«Летняя сказка» – образцовая документалка о рождении современной бундестим.
Документальный фильм о сборной Германии на домашнем чемпионате мира вышел в прокат в октябре 2006 года. За три недели на него сходили 4 млн человек – космическая посещаемость для Германии, где главный киножанр – голливудская комедия. Чуть позже фильм показали по общедоступному ТВ и его посмотрели 11 млн немцев.
«Летняя сказка» – по-прежнему самый кассовый документальный немецкий фильм в 21 веке, при этом в России о нем мало кто знает. Если вы его пропустили, посмотреть точно стоит: в футболе не принято так близко подпускать камеры. Мы собрали главные истории из этой (и о этой) картины.
Как это снималось?
Начиная с подготовки к Кубку конфедераций-2005 и заканчивая матчем за третье место на ЧМ-2006, национальную команду во всех поездках сопровождал Зенке Вортманн. Бывший профессиональный футболист Вортманн после трех неудачных сезонов в региональной лиге разочаровался в себе и в 21 год поступил в мюнхенский университет кино и телевидения.
В 1994 году в прокат вышла комедия «Самый желанный мужчина» с Тилем Швайгером в главной роли – первый всенемецкий успех Вортманна-режиссера (по сборам в Германии на тот момент его фильм уступил только двум мировым шедеврам – «Королю-льву» и «Форресту Гампу»).
Если вы помните «Достучаться до небес» наизусть, то Вортманн – это тот патлатый парень, с которым главные герои пересекались в баре «Настоящая любовь» ближе к развязке.
В 2003-м Вортманн выпустил игровой фильм о сакральной для всей Германии победе на ЧМ-1954 («Чудо в Берне»), положительно встреченный критиками. Спустя пару лет Немецкий футбольный союз предложил ему войти в штаб бундестим.
Вортманн со своей камерой получил полный доступ: он ездил на матчи, жил вместе с командой в отеле, нарушал личное пространство звезд, врываясь к ним в номера, посещал тактические занятия, командные собрания, на которых обсуждались совсем личные моменты, и снимал все подряд (в итоге набралось более 100 часов видеоматериала). К каждому важному матчу Вортманн монтировал короткий ролик о внутренней жизни команды, после чего показывал клип игрокам для поднятия духа.
Название картины – парафраз поэмы Генриха Гейне «Германия: Зимняя сказка», в которой писатель собрал отрицательные черты немецкого быта во время путешествия из Парижа в Гамбург. Вортманн же показал максимально открытую сборную, которая заряжается эмоциями целой нации и взамен дарит ей праздник.
Сборы на Сардинии: меньше футбола, больше развлечений
Так как позади был тяжелый сезон, подготовку к чемпионату мира немцы начали с недельного отпуска на юге Сардинии в отеле Forte Village. Они играли в волейбол, боулинг и теннис, катались на картах и загорали – футбол отошел на второй план. «В середине мая погода в Германии переменчивая, поэтому мы отправились туда, где можно комфортно тренироваться и здорово проводить время», – объяснял менеджер сборной Оливер Бирхофф.
Для того, чтобы происходящее еще меньше напоминало тренировочный сбор, футболистам разрешили приехать в Италию с семьями.
Юрген Клинсманн проводил первый большой турнир как главный тренер. После провала команды Феллера на Евро-2004 (третье место в группе) никто не был уверен, что сборная достойно представит страну на домашнем турнире. «Германия многое поставила на карту, чтобы добиться успеха этим летом, – заявил уполномоченный федерального правительства по туризму Эрнст Хинскен. – А Клинсманну, который живет в Калифорнии, следовало бы больше времени проводить в Германии и посещать мероприятия, которые устраивает ФИФА, вместо того чтобы отправлять на них своих помощников».
«Все, что в ближайшие несколько недель будет написано в прессе про вашу игру или про вас лично – абсолютно не важно, – сказал Юрген на первом командном собрании. – Вы знаете, на что способны и в какой футбол хотите играть. Все ваши будущие страдания на тренировках оправданы тем, что вам выпал уникальный шанс сыграть за сборную на домашнем чемпионате мира. Ни у кого из вас – и у нас, тренеров, тоже – больше не будет такой возможности».
За физподготовку отвечал Марк Ферстеген. До этого он тренировал морских пехотинцев ВМС США
Клинсманн много раз повторял, что устоять против топовых сборных получится в том случае, если немецкая команда физически превзойдет соперника. Для этого он нанял одного из лучших фитнес-тренеров Америки.
Ферстеген сравнивал свою работу с работой механика в автоспорте. «Мы оцениваем эффективность каждого игрока: сколько оборотов набирает мотор, как быстро изнашиваются шины, есть ли вероятность, что машина просто встанет посреди гонки. Затем мы смотрим, какие конкретно детали нужно поменять, чтобы не было внезапных остановок. Мы не строим новый болид с нуля, мы выжимаем максимум из того, что у нас есть». При Ферстегене появились новые упражнения на мышечную растяжку (для профилактики травм), о которых немецкие футболисты раньше даже не слышали. Также Марк улучшил технику спринта нападающим. При этом он никогда не перегружал футболистов.
В Германии прохладно отнеслись к зарубежным специалистам. Журналисты из Frankfurter Rundschau смеялись над щадящими нагрузками («Это точно сработает? Выглядит как реабилитация для пенсионеров, переживших инфаркт»), а менеджер «Герты» Дитер Хенесс патриотично отстаивал старые методики («Я против американизации немецкого футбола»). В итоге основы подготовки, заложенные Ферстегеном, привели немцев к победе на ЧМ-2014.
Лам мог пропустить матч открытия. А Одонкора взяли в последний момент
Лам получил травму (частичный разрыв трицепса) в контрольном матче за три недели до старта турнира. Игроку сделали операцию, после чего он вернулся на Сардинию. Вортманн в тот же день зашел его проведать и узнать, как все произошло. «Шла середина второго тайма, – улыбался Лам и показывал режиссеру загипсованный руку. – Я побежал в атаку, на мне сфолили и я всем телом упал на локоть. Уходя с поля, я боялся посмотреть вниз, думал, что у меня перелом».
Лам вышел на матч с Коста-Рикой и забил, пожалуй, самый красивый гол чемпионата, хотя еще за час до игры было неясно, разрешат ли ему играть с лангеткой. Арбитр Орасио Элисондо вызвал Филиппа в судейскую, осмотрел руку, попросил надеть форму с длинным рукавом и только тогда дал добро.
Ни по каким разумным причинам 22-летний Давид Одонкор не должен был попасть в заявку на ЧМ-2006. Атакующий игрок, ни разу не забивавший за сезон больше двух мячей, в 2004-м порвал кресты и перенес две сложнейших операции. Казалось, карьера Давида прижалась к обочине, но Клинсманну нравилась его скорость.
