Как пишется микаса аккерман на английском

Mikasa Ackerman (ミカサ・アッカーマン Mikasa Akkāman?) is one of the two deuteragonists of the series, along with Armin Arlert.

After her parents were murdered by human traffickers, Mikasa was rescued by Eren Yeager and lived with him and his parents, Grisha and Carla, before the fall of Wall Maria. She is the last descendant of the Shogun clan that stayed on Paradis Island, thereby related to the Azumabito family, and holds significant political power in Hizuru.[12]

Though she desires only to live a peaceful life, Mikasa entered into the military—where she is considered the best soldier among the 104th Training Corps. She later enlists in the Survey Corps to follow and protect Eren, becoming one of its greatest assets. She is currently serving as an officer (上官 Jōkan?) in the Corps.

Appearance

Mikasa is a fairly tall and well-toned woman. She is of partial Asian heritage, with pale skin, gray eyes, and shaggy black hair that was long until she cut it to chin-length. By the year 854, her hair is shorter and cut up to the back of her neck, though she simultaneously wears noticeably longer bangs. She bears a tattoo of the Azumabito family crest on the outside of her right wrist. There is a small scar below her right eye, which was due to an injury delivered by Eren’s Titan during the Battle of Trost District.[13] By 857, Mikasa’s hair grew noticeably long and is tied in a ponytail.[14]

Mikasa often wears the original Survey Corps uniform, whose equipment is horizontally at her hips, with a white blouse underneath and a black scarf that she almost always wears.[15] She also wears a green cape with the wings of freedom on the back during some missions.

When off duty, Mikasa’s casual attire consists of a simple knee-length white dress, a light cardigan, brown boots, and her signature black scarf.

While in Marley, Mikasa wears a black Survey Corps uniform, which features a breastplate with the Survey Corps symbol; many belts to accommodate all the different gear; support rods around her chest for the gas canister; and tall black boots. She also carries guns, thunder spears, an additional gas tank, and canisters running vertically down her legs.[16]

Personality

Before living with the Yeager family, Mikasa appeared to be a cheerful, outgoing, and gentle child. Her innocence allowed her to push anxious thoughts to the back of her mind, continuing to live with her parents and loved ones happily. Growing up, Mikasa has become emotionally withdrawn and noticeably dangerous, sometimes intimidating her enemies or even her comrades. She is quite stoic and level headed, rarely seen to lose her cool or be at a loss of what to do, no matter how bleak the situation seems to be. Her will is remarkably strong, demonstrated when she managed to remain so outwardly calm when Eren was presumed dead; only Armin could tell that she was battling with the pain of losing him.[17]

Mikasa cares deeply for her friends and caretakers, seeing them as the last remnants of a family she cannot afford to lose.[18] She also appears to have a soft spot for children, evidenced by her bowing to a young girl she saved and her instantly saving a Marleyan soldier, despite the latter having earlier killed one of her comrades. Mikasa is not completely immune to the effects of her emotions, however: Her strong feelings for her beloved ones, particularly when they are in harm’s way, does at times cloud her judgment in fury—sometimes to the endangerment of herself and others.[19] A notable example was when Mikasa briefly gave in to her grief over Eren’s apparent demise and lost the will to live, forgetting her responsibility for the lives of the soldiers she took upon herself to lead in the process. However, she was reawakened by her memories of Eren and a made decision to never give up again, as her memories would die with her.

Mikasa’s protective attitude towards Eren

From an early age, Mikasa was unusually perceptive, aware of the harshness of nature by witnessing the manner in which predators hunt and kill weaker prey. Her peace was shattered when a band of criminals brutally murdered her parents before her eyes in a failed kidnapping attempt, only saving herself and her rescuer when she managed to abandon all inhibition and hesitation to kill one of her assailants.[20] Following this traumatic event, Mikasa would gain a generally cynical outlook on life and accept the world as a cruel place where only those who are strong are able to survive.[21] Her determination to protect her beloved ones as much as possible has contributed greatly to her phenomenal skills as a soldier. Though being among the best of the best, she remains humble and refrains from putting on airs or displaying arrogance.

Mikasa has a strong sense of right and wrong, doing everything she can to make her most impulsive friends follow what she thinks is the right track.[22] In spite of this, she is well aware that she cannot always sway them in decisions and makes it a point to follow them wherever they go, just so that she can be around to help out when trouble arises.[23] The sole reason she enlisted in the military and joined the Survey Corps after her graduation was to keep an eye on Eren, despite the fact that she truly wished to live out the rest of her days in relative peace within the Walls alongside him.

Mikasa’s bond with Eren is undoubtedly her most important relationship and the one that defines her. Her personality as a teenager was very much influenced by Eren, who told her she stood no chance of survival if she did not fight for it.[24] His words continued to stay with her, and she automatically recalled them to spur her on when she was close to death. Mikasa wears the black scarf Eren gave her when they first met, holding on to it as a source of strength and comfort when she is upset.[25] She had openly wept tears of relief at his safety and developed vengeful grudges towards those who harm him, from enemies to her own superiors. She blushed when it was insinuated she and Eren were lovers;[26] furthermore, after he insulted her and stated that he had always hated her, she was visibly hurt and eventually left behind the scarf he had given her.[27]

While she would regain the scarf from Louise,[28] Mikasa would not wear it again until moments before confronting Eren following his initiation of the Rumbling.[29] Mikasa’s sacrifice of a life with her beloved Eren and choosing to defy and kill him is ultimately the reason Ymir Fritz was freed and the Titans vanishing from the world.[30] Mikasa grieves for Eren as she visits his grave,[14] and would continue to regularly visit it with her new family for several decades until passing away of old age while wearing the scarf.[31]

History

Mikasa was born to an Asian mother, and her father was a member of the Ackerman clan.[32] She lived peacefully with her parents in the farmlands of Wall Maria, helping them since a young age. Mikasa underwent a painful scarring ritual from her mother, who cut into her skin the mark of their family.[33]

Eren gave Mikasa his scarf

Being the last of their race made her mother and Mikasa high value targets to robbers. When she was only 9 years old, a group of traffickers killed her parents and attempted to kidnap her for the purpose of selling her in the human-trading market of the Capital’s Underground.[32] Frightened and shocked, Mikasa was rescued by Eren Yeager, the son of her family’s doctor. He tricked and killed two of the kidnappers, but he was overwhelmed by the third trafficker and on the verge of being strangled. Eren desperately urged Mikasa to fight to win, who came to realize that the world can be callous and merciless before dispatching the robber from behind, who was trying to kill him.

When Grisha Yeager arrived with members of the Military Police Brigade, Mikasa was given the scarf by Eren and accepted into his family. This event awakened the fighting instincts and perfect self-control that runs in the Ackerman clan.[34] Mikasa then went to live with Eren’s family until the Fall of Wall Maria.[35]

Story

Prologue arc

Mikasa wakes Eren up

Mikasa appears for the first time in year 845 somewhere inside Wall Maria. She is seen waking Eren up, telling him that they need to return to home. She is surprised to see tears in his eyes and asks why he was crying.[36] On their way home, they meet Hannes. Mikasa watches as Eren complains about the soldiers slacking off while on duty.[37] Later, both Eren and Mikasa watch the return of the Survey Corps forces, witnessing yet another failure of their expedition.[38] After returning home, Mikasa tells on Eren, revealing to his parents his desire to join the Survey Corps. Annoyed, Eren leaves, with Mikasa following him. They save Armin, who is being beaten by local bullies and together discuss their desire to go outside the Walls.[39]

Mikasa, Eren and Armin see the Colossus Titan

At that moment, the three kids witness the sudden appearance of an extremely tall Titan peering over the top of Wall Maria. The three are stunned to see one that large, only coming back to their senses when the Titan breaches the Wall’s gate.[40][41] Mikasa and Eren run back to their home to find it crushed and Carla trapped under the debris.[42] In spite of their attempts, Mikasa and Eren are unable to free her, Hannes rescues them as a Titan devours Eren’s mother.[43] Mikasa and Eren are placed on a ship just as the Armored Titan breaks through the inner gate, letting the Titans inside Wall Maria. She witnesses Eren’s vow to kill all the Titans as they are transported to safety.[44]

104th Training Corps arc

After the events of the Wall Maria’s destruction, the government’s desperate attempt to reclaim the lands using the refugees leads to nothing but more casualties. This prompts Mikasa, Eren, and Armin to enroll with the army and become members of the 104th Training Corps.[45]

During their training, Mikasa helps Eren as much as she can as he initially fails to grasp the basics of the vertical maneuvering equipment.[46] They manage to pass the qualifying tests, Mikasa quickly proving her skills and is praised as one of the best trainees in military history.[47] At one point, Mikasa asks Annie Leonhart, a fellow trainee with exceptional skill, to teach her a self-defense technique that she was teaching Eren, which eventually calls for a bet with the 104th Training Corps to see who is the stronger fighter.[48] At the 104th Training Corps’ graduation, she is ranked first in the class.[3]

Captain Levi

As the Survey Corps parade through the street on its way to the gates, Mikasa, Eren and Armin stare at Captain Levi in amazement.[49]

Battle of Trost District arc

Before having the chance to fully apply in the Survey Corps so she can keep Eren safe, the Colossus Titan breaches Wall Rose the same way it did with Wall Maria.[50] Much to her dismay, Mikasa is assigned to the rear guard to help fend off the Titans while the civilians escape into the safety of Wall Sheena.[51] Before fulfilling her duty, she makes Eren promise her not to do anything reckless.[52]

Mikasa kills the abnormal Titan

Later on, as an abnormal Titan approaches the escaping civilians who are blocked at the gate. Mikasa kills it, saving everyone.[53] She then witnesses why the civilians are taking too long to escape; an overloaded cargo cart is blocking the way. Mikasa asks the businessman to move the cart so that the people could escape, but when he refuses, she has to resort threatening him after knocking his guards unconscious, which scares the man enough to relent and move his goods.[54] Seeing a mother and daughter show their gratitude for saving them, Mikasa flashes back to the time she lost her own parents and realizes that Eren is the only family she has left.[55] With the evacuation of Trost District citizens complete, she heads to the front guard in order to aid her comrades.[56]

Mikasa finds that, because the supply team has barricaded itself inside the military headquarters, the surviving trainees no longer have enough gas to retreat.[57] Noticing that Eren is not present, Mikasa confronts Armin and learns that Eren was devoured by a Titan. Despite his clear regret, Mikasa calmly comforts Armin and explains that they must not get emotional in their present predicament. Mikasa rallies the remaining trainees and leads them in a last ditch effort to reach the headquarters.[58]

Because of her grief over Eren’s death, Mikasa rushes ahead of her comrades and quickly expends all of her gas, stranding herself in the middle of Trost.[17] As two Titans close in on her, she contemplates giving up but is motivated to keep fighting by memories of Eren.[59] When Mikasa stands up to kill the Titan in front of her, another Titan comes running from behind and saves her.[60] This Titan, which ignores Mikasa, gives Armin enough time to rescue Mikasa and they both continue heading to the supply HQ.[61] As they watch the Attack Titan continue killing other Titans, they hatch a plan to lure it to the HQ and relieve the siege there.[62] With its help, the trainees manage to successfully refill their gas tanks and have clear access to the Wall.[63]

Mikasa protecting Eren and Armin

However, as they watch the Attack Titan dispose of the last Titans surrounding them, Eren appears out the nape of its neck.[64] Overcome with relief that Eren is alive, Mikasa quickly rescues and embraces him, everyone leaving for the Wall.[65] However, Jean, along with Annie, Reiner, and Bertolt are ordered to hand Eren over to superior officers under the command of Kitz Weilman and to treat the incident as something confidential.[66] Their refusal to do so causes Mikasa and her friends to be accused of treason and find themselves surrounded by Captain Weilman’s men, who are prompt to execute them.[67] Mikasa attempts to defend Eren by drawing her blades and threatening to kill anyone who would try to harm Eren,[68] but witnessing Eren’s Titan form fighting in Trost District, Weilman does not hesitate and orders a cannon to fire at them in spite of the latter’s claim that he is a human.[69] Eren uses his power to block the cannonball and tries to think of a plan of escape. He proposes that they either try to flee over the Walls and escape into the Titan territory or have Armin attempt to persuade the soldiers to spare them, leaving him to choose.[70][71] Armin tries his best to convince the soldiers that Eren’s Titan abilities could help to save humanity, but realizes the commander is far too scared to think rationally. Before the order can be given to fire upon them once more, they are saved when Commander Dot Pixis, head administrator of the southern region, intervenes.[72] They are sent on a mission to plug the breach in the Wall with a rock that only Eren in Titan form can lift.[73]

As the mission commences and Eren goes into Titan form, he loses control and attacks Mikasa before eventually knocking himself out.[74][75] The elite team, led by Ian Dietrich, Rico Brzenska and Mitabi Jarnach, designated to defend Eren as he carries the rock quarrel among themselves about what to do next.[76] Mikasa is on the verge of attacking them until Ian orders everyone to continue protecting Eren until he recovers.[77] Thanks to Armin’s intervention, Eren eventually regains his senses and successfully places the rock down, albeit with many casualties. At that moment, they are saved by Levi as he kills the Titans approaching them.[78]

The Female Titan arc

After the battle of Trost District is over, Eren is brought before a military tribunal to decide his future.[79] Despite Mikasa’s best efforts to defend him, she is forced to testify against Eren as his reckless actions have frightened many people in the courtroom.[80] She is also forced to watch helplessly as Eren is assaulted and humiliated by Levi.

Mikasa’s reaction to Eren getting beaten

Some time later, Mikasa and everyone else have their vertical maneuvering equipment inspected in order to find out the culprit who killed the two captured Titans.[81] Later on, Commander Erwin Smith comes to recruit new members for the Survey Corps which is scheduling an expedition within a few months.[82] Many leave except for Mikasa, Reiner, Armin, Sasha, Krista, Ymir, Connie, Jean, Bertolt and a few others.[83]

Mikasa among the new Survey Corps members

Mikasa is then seen to be a part of the 57th expedition.[84] Shortly after leaving for Wall Maria, the Female Titan appears and defeats numerous Survey Corps members. The formation eventually reaches the Titan Forest, with Mikasa being stationed at its outskirts, making sure that no Titans enter the forest.[85] As the Corps is preparing to return to Wall Rose, Mikasa hears the roar of Eren’s Titan and abandons her post to go and help him.[86]

Mikasa finds Eren just in time to see the Female Titan defeat and devour him.[87] After overcoming her initial shock, Mikasa begins an enraged assault on the Female Titan, cutting it up to try to rescue Eren.[88][89] Her attacks prove to be ineffectual against the Titan until she is joined by Levi. Mikasa insists that Eren is still alive and Levi agrees to help rescue him. With Levi coordinating their attacks, they quickly overwhelm the Titan but Mikasa becomes reckless and attempts to kill the Titan against Levi’s orders. Levi is wounded saving her from the Titan, but manages to cut open its jaw in the process. Mikasa retrieves Eren from the Titan’s mouth and the group retreats.[90]

Mikasa ready to battle Annie

Following the Survey Corps’s failure, Armin manages to convince Annie to help them out until they can gather evidence to prove to the King that the Walls need to be protected better.[91] During that time, Mikasa takes a notice of the lack of diligence and honor in the Military Police.[92] She prepares for battle when she gets fed up with Annie’s games and excuses. She takes off her disguise and draws out her sword to fight her, promising to «cut up the Female Titan one more time.»[93]

When Eren is unable to initially transform and shows some hesitancy in fighting Annie, Mikasa berates him and decides to go with Armin to distract Annie until Eren is able to transform.[94] Eventually Eren arrives and starts to fight Annie, but it is made apparent that he is not powerful enough to defeat Annie by himself. Being the strongest and most powerful soldier herself, she decides to take the fight to her.[95] Despite being ordered to pull away by Hange Zoë, Mikasa manages to make it to Annie as she attempted to climb over Wall Sheena to escape to the flat lands. Since Annie had already climbed more than halfway towards the top of the Wall, Eren throws Mikasa upwards so she can catch up with the Female Titan, and cut off all her fingers. She then proceeds to push Annie off to fall to the ground.[96] Annie is therefore captured, but encases herself in a crystal to avoid interrogation.[97] However, it was far from over as Mikasa has just taken noticed of a Titan inside the Wall.[98] As both the Survey Corps and Military Police take an encased Annie underground to detain her, Mikasa realizes the Titan hiding in Wall Sheena is alive, but is too weak to move due to a lack of sunlight.[99] Mikasa remains at Eren’s bedside as Armin and Jean head down to a meeting involving Erwin and the Military Police.[100]

Clash of the Titans arc

Mikasa cuts Reiner

Following the supposed breach of Wall Rose, Mikasa, Eren and the other members of the Survey Corps come to rescue Reiner and the others from the other Titans. She is among the others who learn of Krista’s real name being Historia.[101] After they reach the top of the Wall, Mikasa is outraged when she overhears Reiner confessing that he and Bertolt were the Titans responsible for the attack on Wall Maria and wanted Eren to join them. She takes them by surprise, attacking them with her swords and tells Eren to run. However, she fails to kill them as Reiner stops her from doing so, transforming afterward and attempting to kidnap Eren.[102] While Eren transforms, and engages in battle with Reiner, Mikasa faces her own troubles and regrets for not cutting off both his and Bertolt’s heads when she had the chance.[103] During the fight with Reiner, she sees Eren in trouble and tries to fight him off. However due to the thickness of the armor, Mikasa has a hard time slicing the nape of Reiner’s neck.[104] Eventually, Armin sees a weak link in Reiner’s line of defense in which his armor is breaking and gives Mikasa extra blades to replace her own. Taking advantage of the information, she cuts him at the back of the knee caps. However, Bertolt manages to save Reiner thanks to his abilities of the Colossus Titan, knocking out most of the soldiers in the process.[105]

Later, Mikasa along with Hange and others from the Survey Corps are injured from the heat blast from Bertolt’s Titan form. While Armin helps them recover, he gives Mikasa the news that she was dreading to hear: Eren along with Ymir was kidnapped by both Reiner and Bertolt.[106] Taking the scarf that he gave her, Mikasa covers her face with it and asks why Eren always runs off on them like that. She feels like she has failed in keeping her promise to Eren’s mother to always protect him and weeps.[107] As Armin tries to console her, Hannes arrives to give out rations to the Legion. It was him who reminds her that despite him running off the way he does and often losing fights, he never gives up on them. Even though the odds are stacked against him and he is unwilling to admit it, Hannes always knew that Eren relied on both Mikasa and Armin when he needed them. His words and his assistance reinvigorated them and are more determined to rescue Eren. Mikasa lowers her scarf and begins eating.[108]

She joins the joint military operation to rescue Eren and heads to the forest of giant trees where they hope to find Reiner, Bertolt, and their captives. Once they arrive she joins Hannes and a number of her fellow soldiers in searching the inside of the forest where they encounter Ymir in her Titan form. Ymir kidnaps Historia and flees while Mikasa and the others chase after her. At the forest’s edge, Reiner transforms into the Armored Titan. Ymir jumps on his back and Bertolt, carrying an unconscious Eren, rides on his shoulder.[109]

Mikasa strikes Ymir

The soldiers follow the group on horseback and try to free Eren from Bertholdt, but Ymir interferes with their attempts. Realizing that armor was protecting Reiner’s joints this time, she instead targets Ymir and slashes into her face.[110] Historia jumps in the way, saying that Ymir does not have a choice but to help Reiner and Bertolt. Fearing that Ymir will be killed, Historia convinces her to back down, leaving the rest of the 104th free to try talking Bertolt into letting Eren go, though Mikasa is considerably less forgiving than the others.[111] Jean and Connie try to speak to Bertolt and coax him into surrendering, but Mikasa coldly states that their reasons do not matter.[112] She is momentarily stayed by Bertolt’s apologies for what he and Reiner have done,[113] but when she requests again that Eren be returned, Bertolt refuses. Before the group can argue further, Hannes shouts a warning to them that a huge group of Titans is being led straight towards them by Erwin Smith.[114]

Mikasa retreats, but it is not long before Erwin orders them to attack one more time, claiming this to be the key moment for humanity’s survival.[115] Mikasa makes a dash to reach Eren and launches herself at Bertolt, but she misses and sees Eren watching her in panic. Her trajectory carries her straight into another Titan that grabs her hard enough to crush her ribs. Jean, who had been riding just behind her, attacks the Titan, burying his blade in its eye and allowing Mikasa to get free. However, he gets grabbed by a Titan and in spite of their initial shock, the soldiers, along with Mikasa, follow Erwin’s orders and continue advancing.[116]

With Armin’s help, Erwin is able to cut Eren free from Bertolt and Mikasa catches him in the air. The two of them flee on horseback but are knocked to the ground when Reiner begins throwing Titans at the retreating soldiers. As they look up, they see the smiling Titan which ate Eren’s mother approaching them. Mikasa is unable to defend Eren due to her injury, but Hannes buys them time in an attempt to avenge Carla. Eren shouts for Mikasa to free his arms so he can help fight, but when he tries biting himself to transform nothing happens.[117]

As Hannes is killed and the battle turns against the soldiers around them, Eren falls into despair, feeling that he has never had the power to do anything. Mikasa asks him to listen to her. He showed her how to live with purpose and he wrapped his scarf around her, and for that she is grateful. She smiles, with tears in her eyes, and Eren vows to wrap that scarf around her as many times as she wants.[118] He punches the smiling Titan, triggering something that causes all the other mindless Titans to attack it. In the resulting confusion, he carries Mikasa away on his back and also sends the Titans after Reiner and Bertolt. They escape with the rest of the surviving soldiers and return to Trost District.[119]

Royal Government arc

An injured Mikasa forgives Eren as he apologizes to her

Mikasa and the rest of the joint military operation participants arrive back at Wall Rose. Eren apologizes to Mikasa while she lies injured on a stretcher. She is among the wounded carried away on carts.[120] However, she does not stay down long. A short time later, she has recovered enough that she feels well enough to cut firewood while she hides out in a remote cabin along with Jean, Connie, Sasha, Armin, Historia, and Eren; the new members of Levi’s Special Operations Squad.[121]

