Моя мать была неудачницей. Злой и обиженной на жизнь. И всё бы ничего, но свою злобу по поводу неудач она вымещала на мне. Орала каждый божий день за каждую ерунду. За пятно на одежде. — Мам, а где мой папа? – спрашивал я иногда.

Ну, да. А я соль просыпаю да вещи рву и пачкаю. Ответа на свой вопрос я так и не получил. Кто был моим отцом? Матери не везло в личной жизни точно так же, как и во всём остальном. Как-то раз, насыпая семечки из пакета себе в тарелку, я просыпал добрую горсть на пол.

— Бестолочь! – заорала мать. – Я только полы помыла. Ни черта не делаешь, так хоть не пакости.

И отвесила мне такую затрещину, что я чуть не пробил головой шкаф, около которого стоял. Гена, который пил чай, сидя за столом, и подпрыгнул от неожиданности ещё тогда, когда мать завопила, стукнул кулаком по столу.

— Что? – притихшим голосом спросила мать.

— Ничего. Дай мне пряник, пожалуйста.

После этого никто не произнёс ни звука, пока я не вышел из кухни. Вышел я не сразу – сначала собрал с пола всё семечки в гробовой тишине. А когда уже был в своей комнате, услышал, что Гена громко ругается. Мне стало дико любопытно. Я, рискуя быть пойманным, пошёл подслушивать.

— … чтобы больше я такого никогда не видел! Как ты можешь? Да за что?

— Я устаю. – оправдывалась мать. – Работа, дом. А он не уважает мой труд.

— Во-первых, он – ребёнок! А во-вторых, ты научила его уважать твой труд? Ты вообще уделяешь ему время? Чем-то занимаешься с ним?

— И как часто у вас это… происходит?

— Да что ты, Геночка, что ты! Ну какое часто? Ну отвесила пацану подзатыльник сгоряча, с кем не бывает?

— Со мной не бывает. Я не бью тех, кто не может мне ответить. Это низко.

Мне хотелось вбежать в кухню и сказать, что она врет! Что бьет она меня часто! За всё. А на самом деле за то, что не получается у неё. Мои косяки лишь предлог. Но Гена так растрогал меня своим заступничеством, что я не мог ни бежать, ни говорить – слезы комом стояли у меня в горле.

— Галя, если ещё раз такое случится, я уйду. Я не буду жить с тобой, с такой…

Мать клятвенно заверила Гену, что больше никогда. Что поразительно, она сдержала своё слово. А Гена с той поры сам начал уделять мне время. Интересовался моей учебой, радовался отличным оценкам. Брал меня с собой на рыбалку – это был его любимый отдых. Затеяв ремонт, Гена подошёл ко мне:

— Саня, будешь помогать? Или по учёбе занят?

Я с радостью согласился помогать. И очень старался всё делать правильно. А Геннадий хвалил меня без конца. Мне кажется, что гораздо больше хвалил, чем я того заслуживал.

Когда мы закончили кухню и любовались на дело рук своих, я неожиданно для самого себя спросил:

— Как пойдёт. – пожал плечами Гена.

— Ясно. – с бесконечной горечью вздохнул я.

А Гена спохватился, присел на корточки и заглянул мне в глаза:

— Я постараюсь. Честно.

— А я могу звать тебя папой?

— Если захочешь – конечно! Конечно да, сынок!

Я звал его папой. Сначала неуверенно и тихо. Потом громко и часто. Я полюбил Гену всей душой и ночами молился, чтобы он задержался с нами подольше. Видимо, кто-то там наверху услышал мои молитвы. Мать забеременела, и они с Геной поженились. Я тогда жутко испугался, что получив собственного ребёнка, Гена не будет так любить меня. Однажды они пришли из поликлиники – у мамы уже был приличный живот – и отчим радостно объявил:

— А у нас девочка будет! Я так счастлив. Полный комплект теперь.

А мать ласково потрепала меня по волосам. Она изменилась по отношению ко мне, когда обрела женское счастье и поняла, что счастье будет долгим. Гена не только стал хорошим отчимом, но и вернул мне мать.

Родилась Варя. И Гена очень любил свою дочь, но ко мне продолжил относиться также, как раньше. Варька была интересной. Агукала чего-то там, улыбалась беззубым ртом и не умела управлять своими руками и ногами. Сестра росла здоровой и красивой. Я защищал её и оберегал. Иногда думал, что было бы с матерью и со мной, если бы не появился в нашей жизни такой вот Геннадий. Мрак! Думать было страшно.

Варюхе было девять, когда я уехал учиться в столицу. Школу я окончил с золотой медалью. Варя, которая относилась к учебе с ленцой, часто выслушивала от отца:

— Бери пример с Сашки! Парень знает, чего хочет. Старается. А тебе бы всё в телефоне сидеть.

Варя показывала Гене язык, а потом обнимала за шею, и он таял.

На перроне мать вцепилась в меня, как будто провожала на войну.

— Мам, да ты чего? Я же приезжать буду!

— Прости меня, сынок. Прости меня! Прости за всё! – и ревела белугой.

Гена обнял нас всех, и Варька куда-то там прилепилась, хотя до этого фоткалась на фоне поезда. Наобнимались, я сказал маме на ухо, что она лучшая мама на свете, и укатил в Москву.

В Москве я поступил в университет и нашёл подработку. Денег не хватало, но я копил на подарки своим. Особенно почему-то хотелось порадовать Гену. Сдав зимнюю сессию, я поехал домой на каникулы. Подарил Варе красивый чехол на телефон, матери серебряные сережки, а Гене – крутые снасти для рыбалки. Отчим прослезился.

— Даёшь, мужик! Спасибо.

Вечером мы сидели за столом, мать в честь моего приезда наготовила разносолов. Гена вызвал меня в кухню и негромко сказал.

— Саня, тут такое дело… объявился твой отец родной. Понимаю, спустя столько лет. Но он пока в городе, оставил телефон. Мать была против, но я взял. Подумал, вдруг ты захочешь…

Я ошарашенно молчал минуту. В голове возникли не самые радостные флэшбеки.

— Мама, а где мой папа?

И материн истерический крик в ответ. Гена ждал, внимательно глядя на меня. В глазах почему-то читалась тревога, в руке зажат листок бумаги с телефоном. Я взял бумажку, разорвал и швырнул в мусорное ведро.

— Бать, ты с ума сошёл? Какой такой ещё родной отец? Ты мой отец. Никаких других отцов мне не надо.

Он снова прослезился, и мы крепко обнялись. Стареет батя… становится сентиментальным.