«Я готовился вместе с немецкой молодежкой к чемпионату Европы в Португалии, – рассказывал Одонкор. – И тут в 8 утра мне звонит наш тренер Дитер Айльтс и говорит, что я больше не в сборной». Я оцепенел от ужаса, а он спокойно продолжил: «Сейчас тебе позвонит Юрген Клинсманн. Собирайся, тебя вызвали в первую команду».
Давид вышел на замену в тяжелейшем матче против Польши во втором туре (игра проходила на его родном «Вестфаленштадионе») и на 91-й минуте отдал голевой пас на Нойвилля. Германия выиграла – 1:0. Это было первое и последнее полезное действие Одонкора на турнире.
В дальнейшем он пережил еще 5 операций на больном колене, после чего его лечащий врач сказал: «Продолжишь играть – ногу придется ампутировать». Одонкор завершил карьеру в 29. Последним клубом немца стала «Говерла» из Ужгорода.
Штаб-квартиру сборной сделали максимально уютной. Игроки в ней жили большой семьей
Во время ЧМ сборная поселилась в люксовом отеле в парковой зоне Берлина (Грюневальд). Чтобы футболисты круглые сутки не утопали в своих роскошных апартаментах (интерьером отеля занимался легендарный немецкий модельер Карл Лагерфельд), а собирались в одном месте, Бирхофф и Клинсманн распорядились оборудовать на первом этаже лаунж-зону, куда игроки приходили смотреть телевизор, играть в Playstation, настольный футбол или покер.
В саду растянули три огромных тента, где сборники спасались от жары, проводя время на свежем воздухе. Иногда к ним приходили гости – например, Михаэль Шумахер.
Клозе и парикмахер: чудесный диалог накануне первого матча в Мюнхене
Футболисты по-разному настраивались на игру с Коста-Рикой. Кто-то уединился в номере, чтобы не показывать волнение, а кто-то захотел выглядеть стильно и свежо перед полуторамиллиардной аудиторией и позвал парикмахера. Вортманн с камерой заглянул в комнату, где стригли Миро, и подслушал разговор.
– Честно говоря, твоя прическа выглядит так себе. Но не переживай, я сделаю из тебя красавчика.
– Хорошо.
– Ты ведь не из «Баварии», верно? Я знаю всех игроков «Баварии».
– Нет, я играю за «Вердер».
– Извини, я вообще не разбираюсь в футболе. У тебя есть личный стилист или парикмахер?
– Нет.
– О, поверь, тебе стоит завести.
– Не слишком коротко? Если я завтра не забью головой…
– …да-да, согласна, это будет моя вина.
Клозе забил Коста-Рике дважды и во втором голе немного помог себе головой.
Клинсманн был ментальным коучем. Тактикой и анализом соперников занимался Лев
О том, что Клинси – отличный мотиватор, но не тренер, вся Германия узнала в 2008-м, когда Юрген принял «Баварию». Лам писал в автобиографии: «В «Баварии» мы вообще не разбирали игры и понятия не имели, чем силен наш будущий противник. Мы выполняли какие-то физические упражнения, после чего он говорил, что мы готовы к игре. После шести недель совместной работы я понял, что с Клинсманном у нас ничего не выйдет».
Йоги Лев рисовал схемы и придумывал сочетания. В фильме это разделение ролей здорово показано, когда на предматчевом собрании сначала выступает Клинсманн с 10-минутной духоподъемной речью («Если вы пропустили, ничего страшного – грудь вперед»), затем вступает Йоги и переходит к детальному разбору: рисует стрелочки на доске и объясняет, где должны располагаться игроки (как можно ближе друг к другу, заставляя соперника играть горизонтально).
Анализируя футбольный стиль экзотических сборных – Коста-Рики и Эквадора – немцы отталкивались от культурного бэкграунда этих стран. «Когда испанцы высадились в Южной Америке, Коста-Рика их интересовала меньше всего, потому что там нечем было поживиться, – объяснял игрокам один из аналитиков сборной. – У них не было огромных запасов золота и серебра. Серьезные войны миновали этот регион, поэтому люди здесь просто наслаждаются жизнью и делятся этой философией с другими. Их лидер Ванчопе – единственный, кто может сыграть агрессивно; остальные счастливы и миролюбивы».
Игроки могли обсуждать тренерские решения. Лев перед каждым матчем советовался с Баллаком
«На поле не должно быть случайных действий, – объяснял Йоги. – На любое развитие событий у нас готов ответ. Важно, чтобы футболисты тоже понимали, как реагировать на смену тактики у противника, выход новых игроков, удаление или глупо пропущенный гол в начале игры. Для этого мы перед каждым матчем общаемся с опытными ребятами и работаем с замечаниями».
Лев прокачал сборную в трех главных компонентах, по которым она отставала от других команд:
- быстрая игра в пас,
- постоянное движение игроков,
- ориентация на атаку.
В Бундеслиге до 2006 года сохранялась тенденция к замедлению игры (бесконечные горизонтальные розыгрыши или передачи назад), из-за чего лига по скорости отставала от ведущих чемпионатов. Пример сборной вдохновил многие немецкие клубы пересмотреть философию.
Швайнштайгер плохо бил пенальти на тренировках. В наказание он работал официантом у запасного вратаря Хильдебранда
Тренеры старались насытить каждое занятие стрессовыми ситуациями, чтобы монотонное выполнение заданий не становилось рутиной. К примеру, перед тем, как пробить пенальти, игрок говорил, в какой угол собирается ударить (разумеется, чтобы вратарь не слышал). Тот, кто бил мимо цели или не забивал, получал наказание.
Человек на заднем плане – Олли Кан, помогающий коллеге отбить удар.
К примеру, Швайни однажды хотел пробить в девятку, но не смог поднять мяч, поэтому на дне рождении Арне Фридриха он прислуживал запасному вратарю Тимо Хильдебранду и Марселю Янсену.
Листок с подсказками, которым пользовался Леманн в четвертьфинале, был продан на аукционе за 1 млн евро. Сейчас он хранится в Доме истории ФРГ в Бонне
«На тренировках обычно я отражал 1 удар из 20, – признавался Йенс. – Я не надеялся на свои рефлексы, поэтому мы с тренером вратарей Анди Кепке собирали информацию о бьющих. Перед Аргентиной Анди подготовил мне шпаргалку. Вот только почему-то он написал ее карандашом и я, честно говоря, с трудом ее прочитал».
Леманн взял два аргентинских пенальти из четырех – от Камбьяссо и Айялы, информация по удару последнего совпала на 100%.
Обязательный музыкальный ритуал – песня Dieser Weg Ксавьера Найду. В Германии летом 2006-го от нее нельзя было скрыться
Диджеем в раздевалке сборной был Джеральд Асамоа. Это он познакомил соотечественников с творчеством соул-исполнителя Найду и включал его треки в автобусе и раздевалке. Песня, написанная Ксавьером для крестника и рассказывающая про трудную дорогу жизни, по которой должен пройти каждый, идеально попала в настроение сборной и стала неофициальным гимном команды.
Dieser Weg залетел в топ главного хит-парада Германии и продержался там 79 недель.
Как и другой бестселлер Найду – Was wir alleine nicht schaffen – с рефреном «Каждый день со своими братьями я ощущаю настоящую жизнь».