She is present when Levi holds a meeting at the cabin with his squad and Hange’s. They discuss recapturing Wall Maria, assuming that Eren can harden his Titan form to plug the hole.[122] There are complications, however, with the death of Minister Nick at the hands of the Interior Military Police.[123]

Mikasa and the rest of Levi’s squad observe Hange’s experiments with Eren. They do not go smoothly though, and Mikasa has to resort to using her blades to cut Eren out of his Titan after his third attempt results in Eren only partially transforming and becoming unresponsive.[124] Eren remains unconscious for a full day before waking. Hange jokes about being relieved so they will not be sliced to shreds by Mikasa. Levi gripes over their lackluster results since Eren cannot harden himself, and without that ability they cannot reclaim Wall Maria. Mikasa defends Eren’s efforts, but Levi assures her he does not blame Eren. He just needs to vent.[125]

At night, they receive orders from Erwin and Levi asks those members of his squad «dumb enough» to trust the Commander to come with him. They manage to escape before intruders reach their cabin and hurry to their rendezvous point in Trost District. There, a carriage comes crashing through and seemingly kidnaps Eren and Historia.[126] However, the kidnapped victims are actually Jean and Armin in disguise. Mikasa joins Levi and the rest of their squad in tracking the robbers to their hideout.[127]

Mikasa and Levi attack Dimo Reeves and his men, saving Jean and Armin

They attack the kidnappers before Jean and Armin’s disguises can be discovered, with Mikasa herself tackling the ringleader, who turns out to be Dimo Reeves, the merchant boss who was blocking the gate with his cargo the day Trost was invaded. Levi takes him for a talk on top of Wall Rose.[128]

After hearing his story about being coerced by the Interior Military Police, Levi agrees to hand over Eren and Historia, to Mikasa’s consternation. However, Levi has multiple conditions that will require the full cooperation of the Reeves Company. Dimo agrees and baits Djel Sannes and Ralph of the Interior First Squad into a trap so that they can be captured by the Survey Corps.[129]

Mikasa and the rest of Levi’s squad, minus the Captain, listen to Djel Sannes’ screams as he is tortured in the basement of their current hideout. She does not comment as the rest of the squad laments or endorse the actions they have taken up until this point, including beginning a coup against the government. Armin says they are not good people anymore.[130]

Mikasa explains that following Levi is their best bet for survival

The next morning, Levi holds a meeting with his squad along with Dimo and his son Flegel Reeves to discuss the information Nifa has brought from Erwin. Levi reveals that Historia is to take the throne as part of the coup since the Reiss family is the true royal family, surprising nearly everyone else present. Once he pressures Historia into agreement, Nifa begins to detail the operation where they will hand Eren and Historia over to the First Interior Squad and then track them to Rod Reiss, the true ruler within the Walls.[131]

The kidnapping plan goes awry when Dimo Reeves and his employees are killed.[132] Two days later, the murders are pinned on the Survey Corps and Mikasa and the rest of Levi’s squad, sans the Captain himself, are in a stable on standby in Stohess District. The squad is uneasy about the coup and Levi’s treatment of Historia, but Mikasa thinks that their best option at the moment is to trust him.[133]

Mikasa lunges toward Jean in an attempt to save him from his attacker

As planned, Levi’s squad begins trailing the hearse carrying the two coffins that contain Eren and Historia. They hear gunshots, revealing that Levi has been discovered, and shortly after they see him swing into view. His pursuers are outfitted with specialized vertical maneuvering equipment designed to allow the firing of guns. Levi lands in the wagon and orders his squad to stop following the hearse because it is a trap. Their best option now is to escape and he has Mikasa assist him. The two of them use their maneuvering gear to fight back against their pursuers, but one slips through and Mikasa kicks her down before she can shoot Armin. However, Jean is unable to finish her off and she retaliates before Mikasa can get close enough to stop her.[134]

Armin reacts first to save Jean’s life, by killing his attacker.[135] When they escape to a cabin safely in the woods, Armin throws up outside, causing Mikasa to worry over him. He asks if this happened to her as well the first time she killed, and she is surprised by the question.[136]

Mikasa and Levi capture Marlowe and Hitch while they give their guns to Armin

When Marlowe Freudenberg and Hitch Dreyse come into the forest to look for Survey Corps soldiers, Mikasa and Levi ambush them while Armin distracts them as bait. Mikasa and Armin take their uniforms and put them on with the intention of infiltrating the Military Police to find out where Eren and Historia have been taken. They are to return to Stohess District in disguise to gather clues and capture anyone they think might be an Interior MP.[137]

However, Marlowe and Hitch do not take their capture quietly. Hitch berates Levi and Marlowe offers to help their cause. Jean asks if he can handle them and Levi allows him to secretly test their intentions. When they pass, the squad uses their help to launch an attack on an Interior Military Police compound.[138]

Mikasa is shocked upon hearing Kenny Ackerman’s last name

After crippling most of the people inside, Levi and his squad escape with a hostage, but they do not find Eren and Historia. Levi brutally interrogates him about their location until the name «Kenny Ackerman» comes out. Mikasa is surprised upon hearing this last name and Levi reacts as well. Before they can question their hostage further, they hear people approaching on foot and their hostage remarks that they have no chance. The Survey Corps is finished.[139]

The newcomers turn out to be Hange, Marlowe, and Hitch, arriving with the news that the false charges against the Survey Corps have been dropped and the capitol is now under the control of Commander-In-Chief Darius Zackly due to a coup d’état. Levi’s squad celebrates the news. They still have to rescue Eren and Historia though, and Hange has an idea regarding where they are.[140]

Hange suspects that Eren is going to be eaten in order to obtain his Titan power. Erwin had a report commissioned on the Reiss estate, and assuming that Eren and Historia were captured by the Reiss family, that is likely where they are being held. The day Wall Maria fell a group of bandits burned down the village chapel while the Reiss family was inside, but fire alone should not have destroyed a stone building. After escaping as the lone survivor, Rod Reiss rebuilt the place with his own assets. Hange finds it suspicious, so they head over there.[141]

Mikasa discusses Kenny with Levi, the name Ackerman, and the power that comes to those with that name

On the way, Levi warns his squad that Kenny Ackerman will be their biggest obstacle, because fighting him will be like fighting Levi himself. He asks Mikasa if she thinks Kenny might be related to her since they share the same last name. She thinks about it and tells him that she knows that her father’s family was persecuted, but not the reason why. Levi then asks her whether she experienced a moment when she felt a sudden power awaken inside her and she remembers the moment she took up the knife to kill her kidnapper. She reveals that she did, and upon confirming this, Levi tells her that he and Kenny also experienced such moments in their lives.[142]

Mikasa and Levi charge forward under cover of smoke to destroy the First Interior Squad and save Eren

They arrive at the chapel and find the secret door leading underground. The team makes preparations for facing the Anti-Personnel Control Squad, which is waiting for them below.[143] When they are ready, they send barrels of gunpowder and bags of oil down the stairs. Sasha sets fire to them with a flaming arrow and fills the underground chamber with smoke, reducing visibility and the usefulness of firearms. Most of the squad provides additional cover with signal flares while Mikasa and Levi scout out their enemies using vertical maneuvering gear. Levi calls for his squad to take out the Interior MPs and the team springs into action. After a concerted push, they manage to force the Anti-Personnel Control Squad into a retreat.[144]

Mikasa and the rest of Levi’s squad arrive just in time to save Eren and Historia from a transformed Rod

Mikasa and the rest of Levi’s squad are suddenly stopped by a bright flash deeper in the cavern. She realizes that it means a Titan has transformed and worries over Eren.[145] The squad arrives in time for Mikasa to catch Historia, who had been flung back against the Wall from the force of Rod Reiss’ transformation into a Titan. Mikasa asks if she is okay before taking the keys to Eren’s chains from her and throwing them to Levi so he can free him. The ceiling begins caving in, trapping the squad. Eren apologizes for being useless, but Levi and Historia goad him into taking matters into his own hands. He gets up and grabs a bottle labeled «Armor» that had fallen out of Rod’s bag and breaks it between his teeth as he transforms into a Titan.[146]

Eren’s Titan form then crystallizes, stabilizing the cavern around the squad, preventing them from being crushed. Even after Mikasa helps cut him out of it, his hardened form does not disappear, which Levi states is a huge development, as they can now seal the hole in Wall Maria.[147]

Mikasa stops Eren from punching himself

Mikasa joins the rest of her squad in meeting up with Erwin and pulling back to Orvud District where they make preparations to fight the gargantuan Titan that used to be Rod Reiss.[148] At dawn, the Titan arrives and Eren, Mikasa, and Armin assemble a stack of barrels filled with gunpowder at Hange’s direction. Mikasa finds Eren moping and prods him back to work. However, to her surprise, he punches his own face to bring himself back to his senses.[149]

When Rod reaches the Wall, Levi instructs the Garrison soldiers to flee while the Survey Corps soldiers douse themselves in water to withstand the heat. Eren changes into his Titan and uses the stacked barrels as an explosive by shoving them down Rod’s open mouth. Mikasa joins the rest of the Survey Corps in cutting down the pieces of Titan that rain down to ensure that the main body of Rod Reiss is slain.[150]

After Historia’s coronation, Mikasa is seen with her friends looking for Levi in order for Historia to live up to the last words that Dimo Reeves spoke to her. When they find him, Historia punches him in the arm and all of Squad Levi shouts and cheers. However, Levi smiles at his squad and thanks them in response, much to everyone’s surprise.[151]

Mikasa interrupts Eren and Historia

Two months later, Historia can be seen running an orphanage and taking care of abandoned children. Eren, Jean, and Armin talk about Historia’s new role and the country’s situation while Sasha, Connie, and Mikasa help carry supplies. When Historia finds them, she tells them to stop slacking. While Armin and Jean go on ahead, she has a small conversation with Eren, but they are interrupted by a stone-faced Mikasa, who takes the items Eren was carrying, saying he is tired from all his training. Eren complains that she should not treat him like an old man.[152]

While the soldiers eat and celebrate the success of the Executioner from Hell fashioned by Hange, Mikasa remains silent throughout most of the conversation until Eren begins to remember the day he ate his father. Recognizing where his mind is going, Mikasa stops him, saying that he should finish eating before talking. He does not stop trying to remember though, and suddenly he realizes that the man that his father met the day Wall Maria fell was their old instructor, Keith Shadis. They then decide to pay him a visit.[153]

Return to Shiganshina arc

Mikasa and the others speak with Keith

The following day, Eren, Mikasa, Armin and others travel to the training camp to talk with Keith Shadis.[154] They talk inside a small house and Keith tells them everything he knows: how he met Grisha Yeager 20 years ago outside the Walls, his relation with him and Eren’s mother during those years, and how he was present in the night Grisha injected Eren with the Titan serum, but did not see anything, and at the end, does not know anything about Grisha’s secrets.[155]

Mikasa rides towards Shiganshina

Some days later, thanks to Eren’s training and new technology developed by Hange, the operation to take back Wall Maria is ready to begin the next day.[156] That night, the soldiers have a great dinner to celebrate.[157] Mikasa is present, eating and watching Sasha’s rampage and Jean and Eren’s fight.[158][159] Even when Jean blames Eren for the dangers that he puts in Mikasa, she calmly decides not to intervene.[160]

When the fight ends, she sits with Eren and Armin talking about their future, what will happen once they reconquest Wall Maria, and wondering if everything will be like before.[161] However Armin not only thinks in that: he considers that being part of the Survey Corps will allow them to see the ocean and the whole world.[162]

The following day, the Survey Corps are ready to go to Shiganshina District. After hearing the cheers of the citizens, Erwin starts the operation at sundown and Mikasa rides along the Squad Levi towards Shiganshina.[163]

As dawn approaches, the Corps walk within a mountaintop forest. Mikasa leads Eren’s horse, despite his complaints, as the others encourage him to rest as much as possible for his upcoming duties. Jean spots a nearby Titan and Hange quickly orders the group to illuminate the area with their fragments of the Reiss Chapel cave. Hange claims that it is dozing away and the group moves on. A few moments after this, Mikasa begins to recognize the area they are in and claims that she collected firewood there once before. Eren and Armin also begin to recognize the area and Mikasa notes that she can hear the river stream. The group then finds themselves near the Shiganshina District and race in on horses. Erwin orders that all soldiers switch to vertical maneuvering equipment and rush the main gate, covered by their hoods to distract any watching enemies. Mikasa is among the soldiers surrounding the gate as Eren flies up above to transform.[164]

After Eren successfully seals the hole in Wall Maria, Mikasa retrieves him from his Titan form, and returns him to the top of the Wall. Giving Eren her cloak, Mikasa accompanies the rest of her squad as they return to meet up with Erwin and the rest of the Survey Corps.[165] However, before they can return, they see a signal flare fired by Erwin and stop to await further orders. From her position, Mikasa and her comrades are able to observe as Reiner reveals himself to be hiding inside the Wall, and the Beast Titan and his army materialize to engage the Survey Corps.[166]

After taking up positions around the brawling Eren and Reiner, Mikasa waits until Eren is able to maneuver Reiner into an area of town with tall buildings. Once Eren has succeeded in this task, Mikasa and Hange use their new Thunder Spears to blind him. After her teammates destroy the armor covering Reiner’s nape, the entire squad moves in and destroys Reiner’s nape with their Thunder Spears.[167] Afterward, Mikasa attempts to console a horrified Armin, but is interrupted by Reiner’s Titan form, which begins roaring.[168]

Mikasa attempts to kill Bertolt

After Armin reveals to Hange that Bertolt is approaching, Mikasa and the rest of the soldiers retreat from Reiner’s immediate vicinity, in order to escape being caught in the blast of Bertolt’s transformation to Titan form. When Bertolt chooses not to transform in order to check on Reiner, Armin attempts to negotiate with him. However, while Armin is attempting to talk with Bertolt, Mikasa takes the opportunity to attack Bertolt from behind. She is unsuccessful in killing him, and comments on his drastic change in personality as he flees.[169]

While Mikasa and Armin are returning to their comrades’ position, Bertolt finally transforms, and they are forced to hide behind a building to shield themselves from the blast. They then regroup with the rest of Squad Levi and inform them that Hange’s squad has apparently been destroyed by the blast.[170] As Bertolt begins destroying Shiganshina, Mikasa observes that he does not seem to know their location. Pointing out that they will not have time to look for any survivors from Hange’s squad, Mikasa suggests that Armin take the lead of their squad, though Armin then gives Jean command.[171]

After retreating from Bertolt, Eren tries to get Bertolt’s attention, but he ignores them. Deciding that they will have to engage Bertolt directly, Mikasa takes Connie’s Thunder Spear and prepares to engage Bertolt. While Eren attacks Bertolt directly, Mikasa and the rest of the squad spread out to try to find an opening to attack Bertolt. However, before they can act, Bertolt kicks Eren into the side of Wall Maria, to Mikasa’s horror.[172]

Jean assures her that Eren is not dead, and that their main concern at the moment is taking down Bertolt. Jean formulates a plan for he, Connie and Sasha to draw Bertolt’s attention while Mikasa strikes his nape with the Thunder Spears. Just as Mikasa moves in to strike Bertolt, he uses his steam to prevent her from reaching him. When Mikasa lands on a roof where the others already are, she is visibly injured. She explains that a piece of the Thunder Spears hit her, but the wound is not deep. She asks Armin if he believes there is any possible way for them to fight back, but he sees none. They are startled by the sound of a house exploding behind them. From it emerges Reiner, his head fully regenerated.[173] While Armin and Eren choose to confront the Colossus Titan, Mikasa agrees to join the others in an attack against the Armored Titan.[174]

Mikasa defeats the Armored Titan

As Reiner begins to run to Eren, Mikasa sends one of her Thunder Spears into his knees, crippling him. She notices the Colossus Titan in the distance beginning to emit much steam, causing her to worry about Eren and Armin for a moment before she returns her focus to the attack on Reiner. While the others proceed with a plan they devised to defeat Reiner, Sasha is injured and misses her Thunder Spear attack on the hinge of the Armored Titan’s jaw. Mikasa realizes that since she has the only Thunder Spear left and Reiner’s jaw has not been completely unhinged, she cannot proceed with the plan to blow Reiner’s body out of his nape by sending a Thunder Spear into his mouth. As she considers the situation, Hange returns to the battle, sending their own Thunder Spear at Reiner and destroying his other jaw hinge. With the plan now on the verge of success, Mikasa jumps into Reiner’s mouth, ordering him to get out as she sends her final Thunder Spear into his mouth, defeating the Armored Titan.[175]

While Hange interrogates an injured Reiner, Mikasa begins treating Jean’s injuries. Although Hange wants to execute Reiner, Jean convinces them to keep him alive long enough to steal his powers with the Titan injection. Hange orders Mikasa to go retrieve the serum from Levi, and to send up a signal flare if there is a change of plans, so that Hange will know to kill Reiner.[176] When Mikasa arrives at Levi’s position, she is horrified to find a hysterical Eren trying to keep a badly-injured Armin alive. As Levi agrees to use the Titan serum to save Armin’s life, Mikasa shoots a flare to notify Hange that Reiner must be killed.[177] However, Levi’s mind is swayed by the arrival of another soldier, who reveals that Erwin is also mortally wounded. Horrified by Levi’s announcement that he will save Erwin and not Armin, Mikasa draws her blade and begins to advance upon him.[178]

Mikasa attacks Levi

As Levi punches Eren in the face, Mikasa pins him to the rooftop and draws her blade to his neck. Noticing how worn out Levi is, she attempts to grab the Titan serum from his hand, as Levi reminds her that without Erwin’s strength, humanity can never defeat the Titans. When Floch approaches her, she flips her blade in order to strike him with the blunt side of the sword and knock him down, only to be stopped by Hange Zoë.[179] As they both struggle, Mikasa eventually capitulates, remembering a happier time when she, Eren and Armin were children, as tears roll down her face. After Armin returns to his human form, Mikasa, along with Eren, pick him up off the ground as she cries tears of joy to see he is alive and well.[180]

Atop the Wall, after Eren informs Armin of what has happened after the battle ended, Hange orders Mikasa, Levi and Eren to continue surveying and head for the Yeager family’s house.[181] Upon reaching the basement’s door, Eren tries to open the door’s lock and is surprised that the key does not fit. Mikasa says that she is sure that was the key Doctor Yeager had. Levi then proceeds and kicks down the door and they enter room.[182] They find it had been set up to appear as much as possible, a common doctor’s office, however, after further investigation, Mikasa discovers a keyhole on a locked drawer in the desk, which the key unlocks. The drawer seemed empty at first, but Levi notices the false bottom and under it, were three hidden books kept intact with various preservatives. Mikasa and Eren open the first book,[183] and within it they find an uncannily realistic portrait of Grisha standing beside a fair-haired woman and a child. On the back of it, Grisha had written that it is not an illustration, it is called a photograph and that humanity has not perished.[184]

Mikasa refuses to accept the thirteen-year rule

Upon returning to the Walls, Eren and Mikasa are put in prison cells as punishment for their actions against Levi. During this time, Armin visits them and logs Eren’s memories as he retells them of many events in his father Grisha’s life that matched up with what was found in the books in his basement. Among these memories is a conversation between him and Eren Kruger, an allied spy to the Eldian Restorationists. During this conversation, Kruger tells Grisha that anyone who has inherited the power of the Titans will only live for 13 more years, as no one with this power can outlive its original owner Ymir Fritz who founded the nation of Eldia and all its subjects. Upon hearing this revelation, Mikasa becomes very depressed and denies its validity, knowing that Armin and Eren only have a short number of years left to live if it is true.[185] After Hange, the current commander, puts too much pressure on Eren in the next prison cell, Levi ordered them free. Mikasa leaves her cell, having lost weight in her state of depression.[186]

Mikasa attends a military meeting, on how to proceed with the findings of the basement, in Trost. She sits silently as Hange deliberates their interpretation of the events, but is shocked and confused when Eren shouts all of a sudden during the meeting.[187] Mikasa then continues being quiet, until the conclusion of the meeting, with the decision made to release all discoveries made by the Survey Corps to the public.[188]

The nine surviving members of the Survey Corps later attend a ceremony, to be honored for their success in the Battle of Shiganshina District. Before the start of the ceremony, Eren gets into an argument with Floch over Armin being saved over Commander Erwin. When she attempts to calm Eren down, Floch commends Mikasa over her acting like an adult and giving up in saving Armin. This statement surprises and upsets her.[189] She would later go on to be commemorated for her bravery in Shiganshina with a medal.

Mikasa experiences the ocean with Armin

Roughly a year after the Battle of Trost District, the Titan Guillotines had eradicated all Titans within Wall Maria, allowing citizens to repopulate Shiganshina. The Survey Corps was able to hold an expedition beyond the Walls for the first time in six years. Mikasa ventures out on horseback, beyond the Walls for the first time. After following a deformed Titans trail, the Survey Corps reach the edge of Paradis Island, and behold the ocean.[190]

The Survey Corps dismount their horses, discard their boots, and head to the beachfront. Mikasa is startled by an ocean wave, but goes on to give Armin a warm smile. She listens, as Armin begins to joyfully talk with Eren over the size of the ocean. However, these happy moments fade as Eren solemnly states that the ocean does not hold freedom, and enemies are over the other side.[191]

Marley arc

Mikasa shows the tattoo on her wrist to the Hizuru ambassadors

One year after retaking Shiganshina, Mikasa goes with the other members of the Survey Corps to intercept a survey ship sent from Marley. Like the others present, Mikasa is surprised to see two sailors rebel and force the others to surrender. While watching the two meet with Levi and Hange, Mikasa ponders what their plan might be while trying to wake up Sasha.[192]

An alliance is formed between Paradis and the group of rebels, calling themselves the Anti-Marleyan Volunteers, and preparations and training begin for the impending war with Marley. While at a firing range, Mikasa and Armin both agree that it is good to see both sides are getting along with each other, but are visibly troubled by Eren’s insistence that Paradis must launch a preemptive assault on Marley to buy themselves more time to prepare.[193]

Later on, Mikasa is among the Survey Corps members that meet with an ambassador from the nation of Hizuru named Kiyomi Azumabito. Mikasa is left dumbfounded when Yelena calls her attention to the fact that Kiyomi’s physical features strongly resemble her late mother’s, explaining that the similarities are due to the fact that Kiyomi’s family are relatives of her mother’s.

