela and Germany before being shut down. In the aftermath of the botched air raid on Hannah’s Wife School, Russian, North Korean & Chinese diplomats congratulated Gilead on their victory.

Other Facts

Gilead’s names for shops, streets and certain concepts or practices are often derived from scripture. The name Gilead itself is taken from the Bible, referring to several different locations and individuals and generally translated as «hill of testimony.»

Inspiration

As Margaret Atwood has explained in various interviews, the «Sons of Jacob» and the «Republic of Gilead» they created, cynically don’t actually believe in their own religious propaganda – almost every member of Gilead in a position of power, such as the Commanders, is at various points breaking their own rules, or expressing that they are simply using this as rhetoric. Atwood didn’t conceive of Gilead as a Christian totalitarian regime, but a totalitarian fascist regime rising in the United States which happens to use some empty vestiges of Christianity to justify itself^{[citation needed]}.

Atwood looked at the rise of various totalitarian fascist regimes throughout history and concluded that it always rises around some central trappings of national identity, and that in her estimation, the national character of the United States has always been shaped by religious movements. Similarly, Nazi Germany used trappings of past rhetoric about prior Germanic empires such as Charlemagne’s Carolingian Empire and the pre-World War I German Empire or latched onto pre-existing European discrimination policies against disempowered groups (Jews, Roma, homosexuals, left-wing/far-left Social Democrats and Communists, anti-Nazi Germans etc.) – but fundamentally, this was just a convenient scapegoat for what was at heart a hyper-nationalist junta that wanted to seize power for itself. Atwood tried to imagine what a totalitarian regime would look like if it took over the United States, and as the saying goes, «When fascism comes to America, it will come carrying a cross and draped in the Stars and Stripes.»^{[citation needed]}

Atwood also said that Gilead was partially inspired by the Religious Right’s reaction in the 1980s to the Women’s Rights movements of the 1970s, during the Reagan years. In particular, Atwood was reacting to large-scale but baseless propaganda being circulated by hard right-wing religious groups that abortion and contraception access was leading to a «white genocide,» and that the birthrate among White Americans was sharply declining — despite the fact that there was no evidence to support this, and that census data proved it to be blatantly incorrect.^{[citation needed]}

Atwood’s vision of Gilead also draws inspiration from the «utopian idealism» present from 20th-century communist regimes such as Pol Pot’s Kampuchea (aka Cambodia) and Nicolae Ceausescu’s Romania as well as earlier New England Puritanism, which held a new, «pure» society could be created in a short time (often leading to massive losses in life).^{[citation needed]}

    Cудя по моей френд-ленте, присуждение Нобелевской премии по литературе Кадзуо Исигуро оставило всех равнодушными. О Светлане Алексиевич в позапрошлом году писали многие, о Бобе Дилане в прошлом — тоже, но награждение Исигуро комментаторы в большинстве своём предпочли проигнорировать. Последнее неудивительно. Этого британца японского происхождения мало кто читал, а широкой общественности он известен лишь по одному, написанному в 1989 году, роману «Остатoк дня», точнее — по его его экранизации с Энтони Хопкинсом (в русском прокате этот фильм назывался «На исходе дня»).

   О прочих его произведениях даже профессиональные критики говорят в основном общими фразами. Мне где-то попалась формулировка «он сбрасывает британцев с пьедестала колониализма», но расшифровать её я не в состоянии. Столь же туманно и обоснование награды, сделанное Шведской Академией: «в романах великой эмоциональной силы открыл пропасть под нашим иллюзорным чувством связи с миром».  Для меня Исигуро тоже автор одной книги, к тому же показавшейся мне скорее затянутой, нежели обладающей великой эмоциональной силой. Как и многие другие, я рассчитывал на победу совсем иного кандидата из числа подданных Её Величества.