Вся выручка от реализации билетов на этот фильм (около 4 млн евро) и последующей продажи DVD была направлена в благотворительную организацию по поддержке детей-сирот. На премьере присутствовали игроки сборной, канцлер Германии Ангела Меркель и бургомистр Берлина Клаус Воверайт. Йоги Лев оценил эпизод с серией пенальти: «Было здорово снова пережить те эмоции». «Все супер, – делился впечатлением после просмотра Йенс Леманн. – Особенно мне понравились те сцены, в которых меня не было».
Клинсманн не пришел на премьеру. Он посмотрел фильм позже и остался недоволен. «Меня изобразили каким-то крикливым мотиватором. Я бы не пропустил эти сцены в финальный вариант, если бы увидел их раньше», – сказал он в интервью 11Freunde.
После ЧМ-2006 сборная Германии на пяти следующих крупных турнирах ни разу не опускалась ниже третьего места, став в 2014 году чемпионом мира.

great movie/documentation
Well, I am used to the omni-present criticism of Germans. That’s why I would like to say: well done, Sönke! Great documentation, funny situations. Would have loved to see more of the boot camp in Italy, though;) Looking forward to the DVD release with additional scenes. My friend and me had to smile every other scene. And it was quite an insight to see what happens in the locker room before, during and after a game — especially for someone who (like me) has never played a team sport on a competition level. And even Ballack grew on me — I never really liked him before — which might have to do with my fondness of Werder Bremen, though;)But of course the hero is Torsten «Lutscher» Frings! Why? See for yourself!!