At a meeting between the two parties, Kiyomi displays the crest of the Azumabito clan and Mikasa is shaken to see it is the same as the tattoo on her wrist. After some prompting by Eren, Mikasa shares it, saying that her mother gave it to her as a girl and to pass it down to her children later on. Kiyomi describes how both Hizuru and Eldia were allies long ago and laments that the nation suffered after the Great Titan War. Kiyomi finishes by stating that Mikasa is the descendant of Hizuru’s lost lord and the hope for their nation. Although Mikasa is overwhelmed by this information, Historia is ecstatic, believing that Hizuru will be more willing to trust Paradis due to Mikasa’s lineage.[194]

Later, after spending the day building train tracks, Eren mentions that he only has roughly five years left to live and begins to consider who he should pass his Titan abilities to. Mikasa immediately volunteers herself but Jean advises against it; Mikasa is half-Asian, and they do not know what the Ackerman clan is (if they are Subjects of Ymir or not), so she might not even be capable of becoming a Titan at all. As the others volunteer themselves also, Eren decides to not choose any of them due to valuing their friendship and not wanting to have any of their lives forcibly cut short on his behalf.[195]

Mikasa is one of several Survey Corpsmen who journey to Marley’s mainland to meet with Kiyomi. When Eren leaves in the middle of the meeting, Mikasa and the rest of the 104th graduates go searching for him.[196]

Eren asks Mikasa about what he means to her

Mikasa finds him looking at a cluster of refugee tents. At first, she begins to reprimand him for going outside alone when he is their enemies’ most wanted target, but then she realizes that he is looking at the boy who stole from Sasha and Levi earlier in the day, as well as the boy’s family. Eren tells her that these tents are where these people live after losing their homes to war. The people here are like the two of them. One day life stopped being normal and everything was taken away. He asks Mikasa why she cares about him so much, whether it is because he saved her when they were kids, or because they are family. Mikasa stammers at first but then replies that he is family. The rest of their friends arrive and interrupt their conversation, disappointing Eren. The group end up having dinner with the family living near the Azumabito estate, spending the night drinking and carousing.[197]

The soldiers sit in on a hearing between politicians to discuss Eldian mistreatment. They are horrified when the speakers begin calling for the hatred being shown towards Eldians to be redirected towards the Eldians living on Paradis. As they are listening, Mikasa notices Eren quietly depart from the meeting.[198]

Mikasa flips over the War Hammer Titan, detonating her Thunder Spears

As Eren begins his assault on the Marleyans, Mikasa joins the Survey Corps in retrieving him and attacking Liberio. During the battle between Eren and the War Hammer Titan, Mikasa attacks the War Hammer from behind, using a modified mount with multiple Thunder Spears. She launches all eight at the War Hammer’s nape, seven of which land solidly in the neck, where they explode. Mikasa lands on the shoulder of the decapitated Attack Titan and asks Eren to come home.[199]

She later questions him if he has an idea of what he has done, as he has killed civilians, including children, and there is no way to undo that. However, Eren does not answer the question and instead points out that the War Hammer Titan is still alive. Mikasa is shocked to see the Titan standing up, since she is sure that she destroyed its nape completely, and the War Hammer Titan then fires a pike of its hardened substance towards them. Mikasa quickly grabs Eren and flees away of the Attack Titan’s body, barely avoiding getting struck. Eren comes up with a plan to defeat and eat the War Hammer Titan, and asks Mikasa to distract the enemy enough for him to enact it.[200] Mikasa re-engages the War Hammer Titan while Eren transforms back into the Attack Titan and captures Lara Tybur, who was hiding under the ground encased in crystal and controlling the War Hammer remotely via a long cord. Mikasa watches as Eren severs the connection and prepares to eat Lara, but then is horrified to see Galliard attacking him from behind, and she and Levi go to aid him.[201]

Mikasa launches a Thunder Spear at the Jaw Titan

After Levi and Eren manage to hold off Galliard, Mikasa intercepts him and knocks him down off the wall with a Thunder Spear. Other Survey Corps soldiers come to fight the Titan but they are shot by the Panzer Unit on top Pieck’s Cart Titan, although Mikasa is among the ones who manage to escape. She then sees Eren being caught off guard by the reappearance of the War Hammer Titan and then Zeke Yeager’s Beast Titan arriving to the battle. As Zeke joins Galliard and Pieck and orders them not to let anyone escape and wipe them all out, Levi orders the Corps to face their enemies and to survive.[202]

Mikasa prepares to re-engage the Jaw Titan

While the Survey Corps and Warriors clash, Mikasa attempts to destroy the War Hammer’s crystal with a Thunder Spear, but it fails to even crack. Staying close to Eren, she watches as he then unsuccessfully tries to consume the crystal.[203] She witnesses an explosion at the nearby harbor, signaling the arrival of Armin and the Colossus Titan. When the Jaw Titan attempts to charge Eren, Mikasa intervenes. Having worn an updated set of the traditional vertical maneuvering gear alongside the anti-personnel variant, she draws her blades and prepares to fight it once more.[204]

Mikasa slices at the legs of the Jaw Titan, crippling it

Mikasa swings her swords at the Jaw Titan but it lunges out of the way and goes for the Attack Titan. She follows it and tries to provide support and as it momentarily breaks off from the attack, Mikasa notes that this current Jaw Titan is much faster and different from Ymir’s Titan.[205] It then switches its focus from Eren to an incoming airship that serves as the Survey Corps method of retreat from the battle. Mikasa anticipated the Jaw Titan going after it and manages to catch it off guard; she comes from underneath it and throws it off balance by slicing through both legs and severs one of its feet. Mikasa observes Eren using the Jaw Titan to kill and consume the powers of the War Hammer Titan. After Eren gets caught by surprise from Reiner’s Armored Titan, Mikasa flies to Eren and convinces him to come back home. She then leaves with Eren and flies toward the incoming airship.[206]

After they board the airship, Levi kicks Eren due to his insubordination, infuriating Mikasa; she tries to protest, but is stopped by Armin.[207] The four meet with Zeke and Yelena at another part of the ship. A commotion ensues outside and Connie and Jean enter the room, carrying two captured stowaways. Jean announces that one of them shot Sasha and she is unlikely to survive, prompting Mikasa and Armin to run out of the room to see her.[208] Sasha dies from her injuries, with Mikasa and Armin futilely trying to wake her.[209]

After the Survey Corps return to Paradis Island, Mikasa attends the funeral service held for the eight soldiers lost during the battle in Liberio. Afterward, she remains by Sasha’s grave to continue mourning.[210]

War for Paradis arc

As Mikasa is visiting Sasha’s grave, she is interrupted by the sound of Connie and Jean saving Niccolo from being harassed by a Military Police Brigade soldier. As Niccolo pays his respects to Sasha, Mikasa informs him of how she died.[211] Later that night, Mikasa is with Armin, Connie and Jean, with the latter expressing dismay that the Anti-Marleyan Volunteers were arrested.

Mikasa opposes killing Eren

When Connie mentions they should be prepared to kill Eren if he sides with their enemy, Mikasa opposes him but he glares at her and asks if she would side with the enemy too. Mikasa says no, but claims that Eren still cares for them and tries to convince them his recent behavior is reflective of that.[212] The others do not believe her and Jean brings up the fact that despite this, Eren still had no problem forcing them to fight and that resulted in Sasha’s death. Mikasa is further shocked when Connie stated that Eren laughed when told that Sasha had died. Armin decides they should prepare for a worst-case scenario to have someone turn and kill Eren if he proves to be a threat; Mikasa protests that he still has several years left, but Armin states they will decide what happens after confirming where Eren stands.[213]

After a group of Survey Corps recruits leak the news of Eren’s arrest to the public and are found out, Mikasa attends the hearing that Hange conducts with them. After hearing them out, Hange orders the perpetrators jailed for their actions, and Mikasa escorts one of them, Louise, to her cell. Louise tries to justify Eren’s actions and convince Mikasa to help free him, but Mikasa simply cuts her off and leaves.[214] She meets up with Armin and notifies him that Darius Zackly has agreed to see them. Both of them are stunned to hear Zackly refuse their request to see Eren and Mikasa is taken aback by the possibility that Zeke Yeager has been controlling Eren’s behavior and movements prior to the attack on Liberio.[215] After being sent away, Mikasa notices several Military Police soldiers enter Zackly’s office and decides to eavesdrop;[216] Armin tries to persuade her not to, but she insists on knowing what direction the Survey Corps is going. Suddenly, she grabs Armin and dives away just as an explosion goes off in Zackly’s office. They both go outside and see Zackly’s dismembered corpse from the blast; Mikasa is speechless about who could have been behind the assassination as the crowd of protesters chant in approval.[217]

Mikasa is informed of Eren’s escape

During an emergency meeting by the other heads of the Military, Mikasa hears Armin testify that he observed several recruits from the Survey Corps leave the area and were most likely responsible for the explosion. She is shocked to hear Eren has escaped confinement and blocked his escape route so no one could follow him.[218] Mikasa accompanies Armin, Hange and Onyankopon as the military conduct a search for the renegades, staring blankly ahead and unresponsive to Armin as he tries to calm her.[219]

Later, Mikasa attends another meeting to plan the military’s response to the emergence of the rebels, now dubbed the «Yeagerists.» As the meeting concludes, Kiyomi pulls Mikasa aside to ask her to consider fleeing to the Azumabito’s ship if the need arises. Mikasa thanks her for her consideration, though makes clear that she sees herself as an Eldian foremost, and intends to see the fate of the island that raised her. Furthermore, after Kiyomi tells her of the Azumabito’s shaky political situation, Mikasa says that this is all the more situation to not rely on the family. Despite Mikasa’s words, Kiyomi states that no matter what happens with the island, the family will protect her. Heading outside with the other Survey Corps veterans, Mikasa briefly squabbles with Connie over Eren’s connection to the Yeagerists, and over being suspected. Believing Zeke to have a secret scheme, the corps ride out to a lead; a restaurant employing Marleyan workers.[220]

Mikasa protects Gabi

After arriving for their investigation and meeting up with Niccolo, Mikasa and the others wait in a backroom for him to finish his work. A short while later, Armin calls everybody into the main room, where Niccolo is attacking the run-away Warrior candidates over the murder of Sasha. Eventually, when Mr. Blouse’s understanding attitude calms the situation down, Mikasa goes over to the female candidate to check on her wounds. Suddenly, another young girl named Kaya attempts to stab the candidate, however Mikasa blocks the attack. Mikasa and Armin take her into the next room as the Blouse family weep.[221]

In a separate room, Mikasa sits with Gabi and Armin; when asked by Gabi why she saved her, Mikasa does not give any reason why when Eren unexpectedly appears. Before they can say anything, Eren silently holds up his right hand which is bleeding. Understanding Eren’s intent if they do not comply, Mikasa and Armin obey his request to sit down at the table.[222] As they hear Floch lead the others away, Mikasa can only sit in stunned silence while Eren and Armin begin to talk. When Eren mentions himself finally being free, Mikasa says that he is not and is being controlled by Zeke. She mentions how Eren was not like this ever before and brings up how he saved her from being kidnapped all those years ago, pointing to the scarf Eren gave her.[223] Eren glares at her and firmly reminds her to keep her hands on the table. Stunned by this reaction, Mikasa silently complies.

Eren tells Mikasa he has always hated her

After Eren calls Armin a useless traitor, Mikasa asks Eren what he is doing and hears that Eren learned about her family’s lineage from Zeke as well. She hears from Eren that the Ackerman clan can manifest the power of the Titans while remaining in human form and will activate in the presence of a person recognized as the king. He muses that her instincts as an Ackerman are the sole reason why Mikasa has stuck by him for so long. Bringing up the example of her attempted kidnapping, Eren reminds Mikasa that she only acted when he told her to.[224] Realizing this, Mikasa tries to explain it off but Eren remarks that Ackermans also suffer severe headaches due to their true selves fighting the urge to protect the host. Recalling that it happened to her, Eren flatly states the real Mikasa died that day in the hut and all that is left are her Ackerman instincts. Mikasa is unable to speak and starts to break down and cry when Eren claims he has always hated her, calling her nothing more than an obedient slave.[225]

When Armin tries to assault Eren, Mikasa swiftly blocks his attack and slams him into the table, much to both their shock and horror. As Eren starts beating Armin, Mikasa continues to cry and begs him to stop. Eren then orders her, Armin and Gabi taken away to Shiganshina District.[226] Afterwards, Mikasa is relocated to a prison cell alongside the other captives.[227] During her imprisonment, Jean inquires more about her recent encounter with Eren from Armin but Mikasa rebuffs the remarks not wanting to explain. They are then interrupted by Yelena who came to explain Zeke’s true intentions.[228] Afterwards, Mikasa remains idle as the others react to Yelena’s explanation of the euthanization plan.[229]

Mikasa leaves her scarf behind

As the fight on the rooftop ensues, Mikasa and the other prisoners wonder what the sound overhead them was about.[230] Onyankopon arrives shortly to release them, requesting that all imprisoned soldiers join the fight against Marley to keep Eren safe. As they head to put on sets of vertical maneuvering equipment, Mikasa and Armin discuss what Eren’s motivations might be for pushing them away. Although Armin is unsure of Eren’s intentions, he assures Mikasa that Eren was lying about her Ackerman genes, and simply used his knowledge of her headaches to give his lie credence.[231] As she is suiting up, Mikasa is visited by Louise, who tries to bond with her. Mikasa ignores the girl, and departs for the battle field; before leaving, she folds up the scarf given to her by Eren and leaves it behind.[27]

Along with the others, Mikasa notices Zeke getting shot and falling off the wall. As Armin decides they must neutralize the Cart Titan, both of them are shot at by several Marleyan soldiers hiding in a nearby house.[232] After Connie destroys it with a Thunder Spear, Mikasa goes with Armin to the Cart Titan while Commander Pixis and Nile Dok of the Military Police coordinate efforts on the ground. Suddenly, a loud scream is heard throughout the district; Mikasa sees several flashes of light and realize that Zeke has transformed the affected soldiers into Pure Titans.[233]

Mikasa kills two soldiers before facing the Cart Titan

Reaching the top of the wall where the Cart Titan is stationed, Mikasa saves Armin after he destroys the Titan artillery cannon atop its back. Cutting through the soldiers accompanying it, Mikasa then glares at Pieck. She is then charged by the Cart Titan and angles out of range while preparing to strike it.[234] Before they can engage, Eren and Zeke make contact, causing the Wall to collapse and abruptly ending Mikasa’s attack.[235]

Mikasa and Armin are horrified to see the Titans inside emerging. Looking at Eren’s new Titan form, Mikasa wonders if there was any other choice they could have made, or if she had answered differently when Eren had asked her what he meant to her, that could have avoided the battle they find themselves in now. As the Wall Titans begin to march, Armin assumes that Eren is using the Founding Titan to send the Wall Titans to attack the forces amassing in Marley to attack Paradis. However, he is perplexed to see that all of Wall Maria is crumbling, telling Mikasa that an attack on Marley should have only required the Titans contained in Shiganshina’s outer Wall. They are interrupted by Eren, who begins speaking to all Subjects of Ymir through the Founding Titan. To Mikasa’s shock, Eren declares that he is going to be using the Founding Titan to completely exterminate all life outside Paradis Island.[236]

Mikasa and Armin regroup with Jean and Connie, who have Falco with them. Noticing their fellow soldiers being attacked by Titans, Armin and Jean go to help them but Mikasa points out that they need to deal with Falco. Jean suggests feeding the boy to one of the Titans while Connie argues that his mother should be allowed to eat Falco. Armin does not want to sacrifice Falco at all, arguing that killing him will only breed more animosity with the Warriors. The group is attacked by a Titan, allowing Connie to flee with Falco before the group can stop him.[237]

Mikasa kills a Titan at headquarters

The group returns to the military headquarters where they rally the soldiers trapped inside to help them kill the Titans which have amassed around the building. After clearing out the first wave of Titans, Mikasa’s group lies in wait at the building while more soldiers lead the remaining Titans to the building to be killed, subsequently clearing all of them.[238]

When combat had ended, Mr. Blouse brings Mikasa and Armin to go meet with Gabi, who begs them to return Falco to her. Armin explains what has happened to Falco and Gabi desperately tries to argue that Eren can return Connie’s mother to normal with the Founding Titan in order to spare Falco. Gabi argues that he was capable of even removing the Armored Titan’s hardened skin, prompting Mikasa to ask Gabi about Reiner’s whereabouts.[239]

Armin is frustrated by Mikasa’s question concerning Eren

Mikasa tries to convince Armin not to pursue Connie to Ragako, but is unsuccessful. As Armin is leaving Mikasa tries to ask Armin what they will do about Eren, causing Armin to lash out at her for not focusing on more pressing issues that they have. He then tells her that Erwin would have had better judgment in that moment, and departs. As Armin leaves, Mikasa notices that her scarf is no longer where she left it.

Mikasa later finds Jean and Floch with a dead Volunteer and demands to know what happened. Floch claims to be acting on Eren’s behalf to wipe out any resentment Paradis might have. Floch attempts to recruit Jean but Mikasa interrupts him, demanding to know what happened to Hange and Levi. Floch claims, to her shock, that Zeke killed them.[240]

The next morning, Mikasa finds Louise in the infirmary wearing her missing scarf. Louise claims that Eren told her to throw the scarf away, so she decided to take it instead, prompting Mikasa to demand that she return it immediately.[241] Later, Mikasa and Jean are contacted by Hange, who informs the two of the plan to join forces with Marley to stop Eren. Mikasa agrees to it.[242] After receiving the signal from Jean to leave the military headquarters, Mikasa departs with her comrades.[243] On their way out of Shiganshina, they pick up and join forces with Annie and Reiner.[244]

Mikasa confronts Annie

That night, the combined forces of Marley and Paradis share a meal as they discuss how to oppose Eren.[245] As tensions run high between the Survey Corps and the Warriors, Annie demands to know if the Corps will be able to kill Eren if no other option is presented. Mikasa states that killing Eren is not the only way to stop him, confirming Annie’s suspicions that Mikasa and her friends would try to stop the Warriors from killing Eren. Mikasa steps up to confront Annie, but she defuses the situation by assuring Mikasa that she has no issue with Eren living if he can be convinced to stop the Rumbling.[246]

The next day the group travels to Paradis’ harbor with the intention of using the Azumabito clan’s airship to pursue Eren, only to find that the harbor has been occupied by Yeagerists.[247] As the group gears up for a confrontation Annie suggests launching an all-out attack and Mikasa reminds her that they cannot risk getting the Azumabito killed in the crossfire. The discussion is interrupted by Hange, who reveals to everyone’s horror that Eren and his Titans have apparently already reached Marley.

The group settles on a plan to try to trick Floch into handing over the Azumabito mechanics so that they can operate the ship. Floch instead tries to execute the Azumabito, necessitating Mikasa to intervene and save them. Mikasa helps Kiyomi disarm Floch and his guards, but Floch manages to escape and alert the other Yeagerists to their attack. Mikasa, Hange, Jean and Magath lead Kiyomi and the mechanics to the basement of the building they were being kept in and take shelter there so that Annie and Reiner can transform and fight without risk of collateral damage.[248]

Mikasa carries Annie as they flee the harbor

After it is decided that the flying boat will be taken to Odiha so that it can be prepped for flight under more favorable conditions, Mikasa brings news of the change to Annie and Reiner and instructs them to protect the Azumabito service crew. As Mikasa engages the Yeagerists, she is alerted by Hange about reinforcements arriving by train but is shocked to see the train derail itself. Once the boat is ready to depart, Mikasa helps carry an injured Annie onboard.[249]

On board the ship, Mikasa and Jean are seen holding back Annie, who is in distress, after Hange reveals that Liberio cannot be saved from the Rumbling anymore.[250]

Upon arriving in Odiha, Mikasa helps out with the preparations for the flying boat to take off. While working, Mikasa suggests that Annie practice with the new anti-personnel equipment but Annie reiterates that she does not intend to continue helping the group. Mikasa notices Annie watching Armin and reminds her that he will be going with them to find Eren, but Annie does not change her mind. Annie asks Mikasa if she will kill Eren to save humanity and Mikasa claims that she will not.[251]

Mikasa kills Floch

As work on the flying boat nears completion, Mikasa and the other soldiers prepare to depart. However, Floch reveals himself inside the hangar, having followed them across the ocean, and fires on them. Mikasa fires one of her anchors into Floch’s throat, killing him before he can harm anyone, but she is not quick enough to stop him from rupturing the boat’s fuel tank. As Eren’s Titans arrive in Odiha, the group is forced to depart without Hange, who stays behind to buy them time to escape.[252]

En route to Eren, Mikasa participates in the meeting to discuss the best plan to stop him. During the meeting, Mikasa inquires about Reiner’s hunch that Eren wants to be stopped by someone. The meeting is interrupted as the group is being pulled into Paths by Eren. As his comrades try to talk Eren down, Mikasa pleads for Eren to return to them. Seeing Eren in the distance, Mikasa and the others try to reach him but are unable to get any closer. Eren tells them that he called them to Paths to let them know that they will have to kill him to stop the Rumbling, before sending them back to the flying boat.[253]

As the flying boat reaches Eren it comes under fire from the Beast Titan. Mikasa and her comrades jump from the boat and use their maneuvering gear to evade the Beast’s projectiles before engaging it directly.[254] The group makes short work of the Beast Titan, only to find that Zeke is not inside its nape. Mikasa is alarmed when Armin decides to transform and use the explosion to find Zeke, but Armin reassures her that he does not intend to kill Eren. However, before Armin can execute his plan an army of Titans begins generating atop Eren and abducts him. Pieck is disabled while trying to blow up Eren’s nape and Levi orders his squad to focus on saving Armin.

