The Porsche Cayenne is a series of mid-size luxury crossover sport utility vehicles manufactured by the German automaker Porsche since 2002 (Type 9PA or E1), with North American sales beginning in 2003. It is the first V8-engined vehicle built by Porsche since 1995, when the Porsche 928 was discontinued. It is also Porsche’s first off-road variant vehicle since its Super and Junior tractors of the 1950s, and the first Porsche with four doors.
The second-generation Cayenne (Type 92A or E2) was unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show in March following an online reveal. The Cayenne shares its platform, body frame, doors and electronics with the similar Volkswagen Touareg and Audi Q7. It received a facelift in 2014 with minor external changes, and introduced a new plug-in E-Hybrid version, with its public launch at the Paris Motor Show.[2] Since 2008, all engines have featured direct injection technology. The third generation (Type PO536) was unveiled in 2017 at Stuttgart.
The Cayenne is the first Porsche assembled outside of Europe, in Kulim, Kedah, Malaysia. Only the base model 3 liter V6 is assembled in Malaysia, while other models are imported from Slovakia.[3]

The Porsche Cayenne entered the market to a mixed reception, but it proved itself to have excellent performance for an SUV and had comparably good handling as well as powerful engines.[6] The lineup initially consisted of the V8-powered Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo. Later in the model cycle, VR6 and diesel-powered versions joined the lineup.
The base model is powered by a VW 3.2-L VR6 engine producing 250 PS (184 kW; 247 hp). The intake manifold is unique to Porsche, but otherwise the engine is largely the same as the VW engine. Acceleration from 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) is 9.1 seconds with the manual transmission and 9.7 seconds with the Tiptronic S.
Facelift Porsche Cayenne (Base model, Australia)
Cayenne S[edit]
Pre–facelift Porsche Cayenne S (Australia)
The S is powered by a 4.5L V8 engine with a dry-sump lubrication system and variable valve timing. It produces 340 hp (254 kW; 345 PS) and 310 lb⋅ft (420 N⋅m) of torque. Acceleration from 0–60 mph (0–97 km/h) takes 6.9 seconds and the top speed is 150 mph (241 km/h).[7]
Introduced only for 2006 (as a pre-GTS concept), the Cayenne S Titanium Edition was a one-year exclusive, limited production SUV featuring a lightweight steel body, featuring an aluminium hood (lighter than the one equipped on the Cayenne S), titanium-painted accented body parts, side lower rocker body panels, Sport-Quad Tip Exhaust chrome tailpipes, 19″ titanium painted alloy wheels, bi-xenon headlights, two-tone interior upholstery, Porsche PCM 2.0 w/ trip computer navigation, MP3 audio and Bose cabin surround sound. Under the hood, improvements included sport-tuned suspension, an aerodynamic body package, low-range transfer case, locking differential and a 6-speed automatic Tiptronic transmission. The Cayenne S Titanium Edition is powered by the same 4.5L V8 engine that powered the Cayenne S — still producing 340 hp (254 kW; 345 PS) and 310 lb⋅ft (420 N⋅m) of torque. Acceleration is even quicker than the regular Cayenne S from 0–60 mph (0–97 km/h) at sub[specify] 6.2 seconds[clarification needed] and the top speed is 150 mph (241 km/h)+.[clarification needed]
Cayenne GTS[edit]
The GTS is powered with a 405 PS (298 kW; 399 hp) 4.8 L V8 and features a sport suspension and 21-inch (533 mm) wheels. It is lighter than the Cayenne S and has an aerodynamic body kit. The Porsche Cayenne GTS has a 0–100 km/h (62 mph) time of 5.7 seconds. A six-speed manual transmission is also offered.[8]
Cayenne Turbo and Turbo S[edit]
Porsche Cayenne Turbo (UK; facelift)
The first-generation Cayenne Turbo has 450 PS (331 kW), and can accelerate from 0–100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.6 seconds.[7] A Turbo S version was built in 2006 to compete with the Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG. The Cayenne Turbo and Turbo S include a low-range case, a locking differential, and height-adjustable, off-road suspension. The Turbo S is powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.5 L V8 that produces 521 PS (383 kW; 514 hp) and 720 N⋅m (530 lb⋅ft) of torque; Acceleration from 0–60 mph (97 km/h) takes 5.0 seconds and the top speed is 167 mph (269 km/h); It features a six-speed automatic Tiptronic transmission.