Summer 2006 — The greatest of them all
In the course of four weeks (June 9 until July 9, 2006) Germany was nothing but a huge party. Celebrating the fantastic achievements of our national soccer team.
Sönke Wortmann, the director of this documentation, accompanied the team during this time. «Deutschland — Ein Sommermärchen» gives us a glance behind the curtain.
The beginning is at the same time the most tragical moment. The defeat against Italy along with the grieving players and coaches.
Afterwards the movie chronologically goes the way from the training camp until the semi — final. We are able to see the players in their training sessions, tactical discussions among the coaching staff, and lots of fooling around from the young players like Bastian Schweinsteiger and Lukas Podolski. We can see that a team was growing. We can see the intense sense of community and solidarity among them.
The documentation doesn’t focus on the soccer scenes alone. However, it doesn’t neglect them. We see the goals again, the enthusiastic fans, the hilarious atmosphere which infected the whole country.
I’m glad we also see a lot of what happened apart from the football ground. It’s interesting to see what happened in the dressing room while we (the fans watching on TV) were fetching another drink or going to the toilet or whatever we did during the breaks.
Altogether I can recommend this documentation to everyone who had fun in the great summer 2006. And I recommend it to everyone who considers the Germans to be some non-smiling accurate work-robots.
It was a unique experience. A whole nation was backing up its soccer team. National flags were waving from every car, every house. It was, as if Germany had completely changed over night. That’s why we call it a summer fairy-tale — «Ein Sommermärchen».

