Hedgehog in the Fog (Russian: Ёжик в тумане, tr. Yózhik v tumáne, IPA: [ˈjɵʐɨk f tʊˈmanʲɪ]) is a 1975 Soviet animated film directed by Yuri Norstein[1] and produced by the Soyuzmultfilm studio in Moscow.[2][3] The Russian script was written by Sergei Grigoryevich Kozlov, who also published a book under the same name.
In 2006, Norstein published a book titled Hedgehog in the Fog, listing himself as an author alongside Kozlov.[4]
Plot[edit]
Hedgehog (voiced by Maria Vinogradova) sets off for his evening visit to his friend Bear-Cub. Every evening, the two meet to have tea and count the stars. This evening, Hedgehog is bringing Bear-Cub some raspberry-jam as a special treat. As Hedgehog heads out, a sinister-looking eagle-owl begins to stalk him.
As he walks through the woods, Hedgehog sees a beautiful white horse. As Hedgehog watches, the horse disappears into the heavy fog. Curious as to whether the horse will drown in the fog, Hedgehog decides to explore the fog for himself. As he travels into a valley, the fog is soon so thick that Hedgehog loses his way.
Believing that he has spotted the white horse, Hedgehog instead discovers a leaf floating down with a snail riding on it. Hedgehog tries to touch the snail, but it floats away and disappears. Another shadowy creature resembling an elephant appears. It is so large and frightening that Hedgehog runs away, only to be startled by a black bat. All the while, the white horse is seen in glimpses.
Finally, Hedgehog spots the largest shape of all. Setting down his jam, he picks up a stick and pokes at the large shape to find that it is a hollow tree. Suddenly, he realizes that he has lost his jam and searches frantically for it, only to find himself surrounded by the owl, the bat, and the shadowy elephant. He becomes more and more confused and frightened until a friendly dog emerges from the fog and returns the jam to Hedgehog.
Hedgehog attempts to find a way out of the fog, but falls into a river. He is resigned to let the river take him where it will, but a mysterious voice asks what is wrong. The voice (implied to belong to a fish) takes Hedgehog to shore, where Hedgehog finds himself back in the woods, free from fog. Hedgehog thanks his rescuer.
Resuming his journey, Hedgehog runs into Bear-Cub (voiced by Vyacheslav Nevinny), who has been searching for his friend. At first, Bear-Cub scolds Hedgehog for being so late that the tea has gone cold and the fire has burned down, but eventually, Bear-Cub admits that he was worried that something ill had become of Hedgehog and that there would be no-one with whom to watch the stars.
The two friends sit by the fire and drink their tea. Bear-Cub talks on and on about how glad he is to have found his friend, but Hedgehog stares in silence at the stars, wondering what became of the white horse.[5][6]

The fog effects were created by putting a very thin piece of paper on top of the scene and slowly lifting it up toward the camera frame-by-frame until everything behind it became blurry and white.[7]
Role in Soviet animation[edit]
Soviet-era children’s animation and literature was faced with the task of producing politically acceptable content. Anthropologist Serguei Oushakine recognizes this atmosphere of indefinite deferment in the animation, stating: «The main thing is the work of imagination, or more precisely, the terror and pleasure with which it is linked. The final scene of pleasure, to which these various phantasmal and/or realistic experiences should indeed have led, is not included in the plot.»[8] This is evident through the hedgehog’s anxiety and fixation on the horse, even after he succeeds in meeting the bear for tea.
Legacy[edit]
Hedgehog in the Fog was ranked No. 1 in a poll at the 2003 Laputa Animation Festival where 140 animators from around the world voted for the best animated films of all time.[9]
Hayao Miyazaki, acclaimed animator of Studio Ghibli stated that he drew his inspiration from many animators including Yuri Norstein.[10][11]
Since January 2009, the main character (the Hedgehog) from the movie has a statue in the city center of the capital of Ukraine, Kyiv.[12]
The film was spoofed in the third episode of the eighth season of the animated comedy series Family Guy, «Spies Reminiscent of Us», in 2009.[13]
The opening ceremonies for the 2014 Winter Olympics referenced this work, mentioning it in a list of signature Russian accomplishments and artists, including Fyodor Dostoevsky, Leo Tolstoy, and Sputnik.[14]
The series Kikoriki has an episode called Chiko in the Fog, reminiscent of Nornstein’s cartoon in its composition and style.