In 2008 an updated Turbo model, featuring a larger 4.8-L engine, was revealed at the Beijing Auto Show. It produces 500 PS (368 kW; 493 hp) more power, and can accelerate from 0–60 mph (97 km/h) in 4.9 seconds.[9] Also revealed with the new Turbo, was a new 550 hp (410 kW) Turbo S model. Acceleration from 0–60 mph (97 km/h) for that car takes 4.7 seconds and it can be had with optional ceramic composite brakes.
Cayenne Diesel[edit]
Porsche has sold a diesel version of the Cayenne, powered by a 3.0-L V6 VW TDI engine, since February 2009.[10] The engine is rated at 240 PS (177 kW; 237 hp) and 550 N⋅m (410 lb⋅ft) of torque. The car was unveiled at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show.[11] The diesel can accelerate from 0–60 mph (97 km/h) in 8.2 seconds.
Cayenne S Transsyberia[edit]
The Cayenne S Transsyberia was originally a racing vehicle designed for Transsyberia rally, only 26 were built.[12]
The street version was later built to commemorate Porsche’s victory in the Transsyberia rally. It is a variant with the 399 hp (298 kW) direct-inject 4.8-L V8 from the Cayenne GTS. Sales began in January 2009, with a targeted production run of 600 road vehicles worldwide (285 for North America), but far fewer were actually built (102 for USA, 17 for Canada including 3 which were 6spd manual).[13]
Cayenne GTS Porsche Design Edition 3 (2010)[edit]
In May 2009,[14] a limited edition version based on the Cayenne GTS was introduced, designed by Porsche Design Studio and included a Porsche Design chronograph Type P’6612. Production was limited to 1000 units, 100 in the USA.[15]

The second-generation Porsche Cayenne went on sale in April–May 2010 as a 2011 model, with an official debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. In preparation for the unveiling, the Cayenne production facility in Leipzig, Germany, closed in December 2009 to commence factory retooling for the new model, a process that took 2–3 months.[citation needed]
Porsche Cayenne S (Australia; pre-facelift)
The 2011 Porsche Cayenne is larger than its predecessors, but features a more slanted rear window, less upright windshield, a more sloping roofline, door-mounted mirrors, smaller windows at the rear of the vehicle, headlights inspired by the Carrera GT, taillights that extend onto the car’s tailgate, LED daytime running lights and a vastly redesigned interior much like the Panamera.[18] The 2011 Cayenne is almost 250 kg (551 lb) lighter than the previous models due to removing the low-range transfer case making it slightly more fuel efficient than the previous lineup. More use of aluminium and magnesium too helped shave weight.[19] Despite its lower stance, the new vehicle’s off-road capabilities have been retained without compromising the street performance-oriented layout and design.[citation needed] In addition to a diesel offering, a hybrid version is available.[20] Also, model year 2013 — 2016 diesel Porsche Cayennes are included in the Volkswagen emissions scandal.
Standard features of the 2011 Porsche Cayenne include air conditioning with dual-zone climate controls, interior air filter, tilt/telescopic leather-wrapped steering wheel with radio controls, cruise control, leather upholstery, eight-way power front seats, outside-temperature indicator, and universal garage door opener in the base model. The Cayenne S adds a power sunroof and memory for the driver’s seat.[19] The Cayenne GTS added an optional rearview camera, keyless access and start, and memory system. Finally, the most upscale Cayenne Turbo and Turbo S added a navigation system with voice recognition, optional four-zone climate controls, heated rear seats, premium sound system with six-disc CD changer.[21]
The Cayenne’s naturally aspirated and turbocharged V8 engines are shared with the Panamera and have been upgraded for faster acceleration times with more horsepower and torque, as well as more powerful direct-injection technology to improve efficiency. The base Cayenne model Cayenne is tuned to offer 300 hp (224 kW).[citation needed]
The Cayenne comes powered by a 3.6-L VR6 engine producing 300 PS (221 kW; 296 hp), the Cayenne S features the same 4.8-L V8 in the Panamera S models producing 400 PS (294 kW; 395 hp) and the Cayenne Turbo comes with Panamera Turbo’s 4.8 L twin turbo V8 producing 500 PS (368 kW; 493 hp).[19] The Cayenne S Hybrid uses an Volkswagen-sourced 3.0-L V6 engine producing 333 PS (245 kW; 328 hp), paired with a nickel metal hydride battery capable of 47 PS (35 kW; 46 hp), for a total of 380 PS (279 kW; 375 hp).[22] A manual gearbox serves as the standard transmission system on the base Cayenne, with all other models featuring an eight-speed Tiptronic as standard equipment. The low-range transfer case found in the previous generation has been removed. All vehicles will feature about 10% less weight than their predecessors, 70 kg worth of standard equipment in excess of that found on the current model and a more heavily contoured rear bench.[citation needed]
Available Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) active anti-roll bars,[23] Adaptive air suspension and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM).