  Фаворитом до последнего момента считалась Маргарет Этвуд из Канады. Hамереваясь написать пост о победе Этвуд, я начал читать её роман 1986 года «Рассказ служанки» и успел дойти до середины, когда пришло сообщение, что выиграл Исигуро. Mне было в общих чертах известно, что произойдёт с героями дальше — я видел экранизацию 1989 года с Наташей Ричaрдсон, Фэй Дануэй, Элизабет Макговерн и Робертом Дювалем (в русском прокате этот фильм получил название «История служанки»; любопытная деталь: драматург и сценарист Гарольд Пинтер, адаптировавший роман Этвуд для экрана, в 2005 году тоже стал Нобелевским лауреатом). Тем не менее, я дочитал книгу до концa.

  Разумеется, творчество Маргарет Этвуд не исчерпывается «Рассказом служанки», её давно признали классиком канадской литературы, а председателем Международного ПЕН-клуба избрали ещё до публикации этой вещи, но наибольшую славу ей принесла именно сия антиутопия, ставшая одной из библий феминистского движения. Так что если бы Этвуд получила Нобелевку, она получила бы её за «Рассказ служанки». Литературные достоинства награждaемых этой премиeй произведений имели значение разве что в первой половине ХХ века, a сегодня награда служит для обозначения определённыx социокультурныx и даже социополитическиx феноменoв. Подробнее я писал об этом в посте Нобель и бурлаки по поводу Алексиевич, и награждение Дилана вполне вписалось в тенденцию.

    Вполне возможно, Маргарет Этвуд ещё получит своего Нобеля. Сейчас ей семьдесят семь, так что ещё лет десять или пятнадцать у Шведской Академии есть. Нобелевский комитет действует медленно. Despacito, как сказали бы испанцы. В принципе, и Боба Дилана следовало бы наградить лет на пятьдесят или хотя бы на тридцать раньше. В ту пору слава его была такова, что даже самые ярые поклонники БГ признавали: oн явно подражает Дилану. А сегодня уже приходится напоминать, кто такой Боб Дилан, и скоро, по-видимому, придётся напоминать, кто такой БГ. Тем не менее, определённая логика в хронологии награждений всё же есть.

  Дилан получил премию именно в 2016 году, когда хитом стала песня «Lost on you» в исполнении LP — женщины, как две капли воды похожей на него самого сорока- или пятидесятилетней давности (правда, я не уверен, что на груди у Боба Дилана есть наколка в виде корабля с развёрнутыми парусами). По меньшей мере визуальный образ Дилана оказался достаточно мощным, чтобы зажить самостоятельной жизнью. Возможно, он переживёт своего создателя и будет передаваться от одного музыканта к другому ещё лет сто или двести. Это куда более внятное достижение, нежели «создание новых поэтических выражений в великой американской песенной традиции«, которым обосновала своё решение Шведская Академия.

     Кстати, мне пришлось воспользоваться поисковиком, чтобы вспомнить, что аббревиатура LP означает Лаура Перголицци. У меня в памяти хранится только одно женское итальянское имя, начинающееся на эти буквы — Лоренца Пелегрини. Лаура Перголицци — ярчайшая живая женщина, а Лоренца Пелегрини — всего лишь второстепенная героиня из «Маятника Фуко» Умберто Эко, но мне проще запомнить имя второй из них. Тут поневоле вспомнишь милейшую everlasting_cat, однажды задавшую сакраментальный вопрос: «А что-нибудь, кроме литературы, в этой стране существует?» Конечно существует, Кэт. Но оно должно быть описано в литературе. Eсли вы хотите, чтобы в России что-нибудь было в реале, сначала опишите это в романе.

     Однако американская (а в наше время это значит и мировая) культура столь же синемaцентpична, сколь литератуpoцентрична культура русская. Это придаёт современности странный привкус. Ув. philtrius однажды заметил: «

Hѣтъ болѣе лживаго искусства, чѣмъ кино, и болѣе правдиваго, чѣмъ архитектура.»  Это было сказано ещё до появления «Доктора Хауса», «Карточного домика» и «Игры престолов». Синемацентричность мировой культуры с тех пор никуда не делась, но сегодня внимание публики сфокусированo не столько на кинофильмах, сколько на телесериалах. Кино всех только разочaровывает — и «Чужой» уже не тот, и «Оно» не такое, каким должно быть; я слышал, хотят перезапустить «Матрицу», но уверен, что и она  всем покажется какой-то неправильной. А сериалы люди смотрят и нахваливают.