Intense inside look of a (failed) dream

After watching the trailer, everyone, who had the chance of participating the world cup this summer in Germany, wishes to watch this movie, especially, if you are a German team sympathizer.
What do you get: 108 Minutes of an intense look of a great team with a lot of young, but talented soccer players from Germany, all the way from about three weeks before the opening match to the last match of the team, the «Third Place match». It isn’t an usual documentary, you only get the main events during the match of the German team.
The movie begins after losing the semifinal against Italy, just watching sad and disappointed players. Then, the whole journey is told, from the fitness training over the first group matches to the finals. You’ll see some funny events during this time, a lot of interviews with both players and staff. You also get the chance to see the last words of the coach before the matches start.
Almost everyone, who watched this movie, felt the atmosphere of those fantastic four weeks here in Germany. You may need to be interested in the sport to enjoy this movie. More than that, you should know at least the main characters (coach Klinsmann e.g.). Otherwise you will have some problems to understand some of the events taking place during the movie.
Bottom line: Midfielder Frings said at the end of the movie: «we (the team) should have deserved more» (meaning more then the third place). After accompanying the team through this movie, you probably say: «you’re definitely right». As viewer, you will realize the broken dream, but you will enjoy this movie.

A report, no documentary.

Wortmann’s «Deutschland. Ein Sommermärchen» does not really contain anything you would’ve missed watching the World Cup on TV (in Germany), it does not contribute additional in-depth information about tactics or any other part of the German team’s methods — yet it does a good job at summing up an event millions won’t forget. Its arguably strongest scene is right at the beginning, showing the team crushed in the dressing room right after losing the semi-finals to Italy. Other than that it follows the German team throughout the 2006 World Cup, showing many nice anecdotes and avoiding any criticism of the team itself, true to Klinsmann’s spirit.

Exploiting the World Cup to the max!

I think this documentary is very typical of Germans in particular and of people in general. Now, we have all seen the national team play the World Cup and we were very satisfied with the outcome of the tournament (funnily enough, when Germany made runner’s up in 2002, people weren’t as frantic about Germany and the German team as they are now, after the World Cup 2006 IN Germany). And when I watched the matches, I observed the unaggressive and unobtrusive birth of what news magazines called the NEW NATIONALISM. I didn’t really take part in this, but I didn’t mind it either (I just thought: Oh, O.K. why not, after fifty years of forbidden patriotism, let the baby have his bottle).
But this documentary is overdoing it a bit. First of all, I didn’t like Sönke Wortmanns DAS WUNDER VON BERN, because it was way too corny as a movie and it didn’t discuss the controversial link between German soccer and German nationalism shortly after WWII at all (For example, it didn’t mention how Peco Bauwens, the head of the German soccer association, held a speech just after Germany won the World Cup in 1954, talking about the connection between physical education and nationalism in a way you’d probably only expect it from someone like Hitler).
And now this: A film that takes us on a trip into the locker room for the one and only reason to satisfy our curiosity. We don’t really learn anything new about the strategy of coach Jürgen Klinsmann or about the physical part of soccer. This documentary quenches nothing but our thirst for the invasion of privacy. In a way, it is not very different from Big Brother: We do not satisfy ourselves any longer with seeing our soccer players on the field, no, we have to follow them everywhere: into the locker rooms, into the hallways of the stadiums’ catacombs, everywhere! I still don’t understand why the soccer players let Wortmann invade their privacy to such an extent. I can only think of two reasons: money and vanity! And Wortmann is a copycat, too. He knew that a French director had had an incredible success doing a documentary on the French team in 1998, when the French won the World Cup. He knew that a lot of money was to be made on such a documentary, and that this was an opportunity he couldn’t miss.
Now, I know that people are going to say: If you are so against it, why did you go and see it. The reason is: I am like everyone else. Sometimes when I go shopping I look at all these magazines such as GALA, BUNTE and so on (For the non-German readers: these are magazines that solely discuss the private life of celebrities or wannabe celebrities), and I catch myself reading or leafing through one or two of them. It’s the same mechanism that comes into play when you witness a car accident: You look! You watch the ambulance, the casualties, the police, because you are so unbelievably curious. And this very same mechanism made me watch this documentary. I watched it out of pure curiosity, but I didn’t really learn anything watching it. And, on me,it had the same effect as a car accident: I felt ashamed of my curiosity!