In September 2012 Porsche announced the Cayenne S Diesel.[24] This model is fitted with the Volkswagen 4.1-L V8 TDI engine. In October 2012, Porsche confirmed the addition of a new Cayenne Turbo S.[25]
In July 2014, Porsche launched a facelifted Cayenne range, with minor exterior alterations and new power-train options, including a plug-in E-Hybrid and downsizing of the S model’s 4.8-L V8 to a turbocharged 3.6-L V6.[citation needed]

Hybrid[edit]
At the IAA 2005, Porsche announced it would produce a hybrid version of the Cayenne before 2010 (Porsche Cayenne Hybrid).[26] Two years later, at the IAA 2007, Porsche presented a functioning Cayenne Hybrid and demonstration model of the drivetrain.[27]
Notable modifications to this car include an electric vacuum pump and hydraulic steering pump, allowing the car to function even when the engine is deactivated. A 288-volt nickel metal hydride battery is placed under the boot floor, occupying the space normally used for a spare tire.[28]
The production version, called the ‘S’ Hybrid, was launched in 2010, with a 3.0-L petrol V6 linked with an electric motor to achieve CO2 emissions of 193 g/km.[29] The S Hybrid was launched in the U.S. market in November 2010.[30]
Plug-in hybrid[edit]
Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid charging port.
In July 2014, Porsche announced the launch of the Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid, a plug-in hybrid with an all-electric range between 18 and 36 km (11 and 22 mi) under the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) standard. The plug-in model displaced the Cayenne S Hybrid from the line up, and it is part of the revised range. The Cayenne S E-Hybrid is the first plug-in hybrid in the premium SUV segment, allowing Porsche to become the first automaker with three production plug-in hybrid models.[31] Deliveries in Germany were scheduled to begin in October 2014.[32] Sales in the U.S. began in November 2014.[33]

Guinness World Record[edit]
On 1 May 2017, a 2017 Porsche Cayenne S Diesel set the Guinness World Record for heaviest aircraft pulled by a production car. The Cayenne towed a 265-ton Air France Airbus A380 to a distance of 42 meters, breaking the previous 2013 record of a Nissan Patrol towing a 170-ton Ilyushin Il-76 to a distance of 50 meters.[35] After the attempt Porsche repeated the test using a petrol-powered Cayenne Turbo S with 800 Nm of torque, 50 Nm less than the S Diesel, in an effort to prove the Cayenne’s remarkable ability.[36]

Variants[edit]
Cayenne Turbo GT[edit]
On June 30, 2021, Porsche introduced the Cayenne Turbo GT version. It uses a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine (which Porsche claims to produce 631 hp) and claimed 0–100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.3secs/0–60 mph (97 km/h) in 3.1secs. It is equipped with 22-inch wheels with Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres.[41] Ride height is 18mm lower and total vehicle height is 30mm lower.

All Cayenne models clearly express their heritage. Thanks to their heavily emphasised front wings, a bonnet with power domes and characteristic three-part air intakes.

Transmission.
8-speed Tiptronic S.
The 8-speed Tiptronic S in the Cayenne models reduces fuel consumption thanks to its wide ratio spread, thereby enhancing comfort and athleticism. 8-Speed Tiptronic S shifts gear automatically – and adapts to your driving style.
Porsche Traction Management (PTM).
The active all-wheel drive of Porsche Traction Management (PTM) provides optimal lateral support as well as the best possible power distribution. You select the respective off-road mode by using terms such as ‘gravel’ or ‘mud’ in PCM. On mountain descents, Porsche Hill Control (PHC) keeps the speed constant between 3 and 30km/h.
Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus).
PTV Plus is a system intended to improve driving dynamics and stability. It works with a precise application of the brakes on the rear wheels and an electronically regulated rear differential lock. For increased stability, outstanding traction and high agility at any speed.