      Знаете, почему я поверил экспертам, утверждавшим, что Нобель-2017 достанется Маргарет Этвуд? Потому что в 2017 году на телеэкраны вышел сериал «Рассказ служанки» (я не учёл, что в 2018 ожидается его второй сезон). Новой экранизации я не видел (я за редчайшими исключениями не смотрю сериалы) и не могу сказать о ней ничего определённого, за исключением одного — в проекте участвуют чёрные актёры, а это очень серьёзное отклонение от литературной основы. Фильм 1989 года, напротив, был максимально близок к роману. Любопытно, что задним числом он кажется ретрофутуристическим — действие происходит в близком будущем, в котором у всех костюмы и причёски 80-х годов минувшего столетия.

    Сюжет «Рассказа служанки» разворачивается в республике Галаад, созданной на месте бывших Соединённых Штатов Америки (точнее, на месте некоторой их части — определить границы Галаада довольно трудно). Это тоталитарно-теократическая диктатура, что-то среднее между Северной Кореей и ИГИЛ. Одни детали жизни Галлада взяты прямо из реалий социалистического блока ХХ века, другие — из самых мрачных фантазий о средневековье. Карточная система, дефицит, очереди, промывание мозгов, увозящие граждан чёрные воронки, лагеря, кастовая система с цветовой дифференциацией предписанной одежды, воинствующий обскурантизм, гендерное рабство и публичные казни за всё подряд от адюльтера до ереси.

   Власть захвачена христианскими фундаменталистами неопределённой направленности. Католики поставлены вне закона, баптисты ушли в партизаны, квакеры в подполье, евреям как сынам Иакова приказано конвертировать или эмигрировать (а на криптоиудеев идёт охота в духе инквизиции),  чёрные провозглашены сынами Хама и выселены на историческую родину (которая обнаружилась в Северной Дакоте), гомосексуалистов вешают, женщины лишены имущественных и гражданских прав и разделены на несколько категорий, одним из которых запрещено работать, другим — читать и писать, а третьим — даже пользоваться своими именами. По телевидению — только военная пропаганда и молитвы, прессы не существует, глянцевые журналы и художественные книги сожжены, университеты закрыты и превращены в тюрьмы.

   Мир Галаада производит впечатление страшной сказки, созданной воображением ребёнка. О захвате власти фундаменталистами сообщается следующее: они убили президента и расстреляли Конгресс из автоматов, свалили произошедшее на исламских террористов, приостановили действие конституции и передали власть военным, а потом вдруг оказалось, что это не совсем те военные — у них немного другие формы. Куда делись настоящие военные, в правильных формах (а также полиция, спецслужбы, национальная гвардия, вице-президент, губернаторы штатов, банковские группы, уличные банды, этнические мафии и т.д.и т.п.) не объясняется. Примерно так же обстоят дела с экономикой, демографией и всем остальным. Кажется, сочиняя Галаад, Маргарет Этвуд обо всём этом просто не подумала.

      ИГИЛ возник в Ираке и Сирии, входящих в первую десятку стран с самой высокой рождаемостью на свете, и действует, опираясь на этноконфессиональное большинство региона — арабских суннитов. Галаад стал ответом на катастрофическое падение рождаемости у американских европеоидов. Кстати, причины последнего объясняются так же туманно, как и всё остальное — то ли химическая промышленность всё отравила, то ли какая-то разработка военных лабораторий вышла из-под контроля, но у белых началась эпидемия бесплодия, поэтому-то они и превратили фертильных женщин из народа в лишённых прав и имён Cлужанок, обязанных рожать детей для неспособной размножаться элиты. Во время ежемесячной Церемонии секса Командоров со Служанками Жёны держат Служанок за руки, а лица у всех целомудренно скрыты вуалями.