They are people like me and you ..
I remember watching sort of a similar movie concerning France winning the WC in 1998. It was a phenomenal movie and I thought, french players are something special in terms of still being in a «growing-up» phase, making fun with others and just having a good time while earning their money.
This movie is great, it reveals, that all of this guys, even though most of them a millionaires, are still humans, who live their life like u and me. Although I am half German too, I never thought my fellow men could behave like the multicultural team of France, but they do ! I think u get a great view of the German Team, if u don’t already know it. If you watch this movie, i think you will understand, why this Team had such a great success. Wortmann shows and mixture of guys, who perfectly match up. Young guns like Schweinsteiger and Podolski, making jokes all the time, just like the young boys do, when I go out of my house and ol’ «rabbits» (Thats the way we call it in Germany) like Nowotny and Kahn, supporting the Team whenever they can.
The movie makes you feel connected to these guys, because it takes away some prejudices and wipes away the cut and dried opinions of them working wonders. Jürgen Klinsmann puts up the same statements like a 7th league coach, talking to a defender («He will smell your breath all the time, Arne!»).
In a nutshell, after watching the movie, I think if I would meet Podolski on the street court next to my house, and if he really had time for it, he would never reject playing some One on One soccer games with me and joking about passing girls ..

boring documentary…
In summer, I watched the World Championship with enthusiasm. Having heard that director Sönke Wortmann were with the German team and would make a movie, I was really interested and expected fascinating impressions «from back office». But the result is disappointing: Jürgen Klinsmann is shouting and motivating the team all the time, the players are really engaged, joking around or answering simple questions and the games are repeated once again in short versions with all goals. But there are no views on the players’ relations (except the competition between Lehmann and Kahn), moments of conflicts or controversies have found no way into the movie (perhaphs, there was nothing than harmony…) and no one in the film is really portrayed as an individual. The movie is an documentary which could have been made by any DFB official (German Football Association) who wants to produce a big seized promotion video. Maybe, Sönke Wortmann earns enough money to work on a better movie in the following time…

Du bist Deutschland/ You are Germany
I saw this movie on Friday and I found it to be very amusing and interesting. I consider myself as a huge fan so I was thrilled to see a halftime speak of the coach during a game or how the team management successfully created a brilliant team spirit. Meanwhile people in the cinema cheered when Germany scored or Lehmann saved a penalty, it was a little bit like during the world cup. Wortmann did a great job in silently observing the German team, so you really felt as you were a part of this whole great event. Finally I’d like to say that everybody that enjoy the world cup as much as I did and who took part in the whole public viewing thing should go and watch this movie. It brings back the feelings and memories of the wonderful (soccer) summer. It was really a summer-fairy tail.

This movie is phenomenal. It’s brings you back to your feelings during the world championship tournament. Wortmann did a great job to give the viewer a look to that, what you did not see on free TV during the tournament. A a German, you will love this movie and if you’re not German… well, you can enjoy it too. For myself i had to say, it’s a bit sad, that Wortmann did not get more intense closer looks about the DFB-Team, but i think, the way he did his work was great. The movie catches the atmosphere that take place in Germany for the three weeks of the World Cup, and brings is right back in your living room… or anywhere else, where you watch this movie. (PS: sorry, if my English is not very good)

Unglaublich tolles Jahr. Schöne Erinnerung an 2006. Leider hat es nur zu Platz 3 gereicht. Was wäre nur gewesen, wenn wir Weltmeister geworden wären.

Deutschland. Ein Sommermarchen- DVD release
Hello, I am a huge Michael Ballack fan and of course, a fan of the German soccer team. It broke my heart to watch them lose against Italy and thus, lose their chance to win the World Cup.
I live in the US, and so haven’t yet watched the German documentary: ‘Deutschland. Ein Sommermarchen’ and it’s also very difficult to find any information related to this film.
Does anyone have an idea about when the DVD release of this documentary is slated for? Has a release date been announced yet? I hope that it would not be too far into the future. I would appreciate any web-links or information. Thank you.

great movie/documentation
Well, I am used to the omni-present criticism of Germans. That’s why I would like to say: well done, Sönke! Great documentation, funny situations. Would have loved to see more of the boot camp in Italy, though;) Looking forward to the DVD release with additional scenes. My friend and me had to smile every other scene. And it was quite an insight to see what happens in the locker room before, during and after a game — especially for someone who (like me) has never played a team sport on a competition level. And even Ballack grew on me — I never really liked him before — which might have to do with my fondness of Werder Bremen, though;)But of course the hero is Torsten «Lutscher» Frings! Why? See for yourself!!