Mikasa prepares for a last stand

They do not get far before Bertolt Hoover’s Colossus Titan appears. It disables Reiner’s Titan and throws it at the group, knocking them off Eren’s Titan. Mikasa is left the only soldier with functioning maneuvering equipment in any state to fight leaving her as the only one to defend her comrades from the approaching Titans. She is quickly overwhelmed defending all of her comrades and Levi uses up the last of his strength to aid her, but passes out from his injuries in the process. Mustering her strength, Mikasa prepares to make a last stand against the Titans, only for them all to be whisked to safety by Falco, who has learned to fly in his Titan form.[255]

Atop Falco’s Titan, Mikasa reveals to Annie that Armin has been captured by Eren’s Titans and asks Annie to help rescue him. Levi decides to have the group split up to simultaneously rescue Armin and detonate the explosives on Eren’s nape, to Mikasa’s horror. Mikasa tries to change her friends’ minds but is unsuccessful and Annie orders her to focus on rescuing Armin to take her mind off Eren.

Mikasa pursues the Okapi Titan

Arriving at Eren’s Titan’s tailbone, Mikasa, Connie and Annie identify the Titan which took Armin and begin their pursuit of it. As the three fight off the Titans which attack them, the Okapi Titan which took Armin flees and Mikasa has Annie throw her in its direction in the hopes of catching up to it. However, other Titans begin physically shielding it and she eventually breaks her blades on the skin of an Armored Titan. Annie saves Mikasa from the Armor, but the two of them and Connie are left surrounded as the Okapi flees to Bertolt’s Colossus Titan.[256] Just as they are about to be overwhelmed, Bertolt’s Titan intervenes and begins fighting alongside them. Mikasa uses the opportunity to pursue the Okapi again and is finally able to cut Armin out of its mouth after Gabi shoots it in the head.[257] Jean manages to detonate Eren’s nape thanks to the help of their new allies and Mikasa joins her friends in evacuating atop Falco’s Titan so that Armin can transform.[258]

As the group touches down in Fort Salta, Mikasa begins suffering from another headache, grieving that the last conversation she had with Eren ended with him claiming he hated her. The group is relieved to see that Reiner survived Armin’s transformation, but they are disheartened to see that Eren and the centipede also survived. To Mikasa’s distress, Levi decides that the only hope they have of stopping the Rumbling is killing Eren so that the source cannot reattach itself to him. The source begins emitting smoke into Salta and the soldiers realize that it is attempting to transform the Eldians in the fort into pure Titans. Leaving behind Jean and Connie, Mikasa joins Levi and Pieck in boarding Falco and departing to face Eren once again.[259]

As they draw near to Eren, Mikasa experiences another strong headache and is suddenly brought into a Paths place by Eren. Mikasa is living in isolation with Eren following their decision to run away from the Paradis-Marleyan conflict. Eren notices that Mikasa has been crying, and Mikasa wonders if it is okay for her to be there. Eren muses that the only option they had was to run away and live out the rest of his four years in peace together, since he could not bring himself to allow Historia to suffer or to Rumble the people living outside the Walls.

Mikasa kisses Eren goodbye

Mikasa apologizes for bringing up the past, and Eren asks her to forget about him when he dies. In the real world, Mikasa says that she cannot forget him. Tying her scarf around her neck once again, Mikasa tells Levi that Eren is inside his Titan’s mouth and asks him to help her reach him. Levi uses a Thunder Spear to blow a hole in Eren’s Titan mouth and Mikasa enters it, immediately severing Eren’s head from the spine. Kissing Eren, Mikasa bids him goodbye.[260]

Carrying Eren’s head, Mikasa finds Armin on the battlefield and the two mourn their friend’s death. Mikasa tells Armin that she plans to leave on her own so that she can give Eren a proper burial. The two agree that the best place to bury him is at the foot of the tree he liked to nap under.[261] As Mikasa departs she sees the apparition of Ymir. Understanding that Ymir’s love for Fritz was a torment that she cannot undo, she instead thanks Ymir for bringing the life into the world which allowed for her to be born. Mikasa wishes Ymir a good rest as she continues on her way back to Paradis.[262]

Mikasa visits Eren’s grave

Mikasa returns to Paradis Island and, true to her word, makes a small grave for Eren at the tree he liked to sleep under outside of Shiganshina District. Three years after his death, Mikasa visits Eren’s grave and reveals that their friends are going to be coming to visit him soon. Wishing to see him again, Mikasa begins to cry. Her tears are interrupted by a bird, which grabs the end of her scarf and tightens it before flying away. As she watches the bird fly away, Mikasa thanks Eren for wrapping the scarf around her once more.[263]

Years later, Mikasa continues to regularly visit Eren’s grave with her new family for decades before eventually passing away at an old age and is buried with Eren’s scarf.[31]

Abilities

Vertical Maneuvering Equipment

While she was still training, Keith even noted that Mikasa’s performance is exemplary in every subject and that she is truly a genius.[47] Having a prodigious skill in vertical maneuvering equipment, she can use blades to easily strike and slash Titans with speed and efficiency. This has led to her being mentioned as a military genius many times and «as valuable as a hundred average soldiers.»[264] Her mastery and remarkable will allows her to display a lethal force against Titans rarely seen among soldiers, recruits or veterans alike. This has been proven true when she took on Annie in her Titan form, who had killed numerous experienced veterans with ease before, and survived.[89]

Usage of Thunder Spears

While being a new way of weapons manipulation, Mikasa easily mastered how to use Thunder Spears. She has the strength to carry up eight spears with ease, before simultaneously throwing and detonating them on Titans with greater accuracy than the weapon inventor.[265]

Strength

Owing to the need to protect Eren who often runs off looking for trouble, Mikasa had honed herself to be a talented fighter at a very young age. She often threw boys bigger than her with ease and scared them enough to run away upon seeing her despite their superior numbers.[266] Having undergone intense training, Mikasa is strong enough to lift Eren and several equipment boxes off the ground without effort.[267][268]

Awakened power

Being an Ackerman, Mikasa has «awakened» a dormant power within her earlier in her life when her parents were murdered and she was going to be kidnapped until Eren saved her. It has been described as «knowing exactly what needed to be done,»[270] developing fighting instincts and perfect self-control of her body far above the average human. This is because she can access the Power of the Titans to a limited extent without transforming. She is able to connect to every single Ackerman before her via the paths and gain their battle experience.[271]

Being the child of an Ackerman and an Asian, Mikasa retains the ability to resist memory manipulation from the Founding Titan.[272]

Relationships

  • Mikasa’s mother and father — Mikasa shared a loving bond with her parents, and was happy with the simple life they shared. Being one of the last members of an Asian clan, Mikasa’s mother had Mikasa undergo a scarring ritual involving the engraving of their clan’s mark on her right forearm. She praised Mikasa for receiving the mark without making a fuss and encouraged her to carry on the legacy with her own children.[33] Mr. Ackerman was a kind father to Mikasa, and she was very relaxed around him. She was not shy of asking either parent anything she did not know, and trusted them completely. The day a trio of robbers attacked and killed her parents in front of her, Mikasa lost all hope and believed her world had gone cold until Eren’s father decided to take her in.
  • Grisha Yeager — Though he initially hoped Mikasa would get along with Eren as a friend, in the end Grisha took in Mikasa after the brutal murder of her parents.[273] He treated her kindly as if she were his own daughter, and for that Mikasa respected and gratefully relied on him as a father figure.
  • Carla Yeager — Carla took care of Mikasa during her stay in the Yeager household. Much like her husband and son, she treated Mikasa as a family member and took care of her. The two seemed to have an implicit understanding between them when it came to keeping Eren out of trouble. Carla urged Mikasa to look out for Eren and give him help when he needed it. During the Titans’ assault on their home town, she desperately tried to lift the roof beam preventing Carla from running away from the danger.[274] Despite Carla’s pleas, she tearfully refused to leave her and could not bring herself to watch as a Titan eventually killed and ate her.
  • Eren Yeager — She always wears a scarf, given to her by Eren, as a token of the moment when he first wrapped it around her in an attempt to comfort her when she had first lost all hope. From the time he saved her life and accepted her into his home, Eren had been a great source of strength and comfort for her, and when she had thought him dead, she very nearly allowed herself to die as well, but kept living on to remember him, and when he turned out to be alive, she bursted out in tears of relief. She became distraught when learning Eren had been abducted, wrapping the scarf over her face to hide her sadness. Because he was the only family she had left, she would go to any lengths to ensure his safety, and vowed to follow him wherever he may go, stating her only wish was to remain by his side; when she discovered that Eren would die in a few years due to the «Curse of Ymir,» Mikasa visibly had trouble accepting this and, not wanting to face the reality that she would lose Eren, blatantly said it was not true. Due to Mikasa’s protective nature over him, Eren often became annoyed and told her not to treat him like her baby brother. Because of her intense devotion to him, several people, from Ian to Jean and even Levi, are confused about the nature of their relationship. Interestingly, Mikasa only ever blushed when Eren was involved. Examples of this include her embarrassed blush when Ian mistook him for her lover during the reconquest of Trost,[26] Armin leaving her alone with Eren after capturing the Female Titan,[100] and, when she believed she was about to die, thanked Eren for everything he had done for her.[275] After going across the sea, Eren asked Mikasa about what he meant to her. Mikasa stammered a little before replying that he was «family,» as the others arrive and interrupt them, disappointing Eren. Their relationship somewhat suffers after interacting with some Marleyans and after the Battle of Liberio; seeing Eren seemingly dismissive of her concerns about the numerous innocent civilians he killed prompts Mikasa to see that he had become colder and more detached, worrying her about his overall state of mind. Their bond was, at least temporarily, tested once Eren seemingly fully committed to the Yeagerists and insulted her, claiming he had always hated her.[276] During the start of the Rumbling, Mikasa recalled back to Eren’s question of their bond, wondering if things would be different had she given a different answer. She was determined not to kill Eren and simply bring him back to his senses; however, when Eren stated that the only way to stop him was by fighting and killing, Mikasa was extremely torn by this revelation. Shortly after the Rumbling was stopped, Mikasa experienced a Paths life and place Eren brought her to, where the two ran away together to live his remaining four years in peace, later admitting to Armin about his feelings for Mikasa and desire to be with her, wishing she would remember him for the rest of her life and not love anyone else. Mikasa would continue to mourn Eren while visiting his grave for decades with her new family until passing away of old age while wearing his scarf.
  • Armin Arlert — Mikasa is a very close friend of Armin’s. She frequently helped Eren fend off the older boys who bullied him when they were children. Mikasa recognizes Armin’s ability to reason out the best solution and come up with the best strategy during dire situations, and is faithful to him and trusts him deeply, as shown when she refused to leave him behind to his death during the Battle of Trost. She encouraged him to have more confidence in himself whenever he doubted or criticized himself. Her faith in him, along with Eren’s, were responsible for Armin’s boost in confidence from the time he attempted to convince a hostile brigade of soldiers of Eren’s value as a military weapon.[277] Additionally, when Armin was dying from being almost burned to death she is seen breaking down because Levi would not give Armin the Titan injection, staging a mutiny to get Armin revived, demonstrating how much she cares for his well-being, and when he is brought back, she smiles with tears flowing down her face.[278] Years later, after the Battle of Liberio and Eren’s betrayal, Mikasa has come to rely on Armin for emotional support and reassurance, the pair often accompanying one another.
  • Hannes — it is implied that Mikasa was grateful towards Hannes for rescuing her and Eren from being killed by the Titan that ate Eren’s mother. Despite admitting to his cowardice in front of her, she did not resent him for failing to rescue Carla, and she valued him as one of the few people left with whom she shared memories of more peaceful times. Hannes comforted her when she was depressed over losing Eren, and also encouraged Mikasa not to give up, which snapped her out of her grief. When she was seriously injured, Hannes defended both her and Eren from the Smiling Titan, only to lose his life in the end.[279] Retreating on horseback the safety of Wall Rose, Mikasa appeared to be in anguish over his loss, and still grieves for Hannes with Eren and Armin.
  • Annie Leonhart — Mikasa had a rivalry with Annie when they were both part of the 104th Training Corps.[citation needed] This would turn into outright animosity once Annie was confirmed to be the Female Titan who was responsible for the deaths of countless soldiers and Eren’s attempted kidnapping.[citation needed] Mikasa is likely jealous of Annie’s relationship with Eren, since she throws Reiner bodily on top of Eren and Annie in order to interrupt their training when Annie is demonstrating how to do a throw.[280] It appears that her hatred towards Annie has cooled off considerably once both sides began working together; Mikasa would even console Annie as the latter would comment how she was done fighting for people who have treated her poorly all throughout her life.[281]
  • Reiner Braun and Bertolt Hoover — It is not known if Mikasa had any interaction with either Reiner or Bertolt but after it is revealed they were behind the fall of Wall Maria, Mikasa has shown nothing but rage and anger towards them. However, Mikasa realizes that when she attacked both of them after Reiner revealed their identities as the Armored Titan and Colossus Titan, she hesitated and was unable to finish them off. She agonizes over this failure, recognizing that she should have been able to kill them with her level of skill.[282] When she finally caught up to them, she flew into a murderous rage, threatening Ymir and even Krista when they came between her and the traitors. Calling them a «plague upon humanity,» and stating that there is no reason to care what their reasons and motivations might be, she also encouraged the others to kill them without mercy. However, her rampage was stalled by Bertolt’s emotional confession. While it is currently unknown if her feelings towards the two have changed over the following years, it is known that Mikasa has at least temporarily put aside her animosity towards Reiner and is willing to work alongside him to stop the Rumbling.
  • Jean Kirstein — Her primary interactions with him relate to his rivalry with Eren, and it is unclear whether she is even aware of his affections for her. When he grimly admonished Eren for attacking her, Mikasa felt Jean was attempting to discredit Eren, and quickly became defensive on his behalf. It is implied that he continues to harbor feelings for Mikasa, as he lost his composure when he saw a Titan had grabbed her, and furiously attacked it head-on in order to save her.[283]
  • Sasha Blouse — Though the two have distinct personalities. Mikasa respected Sasha’s instincts. Sasha and Mikasa get along really well as the two have been roommates since their cadet days. Even though Sasha snores in her sleep, Mikasa does not seem to mind. The two joked around and were close enough for Mikasa considers to her be one of her closest friends besides Eren and Armin. When Jean told the others about Sasha getting shot and that Sasha would not make it, Mikasa ran out of the room to be by Sasha’s side. When Sasha died Mikasa shacked Sasha’s body in a vague attempt to ring her back. Sasha’s death distressed her immensely. After Sasha’s funeral Mikasa stayed by her grave and started talking about what had to be done for the Eldians to live.
  • Louise — After Mikasa saved a young Louise and her mother during the Battle of Trost, Mikasa left an indelible impression on the girl. After this, Lousie began idolizing Mikasa, which ultimately became her primary reason for joining the Survey Corps.[284] Years later, Mikasa reunites with Louise but is slightly put off by her constant idolization and also disapproves of how she has decided to follow Eren and the Yeagerists.[285] Nevertheless, Louise continues to look up to Mikasa for strength and leadership, wanting to get closer to her. When Mikasa came to a hospital for her scarf where a dying Louise was in, the latter revealed her motivation of how Mikasa inspired her to join the Survey Corps and devote her heart. However, Mikasa demands her scarf back and silently leaves, remaining indifferent to Louise’s integrity.
  • Levi Ackerman — Their relationship began in a negative fashion, as she witnessed him beat Eren during a military trial.[286] She once swore to make him pay for his abuse and lashed out at him when the Female Titan managed to kidnap Eren after slaughtering Levi’s squad.[287][288] Regardless, he expresses an understanding of her and is wounded saving her life—while temporarily sidelined, he repeatedly offers her advice, and she herself agonizes over causing his injury.[289] It is unknown if she still bears a profound grudge against him, though she eventually comes to accept his leadership.[290] They both share the last name Ackerman, although their exact relationship is unknown.[291]

Specifically, he claims to have gotten the ideas for Mikasa’s scarf, hairstyle, eyes and eyebrows from the woman. He has also noted that he originally intended for Mikasa to be a Westerner like the rest of the series’ cast and only decided to make her part-Asian after seeing the woman.[316]
  • Mikasa’s name is taken from the battleship Mikasa, a unique pre-dreadnought battleship of the Imperial Japanese Navy, and served as a flagship during the Russo-Japanese War. Mikasa Ackerman is one of the main protagonists of Attack on Titan.

Background

Survival of the fittest is a status quo that keeps you free in heart, but the cost can sometimes be those you love taken all away in a blink of an eye. For Misaka Ackerman, that is what happened to her in the world of Attack on Titan, where giant meat eating monsters called Titans roam the world and eat humans. Mikasa and her family lived inside the walls of Maria and secretly lived very peacefully…until at the age of 9, her father and mother were murdered in front of her very eyes by human traffickers. Kidnapped because of her bloodline and now being one of the last descendants of the Asian Azumabito Clan, she was helpless and emotionless until her spark was brought back when Eren Yeager came and helped her murdered her captives. After that she lived with Eren and his family for a while and lived happily with their friend Armin.

But then, everything changed when the Titans attacked Wall Maria. Thanks to the Colossal and Armored Titans, they broke through the wall and let the rest kill or eat everyone in their paths, including Eren’s mother who in her last moments told Mikasa to protect Eren no matter what. In the aftermath of Wall Maria being taken, Mikasa joined the Cadet Corps as the 104th class with Eren and Armin in order to keep her promise and protect Eren and those she loves (which was Eren, but she protected Armin as well). Then in defending Wall Rose with a second attack from the titans, the trio along with the rest of Paradis Island discovered the hard way that shocked the core of the series: Eren became a Titan. Specifically, he was a Titan Shifter, humans capable of turning into Titans while maintaining their intellect. Protecting him as best she could from the soldiers and government of Paradis Island, their lives were spared thanks to the Scouts Regiment and one badass Levi Ackerman (yes, he is Mikasa’s family bloodline and was found out later on). All three of them would join the Scouts soon after. Mikasa would follow in fighting the other titans, help defeat the Female Titan, and support Eren and the rest of the Scouts to discover the origins of Eren’s abilities and take back Wall Maria.

From there, Mikasa and the rest of the scouts and Corps 104 discovered the hard way that most of them too were titans like Eren. The Female Titan that got captured was Annie Leonhart, The Armor Titan was Reiner Braun, The Colossal Titan was Berthholdt Hoover (until Armin took the title later and killed him), and others became titans or were government spies that captured Eren a lot. Mikasa helped her teammates in saving Eren and her comrades from using him for their goals. Until the discovery to Eren’s dad’s basement exposed the humans were the Titans all along, and they were not alone in the world. Allies were lost and the shocking realization of the Titans and Eren and Armin’s short lifespans brought emotional distress to Mikasa. The trio and the Scouts soon after prepared for war against the enemies beyond the sea.

Mikasa and the others would fight the nation of Marley and would discover her bloodline ruled Hizuru, with her being the lost lord. Eren gets “captured” again and the Scouts go on the attack to get him back, with one hell of a battle fought when the War Hammer, Cart, and Jaw Titans were brought in from Marley. They lost the fight, but got Eren back only to realize it was Eren’s plan to be captured. To make matters worse, Sasha the Potato Girl got killed by an enemy Marley onboard.

Eren got arrested and judged after his behavior in Marley. Mikasa and Armin tried to defend him, and knew something was wrong. They tried to explain it to the police and chief, but only to barely survive an assinanation attempt and discovered Eren escaped. After catching up with Eren, the shocking reveal was how Eren mostly joined the Yeagerists as their leader, the organization that is responsible for Eren’s escape, and influence over Paradis Eldian where they captured the military. Eren beat up Armin, and held both Armin and Mikasa prisoner. They escaped later, as Eren planned to destroy the world to where only Eldian remains, known as The Rumbling.

In the final battle, the Survey Corps made an alliance with the Marleyans in order to put an end to the Yeagerists at Fort Salta. Mikasa killed Floch Froster upon their arrival with Annie, and fought hard against Titans to get to Eren. Armin got captured and Mikasa helped save him while fighting the Okapi Titan and Armored Titans. As Eren and Armin fought each other in their Titan forms, Levi and Mikasa blew a hole in Eren’s teeth so Mikasa could get inside. Eren communicated with her to say his goodbyes and confess his feelings towards her before Mikasa promptly beheaded him. Giving one last kiss to his severed head, she said goodbye to the love of her life, ending the war.

In the aftermath, Yeagerists killed about 80% of the world and had taken over Elidan and renamed it the Elidan Empire. But, Mikasa went back to Paradis Island to make Eren a burial ground under his favorite tree where he napped as a child. Three years after the war, Mikasa returns to Eren’s grave where she mourns her friends joining him soon, but wishes to see him again one last time. She cries as a bird fails to catch the scarf Eren gave to her, warping around her once more. She thanks Eren, putting a conclusion to her journey.

Powers & Abilities

  • Skilled Martial Artist: Thanks to her time in the Survey Corp, Mikasa has been trained in hand to hand combat in case battles were fought from inside the walls. Mikasa was so skilled in combat, she can throw grown men like Renier in the air at ease, and keep up with pros like Annie Leonhart.
  • Skilled Swordsmanship: Like any Scout, Mikasa has trained for countless hours in order to master the art of the blade. However, she stands out compared to others in this regard, as few humans can match her skills in sword fighting.
  • Ackerman’s Paths: Known as Path’s of the Ackermans, this is Mikasa’s greatest ability yet. Passed down from the Ackerman clan, the user has the combined skills of all Ackermans that lived before them (Kinda like the Avatar State). Not only does the path improve the user’s battle skills and senses, but it can also increase reaction speed and intelligence. Plus, Eren stated that Ackermans have strengths of a titan without transforming when awakened, which is confirmed for Mikasa when she killed her final kidnapper. Levi used this ability numerous times against his fights with the Beast and Female Titans, and Mikasa can do the same given more time and experience compared to Levi.