Coasting.
To save fuel, the so-called coasting function is possible in certain situations. The engine is decoupled from the transmission and reduced to idling speed, thereby avoiding its braking effect.
Chassis systems.
Porsche 4D Chassis Control.
Porsche 4D Chassis Control centrally analyses the driving situation in all three spatial dimensions, calculates the best driving conditions and synchronises all the chassis systems in real time.
Adaptive air suspension.
The three-chamber technology and adaptive air suspension, provides a better mix of comfort and sporty driving; spring rate is changed per driving mode and situation. With self-levelling function, ride-height adjustment and PASM.
Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM).
PASM is an electronic damping control system that actively controls the damping force as per the road conditions and driving mode, for each wheel. For reduced body movements and more seat comfort. Three modes: ‘Normal’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Sport Plus’.
Rear-axle steering.
Rear-axle steering improves handling at low speeds, thereby simplifying manoeuvring and turning. At higher speeds, it significantly increases driving stability.
Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC).
PDCC — active roll stabilisation system. It suppresses the lateral body movement during dynamic cornering. For improved performance, even more neutral handling and increased ride comfort at any speed.
Sport Chrono Package.
At the touch of a button, the Sport Chrono Package tunes the chassis, engine and transmission. It includes a stopwatch, as well as the display of lateral and longitudinal acceleration and lap times.
Mode switch with four driving modes.
Mode switch with Sport Response button — derived from the 918 Spyder. Located on the steering wheel. Choose from four driving modes: ‘Normal’, ‘Sport’, ‘Sport Plus’ and ‘Individual’.
Sport Response function and Performance Start.
Press the button in the centre of the switch to prime the engine and transmission for top responsiveness – for approx. 20 seconds. The Performance Start also provides super start-up acceleration.
Lightweight sports packages.
There are three versions of the lightweight sports package, which is only available for Cayenne Coupé models. All have a contoured carbon roof, SportDesign package with carbon diffuser trim, 22-inch GT Design wheels, carbon interior package and sports exhaust system for the Cayenne Turbo Coupé; sports system with central tailpipes for the Cayenne GTS Coupé, Turbo Coupé and Turbo S E-Hybrid Coupé.
Owners of a Cayenne Coupé model can have the lightweight sports package with the rear apron, wheel arch mouldings, sideskirts, door sidebars, front apron, air intake grilles, airblades painted in black (matt) and 22-inch GT Design wheels painted in satin black as an option.
Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur
The lightweight sports package, carbon for the Cayenne Coupé models adds airblades and exterior mirror upper trims in carbon. The air intake grilles, mirror lower trims and base have a black high-gloss finish.
Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur
Brakes.
Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB).
The Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) discs have a diameter of 440mm at the front axle and 410mm at the rear axle — for even greater braking performance.
Surface Coated Brake (PSCB).
The Porsche Surface Coated Brake (PSCB) combines a cast-iron brake disc with a ceramic coating. The brakes shine, and not just because of the white brake calipers. Other advantages include improved corrosion resistance of the brake discs, even during prolonged idle periods, and significantly reduced formation of brake dust. The result: the wheels and brake system stay clean for longer.
As well as its brake calipers in exclusive red, the system is also more tuned to high performance and uses aluminium monobloc fixed brake calipers. Pedal travel is short, the pressure point precise.
Six-piston aluminium brake calipers at the front; four-piston units at the rear have a closed monobloc design, giving a constant braking effect even under high load. Brake discs are internally vented.
The Porsche Surface Coated Brake (PSCB) is fitted as standard on Cayenne Turbo models, powerfully complementing the drive performance and outstanding braking power.
In the Cayenne E-Hybrid models, six pistons at the front and four at the rear ensure outstanding performance, enhanced by brake calipers in exclusive Acid Green.
S
E-Hybrid
brakes.
In the Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid models, the standard Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) boasts brake calipers in exclusive Acid Green – and maximum performance when braking.
Powerful, even under max. load and with up to 3,500kg towing capacity: the fixed brake calipers of the Cayenne models with four-piston aluminium units at the front and two-piston units at the rear.
Active Aerodynamics (PAA).