Summer 2006 — The greatest of them all
In the course of four weeks (June 9 until July 9, 2006) Germany was nothing but a huge party. Celebrating the fantastic achievements of our national soccer team.
Sönke Wortmann, the director of this documentation, accompanied the team during this time. «Deutschland — Ein Sommermärchen» gives us a glance behind the curtain.
The beginning is at the same time the most tragical moment. The defeat against Italy along with the grieving players and coaches.
Afterwards the movie chronologically goes the way from the training camp until the semi — final. We are able to see the players in their training sessions, tactical discussions among the coaching staff, and lots of fooling around from the young players like Bastian Schweinsteiger and Lukas Podolski. We can see that a team was growing. We can see the intense sense of community and solidarity among them.
The documentation doesn’t focus on the soccer scenes alone. However, it doesn’t neglect them. We see the goals again, the enthusiastic fans, the hilarious atmosphere which infected the whole country.
I’m glad we also see a lot of what happened apart from the football ground. It’s interesting to see what happened in the dressing room while we (the fans watching on TV) were fetching another drink or going to the toilet or whatever we did during the breaks.
Altogether I can recommend this documentation to everyone who had fun in the great summer 2006. And I recommend it to everyone who considers the Germans to be some non-smiling accurate work-robots.
It was a unique experience. A whole nation was backing up its soccer team. National flags were waving from every car, every house. It was, as if Germany had completely changed over night. That’s why we call it a summer fairy-tale — «Ein Sommermärchen».

Intense inside look of a (failed) dream

After watching the trailer, everyone, who had the chance of participating the world cup this summer in Germany, wishes to watch this movie, especially, if you are a German team sympathizer.
What do you get: 108 Minutes of an intense look of a great team with a lot of young, but talented soccer players from Germany, all the way from about three weeks before the opening match to the last match of the team, the «Third Place match». It isn’t an usual documentary, you only get the main events during the match of the German team.
The movie begins after losing the semifinal against Italy, just watching sad and disappointed players. Then, the whole journey is told, from the fitness training over the first group matches to the finals. You’ll see some funny events during this time, a lot of interviews with both players and staff. You also get the chance to see the last words of the coach before the matches start.
Almost everyone, who watched this movie, felt the atmosphere of those fantastic four weeks here in Germany. You may need to be interested in the sport to enjoy this movie. More than that, you should know at least the main characters (coach Klinsmann e.g.). Otherwise you will have some problems to understand some of the events taking place during the movie.
Bottom line: Midfielder Frings said at the end of the movie: «we (the team) should have deserved more» (meaning more then the third place). After accompanying the team through this movie, you probably say: «you’re definitely right». As viewer, you will realize the broken dream, but you will enjoy this movie.

A report, no documentary.

Wortmann’s «Deutschland. Ein Sommermärchen» does not really contain anything you would’ve missed watching the World Cup on TV (in Germany), it does not contribute additional in-depth information about tactics or any other part of the German team’s methods — yet it does a good job at summing up an event millions won’t forget. Its arguably strongest scene is right at the beginning, showing the team crushed in the dressing room right after losing the semi-finals to Italy. Other than that it follows the German team throughout the 2006 World Cup, showing many nice anecdotes and avoiding any criticism of the team itself, true to Klinsmann’s spirit.

Exploiting the World Cup to the max!