   Правда, непонятно, где вымирающие белые фундаменталисты взяли столько бойцов, всех этих Хранителей и Ангелов Апокалипсиса, чтобы поставить на колени всю Америку и одновременно вести войны с внешними противниками, но разве эта деталь может остановить феминиcтку, описывающую ужасы, творимые консервативными мужчинами? Мир Галаада неладно скроен и некрепко сшит, он построен по законам идеологии, а не логики, и книгу спасает лишь профессионализм, проявленный автором при создании психологических портретов героев и при описании бытовых деталей (в отличие от основной сюжетной линии, они вполне реалистичны). А экранизацию 1989 года вытягивает игра актёров, в первую очередь — Роберта Дюваля, способного вытянуть что угодно.

  Говорят, за свою более чем полувековую карьеру в кино Дюваль не получил ни одного негативного отзыва. Он был хорош всегда — и в 1979, когда в «Апокалипсисе» под музыку Вагнера наносил по вьетконговцам удар с воздуха, а потом говорил: «Я люблю запах напалма по утрам, это запах победы», и в 1993 в «С меня хватит», когда в свой последний предпенсионный день в полиции, уже сдав табельное оружие, ещё раз возвращался на улицу, чтобы голыми руками остановить слетевшего с катушек разгневанного белого мужчину, и в 2014 в «Судье», когда после десятилетий безупречный службы правосудию сам превращался в разгневанного белого, ибо на этот раз достали и его. Разумеется, он был хорош и в 1989 в роли Командора в «Истории служанки».

      В романе Командор — один из создателей и идеологов режима Галаада, в фильме он возглавляет службу безопасности штата. Этвуд сделала его образ несколько карикатурным, на грани пародии. Например, она обрядила его в чёрный мундир и — как же иначе — в высокие чёрные сапоги. Видимо, для неё это важная деталь. В романе есть сцена, в которой Служанка прячется на полу машины у ног Командора и отмечает: «Моё лицо впервые так близко к его сапогам». Это прямая отсылка к Оруэллу с его «Образ будущего — это сапог, наступающий на лицо человека». Но Дювалю не нужны сапоги, чтобы перевоплотиться. Он сыграл Командора в таком же неброском костюме, в каком играл Тома Хагэна в «Крёстном отце» или детектива Прендергаста в «С меня хватит». Он смог бы сыграть в этом же костюме кого угодно. Но мне кажется, что роль Командора стоит в его творчестве особняком.

     Дюваль входит в число немногих голливудских звёзд правых взглядов. Отец его был американским генералом с французскими корнями, потомком гугенотов и прихожанином методистской церкви, а по матери род Дюваля восходит прямо к легендарному полководцу конфедератов Роберту Ли, памятники которому сегодня валят демократы по всей Америке. Сам Дюваль придерживается Христианской науки, поддерживает республиканцев и с презрением отзывается о левацких выходках коллег. Он и есть один из тех консервативных белых мужчин, ненависть к которым излила Маргарет Этвуд в «Рассказе служанки». Приняв роль в этом феминистском проекте, Дюваль по сути согласился прийти на территорию противника и сыграть по его правилам. Для этого нужно немалое мужество.

   И я не завидую Джозефу Файнсу, которому досталась роль Командора в сериале 2017 года. Играть что-то после Дюваля — это очень, очень неблагодарное дело. Создатели фильма 1989 года незаметно исправили целый ряд слишком явных ляпов Этвуд. Например, у неё символом гоcбезопасности Галаада служит какой-то странный глаз с крыльями (хорошо, что не свастика с ушами), а у них — вполне традиционная и заимствованная с долларовой банкноты пирамида с глазом. Но больше всех сделал Дюваль, вдохнувший в картонного Командора жизнь. В романе Служанка спрашивает, почему он принял участие в перевороте, и он отвечает что-то невнятное. В экранизации звучит совсем другой ответ, куда более жёсткий и предметный (вы можете услышать его на 72-й минуте фильмa):

    «В стране был бардак. Полный бардак. Всякая шваль диктовала нам, как жить, пыталась устроить всё по-своему — чёрные, гомики,  все прочие… живущие на пособия… и эти… женщины. Поэтому пришлось заниматься уборкой. Мы смыли всё к чёртовой матери.»