Equipment

  • 3-Dimensional Maneuver Gear: Standard equipment for any member of the Survey Corps, this gear gives the humans a distinct advantage over their much larger Titan enemies. The maneuverability of the gear takes advantage of the humans’ smaller hitboxes to the larger forms of the titans, like a fly against an ordinary human. The gear is gas powered and comes with holsters for storing anti-Titan swords.
  • Anti-Personnel Maneuver Gear: Mostly an upgrade to the 3-Dimensional Maneuver Gear, these were given to the Survey Corps and the Scouts after defeating the Military Police Brigade and Kenny Ackerman. This version of the gear mostly goes more aggressive on the opponents and replaces the swords with semi-automatic pistols. While they were originally only used for humans since they are not as open ranged as the 3D Gear, they got a bigger upgrade for the following weapon below and Mikasa combined both gears for better performance.
  • Anti-Titan Swords: The swords that are mostly used for slaying titans, these blades come with her vertical maneuvering equipment. They’re very light and are tough enough to pierce the crazy hard skin of Titans. Despite being composed of steel and other rare metals, they can break from extended usage, though upgrades can be made to improve efficiency.  Mikasa also has multiple swords to replace the broken ones (12 replacements at minimum).
  • Thunder Spears: Mikasa’s greatest weapon. Developed specifically for getting around a Titan’s hardening ability, these bad boys punch through Titan armor like it’s made of glass. They’re mostly mini missiles that can almost one shot anything, and can truly cause critical damage to even the strongest of Titans. She can carry eight all at once, and is very accurate with her shots, even better than Hange Zoë, who made the weapons. Though they have a weakness in that they will do significant damage to the user if they are caught in the explosion. As such, Mikasa will often fire them off at a long range and then trigger the explosion rather than getting in close to fire it.
    • There powerful enough to shatter the Armored Titan´s armor, which survived busting a hole through Wall Maria (18.271 tons of TNT/City Block level).

Feats

Strength

  • As a child, she crushed the handle of a knife, broke the floorboard, and thrust a knife through a man deep enough to kill him in one stab
  • As a preteen, she dragged Eren of similar size with one hand while running, and throws him several feet into a wall through the air
  • She is able to jump high enough to be able to kick an older kid in the face
    • Spun that same kid around in the air
  • She can casually lift Eren as he is in the middle of throwing a punch, and Eren is unable to break free of her grasp
  • Sent Reiner through the air to accurately land on Annie and Eren
    • Casually knocks down two men with the flat of her blades
  • As a Survey Corps, she grabbed both Eren and Armin with either hand, and ran them down a flight of stairs
  • Sliced off Reiner’s arm, several inches vertically through his other hand, and deep into his skull with one blade. Would have been able to kill him if not hesitant
  • Jumped several feet into the air and knees a man, deforming his face mid-hit
    • This knee likely knocked the man out, judging by lack of movement and struggle in following panels
    • In the anime, Mikasa also took down the other two merchant lackeys
  • Kicked an MP hard enough to send them straight downwards and end their horizontal momentum
  • Between the timeskip, Mikasa is seen lifting several yards’ worth of railroad tracks; railroad tracks can weigh about a ton each
  • After the timeskip, she sliced off an entire foot of the Jaw Titan, and disabled the other leg with one move
  • Carried eight Thunder Spears at once with ease, and mastered it in a short time with throwing accuracy against Titans

Speed

  • Her 3DMG can let her reach speeds of over 366 kmph, that´s almost 1/3 the Speed of Sound.
  • With the 3DMG, outpaced elite Garrison troops as a cadet, catches up to an abnormal titan, in the first ever real battle
  • Dodged multiple strikes from Eren’s Titan form, including a surprise attack. Only got hit once by debris
  • Took down two titan dummies with one gas stream, appeared to be a blur in the distance
    • Dodged multiple close-ranged titan attacks, displayed good balance and agility.
  • Kept pace with Female Titan’s top travel speeds while also cutting her enough to bring her down. A Female Titan’s top speed is over 80 km/h
  • Dodged a blow from the Female Titan, who had time to aim and think about the attack
    • The Female Titan is fast enough to easily dodge Eren’s Titan and has shown to have incredibly fast strikes with a moment to prepare
  • Ran down a flight of stairs, carrying two people, before Annie can cut herself to transform
  • Flew in from Female Titan’s field of view, but is too fast for her to react to it
    • Female Titan has multiple feats of catching soldiers before they can close in
  • Mikasa made it up the entire wall (50 meters) before the Female Titan can reach the top and cuts her fingers off before she can stop it
  • Crossed several feet before Reiner can reach Eren, who is only a few steps away
  • Was able to think and aim while being thrown by Annie at a pig-faced Titan so fast she couldn’t halt her momentum and would’ve connected her strike had 2 other titans not gotten in the way
  • Blitzed the Jaw Titan
  • Avoided a shot from the Warhammer Titan’s crossbow
  • Dodged machine gun fire
  • Reacted and saved Armin from a bomb before it exploded
  • Is faster than Eren, who reacted and transformed into his titan form before a cannon shot him, Armin, and Mikasa

Durability

  • Took a large fall at high speeds, hitting the side of a building but ultimately landing in a flexible sheet, and got up with no injury
    • Not phased by a 12-15 meter fall (10 Gs = 10x Earth´s Gravity)
      • For referance, Astronaut´s can withstand about 3 Gs of Force during lift off, and Fighter Pilots can withstand up to 9 Gs of Force for a second or two during aerial combat, even just 6 Gs for a sustained period of time can be fatal for a human being. But Mikasa can survive almost twice that much while fighting giant Titans at the same time.
  • Squeezed by a titan’s grip, breaking multiple ribs, but catches Eren soon after
  • Survived a bomb exploding in the next room with Armin
  • Survived the shockwave of Eren’s Titan form punching near her
  • Very Debatable: Tanked a Thunder Spear at point blank against the Armor Titan

Skill

  • Killed Eren Yeager, the leader of the Titans and the one who started the genocide of non-Eldians via the Rumbling
  • Killed Floch Florester, the second in command of the Yeagerists
  • Was one of the members of the “Alliance” who joined together in order to save the world from the Rumbling
  • Was the top performing cadet in the Survey Corps during training
  • Defended Utgart Castle from a Titan ambush
  • Helped defend Wall Rose and Trost
  • Reclaimed the Shiganshina district and Wall Maria
  • Fought against the Female, Armor, and Colossal Titans multiple times
  • Defeated the Anti-Personnel Control Squad.
  • Fought nearly all of the Nine Titans, including Jaw, and Okapi titans

Weaknesses

  • Mikasa’s emotional state for most of the series was pretty closely knit with Eren’s safety. This has led her to making dumb, reckless decisions that have almost gotten her killed, and more than once at that. Additionally, she completely lost the will to live early on in the series when she thought Eren had been killed. Her emotional ties to Eren are a double edged sword, both a tremendous strength that has led her to pulling off some absurd feats, and her greatest weakness at the same time. Even without Eren, Mikasa has trouble keeping a cool head against opponents more skilled than her, which is an albeit rare occurrence.
  • On the non-emotional front, Mikasa’s 3D maneuver gear is far from impervious to damage. The lines can be cut, the blades can be snapped, and gas can run out. Once it’s gone, it’s unlikely she’ll be able to find replacement equipment during a confrontation like this. This won’t make Mikasa any less strong, but it will greatly reduce her mobility.

Until the discovery to Eren’s dad’s basement exposed the humans were the Titans all along, and they were not alone in the world. Allies were lost and the shocking realization of the Titans and Eren and Armin’s short lifespans brought emotional distress to Mikasa. «This world is cruel. And yet… so beautiful.»

-Mikasa

Mikasa Ackerman (ミカサ・アッカーマン Mikasa Akkāman?, also spelled as Mikasa Ackermann in the FUNimation dub of the anime) is the adoptive sister of Eren Yeager, and the main female protagonist of the series.

After her biological parents were murdered by human traffickers, she was rescued by Eren and lived with him and his mother and father for approximately a year before the fall of Wall Maria.

Though she desires only to live a peaceful life with Eren, Mikasa chose to follow him into the military — where she is considered the best soldier among the 104th Training Corps — and later into the Survey Corps.

Appearance

Mikasa is a fairly tall, physically fit, and very muscular teenage girl with chin-length black hair she initially wore longer, but cut short at Eren’s suggestion, despite Jean telling her it was beautiful. She is of Asian heritage, with pale skin and calm, black eyes. In the anime, however, her eye color is not consistent and often varies, depending on the light and surroundings, between shades of gray and occasionally blue. Her body has been depicted as extremely well-toned, with little, if any, in the way of body fat and muscles lined throughout her arms, legs, and abs. Mikasa also has a small scar below her right eye, which she received after Eren (in his Titan Form) unknowingly attempted to kill her.

As a soldier, Mikasa often wears a uniform consisting of a short, light-brown jacket with the badge of the Survey Corps on both shoulders, on the front left pocket, and on the center of the back, a white shirt, a black sash around the waist covering the hips, white pants, and black knee-high leather boots. In the anime, the sash and boots are dark brown. She also wears a green cape with the symbol of the Survey Corps after entering the faction. A unique part of her attire is a black (dark red in the anime) scarf, which was given to her by Eren after saving her from human traffickers. Because of that, it is very precious to her, and she almost always has it with her.

Personality

A few years before joining the Yeager family, Mikasa appeared to be a cheerful, outgoing, yet unusually perceptive child. From an early age, Mikasa was aware of the harshness of nature, witnessing the manner in which predators would hunt and kill weaker prey. However, her innocence allowed her to push these thoughts to the back of her mind, and she continued to live happily with her parents. This illusory peace was shattered when a band of criminals brutally murdered her parents before her eyes in a failed kidnapping attempt on herself and her mother. To save herself and her rescuer, Eren Yeager, Mikasa managed to abandon all inhibition and hesitation, allowing her to kill one of her assailants. Following this traumatic event, Mikasa would gain a generally cynical outlook on life and accept the world as a cruel place where only those who are strong are able to survive.

After the murder of her parents, Mikasa has become noticeably emotionally withdrawn and serious, but she still loves and cares deeply for her friends, especially Eren and Armin, seeing them as the last remnants of a family she cannot afford to lose. Her personality as a teenager is very much influenced and molded by Eren, who told her she stood no chance of survival if she did not fight for it. His words continue to stay with her, and her mind automatically recalls them to spur her on when she is close to death. Her determination to protect Eren as much as possible may also have contributed greatly to her phenomenal skills as a soldier. Though she is among the best of the best, she remains humble and refrains from putting on airs or displaying arrogance.

Mikasa’s protective attitude towards Eren

Mikasa has a strong sense of right and wrong, but she is also very protective of Eren and does all she can to advise him to follow what she deems to be the right track. Despite that, she knows well that she cannot always sway Eren in his decisions and makes a point to follow Eren to almost everywhere he goes and stick by whatever final decisions he makes, just so that she can be around to help him out when he is in trouble. The sole reason she enlisted in the military and joined the Survey Corps after her graduation was to keep an eye on Eren, despite the fact that she truly wished to live out the rest of her days in relative peace within the Walls alongside him. She also takes Eren’s opinion seriously, so much so that when he once said that her hair was too long, she immediately had it cut, even though Jean had just commented that it looked beautiful.

Despite all her blind loyalty, Mikasa is quite stoic and level-headed. Her will is remarkably strong, and she is rarely seen to lose her cool or be at a loss of what to do, no matter how bleak a situation seems to be. Even when she believed Eren to be dead, outwardly she managed to remain so calm that only Armin could tell that she was battling with the pain of losing Eren. However, she is not completely immune to the effects of her emotions. Her strong feelings for Eren, particularly when he is in harm’s way, does at times cloud her judgement — sometimes to the endangerment of herself and others. A notable example is the occasion she briefly gave into her grief over Eren’s apparent demise and lost the will to live — forgetting her responsibility for the lives of the soldiers she had taken upon herself to lead in the process. However, she was reawakened by her memories of Eren, after which she made a conscious decision to never give up again, as if she were to die, her memories of Eren would die with her. When she found him alive and well, she completely lost her composure and wept tears of joy.

Mikasa’s bond with Eren is undoubtedly her most important relationship, and one that defines Mikasa. For Eren’s sake, Mikasa has expressed a variety of emotions such as compassion, anger, embarrassment, sadness and tenderness. She has openly wept tears of relief at his safety, and developed vengeful grudges towards those who harm him. She relentlessly attacked the Female Titan in a murderous fury as it attempted to abduct Eren, and later attempted to kill Reiner and Bertolt for trying to do the same. Mikasa blushed when it was insinuated she and Eren were lovers, and has suffered crippling distress at the thought of losing Eren forever. Mikasa also wears the red scarf Eren gave her when they first met, holding on to it as a source of strength and comfort when she is upset.

History

Mikasa was born to a European father and Asian mother. Before her parents’ death, she lived peacefully with them in the farmlands of Wall Maria. In the manga, Mikasa underwent a painful scarring ritual from her mother, whom cut into her skin the mark of their Asian clan, while in the anime and visual novel, was taught an Asian style embroidery. Being the last of their race made them high value targets to human traffickers, who killed Mikasa’s parents and attempted to kidnap her for the purpose of selling her as a slave to the people in the Capitol, when she was only nine years old.

Mikasa receives the scarf

She was rescued by Eren, who tricked and killed two of the slavers. He was then overwhelmed by the third trafficker and was on the verge of being strangled. Desperately, Eren urged Mikasa to fight to win. Although she was initially frightened, she came to realize that, «This world is a callous and merciless place,» dispatching the kidnapper who was trying to kill Eren. When Eren’s father arrived with members of the Military Police Brigade, she was given the scarf by Eren and accepted into his family. This event awakened the fighting instincts and perfect self-control that would later turn her into a formidable soldier. She lived with Eren’s family in Wall Maria’s Shiganshina District until it was destroyed by the Colossus Titan.

Armin, Eren, and Mikasa see the Colossus Titan

At that moment, the three kids witness the sudden appearance of a Colossus Titan that breaches the Wall’s gate. Mikasa and Eren run back to their home to find it crushed and their mother trapped under the debris. In spite of their attempts, Mikasa and Eren are unable to free her, Hannes rescuing them as a Titan devours their mother. Mikasa and Eren are placed on a ship just as the Armored Titan breaks through the inner gate, letting the Titans inside Wall Maria, witnessing Eren’s vow to kill all the Titans as they are transported to safety. Once inside the safety of Wall Rose, Eren confronts a soldier from the Garrison who manifests his annoyance for having to share their food with outsiders. The short beating the soldiers give Eren cause him to claim that he will retake Wall Maria with his own hands and insult Armin for his doubt, Mikasa punching him to bring him back to his senses. She then declares that she will do everything to keep him alive, forcing him to eat the rations he had previously discarded out of anger.

104th Training Corps arc

After the events of the Wall Maria’s destruction, the government’s desperate attempt to reclaim the lands using the refugees leads to nothing but more casualties. This prompts Mikasa, Eren and Armin enroll with the army and become members of the 104th Training Corps.

During their training, Mikasa helps Eren as much as she can as he initially fails to grasp the basics of the Vertical Maneuvering Equipment. They manage to pass the qualifying tests, Mikasa quickly proving her skills and is praised as one of the best trainees in military history. At one point, Mikasa asks Annie Leonhart, a fellow trainee with exceptional skill, to teach her a self-defense technique that she was teaching Eren, which eventually calls for a bet with the 104th Training Corps to see who is the stronger fighter. At the 104th Training Corps’ graduation, she is ranked first in the class.

Battle of Trost District arc

Before having the chance to fully apply in the Survey Corps so she can keep Eren safe, the Colossus Titan breaches Wall Rose the same way it did with Wall Maria. Much to her dismay, Mikasa is assigned to the rear guard to help fend off the Titans while the civilians escape into the safety of Wall Sheena.[45] Before fulfilling her duty, she makes Eren promise her not to do anything reckless.

Mikasa kills the abnormal Titan

Later on, as an abnormal Titan approaches the escaping civilians who are blocked at the gate. Mikasa kills it, saving everyone. She then witnesses why the civilians are taking too long to escape; an overloaded cargo cart is blocking the way. Mikasa asks the businessman to move the cart so that the people could escape, but when he refuses, she has to resort threatening him after knocking his guards unconscious, which scares the man enough to relent and move his goods. Seeing a mother and daughter show their gratitude for saving them, Mikasa flashes back to the time she lost her own parents and realizes that Eren is the only family she has left Thus, with the evacuation of Trost District citizens complete, she heads to the front guard in order to aid her comrades. However, the sole trainee survivors are low on gas, making them unable to scale the Wall while the supply team inside the headquarters has barricaded themselves in against the onslaught of multiple Titans. After hearing of Eren’s supposed death from Armin, Mikasa regroups the survivors and insults them, saying she will break through the Titans assaulting the headquarters.

Because of her grief over Eren’s death, she fights irrationally and does not notice that she is running out of gas. As two Titans close in on her, she contemplates giving up and begins to remember her time with Eren, recalling Eren’s cries of fighting back against her kidnappers, which gives her motivation to fight once more. When Mikasa stands up to kill the Titan in front of her, another Titan comes running from behind and saves her. This Titan, which ignores Mikasa, gives Armin enough time to rescue Mikasa and they both continue heading to the supply HQ. As they watch this rogue Titan continue killing other Titans, they hatch a plan to lure it to the HQ and relieve the siege there. With its help, the trainees manage to successfully refill their gas tanks and have clear access to the Wall.

Mikasa protecting Eren and Armin

However, as they watch the rogue Titan dispose of the last Titans surrounding them, Eren appears out the nape of its neck. Overcome with relief that Eren is alive, Mikasa quickly rescues and embraces him, everyone leaving for the Wall. However, Jean, along with Annie, Reiner, and Bertolt are ordered to hand Eren over to superior officers under the command of Kitz Weilman and to treat the incident as something confidential. Their refusal to do so causes Mikasa and her friends to be accused of treason and find themselves surrounded by Captain Weilman’s men, who are prompt to execute them. Mikasa attempts to defend Eren by drawing her blades and threatening to kill anyone who would try to harm Eren, but witnessing Eren’s Titan form fighting in Trost District, Weilman does not hesitate and orders a cannon to fire at them in spite of the latter’s claim that he is a human. Eren uses his power to block the cannonball and tries to think of a plan of escape. He proposes that they either try to flee over the walls and escape into the Titan territory or have attempt Armin persuade the soldiers to spare them, leaving him to choose. Armin tries his best to convince the soldiers that Eren’s Titan abilities could help to save humanity, but realizes the commander is far too scared to think rationally. Before the order can be given to fire upon them once more, they are saved when Commander Dot Pixis, head administrator of the southern region, intervenes. They are sent on a mission to plug the breach in the Wall with a rock that only Eren in Titan form can lift.

As the mission commences and Eren goes into Titan form, he loses control, attacking Mikasa, and eventually knocking himself out. The elite team, lead by Ian Dietrich, Rico Brzenska and Mitabi Jarnach, designated to defend Eren as he carries the rock quarrel among themselves about what to do next. Mikasa is on the verge of attacking them until Ian orders everyone to continue protecting Eren until he recovers. Thanks to Armin’s intervention, Eren eventually regains his senses and successfully places the rock down, albeit with many casualties. At that moment, they are saved by Levi as he kills the Titans approaching them.

The Female Titan arc

After the battle of Trost District is over, Eren is brought before a military tribunal to decide his future. Despite Mikasa’s best efforts to defend him, she is forced to testify against Eren as his reckless actions have frightened many people in the courtroom. She is also forced to watch helplessly as Eren is assaulted and humiliated by Levi.

Mikasa is then seen to be a part of the 57th expedition. Shortly after leaving for Wall Maria, the Female Titan appears and defeats numerous Survey Corps members. The formation eventually reaches the Titan Forest, with Mikasa being stationed at its outskirts, making sure that no Titans enter the forest. Eventually, she attempts to approach Eren as she hears his roar in his Titan Form. Upon reaching Eren’s location, she witnesses the Female Titan devouring Eren’s human body. After overcoming the initial shock, Mikasa charges at the Female Titan, cutting it up in order to rescue Eren. However, she is unable to do so until she teams up with Levi. They manage to take Eren back and join the rest of the rest of the formation. While heading to the Walls, the formation is attacked by multiple Titans brought by a couple of rookie soldiers who disobeyed a direct order from Commander Erwin, and Mikasa must save the rookies who are caught by the Titans.

Mikasa ready to battle Annie

Following the Survey Corps’s failure, Armin manages to convince Annie to help them out until they can gather evidence to prove to the King that the Walls need to be protected better. During that time, Mikasa takes a notice of the lack of diligence and honor in the Military Police. She prepares for battle when she gets fed up with Annie’s games and excuses. She takes off her disguise and draws out out her sword to fight her, promising to «cut up the Female Titan one more time».

In the following battle, Mikasa learns that Eren in his Titan form isn’t powerful enough to defeat Annie by himself. Being the strongest and most powerful soldier herself, she decides to take the fight to her. Despite being ordered to pull away by Hange Zoë, Mikasa manages to make it to Annie as she attempted to climb over Wall Sheena to escape to the flat lands. Since Annie had already climbed more than half way towards the top of the Wall, Eren throws Mikasa upwards so she can catch up with the Female Titan, and cut off all her fingers. She then proceeds to push Annie off to fall to the ground. Annie is therefore captured, but encases herself in a crystal to avoid interrogation. However, it was far from over as Mikasa has just taken noticed of a Titan inside the Wall. As both the Survey Corps and Military Police take an encased Annie underground to detain her, Mikasa realizes the Titan hiding in Wall Sheena is alive, but is too weak to move due to a lack of sunlight. Mikasa remains at Eren’s bedside as Armin and Jean head down to a meeting involving Erwin and the Military Police.