I think this documentary is very typical of Germans in particular and of people in general. Now, we have all seen the national team play the World Cup and we were very satisfied with the outcome of the tournament (funnily enough, when Germany made runner’s up in 2002, people weren’t as frantic about Germany and the German team as they are now, after the World Cup 2006 IN Germany). And when I watched the matches, I observed the unaggressive and unobtrusive birth of what news magazines called the NEW NATIONALISM. I didn’t really take part in this, but I didn’t mind it either (I just thought: Oh, O.K. why not, after fifty years of forbidden patriotism, let the baby have his bottle).
But this documentary is overdoing it a bit. First of all, I didn’t like Sönke Wortmanns DAS WUNDER VON BERN, because it was way too corny as a movie and it didn’t discuss the controversial link between German soccer and German nationalism shortly after WWII at all (For example, it didn’t mention how Peco Bauwens, the head of the German soccer association, held a speech just after Germany won the World Cup in 1954, talking about the connection between physical education and nationalism in a way you’d probably only expect it from someone like Hitler).
And now this: A film that takes us on a trip into the locker room for the one and only reason to satisfy our curiosity. We don’t really learn anything new about the strategy of coach Jürgen Klinsmann or about the physical part of soccer. This documentary quenches nothing but our thirst for the invasion of privacy. In a way, it is not very different from Big Brother: We do not satisfy ourselves any longer with seeing our soccer players on the field, no, we have to follow them everywhere: into the locker rooms, into the hallways of the stadiums’ catacombs, everywhere! I still don’t understand why the soccer players let Wortmann invade their privacy to such an extent. I can only think of two reasons: money and vanity! And Wortmann is a copycat, too. He knew that a French director had had an incredible success doing a documentary on the French team in 1998, when the French won the World Cup. He knew that a lot of money was to be made on such a documentary, and that this was an opportunity he couldn’t miss.
Now, I know that people are going to say: If you are so against it, why did you go and see it. The reason is: I am like everyone else. Sometimes when I go shopping I look at all these magazines such as GALA, BUNTE and so on (For the non-German readers: these are magazines that solely discuss the private life of celebrities or wannabe celebrities), and I catch myself reading or leafing through one or two of them. It’s the same mechanism that comes into play when you witness a car accident: You look! You watch the ambulance, the casualties, the police, because you are so unbelievably curious. And this very same mechanism made me watch this documentary. I watched it out of pure curiosity, but I didn’t really learn anything watching it. And, on me,it had the same effect as a car accident: I felt ashamed of my curiosity!

They are people like me and you ..
I remember watching sort of a similar movie concerning France winning the WC in 1998. It was a phenomenal movie and I thought, french players are something special in terms of still being in a «growing-up» phase, making fun with others and just having a good time while earning their money.
This movie is great, it reveals, that all of this guys, even though most of them a millionaires, are still humans, who live their life like u and me. Although I am half German too, I never thought my fellow men could behave like the multicultural team of France, but they do ! I think u get a great view of the German Team, if u don’t already know it. If you watch this movie, i think you will understand, why this Team had such a great success. Wortmann shows and mixture of guys, who perfectly match up. Young guns like Schweinsteiger and Podolski, making jokes all the time, just like the young boys do, when I go out of my house and ol’ «rabbits» (Thats the way we call it in Germany) like Nowotny and Kahn, supporting the Team whenever they can.
The movie makes you feel connected to these guys, because it takes away some prejudices and wipes away the cut and dried opinions of them working wonders. Jürgen Klinsmann puts up the same statements like a 7th league coach, talking to a defender («He will smell your breath all the time, Arne!»).
In a nutshell, after watching the movie, I think if I would meet Podolski on the street court next to my house, and if he really had time for it, he would never reject playing some One on One soccer games with me and joking about passing girls ..

boring documentary…
In summer, I watched the World Championship with enthusiasm. Having heard that director Sönke Wortmann were with the German team and would make a movie, I was really interested and expected fascinating impressions «from back office». But the result is disappointing: Jürgen Klinsmann is shouting and motivating the team all the time, the players are really engaged, joking around or answering simple questions and the games are repeated once again in short versions with all goals. But there are no views on the players’ relations (except the competition between Lehmann and Kahn), moments of conflicts or controversies have found no way into the movie (perhaphs, there was nothing than harmony…) and no one in the film is really portrayed as an individual. The movie is an documentary which could have been made by any DFB official (German Football Association) who wants to produce a big seized promotion video. Maybe, Sönke Wortmann earns enough money to work on a better movie in the following time…

Du bist Deutschland/ You are Germany
I saw this movie on Friday and I found it to be very amusing and interesting. I consider myself as a huge fan so I was thrilled to see a halftime speak of the coach during a game or how the team management successfully created a brilliant team spirit. Meanwhile people in the cinema cheered when Germany scored or Lehmann saved a penalty, it was a little bit like during the world cup. Wortmann did a great job in silently observing the German team, so you really felt as you were a part of this whole great event. Finally I’d like to say that everybody that enjoy the world cup as much as I did and who took part in the whole public viewing thing should go and watch this movie. It brings back the feelings and memories of the wonderful (soccer) summer. It was really a summer-fairy tail.
