The Kul Sharif Mosque[1] (Tatar: Кол Шәриф мәчете; Russian: Мечеть Кул-Шариф, romanized: Mechet’ Kul-Sharif) located in Kazan Kremlin, was reputed to be – at the time of its construction – one of the largest mosques in Russia, and in Europe outside of Istanbul.[2]
History[edit]
Originally, the mosque was built in the Kazan Kremlin in the 16th century. It was named after Kul Sharif, who was a religious scholar who served there. Kul Sharif died with his numerous students while defending Kazan from Russian forces in 1552 during the Siege of Kazan, and the mosque was destroyed by Ivan the Terrible’s forces.[3] It is believed that the building featured minarets, both in the form of cupolas and tents. Its design was traditional for Volga Bulgaria, although elements of early Renaissance and Ottoman architecture could have been used as well.[citation needed]
The mosque displays several detail through mosaics, ornaments, calligraphy, and more.
Several countries contributed to the fund that was set up to rebuild Kul Sharif Mosque, namely Saudi Arabia, and United Arab Emirates.[citation needed] Nowadays the mosque predominantly serves as a museum of Islam.[citation needed] At the same time during the major Muslim celebrations thousands of people gather there to pray.[citation needed]
The Kul Sharif complex was envisioned to be an important cornerstone of Kazan’s architectural landscape. Besides the main mosque building it includes a library, publishing house and Imam’s office.[citation needed]

The main Muslim temple of Tatarstan is the Kul Sharif Mosque in Kazan. It is a re-created mosque of the Kazan Khanate of the XVI century. The original mosque was destroyed in 1552 by the troops of Ivan the Terrible. A modern temple was being built near the Kazan Kremlin for ten years. The total of 400 million rubles of donations were spent for its construction.
The Kul Sharif Mosque is a grandiose and at the same time quite elegant building with four minarets, the height of which is 58 meters. One and a half thousand believers can be present in the mosque simultaneously. Certainly one needs to look at the interior of the mosque. Here one can see the Urals marble, and Iranian carpets, and an amazing mosaic, and a two-ton crystal chandelier from the Czech Republic. There are two special balconies for excursions under the ceiling of the main hall.

Probably the most famous and easily recognisable building in Kazan. This Mosque is beautiful both inside and out. Entry is free, it’s well worth climbing the stairs to the two balconies as these offer great views of the mosque. There is also a small museum in the basement.

Built by the Turks, financed by Saudi Arabia, UAE and Iran (well, by the Russian government also, of course!), adorned with calligraphy by the Iraqis. A global Muslim project :))
Me and my wife visited this architectural piece of art in Mid-June. Stepping in, we stopped awestruck. From the inside it looks even lighter and more sophisticated than from the outside. Big windows, rib vaults, intricate arabesques, carpets… Though Islam in Tatarstan is not very strict, still visitors must be dressed appropriately. Men and women are not obliged to walk separately, however.
Climb the balcony. The view therefrom is well worth the efforts taken.
Strongly recommended!

The Kul Sharif Mosque is one of the most prominent sights in Kazan with an interesting history behind it. It’s turquoise blue dome and minarets stand out on the city’s panorama.
The original Mosque on this place dates back to early 16c. However it was demolished to ground when Ivan the Terrible attacked Kazan. It’s named after Imam Kul Sharif, who died defending the city with his scholars during Ivan’s invasion.
The present Mosque was finished in 2005, at the time of millennium celebrations of Kazan foundation. It’s a symbol of multiethnic Tatarstan standing few hundred meters from the Annunciation Cathedral.
Visiting the Mosque is free, and the interiors are also very nice. The ground floor is for men, while female pray on the second floor. Do climb the third floor terrace from where you can admire the entire interior with its lotus like ceiling.
In the basement is a small Islamic museum with a small entry fee.

The view from below the Kazan kremlin area is spectacle. As you walk up the hill you get a great sense of history with many of the older buildings on this site. But this mosque is practically brand new but fits in so well with all the buildings around it — a must see.

Kul Sharif — one of the most magnificent mosques.
We were lucky to see golden sunset contrasted with brightly smaragd archs and minarets.

The mosque is absolutely worth to see, it’s a good idea to visit it in the evening also, it looks different, than in the daylight. I also recommend the Museum of Islam. The entry is free to the mosque. At the entry women can take there a headscarf if they don’t have one.