The
Cayenne Coupé
models have active aerodynamics, as do the
Cayenne Turbo
and
Cayenne Turbo
S
E-Hybrid
. Active slats in the front air intakes enable the combustion engine to be efficiently cooled. In the
Cayenne Coupé
models, the adaptive rear spoiler extends by 135mm, also ensuring the appropriate downforce for every situation. While the adaptive roof spoiler on the
Cayenne Turbo
provides stabilising contact pressure on the rear axle while driving. In the ‘air brake’ position, this helps to shorten braking distances.

Seats.
The front, adaptive Sports seats (18-way, electric) with memory package are also fully geared towards sporty driving. They guarantee genuine motorsport emotion – without having to compromise on comfort. The optional massage function for the front comfort seats (14-way, electric) provides relaxation on longer journeys.
Variability.
Other typical strengths of all Cayenne models: the generous amount of space and a stowage volume that can be more than doubled with the rear seat folded down. In addition to this great versatility, there are also a variety of personalisation options. In short: almost too good for outings alone.
Four-zone automatic climate control.
The four-zone automatic climate control features individual temperature controls for the driver and front passenger, and separate ones for the rear seats, too. An active carbon filter traps particles, pollen and odours and thoroughly filters fine dust from the outside air before it reaches the interior.
Infotainment.
Porsche Communication Management (PCM) is your control centre for audio, navigation and communication. As well as a full-HD 12.3-inch touchscreen display, PCM also provides extensive interfaces, voice control system and, of course, online connection. It is also possible to use Apple CarPlay.
The sound: like you’re in one of the best concert halls in the world. 1,455-watt total output, 21 individually controlled loudspeakers including an active subwoofer with 400-watt class D digital amplifier, two-way centre system and a total diaphragm surface area of more than 2,500cm2, plus a 3D sound experience created by loudspeakers in the A-pillars and a special 3D algorithm.
14 loudspeakers and amplifier channels including a separate subwoofer with a total output of 710 watts ensure a balanced, faithfully reproduced soundscape. The BOSE® SoundTrue Enhancement Technology ensures even better audio quality and dynamics for compressed file formats.
Driver assistance systems.
Porsche InnoDrive including adaptive cruise control.
Porsche InnoDrive¹ recognises speed limits and road gradients along your route before you reach them. And adapts the gear change strategy and speed.
¹ Porsche InnoDrive is subject to limitations. The driver must always monitor driving style and intervene if in doubt. The system can be overridden by using the brake or accelerator pedal.
Head-Up Display.
The freely configurable, full-colour head-up display projects all information pertaining to the journey directly into the driver’s field of vision.
Note: the film shows Night Vision Assist in combination with Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus (PDLS Plus), briefly flashing the headlights at pedestrians.
Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus (PDLS Plus).
In addition to dynamic range control, Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus (PDLS Plus) also includes dynamic cornering lights and an intersection light based on navigation data. The LED matrix beam specifically deactivates segments of the permanent main-beam cone so that other vehicles are no longer dazzled, reflective traffic signs are faded out and the driver is less distracted.
Night Vision Assist.
Night Vision Assist uses an infrared camera to detect pedestrians and large wildlife before they are illuminated by the headlights. A thermal image in the instrument cluster warns the driver.
Active Parking Assistance.
Active Parking Assistance¹ automatically detects and measures parking spaces. If the parking conditions are right, you can initiate the parallel and perpendicular parking processes. The system takes over the steering and the forward and backward movement of the vehicle.
¹Note: the functions described support the driver where system limitations allow. The driver is still responsible and must pay the necessary attention to the traffic on the road.
Remote ParkAssist¹ ²
Remote ParkAssist¹ ² combines many intelligent assistance systems that make it easier to park. For example, remote parking¹ ² allows you to use your smartphone from outside the vehicle to enter and exit parallel and perpendicular parking spaces with your Cayenne, as well as garages.
¹ Note: the functions described support the driver where system limitations allow. The driver is still responsible and must pay the necessary attention to the traffic on the road.
² Only supported by Apple iPhones from iPhone 7 and iOS 13.0 and above.
Lane Keeping Assist and Lane Change Assist.
While Lane Keeping Assist helps to keep the vehicle in lane, Lane Change Assist uses radar-based technology to monitor the area behind the vehicle and blind spots.
Collision and Brake Assist.
Collision and Brake Assist detects vehicles, pedestrians or cyclists in the collision area, alerts the driver and performs an automatic emergency stop, if necessary.
Note: the film shows Night Vision Assist in combination with Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus (PDLS Plus), briefly flashing the headlights at pedestrians.