Ежик ходил все время к Медвежонку в гости и однажды заблудился в тумане. Когда он вышел из тумана, он был уже другим.
История с мультфильмом «Ежик в тумане» развивалась следующим образом. Мы с Франческой Ярбусовой — моей женой и художником-постановщиком одновременно — сделали мультипликационный фильм «Лиса и заяц». И когда его показали, в самом начале 1974 года, раздался звонок. Незнакомый мне человек представился: «Я сказочник Сергей Козлов». И добавил, что он видел наш фильм и хотел бы показать свои сказки. Мы встретились, он принес штук 40 сказок — они действительно были хорошо написаны. Видно было, что талантливый человек. Но если бы там не было «Ежика в тумане», я бы ничего не стал делать.
Сказка изначально была несколько другой: она была написана буквально на одном листочке. Да и от этого листочка в фильм попала ровно половина. А дальше была работа над сценарием, идею которого предложил уже я. Потому что сказка — сказкой, но сценарий — сценарием. И фильм — это совершенно другое искусство. Я предложил Козлову идею о том, что Ежик ходил все время к Медвежонку в гости и однажды заблудился в тумане. Когда он вышел из тумана, он был уже другим. «Другим человеком», как я говорю. И еще важная деталь: когда он блуждал в тумане, он все время слышал крик кого-то, кто его звал. Это был Медвежонок.
Что касается изобразительной части фильма, тут я должен сказать, прежде всего, о Франческе Ярбусовой. Она очень хорошо чувствует природу, знает ее. И она довольно долго билась над Ежиком. Ведь этот мультипликационный персонаж участвует во многих фильмах, но нам нужен был абсолютно другой герой. И сделать его стоило огромных творческих усилий. Хотя, как вы знаете, персонаж очень простой по своему абрису. И в то же время — он отличается от всех мультипликационных ежиков, которые мелькают на экране.
И есть еще один человек, о котором необходимо сказать, — это кинооператор фильма Александр Жуковский. Вообще кинооператорская работа в мультипликации для меня не менее важна, чем в игровом фильме. И я полагаю, что, если бы не Александр Жуковский, фильм был бы совершенно другим. С его стороны это была не просто творческая помощь — тут речь идет о творческом соавторстве. Хотя, когда я рассказал о предполагаемом фильме Александру Борисовичу, он прежде всего меня спросил: «Ну и как ты предполагаешь сделать туман?» Я ему рассказал технический ход. И он ответил: «Да, правильно. Я это знал. Мне интересно было, что ты по этому поводу думаешь». Так что в нашем случае было проявлено творческое единство всех участников – режиссера, художника-постановщика и кинооператора.

Тридцать комариков выбежали на поляну и заиграли на своих писклявых скрипках. Из-за туч вышла луна и, улыбаясь поплыла по небу.
«МММ-у!.. — вздохнула корова за рекой. Завыла собака, и сорок лунных зайцев побежали по дорожке.
Над рекой поднялся туман, и грустная белая лошадь утонула в нем по грудь, и теперь казалось — большая белая утка плывет в тумане и, отфыркиваясь, опускает в него голову.
Ёжик сидел на горке под сосной и смотрел на освещенную лунным светом долину, затопленную туманом.
Красиво было так, что он время от времени вздрагивал: не снится ли ему все это?
А комарики не уставали играть на своих скрипачках, лунные зайцы плясали, а собака выла.
«Расскажу — не поверят!» — подумал Ёжик и стал смотреть еще внимательнее, чтобы запомнить до последней травинки всю красоту.
«Вот и звезда упала,— заметил он,— и трава наклонилась влево, и от елки осталась одна вершина, и теперь она плывет рядом с лошадью…
А интересно,— думал Ёжик,— ели лошадь ляжет спать, она захлебнется в тумане?»
И он стал медленно спускаться с горы, чтобы тоже попасть в туман и посмотреть, как там внутри.
— Вот,— сказал Ёжик.— Ничего не видно. И даже лапы не видно. Лошадь! — позвал он.
Но лошадь ничего не сказала.
«Где же лошадь?» — подумал Ёжик. И пополз прямо.
Вокруг было глухо темно и мокро, лишь высоко вверху сумрак слабо светился.
Полз он долго—долго, и вдруг почувствовал, что земли под ним нет и он куда—то летит.
Бул-тых!..
«Я в реке!» — сообразил Ёжик, похолодев от страха.
И стал бить лапами во все стороны.
Когда он вынырнул, было по—прежнему темно, и Ёжик даже не знал, где берег.
«Пускай река сама несет меня!» — решил он. Как мог, глубоко вздохнул, и его понесло вниз по течению.
Река шуршала камышами, бурлила на перекатах, и Ёжик чувствовал, что совсем промок и скоро утонет.
Вдруг кто-то дотронулся до его задней лапы.
— Извините,— беззвучно сказал кто-то,— кто вы и как сюда попали?
— Я — Ёжик,— тоже беззвучно ответил Ёжик.— Я упал в Реку.
— Тогда садитесь ко мне на спину,— беззвучно проговорил кто-то.— Я отвезу вас на берег.
Ёжик сел на чью-то узкую скользкую спину и через минуту оказался на берегу.
— Спасибо — вслух сказал он.
— Не за что — беззвучно выговорил кто-то, кого Ёжик даже не видел, и пропал в волнах.
«Вот так история…— размышлял Ёжик, отряхиваясь.— Разве кто поверит?!»
И заковылял в тумане.
