Set in 1959 Miami, Florida, shortly after the Cuban Revolution, Magic City tells the story of Ike Evans (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), the owner of Miami’s most glamorous hotel, the Miramar Playa. Conception[edit]

The thing that’s really cool for me about Miami Beach is you have this dichotomy between sunlight and family and happiness and innocence and then at night, darker, stranger mob conspiracy stuff sort of comes out. It seems like a storytelling engine. You can just keep writing about how those two worlds smash into each other.

— Mitch Glazer[23]

Magic City was created by Miami native Mitch Glazer, who wrote the series around his experiences growing up there: he once worked as a cabana boy in a Miami Beach hotel, his father was an electrical engineer at the city’s grand hotels in the late 1950s, and he grew up listening to stories of the exploits of hotel staff and clientele.[23][24] Many of the incidents Glazer relates in the series «are based on stories that happened, that I saw, or older brothers and sisters or my parents told me.» As a journalist, he did extensive research on what was happening in the lobbies of hotels in late 1950s and early 1960s: «There’s wiretaps—tapes they’ve made public now—where the CIA gives Sam Giancana and Johnny Roselli $300,000 and poison powder to kill [Fidel] Castro in the Boom Boom Room in the Fontainebleau Hotel,» he said.[23] Included in the series, Glazer states, will be Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) activities in Cuba and issues connected to the Civil Rights Movement. He first envisioned Magic City as a feature film, but said he quickly realized he had more stories to tell than would fit in a film.[24]

Glazer had written different versions of Magic City for years. He originally wrote and sold it to CBS, who eventually let it go to the Starz network. «CBS was really nice to me and generous in letting it go to Starz. It’s not a procedural, it’s not a franchise. It needs to be allowed to do the sexuality and violence and the things that were part of Miami Beach in the 1959», he said.[23] In 2007, Chris Albrecht (subsequently Starz network’s president and C.E.O.) was fired from HBO and joined Glazer and some of his friends for a research expedition to Havana.[25] «It was an insane group,» Glazer remembered. «Jimmy Caan and Robert Duvall and Benicio Del Toro.» They were visiting a Havana hotel designed by the architect Morris Lapidus when Glazer remarked to Albrecht, «You know, I grew up in this kind of hotel. My father worked with Morris Lapidus on the Fontainebleau Hotel and Eden Roc Hotel as an electrical engineer.» In 2009, after Albrecht became president and C.E.O. of Starz, Glazer recalled, «I sent him a script I had written years before, and he called me literally hours later and said, ‘This is amazing, let’s do this.'»[25]

Reception[edit]

Critical reception[edit]

The first season received mixed reviews from critics. Review aggregator Metacritic calculated a score of 56/100 based on 27 reviews.[26] Glenn Garvin of the Miami Herald said of the series: «The sordid ugliness that festers inside Magic City’s voluptuously beautiful wrappings makes irresistible television.»[27] The Contra Costa Times’ Chuck Barney praised the cast and visual style. He said in his review: «Through the early episodes, nothing really happens that you couldn’t see coming. Still, the setting is so seductive, the period details so vivid and the acting so stellar, that it’s as intoxicating as a potent mojito.»[28] NJ.com criticized the gratuitous nudity («Hey, boobs!») in many dressing room scenes.[29]

Awards and accolades[edit]

2013 Golden Globe Award Best Supporting Actor – Series, Miniseries or Television Film Danny Huston Nominated [citation needed]
2013 Young Artist Award Best Performance in a TV Series — Supporting Young Actress Taylor Blackwell Nominated [30]

Movie spin-off[edit]

A feature film is in the works and is set to be directed by Mitch Glazer. Stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Olga Kurylenko, Danny Huston, and Kelly Lynch are set to reprise their roles. Bruce Willis and Bill Murray will also have starring roles.[31]
As of September 2021, there have been no further updates from either Starz or Glazer on the film, leaving its production as increasingly unlikely.

Home media[edit]

The entire Magic City series was released by Starz and Anchor Bay in Blu-ray and DVD formats on May 13, 2014.[32]

Magic City is a prominent strip club in Atlanta, founded in 1985[4] and currently owned by Michael “Magic” Barney.[1][2]

Hip hop and rap ties[edit]

Described by Dan Gartland of Sports Illustrated as a «legendary strip club that should be familiar to anyone who knows anything about rap music»,[5] Magic City has well-documented ties with the trap and hip hop scene. It was partially responsible for launching the careers of Future[2][6] and Migos.[6] DJ Esco worked at Magic City.[7] Magic City has hosted performances with Young Thug, Future and 2 Chainz.[8] DC the Brain Supreme of Tag Team worked at Magic City when he released the hit «Whoomp! (There It Is)».[9]

In popular culture[edit]

Several rap and hip-hop songs mention Magic City,[10] including «Strip Club» by The 2 Live Crew,[11] «Magic City Monday» by Jeezy[12] and «Magic» by Future.[13] The reference to «Monday» is because Magic City is «supposedly the Holy Grail of Atlanta strip clubs on Monday nights».[14] In July 2015, GQ released a documentary Magic City about the strip club, directed by Lauren Greenfield.[15] Late 2018, Drake collaborated with Magic City to create the «Scorpion City» merchandise collection.[8]

Notable visitors and events[edit]

In addition to the artists mentioned in the § Hip hop and rap ties section, Magic City has been visited by 2Pac and Biggie,[2] and Michael Jordan.[9] In November 2018, Magic City was temporarily refashioned as «Future City» to celebrate Future’s thirty-fifth birthday, and was visited by him, Drake, Lil Yachty, Jacquees, Pastor Troy, and others.[16] Drake allegedly had an armored truck deliver $100,000 in cash to the strip club.[16] In December 2018, Atlanta United FC players celebrated their MLS Cup victory at Magic City.[5]

Magic City’s food menu includes «Louwill Lemon Pepper BBQ» chicken wings, named after professional basketball player Lou Williams, who played for the Atlanta Hawks (2012–2014).[17] During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, he was on an approved absence from the NBA Bubble to attend the funeral of a family friend in Atlanta.[18][19] Afterwards, he visited Magic City, where rapper Jack Harlow posted a picture on Instagram of him and Williams at the club.[20] Williams, who said he was at the club for food, was required by the NBA to undergo a 10-day quarantine before re-entering the bubble.[17][19]

Magic City

I’m on the high ridge looking down

While we’re evolving, I get old

If I get back then I’ll be grateful

Look, there’s a billboard on the moon

Let me take you this far

This crossing isn’t much to me

There’s lightning in the storm clouds

And I’ll send you there to stay

You got me lost in Magic City

You got me questioning it all

I hope that I make it home by Wednesday

And this Magic City lets me go

Magic City

Magic City

Magic City

Magic City

You put me up here in the penthouse

And painted me in red, white and blue

I filled the canyons with my ego

Look, there’s a billboard on the moon

You got me lost in Magic City

You got me questioning it all

I hope that I make it home by Wednesday

And this Magic City lets me go

Перевод песни Magic City