Mikasa cuts Reiner

Following the supposed breach of Wall Rose, Mikasa, Eren and the other members of the Survey Corps come to rescue Reiner and the others from the other Titans. She is among the others who learns of Krista’s real name being Historia. After they reach the top of the Wall, Mikasa is outraged when she overhears Reiner confessing that he and Bertolt were the Titans responsible for the attack on Wall Maria and wanted Eren to join them. She takes them by surprise, attacking them with her swords and tells Eren to run. However, she fails to kill them as Reiner stops her from doing so, transforming afterwards and attempting to kidnap Eren. While Eren transforms, and engages in battle with Reiner, Mikasa faces her own troubles and regrets for not cutting off both his and Bertolt’s heads when she had the chance. During the fight with Reiner, she sees Eren in trouble and tries to fight him off. However due to the thickness of the armor, Mikasa has a hard time slicing the nape of Reiner’s neck. Eventually, Armin sees a weak link in Reiner’s line of defense in which his armor is breaking and gives Mikasa extra blades to replace her own. Taking advantage of the information, she cuts him at the back of the knee caps. However, Bertolt manages to save Reiner thanks to his abilities of the Colossus Titan, knocking out most of the soldiers in the process.

Later, Mikasa along with Hange and others from the Survey Corps are injured from the heat blast from Bertolt’s Titan form. While Armin helps them recover, he gives Mikasa the news that she was dreading to hear: Eren along with Ymir was kidnapped by both Reiner and Bertolt.Taking the scarf that he gave her, Mikasa covers her face with it and asks why Eren always runs off on them like that. She feels like she has failed in keeping her adoptive mother’s promise in always protecting him and weeps. As Armin tries to console her, Hannes arrives to give out rations to the Legion. It was him who reminds her that despite him running off the way he does and often losing fights, he never gives up on them. Even thought the odds are stacked against him and he is unwilling to admit it, Hannes always knew that Eren relied on both Mikasa and Armin when he needed them. His words and his assistance reinvigorated them and are more determined to rescue Eren. Mikasa lowers her scarf and begins eating.

Mikasa strikes Ymir

She spearheads the attack on the traitors, aggressively chasing them down as they attempt to flee from the Titan Forest. Realizing that armor was protecting Reiner’s joints this time, she instead targets Ymir and slashes into her face. Afterwards, she attempts to kill Bertolt, who escapes by hiding between the Armored Titan’s throat and his hands. Changing targets again, she prepares to try to kill Ymir and is only stopped when Krista intervenes. However, she is unmoved by Krista’s words and threatens to kill anyone that gets in her way. Her cold expression and statement that she has no mercy or compassion to spare forces Krista and Ymir to back down, allowing her to focus on trying to find a way to take down the traitors.

Jean and Connie try to speak to Bertolt and coax him into surrendering, but Mikasa coldly states that their reasons don’t matter. She calls Reiner and Bertolt a «plague upon humanity» and advises the others not to show mercy.[110] This causes Bertolt to yell at her, first stating that they never wanted to kill anyone and admitting to having cared for the others in the 104th. She is visibly shocked by this outburst, enough that it snaps her out of her murderous rage. Mikasa asks them to give Eren back, but her request is rebuffed as he claims it has to be done. Before the group can argue further, Hannes shouts a warning to them that a huge group of Titans are being lead straight towards them by Erwin Smith.

Mikasa retreats, but it is not long before Erwin orders them to attack one more time, claiming this to be the key moment for humanity’s survival. However, he gets grabbed by a Titan and in spite of their initial shock, the soldiers, along with Mikasa, follow Erwin’s orders and continue advancing. Mikasa eventually reaches her target, but has to be saved by Jean from the grasp of a Titan. Finally, Erwin frees Eren and Mikasa catches him, however, Reiner begins throwing Titans at the soldiers in an attempt to stop them and Eren and Mikasa find themselves facing a Titan they remember from 5 years ago, the Titan that ate their mother.

Believing that it will be their final moments after seeing Hannes being eaten, Mikasa tells Eren that she wants to thank him for being together with her, for teaching her how to live, and for giving and wrapping the muffler on her which she always wears. As she moves closer to Eren, he turned away to face the Smiling Titan and vowed to Mikasa that he will wrap the muffler around her as many times as he needs to. Mikasa and Eren both escaped with the others as Eren unknowingly awakens his power to control other Titans, and orders them to attack the Smiling Titan, Reiner and Bertolt.

Mikasa lies injured without her scarf and forgives Eren as he apologizes to her

Mikasa and the unified Military group arrive back at Wall Rose and are greeted by the Garrison, led by Rico Brzenska. The Garrison focuses on the wounded first and are in disbelief as they realize just how high the casualties were. Eren places Mikasa on a stretcher and apologizes before she cuts him off and tells him that it is ok. Eren notices that Erwin has lost consciousness and yells his name in concern. As the Garrison finally makes sense of the situation they take the wounded away on carts, including Mikasa. Over the course of a week Mikasa has recovered from her fractured ribs while Levi made her a member of the new Special Operations Squad along with Jean, Connie, Sasha, Armin, Historia, and Eren. The squad have relocated to a remote cabin in the woods. Mikasa and Historia come back from gathering wood and brushes off concern about her from Armin by replying that her body is getting dull. As Jean and Eren comically argue about spying on Mikasa doing sit-ups, Sasha remarks that somehow this experience feels like being trainees again. Armin wonders why they of all people were chosen for Levi and Sasha counters that perhaps they are exceptional. As Eren observes Armin catching Sasha stealing bread he thinks back to his days with the old Special Operations Squad.

Mikasa and the rest of Levi’s squad listen in on the meeting about their objectives

Levi summons his squad along with Nifa, Keiji, Moblit Berner, Hange, and a goggled member of her squad to a meeting. After commenting on their poor cleaning job he reveals that their main objective of retaking Wall Maria has not changed. Levi considers this objectives more important than anything, even the lives of the people at the meeting. He calls on Armin to explain his theory on sealing the wall. Armin elaborates that since the walls are made of Titans it would require less than a days work if they could use a hardened Titans’ body. Armin is pessimistic about the plan but Levi reassures him that it all rests on Eren, who is willing to try. Levi asks Hange to prepare an experiment for Eren to which she replies that it is her duty until she dies. She also believes that retaking the wall is the most important objective and therefore wants to quickly study Eren’s hardening abilities, along with his potential to control Titans. She does however want Eren to keep a low profile and explains this decision by saying that Minister Nick is dead, much to the shock of those present. She tells them that he was found dead this morning and she highly suspects that he was murdered.

She tells the story of how she and Moblit arrived at the scene and after seeing Nick’s corpse were stopped by two First Interior Squad Military Police members. She observed the knuckles of the leader, Djel Sannes, and concluded that he likely killed Nick. She is extremely worried that the First Interior squad was used and blames herself for his death. As Armin wonders why they tortured Nick, Levi explains that the probably wanted information about Eren and Historia. Hange is worried that Nick gave away their location but Levi finds this doubtful since he had all his fingernails ripped out, and most people would take after only having one removed. Levi offers Hange the choice of dealing with this interior business or going to seal wall Maria. Hange responds that she intends to do both and rationalizes this by saying it is the same option Erwin would choose.

As the meeting concludes, Connie tells Eren that he didn’t understand half of what was said. He is angry at Ymir for laughing about the Beast Titan transforming the people of Connie’s village into Titans. Historia rebuffs his comments by claiming that Ymir was trying to protect his damaged mind. At another meeting with Levi’s squad Historia tells the truth about her life. She was born on a farm in Wall Sheena to noble Rod Reiss and spent most of her time doing chores. Her mother was always reading books and would occasionally go to the city dressed well, implying that she was a prostitute. After she learned to read and write, Historia noticed how lonely she was due to the fact that no one ever spoke to her and she never left the farm. She once embraced her mother but was violently thrown off and heard her mother say that she wished she had the courage to kill Historia. Then, several days after Wall Maria fell Rod Reiss came to the farm with her mother and after introducing himself as her father, said that she would be living with him from now on. The trio was then surrounded by the First Interior Squad who captured Historia’s mother and asked Rod Reiss if he had any connection to these two people. Both him and her mother denied any relation so one member placed her mother on the ground and put a knife to her throat. As she wished that Historia had never been born she had her throat slit and is killed. As the same man approached Historia to kill her, Rod Reiss told her that Krista Lenz was her new name and she was never allowed to talk about what happened here.

Mikasa and Levi prepare to save Jean and Armin from their kidnappers

Mikasa and the rest of Levi’s squad are all observing Hange’s experiment on Eren. During his first transformation Hange realizes that he is unable to harden his skin like the Female Titan. She then decides to run intelligence tests, which went well except that Eren can’t talk due to the wrong mouth structure. One hour after transforming while Eren is writing about his father he suddenly exits his Titan form, and then, after resting 30 minutes he transforms again. This second Titan is only 13 m as opposed to Eren’s usual 15 m and is unable to follow commands. The third transformations is only 10 m tall and is missing flesh, along with Eren being fused with it much harder than before. As Hange shouts that he is the hope of humanity, Levi notices the defects before Mikasa jump down to cut Eren out. Levi ponders about disciplining her for acting on her own but decides against it since they are clearly done with the tests. As Hange pulls Eren from his Titan she notices how hot it is and his deformed state. As she seemingly cares more about the experiment and documenting Eren, Mikasa shows extreme concern as Moblit asks where Hange’s humanity is. Mikasa finally cuts Eren out and Hange apologizes while officially ending the experiment. While Jean confirms his suspicion that Eren couldn’t do this, Levi orders Historia to sit with Eren who is unconscious and being consoled by Mikasa and Hange. Hange is worried as she is sure that the smoke from the Titan’s body will notify anyone near.

One day later, Eren awakes from his sleep and since he can’t remember anything about the experiment he is filled in by Hange. Levi harshly blames Eren for there current situation and over Mikasa’s defence, he admits that while he is mean complaining is part of the process. As Levi begins to elaborate about the walls being awful and their being true freedom outside, Hange interrupts and concludes that they learned Eren can’t harden along with other information which makes this experiment a success. As Eren appears to be having a headache Mikasa tells him not to push himself due to his weak state. Hange then moves on and says the only option left is to investigate the Church of the Walls. She is curious why the King doesn’t have access to this information but rather the Reiss family does. She ends this bedside meeting by saying that Erwin has gone to the capital and will surely learn something. Later, Levi burns Erwin’s orders after having his squad read them. They leave just as men come to burn their hideout with Levi coyly remarking that they are underestimating him. As they arrive in Trost and notice it’s destroyed state, several citizens come up to Levi and accuse the Survey Corps of not doing enough. They angrily wonder why Levi gets to eat while they starve. After starting a fight a cart comes rushing through and kidnaps Jean and Armin, who are disguised as Eren and Historia. Mikasa and the others trail them to a warehouse and after she inquires about Levi’s injured ankle, he replies that he can move it and that is good enough.

Mikasa and Levi attack Dimo Reeves and his crew

As the kidnappers apparent boss

confirms with his men that they are Eren and Krista, he enters the room and decides to start by stripping them of everything they have. In mid-sentence Mikasa appears from behind a crate and cracks one of the kidnappers in the head with his knee while at the same time Levi throws one to the ground. Mikasa then tackles their leader as Jean and Armin escape from their ropes and use them to tie up the three men. After confirming with Connie that there are no more, the leader pulls a gun out but is stopped thanks to an arrow from Sasha. Levi begins his interrogation by asking the leader what his role is and he falsely claims to just be the chauffeur. Mikasa recognizes him as Dimo Reeves, the president of a merchant company who was blocking the escape from Trost district after it was breached. As Dimo begrudgingly admits who he is Levi decides to take him somewhere else to talk. At that moment Armin is fixing a gag on one of the men who acts very perverted, which results in Jean taking over due to Armin’s nervousness.

On top of the Wall Levi asks where they are and Dimo calls Trost him home town while also admitting that he loves this place. Levi notices the irony that while this place was humanity’s first win against the Titans, only Eren in his Titan form could achieve this; humanity can not compete with Titans. Levi continues his lecture about the importance of Eren and how horrible it would be if he was taken away, but is cut off by Dimo who claims to be too old for a sermon. Levi then inquires about Dimo’s negotiation with the First Interior Squad, but learns that Dimo is only following orders. Dimo goes on to say that due to this failure his company, men, and even himself will all be destroyed. He calls the First Interior Squad total morons for picking a fight with the Survey Corps and notes that Mikasa alone was strong enough to take out himself and all his men. Levi agrees but asks if Dimo is going to let himself be killed by those morons and he replies that they have absolute authority, so yes. Dimo refuses to fight because then even more of his men will die but Levi notes that they will die either way. He further elaborates that Trost is on the verge of collapse but still there are people here thanks to the Reeves company. Without Reeves company the town will certainly die which Dimo blames on Levi for not handing over Eren and Krista. Shockingly, Levi agrees to that very thing much to the objection of everyone present, especially Mikasa. Levi stipulates three conditions for this agreement: Reeves company joins the Survey Corps against the government, they trust them fully, and they must give the Survey Corps preference on luxury goods. Sasha blurts out that she loves these conditions even though Mikasa is visibly worried. Dimo chuckles that while Levi is pretty greedy he likes him. He agrees to the deal by shaking Levi’s hand. Reeves lures Djel Sannes and his partner Ralph into the arms of the Survey Corps by telling them he has Eren and Krista. Mikasa and the rest of Levi’s squad relocate to a remote cabin where Sannes is now being tortured himself, by Levi and Hange.[124]

Mikasa and the rest of the Special Operations Squad listen in solitude to Djel Sannes tortured cries

Mikasa and the rest of Levi’s squad, minus the captain, sit around a table and hear the tortured screams of Djel Sannes in the basement. Jean laments that he expected to fight Titans when he joined the Survey Corps, not humans. As he wonders why they are staining their hands in this manner, Eren responds that the only other alternative is for humanity to die to the Titans. Since Erwin’s goal is to overthrow the government, Eren concludes that this is just the beginning. Jean notes that failure will almost certainly led to execution. Armin theorizes that since they are trying to change a 100 year old system their best chance of success would be to get the population on their side. His idea is to create some sort of tragedy and then blame it on the government. This plan draws considerable worry from everyone present so Armin nervously stutters that he was just kidding. Jean asks if Armin was corrupted due to the pervert at the warehouse and Mikasa says that she does not remember raising him this way. Armin continues that they have to kill their current enemies because they have different ideas. He concludes by depressingly announcing that they are not good guys anymore

«This world is a very cruel place. But it is also very beautiful.»

Mikasa is the adoptive sister of Eren and mutual childhood friend of Armin. A former resident of the rural outskirts of Shinganshina in the interior of Wall Maria, Mikasa is adopted by Dr. Grisha Yeager after her mother and father are murdered by human traffickers. Mikasa hides her emotions but cares deeply for Eren — never hesitating to cry with tears of joy or despair depending on what happens to him. She shares an unbreakable bond with Eren following events in their past, and his mother requesting that she protect him made her even more overly protective of him than she was beforehand. She is very physically strong and physically skilled. Her dream in life is to live a peaceful life in the walls with Eren. She enrolls in military training, ranking 1st on her class, and later joins the Survey Corps because Eren does. Noticeable even during her training days, Mikasa comes to be known as an exceedingly capable and swift soldier, and a force to be reckoned with on her own.

Discovering several traitors hiding in their midst, Mikasa reaffirms her mission to protect Eren. With Humanity’s Strongest sidelined by an injury, she is forced to step up and take to the front lines to protect Eren. While facing the traitors, she realizes her own attachment to comrades may impede her mission and is deeply shaken by her failure. This leads to her becoming more ruthless, even willing to cut down her own comrades if they should prove an obstacle. She is promoted into the second incarnation of the Special Operations Squad, and appears to have become Levi’s new second in command.

Four years later, Mikasa makes her return fighting on the frontlines against the forces of Marley alongside Eren and the Survey Corps.

     A — C

  • The Ace: Played with. Mikasa excels at pretty much everything, already being just as good if not better with the 3DM Gear than just about everybody else in the military right after graduating from basic training; In fact, the only person shown to be better than her with the 3DM gear is fellow Ace and undisputed World’s Strongest Man, Levi. She’s also good at combat in general, as Word of God claims that she managed to fight Annie to a standstill, something not even close-combat specialist Eren could do. Keith Shadis considers her a «genius» and notes that she was exemplary at every possible subject the military could train her in. Furthermore, she also ranked higher than Reiner, Annie, and Bertolt despite the fact that the three of them already had extensive military training before they even got to the Walls. However, Eren later reveals that her strength and agility may be artificial.
  • Action Duo: Increasingly so with Levi, to the point he basically treats her like a right hand man in combat.
  • Action Girl: Very, very much so. Mikasa is stated to be as deadly as one hundred soldiers by herself.
  • Actually Pretty Funny: The first thing Historia does after being crowned Queen is punch Levi in the face and then dare him to do something about it. Everyone present just stares in shock… except for Mikasa, who can be seen in the background with a satisfied smirk on her face (guess she was glad that someone finally did it, though she probably wanted the honor herself).
  • Adaptational Attractiveness: Downplayed. While Mikasa is considered beautiful in both the anime and the manga, the anime emphasizes her attractiveness more.
  • Adaptational Curves: As part of her Adaptational Attractiveness, Mikasa — who is initially drawn as being flat-chested in the manga, as illustrations of her in a sports-bra and a magical girl costume demonstrate — is given a noticeable bust in the anime, as displayed in the second opening and a bonus episode where she does exercises.
  • Adaptation Distillation: Played with. In the anime, Mikasa’s characterization and dialogue is considerably more centered around her relationship with Eren, and less around her interactions with her 104th teammates. One of the aspects that define Mikasa’s characterization progress in the manga involves the gradual reduction of her protectiveness of Eren, which is less pronounced in the adaptation. However, due to the changes of the Uprising Arc in the anime, her involvement differed from her previous characterization, and albeit it was also different from the original source, it was more akin to how she behaves in the manga, meaning, more playful and appreciative towards her teammates.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Her iconic scarf is red in the anime, but black in the manga.
  • Adaptation Expansion: The last few episodes gives her some scenes with Eren that weren’t in the manga.
  • Alas, Poor Yorick: Holds Eren’s severed head in her hands in order to kiss him goodbye.
  • All Your Powers Combined: Invoked. Eren tells Mikasa that her strength and combat capabilities may not derive out of her own merits, but rather, that she inherited the combat experience of all the Ackermans in her bloodline, and that her strength comes from the power of the Titans, all the while he tells her that she’s just a conduit, meritless and worthless.
  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: She’s beautiful, stoic, aloof, and stands out as the only main female character with black hair.
  • Always Save the Girl: Gender-inverted. Mikasa’s first priority will always be Eren’s safety, to the point where the latter finds it annoying.
  • Amazonian Beauty: Despite her overall slim and feminine build, she’s insanely toned and ripped under her uniform, sporting Bruce Lee muscles. While you don’t get to see much of her muscularity in the actual series, some official illustrations have her in sports wear to show off her physique.
  • Ambiguous Situation: In Chapter 112, Eren claims that Mikasa’s devotion to him is simply biological programming that all Ackermans have as a result of their clan being tampered with. He cruelly compares her to livestock, stating that the real Mikasa died on the night they met and since then, she has merely been controlled by her clan’s need to serve a master. While Mikasa is rendered speechless and heartbroken, it remains ambiguous at best as to how much of this is the truth. The secrets of the Ackerman clan died with Kenny Ackerman, leaving very little concrete information behind for Mikasa and Levi to know about themselves.
    • Chapter 130 confirms that Eren was lying; Mikasa’s devotion to him has nothing to do with her Ackerman heritage.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: To Eren, because of her insistence on accompanying him everywhere.
  • The Anti-Nihilist: She has shades of this, she realizes how crappy the world is, but fights because she has something to cling to: Eren.
  • Babies Ever After: Chapter 139.5 reveals that Mikasa eventually got married and had children, but never stopped mourning Eren and visited his grave until the day she died.
  • Badass Boast: Several.
    • «I am strong. Stronger than any of you.»
    • Gives a chilling one during a standoff with a bunch of soldiers when they threaten to execute Eren.

Mikasa: My specialty… involves flesh… and the lacerating thereof. You just draw close enough, and I’ll be happy to demonstrate. Should anyone wish to experience my technique… by all means, feel free to come this way.

    • Also to a belligerent businessman being difficult during the evacuation, threatening that she could kill him and not bat an eye.
  • Badass Creed: Though only uttered once or twice, she lives by what Eren said to her at their first meeting.

    Mikasa: If I can’t, I die. But if I win, I live. I can’t win unless I fight.