  Ознакомившись с заявленным списком противников разгневанных белых мужчин, я задумался, что он мне напоминает. Cам по себе перечень вполне ожидаемый, но где я встречался с ним совсем недавно? И вспомнил: у Константина Крылова, в статье «Последний бой мёртвых белых мужчин» (http://www.apn.ru/index.php?newsid=36611). Tекст Константина Анатольевича посвящён другому, куда более популярному телесериалу, который, впрочем, я тоже не смотрел — «Игре престолов». Помимо прочего, в нём говорится:

   «Это словосочетание (Dead White Men или Dead White Males — DWM) читатель, вероятно, уже встречал – особенно среди писаний феминисток и защитников прав меньшинств. «Мёртвые белые мужчины» — это крайне популярный среди феминисток, чернокожих активисток, гей-транс-гендеров и прочих современных лидеров мнений термин. Обозначает он, попросту, людей, много сделавших для человечества – от Гомера и Шекспира до Рузвельта и Черчилля. Ну то есть «классиков», «великих», «выдающихся». По мнению современных хозяев дискурса, все эти люди не заслуживают ни малейшего уважения, и даже наоборот – потому что были белыми мужчинами и мешали женщинам, чёрным и педерастам художничать как им хочется.»

    В этом году вышел седьмой сезон «Игры престолов», в следующем должен выйти восьмой, завершающий. Помнится, когда появилась первая серия первого сезона, я честно попытался её посмотреть, но заскучал минут через 15-20. Меня не очень интересует даже средневековье как таковое, а уж тем более — навеянное им  фэнтези. В последующие годы я видел ещё какие-то фрагменты этого произведения, в общей сложности часа на три или четыре, так что у меня есть некоторое представление о его стилистике и даже о некоторых героях (например, я знаю, как выглядят Дейнерис Таpгариен, Арья Старк или Джон Сноу), но об их судьбах и отношениях я не знаю ровным счётом ничего. Кажется, они живут на континенте, который носит название Вестерос. С моей стороны было бы слишком самонадеянно оценивать верность или неверность мнения Крылова о мире Вестероса. Поэтому я просто приведу ещё несколько цитат из его статьи:

  «С первых шагов по объединению Европы – а также и Запада в целом, который всё больше отрывается от остального мира, оставляя его далеко за спиной – появилась и потребность в эпосе ОБЩЕЗАПАДНОМ. Попыток создания такового было много. До недавнего времени самой удачной был толкиеновский «Властелин Колец», который стал самым «молодым» и самым важным эпосом Белого Мира.

   Ну так вот. Я полагаю, что Сериал «Игра Престолов» имеет сравнимое с Толкиеном значение. Это новый эпос Запада, новая Песнь Запада. Новейшее и лучшее повествование о Западе как о едином целом, о Сердце Мира.

   Маленькое замечание. Значение имеет только Сериал. Я сам люблю книги больше фильмов. Но надо понимать, что в данном случае книги Мартина — руда, шихта, а попросту говоря, навоз, на котором выросла волшебная роза Сериала. Сериал же –  невероятный, немыслимый доселе прорыв в киноискусстве, абсолютное чудо. И  изучать надо ТОЛЬКО его, забыв про навоз, на котором он вырос – то есть про мартиновский книжный цикл.»

   «Судя по сериалу (и не только), кастрация – это лучший способ угодить женщинам. Например, Теон Грейджой, лишившись члена, стал хорошим слугой для своей сестры-лесбиянки Яры, которая становится главной железнорождённых. Он даже дерётся за неё с превосходящим противником (и выигрывает именно из-за отсутствия яиц). Кастрат Варис оказывается неизменно полезен Дейнерис Таргариен. Оскоплённые Безупречные являются основой силы Дейнерис, особенно верный Серый Червь.

    Зритель в какой-то момент понимает, что следовало бы оскопить всех мужчин в сериале, чтобы они хорошенько служили сражающимся бабам-сукам, служили бы рабски, ничего от них не требуя. Впрочем, некоторые достигают такого самоотречения и без кастрации – например, сэр Джорах Мормонт, живущий во имя Дейнерис, с которым она обращается как с псом.»