  • Badass Family: The Ackerman family possess a special trait, granting them incredible strength and skill once awakened. This trait led to them being driven out of Central, with Mikasa’s father going into hiding. Mikasa awakened her power to protect Eren.
  • Barefoot Captives: When she was kidnapped into bondage because of her rare Asian heritage (half-blood; her fully Asian mother was the target but one of the attackers accidentally killed her), her captors took her shoes away to discourage trying to run. It didn’t stop her from fighting back and winning.
  • Beauty Equals Goodness: Described as beautiful by other characters, and firmly on the heroic side.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Her unwavering loyalty and devotion towards Eren stems from the day that he rescued her by ruthlessly murdering a group of human traffickers who killed her biological mother and father.
    • Played with/Subverted. According to Eren, the Ackerman clan was bio-engineered to serve a master. He claims that because he saved her, she instinctively recognized him as her «master» and is unable to resist protecting him. That she reacts by holding Armin back the first time he lunges at Eren is used as further evidence that she is a slave programmed to obey Eren. Whether this is the entire truth or not, Mikasa is left shaken and doubting herself.
  • Betty and Veronica:
    • She’s portrayed as the Betty in official parodies, with Annie as the Veronica and Eren as a clueless Archie. It’s ambiguous whether or not such a dynamic existed in the main canon or not.
    • In canon this trope more closely applies to her and Historia, due to them being the two female characters closest to Eren in the story, with Mikasa serving as the Betty to Historia’s Veronica.
  • Big Damn Heroes: She’s rather prone to this.
    • In Episode 22, she manages to save Dieter in the nick of time just before a Titan puts him in his mouth.
    • She appears at the head of a group of reinforcements at Castle Utgard, coming out of nowhere to kill a Titan just before it grabs one of her comrades.
    • A short time later, she leaps to Eren’s defense just before Reiner tries to kidnap him, severing one of his arms and stabbing the other, as well as slicing into the nearby Bertolt’s neck and right hand.
    • After not appearing in the story for almost a year in Real Life, the very first thing she does upon returning is blast the War-Hammer Titan right on its nape with several thunder-spears right as it’s about to kill Eren (albeit in an attack she and Eren apparently coordinated).
  • The Big Girl: Despite her smaller stature, Mikasa is looked up to and relied on as the very best combatant amongst the trainees.
  • Bifauxnen: After the timeskip, she takes up this aesthetic.
  • Big Sister Instinct: She is this towards Eren in spades, though they’re the same age.
    • And, to a lesser extent, she has this attitude towards Armin as well.
  • Blatant Lies: Provides some comedy to cover for Eren twice. First «Sasha farted» in boot camp then when her squadmates ask her exactly happened when Eren lost control during his second Titan-shift and attacked her, punching in his own face in the process, she claims he was swatting a fly. In a completely straight face and tone.
  • Bodyguard Crush: This is definitely the case between her and Eren.
  • Bodyguarding a Badass: Her entire reason for joining the military is to protect Eren. Who is revealed later to be a Titan Shifter, and badass by himself. Even with that development, she is still more competent than him.
  • Boyish Short Hair: She cuts her hair after Eren tells her it may get in the way of her training. It contributes to her tough Action Girl image. After the four-year timeskip, she cuts her hair even shorter so that it bears a striking resemblance to Eren’s old hairstyle.
  • Brains and Brawn: The brawn to Armin’s brains. Both are in truth very smart (although Armin probably wins), but while Mikasa is extremely strong physically, Armin isn’t very muscular and essentially fights using his intelligence.
  • Break the Cutie:
    • When she was younger, she seemed to be an average nine-year-old instead of the stoic badass we know today. Then, her parents were killed in front of her and she was kidnapped. But that was not what broke her; after Eren killed two of the kidnappers, the third just came into the room and almost killed Eren. As Eren almost died, she finally broke, realizing how messed up the world was. And then her adoptive mother was killed one year later, and her adoptive father disappeared somewhere unknown, leaving her and Eren all alone to recover from the Titan attack.
    • She suffers from this trope again upon hearing that Eren was killed during the Battle of Trost.
    • She gets hit with it again after learning about the «Curse of Ymir» that fates all the Titan Shifters to die 13 years after getting their powers — or in other words that, barring her getting killed first in the immediate future, Eren and Armin are both guaranteed to die before her and there’s nothing she can do about it.
    • Eren himself breaks her upon revealing that her devotion to him may be nothing more than the result of tampering done with her bloodline long ago and not really her «true self», calling her entire life’s motivations into question. Not only that, but he compares her to a slave or cattle and tells her that he’s always hated her, sealing the heartbreak.
  • Broken Ace: The second best fighter, including the Titan Shifters, beaten only by Levi. However, she only became so skilled after the trauma caused by the death of her parents, both biological and adoptive. In her eyes, Eren is all she has left in the world, and she must protect him at all costs.
  • Broken Bird: Once upon a time she was just a normal little girl. Nowadays, she rarely ever smiles.
  • Broken Tears:
    • She sheds tears uncontrollably, begging and pleading for Armin‘s life before finally, tragically accepting it.
    • When she learns after retaking Wall Maria about the Titan Shifter’s — and therefore Eren and Armin’s — limited life-spans, she looks absolutely horrified with silent tears running down her face, shortly going into such a severe state of depression that she barely even eats.
    • With Armin, as they sit aside Sasha’s lifeless body, having been shot in the chest just minutes before by Gabi.
    • Eren not only rejecting her feelings but comparing her devotion to him to that of a slave (which, unfortunately, has literal implications due to experiments done on her bloodline long ago) and expressing that he’s «always hated her» drives her to tears.
  • Big Brother Worship: In the eyes of Mikasa, Eren is the greatest person in the world.
    • Gets called on this several times by characters (most notably Jean in Episode 16) when it interferes with her normally rational thinking. Make no mistake, as awesome and useful as Eren is, she can be almost fanatical about him to the point where it can cause major problems if someone doesn’t snap her out of it.
    • In fact, Eren himself has called her out on this early in the series for caring more for him than the human race.
  • Brutal Honesty: She cares for her friends, but she doesn’t hesitate to call them out if she thinks they’re in the wrong.
  • But Not Too Foreign: She is half-Asian, being a descendant of the Hizuru clan on her mother’s side.
  • Byronic Heroine: She joined the Survey Corps only because of Eren, who is everything to her. She has a tragic past and will kill anyone who threatens Eren, be they foe or former friends.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: In Chapter 123, Eren outright asks Mikasa what he means to her. She’s lost for words for a bit until she says he’s family. She also happens to be blushing.
  • Catchphrase:
    • «This world is a cruel place».
    • With the occasional addition of «But it is also beautiful.»
  • The Champion: Towards Eren. She’s frequently called out on taking her «Protect Eren above all else» devotion too far.
  • Character Development: Not necessarily for the better — which is not a bad thing on its own. Mikasa’s heart has noticeably hardened since Trost, being much less willing to spare others where it concerns Eren and being willing to kill anyone that threatens him, including people who were until that moment her friends. Contrast this with the Titan Shifters, who can’t bring themselves to harm her or their other friends. Thus, she’s become a much more deadly soldier. Another instance of character development is how she rescues Historia before Eren in Chapter 66, though this is most likely because Historia was in far more immediate danger than Eren.
    • Mikasa has also become more trusting of the capability of others over the course of the series. Initially, she would come to the rescue of Eren and the others, sometimes even abandoning her own duties to do so. Late in the series, she has more faith that her friends can handle themselves the same way she can- and without somebody explicitly reminding her to keep her focus on her objective this time.
    • She starts off as a stoic Emotionless Girl, but as the story progresses, she becomes more open with her emotions.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: Has shown WAY more strength than any normal person of her age or size should possess. It’s strongly implied that her childhood trauma somehow shattered her natural mental limiters. Possibly Subverted later on in the series, however. Eren claims that she’s actually a Super Soldier with the literal strength of a Titan manifested in a human body due to experiments done on her bloodline long ago. Levi and Kenny are supposedly the same.
  • The Chosen One: According to Eren in Chapter 139 via a flashback, all he did was to put Mikasa into a situation to help her free Ymir Fritz of her love of Ancient King Fritz. When Armin asks why Mikasa of all people would connect to Ymir, Eren notes he has no idea, only that it is the right call. It is all but stated that her role was in showing Ymir True Love’s Kiss to Eren’s decapitated head.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl:
    • In a flashback chapter where Annie was wrestling with Eren during combat training, Mikasa decides they’re getting too close and throws Reiner at them.
    • Portrayed this way in the official parodies, such as when she looms in the background with swords out when Eren talks to Krista.
    • In Chapter 70, while Eren is praising Krista for her recent actions and helping her carry stuff, Mikasa seems annoyed at how chummy they were. After confronting them, she claims Eren must be tired from all his training, and yanks away the bags he was carrying.
    • She gets visibly upset watching Eren and Historia talking and interrupts their moment.
  • The Coats Are Off: Dramatically drops her traveler cloak and draws her sword when she’s had enough screwing around trying to talk to Annie when it’s clear that she is the Female Titan.
  • Color-Coded Eyes: Her eyes are of a darker shade of grey, just shy of qualifying as black, emphasizing her status as The Stoic.
  • The Comically Serious: Most funny moments involving her revolve around the fact that shes known to hold an absurdly serious and deadpan expression in (almost) any situation, along with the occasional dry quip. See Blatant Lies and Clingy Jealous Girl.
  • The Cynic: She’s not vocal about it like Jean, but her catchphrase is «The world is a cruel place», and it’s easy to see why.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: Her parents’ death has made her The Stoic Emotionless Girl she is today.

     D — L

  • Damsel out of Distress: After her parents are murdered she got kidnapped by their murderers forcing Eren to come and save her, then they attempt to kill Eren and through his encouragement she was able to violently kill her kidnappers, and escape with him. This was the start of her uncanny and nearly unmatched ability to take lives.
  • Dare to Be Badass: What made her the hardened badass she is today.

Mikasa: If you win, you live. If you lose, you die. If you don’t fight, you can’t win!

  • Dark Action Girl: Mikasa actually has some darker shades, too. She develops over the course of the series and obviously holds some strong morals dear to her, but as soon as Eren is in danger she is willing to slice up pretty much anyone, friend or foe without a second thought to protect him. While most others join the Survey Corps to actually fight for mankind, Mikasa couldn’t care less if Eren hadn’t joined.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Saw both her biological parents get killed by human traffickers. Also saw her adoptive mother get eaten by a Titan. And then her adoptive father disappeared as well after turning Eren into a Pure Titan and being subsequently devoured, passing the Attack Titan to him.
  • Death Glare: When Eren is in danger, her expressions turn murderous. If looks could kill, Levi and Bertolt would be six feet under six times over by now.
  • Death Seeker: She has a tendency towards this when/if Eren is believed dead.
  • Declaration of Protection: To Eren, of course.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Toward Levi. Since the court trial, Mikasa has held a bitter grudge against him for his handling of Eren. After Levi is injured while protecting her, Mikasa seeks to make up for her mistake by defeating the Female Titan in his stead. By Chapter 58, she has chosen to completely set aside her personal feelings, understanding how important trusting Levi’s leadership is.
  • Determinator: If Eren is in danger, she will not rest until he is safe again. She did almost give up after she heard from Armin that Eren died, but even then she never stopped struggling and continued fighting a Titan with no gear and only half a blade left.
  • Devil’s Advocate: Invoked and subverted. Mikasa’s pleas to defend Eren from the accusations made by their 104th teammates fall on deaf ears, as Eren’s wildly erratic behavior and liberal carelessness towards their well-being makes them think that he might not be on their side anymore. At the very least, they vow to find out Eren’s true intentions before resorting to having him be eaten.
  • Did Not Get The Guy: Post-timeskip, Mikasa and Eren become enemies when he instigates a military coup against Paradis’ government, with Eren going out of his way to try to make Mikasa hate him. Chapter 130 shows that during the timeskip Zeke spelled out to Eren that Mikasa was in love with him, but Eren — despite being in love with her himself — spurned Mikasa’s affections for the sake of focusing on his mission. In the final battle, Mikasa has a Paths-induced vision of what could have transpired had they eloped, in which Eren tells her to get on with her life after he’s dead, and kills Eren herself before giving him a kiss goodbye. Despite her saying she doesn’t want anyone but him, the epilogue reveals that Mikasa ultimately does get married to another man and start a family, though she never stops mourning Eren.
  • The Dreaded:
    • A heroic example. Even with several dozen soldiers surrounding just her, Eren, and Armin, they’re visibly afraid of her after the Badass Boast she gives as shown above.
    • In a more lighthearted example: The delinquents who ridicule Armin are unfazed when Eren charges toward them. It isn’t until they see Mikasa that they get an Oh, Crap! moment before they pull a Screw This, I’m Outta Here.
    • Both she and Levi are this to Zeke, who has become somewhat fearful of the Ackerman family after Levi nearly killed him with ease, and that Mikasa is only second to him when it comes to Titan-fighting. Memories of what she did during that same battle also cause Reiner to have nightmares.
    • Much like Levi, Mikasa is referred to as The Ackerman by the Warriors during the Battle at Liberio. It seems that Zeke’s loving descriptions of them reached his teammates.
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: In anime Episode 7, Mikasa has this right after she hears of Eren’s supposed death. It happened again in Episode 21, when she witnesses Eren being devoured by the Female Titan.
  • Dying Declaration of Love: Subverted. In Chapter 50/Episode 37, when surrounded by Titans alongside Eren and with seemingly no way out, Mikasa begins happily smiling and crying and thanks him for everything he’s done for her. She blushes and inches closer to his face… but then he abruptly stands up in a last ditch effort to defend her from the Smiling Titan (which miraculously ends up saving their lives when he unknowingly activates the Coordinate on the Titans).
  • Effortless Amazonian Lift: Twice thus far. The first time, she breaks up an argument between Eren and Jean by throwing Eren her shoulder and walking away. In a flashback, she’s shown to have once thrown Reiner at Annie from across the training yard.
  • Emotionless Girl: The stoic type. It’s not that she lacks emotions as she does care for others, she just has trouble showing her emotions, and usually acts aloof. As the story progesses, she starts to lose this trait.
  • Enlightenment Superpower: More mundane than most but still follows a similar path. When confronting the slave traders who kidnapped her, she had an epiphany that led to a higher understanding about the world. This empowered her to feel like she was capable of anything.
  • Everyone Can See It: Her romantic feelings for Eren are pretty obvious to everybody except themselves; Mikasa won’t admit how she feels even in her inner thoughts and Eren is completely unaware since he’s not only dense but also views her as just his adopted-sister. Lampshaded by Levi, who only has to bring it up when her devotion becomes a hindrance in a mission.

Levi:…We all get that you love him, but try not to act crazy.

    Mikasa:I…I was just…(silent)

  • Expository Hairstyle Change: Discussed on the evening of her first day of training. Eren suggests she cut it, to avoid accidents while doing 3D maneuver training and she immediately agrees with the idea. Since then, she’s worn her hair in the same mid-length bob.
  • Face Death with Dignity: She seems serene when she acknowledges that she’s probably going to die at one point, before remembering Eren’s Dare to Be Badass influence from when they met and deciding to fight to her last. She makes it out alive.
  • Fanservice Pack: Mikasa was originally portrayed as having a small bust, but over the course of the manga has become progressively curvier to match her anime design. For once though, this can probably be justified since she’s actually still in the midst of puberty (15 years old) and could just be having her last growth spurts.
  • Fastball Special: Manga only. During the second fight against the Female Titan, it starts climbing up Wall Sina too quickly for the soldiers to chase with 3DM gear alone. In response, Armin has the Rogue Titan launch Mikasa so that she could catch up to the Female Titan in time. In the anime, Mikasa catches up to the Female Titan on her own.
    • Done again during the fight atop the Founding Titan, this time with the Female Titan’s help, who allows Mikasa to grapple to her hand, and then throws her towards the titan that captured Armin.
  • Fatal Flaw: Despite being a near perfect soldier, Mikasa is still susceptible to Eren’s influence and often goes out of her way to protect him to ridiculous lengths which Eren has commented on multiple times and tears her down brutally when he speaks with her outside of his cell.
  • Fate Drives Us Together: Invoked. There’s a significant possibility that Grisha came into contact with her parents and was trying to introduce her to Eren in the first place because «The Owl» Eren Kruger absentmindedly mentioned her name (and Armin’s) and the importance of protecting her. Keep in mind, this happened years before baby Eren, Mikasa and Armin were even born, as Kruger even states that the memory of these children is not his.
    • Confirimed: every Attack Titan carries the memories of his/her predecessors and successors and the ability to move and influence them freely.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Her bond with Eren originates from how, as a child, she was kidnapped by her parents’ murderers and Eren was the first one to track them down. If it weren’t for him, she may not be alive.
  • Foil: To Annie. While both have a cold and stoic demeanor, they foil each other physically and in personality. Mikasa is tall, has dark hair, a quite small nose and small dark eyes, while Annie is short with blond hair, a big aquiline nose and large blue eyes. Mikasa is altruistic, lives for others and, while emotionally repressed, she’s much more instinctive than Annie, who is selfish and uses complex techniques when she fights.
  • Foreshadowing: Their are a couple of moments that foreshadow Mikasa’s status as a by-product of Titan science that Zeke talked about in Chapter 93.
    • During her flashback to her past, when Eren tells her to fight, yellow electricity crackles around her brain right before she kills her would be kidnapper. This is the first indication that her unexplained physical prowess are linked in some way to Titans.
    • During a flashback to her days training in the 104th Mikasa and Annie have a confrontation when the latter pins Eren with one of her locks. Mikasa demands that Annie try that manoeuvre on her but Annie mentions that her techniques are meant to take down humans not beasts. While at the time it seemed like a dig at her rival, Annie’s words hold more weight with the reveal that the Ackerman family is considered a myth in Marley for being a by-product of Titan science. Meaning that Annie’s desire to see if she could best her was likely more genuine then she first let on.
  • Freak Out: She has a bit of a breakdown after Bertolt and Reiner make off with Eren. Her eyes become massive and bloodshot, even by this manga’s standards, and she buries her face in her red scarf.
  • Functional Genre Savvy: After her previous encounter with kidnappers, Mikasa makes sure to double check that there are only three men the second time around.
  • The Gift: Mikasa is described by her instructor as a prodigy of unparalleled talent, with a natural mastery of all subjects. She’s outshined only by Levi, and he’s the legendary World’s Strongest Man.
  • Godzilla Threshold: She gradually begins accepting Eren putting himself in harm’s way for the sake of the mission, especially when he starts turning into a Titan due to Hange’s request for practice. This is because Eren is gradually getting better with his Titan powers.
  • Good Eyes, Evil Eyes: If one pays close attention to her scene as a child where she breaks, she retains her adorable Tareme Eyes and can’t even bring herself to move in her fright; the moment she mentally breaks, she immediately switches to Tsurime Eyes in a Death Glare, breaks the floor boards in her rapid foot transition, and uses that to propel her movement as she closes in and kills the human trafficker in a fit of rage.
  • Good Is Not Soft: After a length of time spending time aside from Eren and Armin with most of her comrades she made in the 104th Training Corps and Survey Corps especially Historia, Ymir, Jean, Connie, Sasha, Hange and Levi. She comes a long way from being the emotionless girl she once was to a warm caring lady who will value her friends; old or new. But she won’t be merciful to any enemies who she will kill if it’s necessary.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Mikasa also has a small scar below her right eye, which she received after Eren (in his Titan Form) unknowingly attempted to kill her and a piece of shattered rooftop flew up and made a deep cut on her face.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Shows traces of this towards Annie. During a flashback of Annie and Eren training together, they do so in a manner suggesting Annie was flirting with him, only to be interrupted by Mikasa throwing Reiner at them, followed by her asking Annie in a passive aggressive manner if she can’t teach those moves to her as well. Later, she asks Eren if he hesitates to fight Titan!Annie because he has «certain feelings» for her, with a not-so-happy expression on her face.
  • Grievous Harm with a Body: A flashback in Chapter 44 shows that during one of Eren and Annie’s training sessions, she got tired of all the subtext and broke them up by throwing Reiner at them. Annie got out of the way in time; Eren didn’t.
  • Happily Adopted: Deeply attached to Eren’s family, as they took her in after her own died and treated her as their own. After Carla’s death and Grisha’s disappearance, she clings to Eren because he’s the only one left.
  • Head Butting Heroes: In Season 1 Eren frequently butts heads with her for being her annoying Big Sister Instinct towards him.
  • He Is Not My Boyfriend: When someone calls Eren her boyfriend, she just says he is just family, but not without a blush.
  • Heroic BSoD: When she finds out that Eren is dead, she acts cool about it, but Armin realizes she is not thinking calmly and uses up her gas. She more or less gives up on life, till she remembers Eren’s words and decided to live on.
    • She has another brief one when the Female Titan seemingly swallowed Eren whole.
    • She has one more after Eren is kidnapped by his fellow Titan Shifters in Chapter 45. A Rousing Speech from Hannes pulls her out of it.
    • Has yet another one in Chapter 50, after watching Hannes get killed by the Titan that killed Carla five years ago. Mikasa looks at the sad situation of the military’s desperate struggle in trying to survive against the Titans, she actually gives up on living and thanks Eren for all he has done for her.
    • Yet another one, complete with tears of despair, upon learning that Titan Shifters only live 13 years after getting their powers, meaning that Eren and Armin will die of «natural causes» relatively soon and there is seemingly nothing that can prevent this.
    • Mikasa suffers this yet again, when Eren claims that her heritage as an Ackerman makes her a slave, programmed to protect him and barely even a person anymore. He follows this up by stating that he has always hated her, ever since they were children.
  • Heroic Build: As shown here.
  • Identical Stranger: To the girl Eren dreams about in the beginning of the manga, only that said girl has shorter hair than Mikasa had when she woke up Eren from the interior of Wall Maria (keep in mind, the girl was Adapted Out in the anime).
  • Idol Singer: Parodied in the volume 9 fake preview, which features her alter-ego «Mikarin«.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: She joined the army only because of Eren. She wanted to have a peaceful life.
  • Ineffectual Loner: Averted, as is the case with fellow ace Levi, she has superb ratings in everything combat-related but below-average Teamwork, though not as low as Levi’s. She will work with her fellow soldiers when the plan calls for it (especially one of Armin’s plans) but she’s most often seen taking out Titans solo without backup and does it rather effectively.
  • I Owe You My Life: Part of her devotion to Eren comes from how he saved her from human traffickers, taught her how to survive, and has become the only family or anchor she has left.
  • Irony: Years after Eren berated her for wearing her hair too long (claiming it would get in the way during combat), they’ve essentially ended up swapping their original hairstyles.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She is a very ruthless fighter and is willing to kill anyone — regardless of whether they are her friends or enemies — if they harm Eren. However, she does this for the sake of Eren’s safety, and has a soft spot towards her close allies — especially Armin.
  • Kid Hero: One of the strongest human characters in the series and yet she’s still only 15.
  • Kill the Ones You Love: In the end, despite resisting it all throughout the battle with him, Mikasa becomes the only one who can kill Eren and in the series penultimate chapter she does exactly that, decapitating the man she loves before he can unleash any more carnage. In fact, that chapter has its primary conflict seem to be her working up the courage to go through with it.
  • Knight Templar Big Brother: Gender inverted example: Mikasa is even willing to fight her fellow soldiers and become an enemy of humanity to protect Eren.
  • Lady of War: She is calm and collected when using her 3D Maneuver Gear, cutting down Titans with grace and deadly speed, in contrast to Eren.
  • The Lancer: Serves as a strong contrast to Eren, Eren doesn’t have any significant combat talent, whereas Mikasa is a natural warrior. Eren has an explosive personality, while Mikasa is cold and (mostly) unfeeling. Eren starts off caring for others, whereas Mikasa only cares about Eren. Later on Mikasa starts becoming a warmer person, whereas Eren becomes colder. It’s even in minor things, like their hairstyles, which they basically swap later on.
  • Last Kiss: With Eren, shortly after she sorrowfully beheads him.
  • Last of Her Kind: The last (half) Asian in Paradis Island.
  • Last-Second Chance: She surprisingly enough offers one to Bertolt, after his Villainous BSoD. Her expression, when he refuses, is murderous.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: She acts in a uncharacteristically rash manner whenever Eren is in danger. After the Female Titan kidnaps him and slaughters a great many survey corpsmen on the expedition outside the walls, Mikasa tries to slice her nape to kill her for good, despite Levi’s explicit warning not to do so. She certainly would have died if the World’s Strongest Man hadn’t reacted quick enough to save her, taking a debilitating injury in the process.
    • This doesn’t exactly improve in the second battle with the Female Titan, at least in the anime. While she certainly displays skill the other soldiers don’t (they keep dying), she ends up getting knocked unconscious by the Female Titan twice. It’s a wonder she’s alive.
  • Like Brother and Sister: Her relationship with Armin. Ironically, she gets along with him more than Eren.
  • Line in the Sand: When Jean, Connie, and Sasha begin to question their reason for fighting, Mikasa states that if they wish to opt out, now is the time.
  • Little Miss Badass: As a child, she killed one of the men who killed her parents and kidnapped her.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: She almost gives up on life when Armin tells her that Eren was eaten by a Titan, only training and conditioning prevents her from being killed without a fight.
  • Long-Lost Relative: She comes from the same bloodline as Levi and Kenny. They all share the surname, Ackerman, something Mikasa has only recently been made aware of.
  • The Lost Lenore: During the battle of Trost, the then-considered-dead Eren becomes this for Mikasa, as she unconsciously fights off a Titan in spite of having suicidal thoughts. Her reason to fight and live? To remember Eren.
  • Loving Bully: She might love Eren with all her heart, but she’s not above kicking his ass if it needs to be kicked when he gets too overbearing. Curiously, her heavy hand is one of the few things that can defuse his angry tirades.