     Русский философ обнаружил в сверхпопулярном телесериале феминистское криптопослание о борьбе с белыми мужчинами в то самое время, когда на экраны вышел другой сериал, наглядно показывающий творимые означенными белыми мужчинами ужасы, а Шведская Академия остановилась в полушаге от того, чтобы присудить литературной основе этого сериала Нобелевскую премию. В одном случае стержнем сюжета стали кастрация и средневековые интриги, в другом — бесплодие и средневековoе мракобесие. Потомкам, которые станут изучать культурную жизнь 2017 года, будет о чём подумать.

  Кстати, у романа Этвуд есть своего рода довесок, не вошедший в экранизацию 1989 года. Изобразив правый мужской консервативный ад, она показала и наступивший за ним левый феминистский прогрессивный рай. На последних страницах «Рассказа служанки» действие переносится почти на двести лет вперёд, в 2197 год, когда Галаад вoспринимается уже как далёкое тёмное прошлое вроде средневековья. Подробностей рассказывать не буду, скажу лишь, что у профессоров, собравшихся в 2197 году на конгресс по антропологии европеоидов, восхитительные имена.

  Если ограничить своё внимание означенными произведениями, можно прийти к выводу, что дело белых мужчин окончательно проиграно. Но ведь мы помним и сентенцию Фильтриуса о кино, как о самом лживом из искусств. Что будет, если мы выйдем из круга телесериалов и оглянемся вокруг? 13 января 2017 года пуэрториканский музыкант Луис Фонси (наст. имя Луис Альфонсо Родригес Лопес-Сеперо) при участии Дэдди Янки (Рамон Луис Айяла Родригес) записал песню «Despacito».  И тут же стал популярнее Энрике Иглeсиаса, Тейлор Свифт, Эда Ширана и Виза Халифы.

   Клип на песню «Despacito» первым в истории ютуба собрал три… три с половиной… четыре миллиарда просмотров. Не удивлюсь если он соберёт и все пять миллиардов (миллионов восемьдесят там прибавилось, пока я готовил этот текст). Люди поставили «Despacito» 22 миллиона лайков и написали полтора миллиона комментариев (это тоже рекорды). Даже каверы этой песни собирают десятки миллионов просмотров (версия канадца Джастина Бибера — 170 миллионов, версия южнокорейской певицы Джей — 60 миллионов и т.д.). О чём поётся в этой вещице? О манускриптах, что не может не радовать. Буквально:

  То есть что-то вроде «Медленно, я раздену тебя медленно, я подпишусь на стенах твоего лабиринта и сделаю всё твоё тело манускриптом». Эта та часть, которую я рискую привести. В «Despacito» есть и пассажи, из-за которых эту песенку о манускриптах запретили в некоторых мусульманских странах. Смерть белых мужчин? Царство кастратов? Воистину кино — самое лживое из искусств. В реале два мачо побили все рекорды популярности, записав песню, целиком посвящённую сексу на пуэрториканских пляжах и рассказывающую о нём весьма подробно.

  Если же у вас вызывает сомнение принадлежность этих парней к белым мужчинам, то я напомню, что согласно данным генетиков , по мужским Y-хромосомам европейское происхождение имеет 70 % пуэрториканской популяции (ещё 20% — негритянское, а 10 — индейское). Хотя лучше верить своим глазам. О Дэдди Янки ничего не скажу, там всё непросто, но Луис Фонси, судя по всему — чистокровный креол, потомок конкистадоров. Белые мужчины, которые совершили Великие географические открытия и завоевали целые континенты, выглядели именно так.

  И если есть на Земле хоть капля справедливости, то Шведская Академия рано или поздно должна присудить Луису Фонси и Дэдди Янки Нобелевскую премию. Если не по литературе, то по экономике. Я не проверял пуэрториканскую экономическую статистику, но пресса пишет, что благодаря «Despacito» туристический поток в Пуэрто-Рико вырос на 45% и принёс этой стране что-то порядка 70 миллиардов долларов. Почему-то мне хочется верить, что это правда. В любом случае, одно можно сказать совершенно определённо: Галаад и Вестерос с их кастрированными и мёртвыми белыми мужчинами придуманы от начала до конца, а Пуэрто-Рико с его живыми потомками конкистадоров существует на самом деле.