     M — T

  • Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: Chapter 112 brought a significant quandary as per Mikasa’s characterization, as it’s not quite known how much of her actions throughout most of her life were due to her free will, or whether they were brought along by her Ackerman conditioning. This put a proverbial wedge on what constitutes the fundamental source of her powers, her inner strength and her feelings of affection, and as Eren states, Mikasa «died» fighting the human traffickers who killed her parents; the person that followed is just an Ackerman «slave» bound to him, a creature who lacks free will. All of this was later revealed to have been a lie concocted by Eren to push Mikasa away to prevent any interference from her in his genocidal campaign against the rest of Humanity.
  • Meaningful Name: She is named after IJN Mikasa, Japanese pre-dreadnaught battleship that served as flagship of Imperial Japanese Navy fleet in Russo-Japanese War, in which it contributed to the defeat of then thought to invincible Russian Baltic fleet. It is also the only remaining pre-dreadnaught battleship in existence. The name was chosen by Hajime Isayama based on his theory that series with heroine named after warships will be a hit.
    • Her surname doesn’t lack in the symbolism department either. Ackerman is a family name that references someone who would till the fields, and collect the crops that grew from them. Ergo, a reaper.
  • Messy Hair: In Chapter 87, she wakes up to Eren’s screams with a gravity-defying case of bed hair, which can be justified by it being matted from going unwashed due to their imprisonment. As it’s not covering the sides of her face, she looks markedly girlier and almost Off-Model.
  • Mirror Character:
    • Despite her stoicism contrasting sharply with Eren’s high-running passions, she falls prey to the same flaws at critical moments that he does when her buttons are pushed. She simply loses all thought and composure and focuses on killing.
    • From Historia, as they are both girls whom Eren gave a reason to live after a great emotional trauma. Mikasa even realizes this, demonstrating that she’s not OK with Historia and Eren getting too chummy with each other after she’s crowned Queen of the Walls.
  • Mixed Ancestry is Attractive: Asian people are believed by the characters to have been wiped out, and Mikasa (half-Japanese and half-Germanic white) is thought to be the last person of Asian descent alive. This gives her a unique phenotype, with straight dark hair and almond-shaped eyes. She is considered beautiful, with Jean in particular falling in Love at First Sight and extolling her features.
  • More than Mind Control: Invoked and played with. In Chapter 112, Eren states that Mikasa’s attachment to him is artificial in nature and that she’s conditioned to defend him due to her Ackerman blood. He points to her trying to stop the fight between him and Armin as evidence of his claims, leaving Mikasa shaken and terrified. However, the reliability of these claims is ambiguous at best with very little concrete information about the Ackerman Clan. What little is known about them is that they were nearly exterminated for rebelling against the First King, their master — a fact Kenny’s grandfather once revealed to him. Eren also claims Mikasa’s headaches are the result of resisting her conditioning, and that Ackermans gain their power in response to a master. Kenny and Levi contradict these claims, as both possessed their superior abilities prior to meeting Uri and Erwin, and neither was shown to suffer headaches like Mikasa. As such, the accuracy of Eren’s words is…..questionable.
    • As of Chapter 130, its confirmed that Eren was lying about the Ackermans’ subservient nature and that Mikasa’s devotion to Eren was based purely on her love for him.
  • Motive Misidentification: Invoked. Given what has been revealed about the Ackerman bloodline, this brings some possible ulterior motives as to why Grisha Yeager made an acquaintance with the Ackermans and eventually brought Mikasa into his household, other than out of the kindness of his heart. To complicate matters even further, Kruger left Grisha an extremely cryptic warning about saving Mikasa and Armin years before the two were even born prior to Grisha gaining the Attack Titan and entering the Walls, possibly shedding some light on why he formed an eventual acquaintance with her family.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Not in the material direct but Mikasa has been shown posing in sports bras in concept art and on some of the manga’s volume covers, and the second anime opening provides a generous shot of her cleavage. The second anime OVA also features a completely irrelevant montage of Mikasa’s sweaty workout routine, showing some nice muscle tone.
  • Mundane Utility: As a child, Mikasa used her super-strength to accomplish chores faster and with greater efficiency than Eren.
  • My Beloved Smother: How Eren tends to view her over-protection.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Shows remorse after blinding Reiner with the Thunder Spear.
    • In Chapter 85, she and Eren seem to be going through it after realizing the long-lasting effects of choosing Armin over Erwin will have on their friend, not even considering Armin’s personal feelings on the matter, and in addition that despite Armin’s genius, even he doesn’t know what to do next without Erwin’s command. It hits home for them that it seems everyone thought injecting Erwin was the right choice and Hanji tells them that just because they are willing to accept punishment for going against orders, doesn’t mean that they can do whatever they want and prioritize personal feelings.
  • My Greatest Failure: In Chapter 123, Mikasa comes to see her inability to be honest about her feelings for Eren as this, as she wonders whether or not that would have been enough to convince Eren to not go down the path of destruction he embarked on that culminated in unleashing the Rumbling.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: When saving Armin from Bertolt, she takes the time to try to cleave his head off. This results in him losing an ear (and her losing some dignity) and giving Bertolt an injury with which to transform, which they wanted to prevent.
  • Not Blood Siblings: With Eren. She was adopted by Grisha and Carla after the murder of her biological parents, and she takes Big Sister Instinct to a whole new level. It’s glaringly implied that being his «sister» is not what she’s looking for in their relationship, though, as she’s willing to dedicate her whole life to him while ignoring every other possibility in the way.
  • Not So Stoic:
    • Her general response to Eren being in danger is either panic or murderous fury. This happens to apply to Armin too.
    • She is subconsciously unable to kill Reiner and Bertolt, as she’s shown to be in visible anguish after their treason is found out. Even later, during the Return to Shiganshina, she is in considerable pain after battering Reiner to a pulp with explosive lances.
    • Maintains her deadly composure in battle even after witnessing Eren’s horrific actions in Liberio. This changes when she learns that Sasha has been mortally wounded aboard the blimp; she breaks down completely when her old friend and comrade dies in her arms.
  • Obliviously Beautiful: She doesn’t seem to notice or care that her looks are enough to leave Jean nearly speechless.
  • Oblivious to Love: She doesn’t notice that Jean is head over heels for her.
  • One True Love: Invoked with Eren. She probably loves the guy more than he loves himself.
  • One-Woman Army: Ian comments that «She’s as good by herself as a hundred ordinary soldiers.» She proves that she’s that good against the Military Police, with the anime giving special emphasis on her slaying several of them, one by one, in a matter of moments.
  • Orphan’s Ordeal: Goes through this twice! Her biological parents were murdered by human traffickers who wanted her and her mother, presumably because they were the last Asians known to mankind, and very valuable as a result. However, she still went on to have a happy childhood as Eren’s family adopts her after she’s rescued. Then she witnesses her adoptive mother get eaten by a Titan and her adoptive father disappear to parts unknown.
  • Pillars of Moral Character: A walking example of «gimu» (a life debt). She will do anything to protect Eren, because he saved her when they first met. Further highlighted by the fact that she’s the last living person of Asian descent.
  • Power Copying: In the anime, she has begun adopting Levi’s Spin Attack fighting style after having seen it in action.
  • The Power of Love: A subdued form, in stark contrast to Eren. Most of her badassery is the direct result of her caring for and wanting to protect Eren. It’s also her biggest flaw as her desire to keep Eren safe often causes her to make mistakes and act irrationally.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: A non-fatal example, used just before she kicks Annie down the Wall.

    Mikasa: Annie. Fall.

    • Gives another one much later to Reiner.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: The first time Jean sees her, he’s momentarily struck speechless by her beauty and barely manages to ramble about how she looks different from everyone else and her black hair is «really pretty».
  • Really Royalty Reveal: Invoked and played with. Lady Azumabito states that Mikasa might be part of the old ruling family of the shogunate of Hizuru, who were supposedly close allies to the Kings of Eldia, though it’s implied that she says this in order to endear herself to the Eldians of Paradis. Whether this is true or not remains to be seen.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The calm and collected blue to Eren’s hot-headed red.
  • The Reliable One: Having her on the ranks carries a considerable advantage and morale to her teammates, only that they wish she held them in the same regard as Eren. In later chapters, she has started to become more of a team player.
  • The Rival: Appeared to have had this dynamic with Annie during their trainee days. Chapter 44 offers of flashback where the two prepare to square off in a training fight, to which Word of God later confirmed they had been so equally matched the instructor had to interfere and call it a tie. Of course, once Annie is outed as The Mole, this rivalry quickly turns into homicidal-hatred.
  • Roaring Rampage of Rescue: She does this whenever something happens to Eren, and it is never portrayed as a healthy or positive thing. Each time, her actions place her or others into considerable danger.
    • At Trost, she taunts the disheartened Trainees into following her into battle and then proceeds to completely exhaust her supply of gas, leaving herself helpless and the other Trainees abandoned until Jean takes charge. All because she thought Eren had been killed, and was attempting to avoid dealing with it through taking action.
    • During the Female Titan arc, when the Female Titan successfully captures Eren, she goes in pursuit. She ignores Levi’s warning that they won’t be able to kill the Female Titan, and her recklessness results in Levi injuring his ankle sidelining Humanity’s Strongest for an arc.
    • She goes on one again when Eren is kidnapped by Reiner and Bertolt, letting nothing stand in her way. This leads to her threatening Historia Reiss, making it clear she will kill ANYONE that gets between her and saving Eren. She was willing to not only turn on her True Companions, but also risk the Survey Corps’ best chance of uncovering the Government Conspiracy.
    • Not so much a rampage, but Mikasa’s intentions in 83 have been made clear: Levi, hand over that serum or face a distraught Mikasa with a blade in her hand. This was brought on by Levi callously choosing Erwin over Armin when both lives need saving and he’d already said he would transform Armin.
  • Retired Badass: After Eren’s death she retries from military, got married and became a housewife.
  • Running Gag: The official 4-koma likes to poke fun at her weight, with first Armin and later Levi dropping her after realizing she’s too heavy to carry. Doing so causes an explosion when she lands. This seems to be based on how dense muscle-mass makes one weigh more — and between her washboard abs and toned limbs, muscles are definitely something she doesn’t lack for.
  • Satellite Character: Her motives and actions revolve solely around Eren. The Battle of Trost briefly explores this dynamic, showing how Mikasa would function without Eren; that is, not very well.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: A sentimental keepsake from when she first met Eren and became part of his family. He gives it to her after she says she’s cold, having just rescued her from the human traffickers. She hasn’t taken it off since.
  • Scars are Forever: When the Rogue Titan/Eren attacks her, her cheek is scratched by a piece of debris; she has kept the scar ever since. It makes her look even more badass, if anything.
  • Security Blanket: Said scarf mentioned above. When she is particularly anxious or upset, she’ll nuzzle her nose under it.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: Her instinctive attack of Armin in chapter 112 could have been motivated by the Ackerman servant/master trait, or just the ordinary trauma of having had her loved ones die in front of her. That she instantly feels guilty for it and lets him go implies the latter.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Compared to her adoptive brother, who’s The Berserker, Hot-Blooded, and a Wide-Eyed Idealist.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: She has eyes for no one but Eren. Most of their teammates don’t mind, but they make it clear that they’re not quite as eager to dive face-first into concrete for him as she is.
  • Sparing the Aces: While she’s protecting Eren, who has just exhibited his Titan-shifting abilities, from Weilman (who is trying to get them shot on sight), one of Weilman’s subordinates mentions her status as The Gift in what was either this or genuine fear that she would fight her way out of their situation.
  • Spell My Name with an S: So, translate Mikasa phonetically because it is written in hiragana, or directly use the kanji of the battleship Mikasa? Official material says phonetically, the rest of the fanbase disagree. The Other Wiki compromise by having them both.
  • The Spock: The most outwardly emotionless and calmest fighter among the main trio, able to be decisive in many situations where others would hesitate. However, in regards to Eren, this attitude does not apply at all.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: With Eren. Mikasa loves Eren more than anyone, and wants nothing more than to have a peaceful life with him. Eren is revealed to feel the same way in the final chapter. Unfortunately for the two, circumstances outside of their control constantly keep the two from starting a relationship with each other, and Mikasa is ultimately left with no choice but to kill Eren to save humanity.
  • The Stoic: She’s an Emotionless Girl most of the time, thanks to the trauma she went through witnessing the murder of her parents as a child. She shows little to no emotion on her face, but if it involves Eren… well let’s just say that no one is safe if they get in her way.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: She hides her emotions from others and presents herself as stoic, yet she’s a very loyal person who cares very deeply about Eren.
  • Superpowerful Genetics: Her father was a member of the Ackerman clan, note  and her mother was Asian. Both bloodlines possess the ability to resist the Coordinate ability, and were thus ruthlessly persecuted by the royal family.
  • Super Soldier: Eren claims that her superhuman physical abilities are the result of the Eldian Empire fiddling around with Titan science long ago, accidentally causing the entire Ackerman bloodline to possess the hidden capability to use the strength of the Titans while maintaining a human form. The only catches are that A. They have to be awakened by a traumatic event and B. They have to immediately afterwards recognize an individual as a «host», i.e somebody they have to protect (the reason for this being that the Eldians eventually wanted to force them to protect the King). The rarity of these events is presumably why Mikasa’s father and (likely) Levi’s mother never awakened.
  • Super Strength: One of the reasons why she’s such a powerful fighter is due to her Ackerman bloodline, which grants her inhuman strength, speed, and reflexes following her Traumatic Superpower Awakening. She first demonstrates this as a little kid during the moment where she killed one of her kidnappers — she crushes the hilt of her knife and her first step shatters the wooden floor when she charged him. The Military Police are astonished when they find that her knife went 3 inches through his heart from the back.
  • Sympathetic Murder Backstory: Forced to kill a man, to save herself and Eren. An entire episode is devoted to her backstory, and it’s later used by the Military Police Brigade to suggest she’s dangerous.
  • The Talk: The very last conversation she ever had with her parents. When she asks her mother where babies come from, Mrs. Ackerman passes the buck to her husband… who awkwardly suggests she should ask Dr. Yeager when he arrives. By the time she actually does get to meet him, Mikasa has far more important things to worry about.
  • Tearful Smile: For one of the very few times since childhood, she smiles as she thanks Eren for everything he’s done for her with tears in her eyes. It would be a nice moment, if not for the fact they were surrounded by Titans with no way of defending themselves.
  • Thousand-Yard Stare: As she sees the Titan that killed her adoptive mother five years ago slowly approaching her and Eren in Chapter 49.
    • When she emerges from confinement after having disobeyed orders to save Armin over Erwin, her expression is completely blank, she moves as though lifeless and she barely acknowledges anyone. Considering she’d just beforehand learned that her two best friends and the only people she actually cares about are both destined to die from the «Curse of Yimr» that all Titan Shifters carry, it’s arguably either a miracle or a testament to her strength that she had the will to move at all.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: Exploited Trope in Chapter 112. Eren describes the Ackerman Clan has being biologically programmed to serve an Eldian master, a process that destroys their true self and makes them slaves with no will of their own. Mikasa is left heartbroken and confused, seemingly Eren’s intention for the entire meeting. Having been raised unaware of her clan’s heritage, Mikasa is unaware of any information about the Ackerman Clan that could contradict Eren’s claims.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Mikasa first starts out as cold and distrusting towards anyone besides Eren and Armin which is understandable considering her traumatic experience with her parent’s deaths but over the length of time, she gets to understand most of her comrades especially Historia, Ymir, Sasha, Jean, Connie, Hange and Levi who will secure their loyalty for Eren, this prompts her to open up to them and thinks of them warmly as close friends and is willing to help save them if they are in danger. That said, she won’t reserve her compassion only for those who attempt to harm them.
  • Traumatic Superpower Awakening: She’s only extremely competent at killing because of her seriously screwed up past. It’s heavily implied that the prospect of Eren getting hurt shattered the subconscious physical limiters in her mind and body that changed her from a scared little girl to a better fighter than any human has any right to be. To be more specific, it awakened the superhuman abilities inherent to her bloodline.
  • Troll: Is a very hilariously deadpan version of one in regards to Sasha. The part where she pretended to offer bread to her, only to eat it herself comes to mind.
  • True Companions: Eren, her, and Armin are this.
  • Tuck and Cover: She shields a defenseless Eren in this fashion from an approaching Titan.

     U — Y

  • Unbroken Vigil: Anytime Eren is left unconscious, Mikasa will insist on remaining at his side to watch over him.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Eren, who she views as the last remaining person of importance in her life. She won’t even allow herself be killed just to be able to remember him when she thinks he’s been slain.
  • The Unfettered: Whether it’s protecting Eren or just fighting for something she believes in, Mikasa lets nothing stand in her way, be they Titan or human.
  • The Unreveal:
    • Her supposedly living relatives in Hizuru- the apparently powerful and influential Azumabito clan, according to Kiyomi- do not get the chance to be explored in greater depth before Eren presumably destroyed the entire country during The Rumbling
    • Though the power of the Titans is finally gone from the world by the end of the story, it’s not confirmed one way or the other if Mikasa or Levi still have their infamous enhanced Ackerman abilities, which were originally by-products from the experimentation on Titans. (Although in Levi’s case, his permanent crippling after the final battle would make it a moot point either way.)
  • Untouchable Until Tagged: She can slaughter Titans left and right, but there are times where even Mikasa is caught off guard, and we’re reminded that she’s still human.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Before her biological parents were killed, she was shown to have a wide range of emotions, but now she does not hesitate to kill anyone if she needs to.
  • Watching Troy Burn: While escaping by river, she watched her home being destroyed.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • She’s chewed up by Armin and Connie for spending her gas in an effort to kill herself, though she is ultimately unable to let herself get killed from the mere memory of Eren.
    • She delivers a tearful one to Eren, quietly horrified at his decision to kill civilians, including children.
  • When She Smiles: In Chapter 50, she finally thanks Eren for giving her a reason to live while tearfully smiling at him. This is striking enough to snap Eren out of his Heroic BSoD and defend her from the Smiling Titan.
  • With Us or Against Us: She makes it very clear to Historia that her only consideration is Eren’s safety, and people should either help her or get the hell out of her way. She has no sympathy or mercy for those that get in her way. Their relationship gets better, though, as Mikasa saves Historia first from the collapse of the Reiss Family Chapel before she gets to Eren; though this is most likely due to the fact that Historia was about to die from hitting a rock wall, whereas Eren was still safely bound.
  • Worf Effect: Probably the last person you thought would get hit with this, huh? But yes, when she attacks Bertolt—by surprise, no less!—it’s Mikasa who gets her butt handed to her, not the other way around. This alone is enough to ensure the audience takes Bertolt deadly seriously.
  • World’s Strongest Woman: By the end of the series, with the Titans gone, the Titan Shifters Brought Down to Normal, Eren dead and Levi permanently crippled by his injuries, Mikasa very likely takes this title by virtue of being the last combat-capable-and-experienced Ackerman alive while everyone else is at best just a Badass Normal.
  • Wouldn’t Hurt a Child: She clearly draws a line here, tearing up as she points out to Eren that his actions have killed children.
    • Even more impressively, she refuses to kill Gabi Braun when she is outed as the girl who shot her friend and comrade Sasha to death, and in fact protects Gabi when Sasha’s adopted sister Kaya attempts to do so while in a fit of rage.
  • Yandere: An interesting (as well as a rare heroic) example: Mikasa has been shown to care for Eren to an unhealthy degree, feeling very uncomfortable about him being out of her sight, and she has absolutely no qualms about killing anyone or anything that threatens him. The anime seems to play this up for all it’s worth, with no shortage of scenes that anyone» harming, threatening or even just getting too close to Eren, and anybody who succeeds in hurting, taking or otherwise meaning ill-intent getting them a one-way ticket to her short-list of «future dead people.»
  • You Are Worth Hell: Over and over again, Mikasa has followed Eren into hell and has helped drag him out every time. She’ll even keep herself alive for the sake of remembering him.
