Сюжет[]

В викторианском Лондоне красивая и молодая Алиса рассказывает историю о необычной стране, которая существует по ту сторону кроличьей норы. Там обитают исчезающий кот, курящая кальян гусеница, ожившие игральные карты и другие фантастические существа. Конечно, девушку приняли за сумасшедшую. Главная цель врачей — вылечить её, чтобы Алиса забыла всё, что там происходило. Алиса тоже согласна забыть обо всём, потому что её доставляют боль воспоминания о джинне, в которого она влюбилась и потеряла навсегда. Но красивый и таинственный Сайрус ставит девушку перед фактом: в глубине души она знает, что мир, о котором она рассказывала, существует. И в самый последний момент Валет Червей и неутомимый Белый Кролик спасают Алису от неизбежности.

Когда создатели сериала «Однажды в сказке» представили зрителям ответвление своего шоу, посвященное Стране чудес и Аграбе (напомним, что телекомпания ABC принадлежит студии Walt Disney, и потому оба «Однажды…» вдохновлены популярными диснеевскими мультфильмами), они незамедлительно объявили, что запланировали лишь тринадцать серий. Мол, «мы расскажем цельную историю со счастливым концом, а если рейтинги будут высокими, то для второго сезона мы сочиним новое приключение для полюбившихся персонажей». Также они признались, что им было очень приятно работать над сериалом, где не нужно было планировать сюжетные линии на пять лет вперед, как им это приходится делать в «Однажды в сказке».

Хотя существенная часть действия развивается на сказочном Ближнем Востоке, лишь один актер сериала происходит из этого региона. Брайан Джордж (султан Аграбы) родился в Иерусалиме, в семье иракских евреев

Поэтому, когда стало известно, что «Однажды в Стране чудес» смотрят лишь три миллиона американских зрителей (в два раза меньше, чем «Однажды в сказке») и что продления на второй сезон не будет, немногочисленные поклонники шоу вздохнули с грустью, но без ярости. По крайней мере новый «Однажды…» не закончился на драматичном «клиффхэнгере», как в прошлом году получилось с внезапно закрытым детективным сериалом «Болота», где в финальной серии неизвестный преступник всадил две пули в главного героя и оставил его умирать! Как и положено в диснеевских сказках, Зло в финале «Однажды в Стране чудес» было наказано, а Добро восторжествовало и даже обзавелось очаровательной дочуркой.

К сожалению, это единственное, за что можно похвалить сериал и дать ему с полки пирожок. Ну, еще, пожалуй, за Майкла Сочу – молодого британского актера из заключительных сезонов сериала «Быть человеком», для которого это была первая возможность представить себя американской публике. Червовый валет с его печальными глазами, разбитым сердцем, саркастическим юмором, внешностью перевоспитывающегося гопника (Соча дебютировал в 2006 году в фильме о скинхедах «Это Англия») и замашками антигероя был, как говорят в спорте, «самым полезным игроком» сериала – обаятельным, неоднозначным и интригующим. Никто не удивился, когда авторы шоу объявили, что если «Однажды в сказке» будет продлен на следующий сезон, то у Валета будет там важная сюжетная роль.

В остальном же страно-чудесный «Однажды…» разочаровал. Унылая главная героиня без страха, упрека и драматической глубины, столь же унылый злодей, чья трагичная предыстория не добавила к нему симпатии (то ли дело восхитительная Злая королева из «Однажды в сказке»!), абсолютно «никакой» джинн Сайрус, запоминающаяся лишь невероятно пухлыми губами и стремительными прыжками от доброты к злодейству и обратно королева Анастасия… И прочий убогий паноптикум, порой неубедительно нарисованный на компьютерах или снабженный такими костюмами и гримом для изображения сказочных существ, что их постеснялись бы трэшевые фильмы.

Вообще, «трэш» – это слово, которое точнее всего описывает «Однажды в Стране чудес». Конечно, сериал по мотивам «Алисы в Стране чудес» и «Аладдина» не может быть средоточием реализма. Но такое шоу должно быть либо потоком поразительных, захватывающих чудес, либо, наоборот, заземленным зрелищем вроде «Однажды в сказке», которое предлагает зрителям смотреть сквозь сказочные образы и видеть не принцесс, королев и фей, а психологически убедительных и интересных людей с запутанной личной жизнью и сложными душевными переживаниями.

Справедливости ради надо заметить, что «Однажды в сказке» не всегда берет установленную для себя планку, и в последнее время у него это выходит все реже и реже. Но периодически у него это получается. В «Однажды в Стране чудес» же это изредка удавалось лишь Валету. В остальном шоу представляло собой череду примитивных семейно-романтических интриг и едва осмысленных приключений без взлетов фантазии и творческой смелости Льюиса Кэрролла.

И, наконец, сериал совершил нечто непростительное – всучил Джону Литгоу озвучание Белого кролика. Право, этот актер легко вписался бы в сказочный мир в человеческой роли. Сериал бы это не спасло, но шоу выиграло бы от реального присутствия актера такого калибра. А кролика могли бы озвучить многие, многие другие.

Once Upon a Time in Wonderland is an American fantasy-drama series that aired on ABC from October 10, 2013, to April 3, 2014. It was created by Edward Kitsis, Adam Horowitz, Zack Estrin, and Jane Espenson for ABC Studios. The program is a spin-off of the prior ABC series Once Upon a Time and aired on ABC at 8:00 pm Eastern/7:00 pm Central on Thursday nights in the 2013–14 television season beginning October 10, 2013.[1]

The series is based on the Lewis Carroll novels Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass (1871) but with a different twist from the other adaptations, and takes place in the same universe as Once Upon a Time in present-day Wonderland, with flashbacks to Wonderland before it fell prey to a dark curse.[2] It follows the same setting as the parent series, including the use of Disney and Lost allusions. In addition, the series features occasional crossover events with Once Upon a Time that involve connections with the characters that are trapped in Storybrooke, Maine.[3]

The series received mixed to positive reviews from critics, who praised its cast, visuals, and narrative, but criticized the muddled plot. On March 27, 2014, it was revealed that the series would be ending after one season, with the series finale airing on April 3, 2014.[4] In April 2014, Michael Socha was confirmed to reprise his role as Will Scarlet / Knave of Hearts as a series regular in the fourth season of Once Upon a Time.[5][6]

Premise[edit]

After the apparent death of her true love Cyrus, Alice returns home to Victorian England where she is placed in an asylum, and her doctors aim to cure her with a treatment that will make her forget everything about her tales in Wonderland. However, she is rescued by the Knave of Hearts and the White Rabbit and brought back to Wonderland to save Cyrus, who is spotted alive. Now back in Wonderland, Alice must evade the plots of Jafar and the Red Queen, all while dealing with the whimsical dangers of Wonderland, including the infamous Jabberwocky, and in a crazy and dangerous way to find her true love.

Production and casting[edit]

In February 2013, Kitsis and Horowitz, along with producers Zack Estrin and Jane Espenson, began development on a spin-off of Once Upon a Time which would focus on Lewis Carroll’s Wonderland. It was initially reported that the show would recast Sebastian Stan’s Mad Hatter due to his commitment to the Marvel Cinematic Universe,[10] but Kitsis later revealed the next month that due to fan backlash and respect for Stan’s performance, the character would not be recast and the series would proceed without the character.[11]

The show includes new characters, such as «Amahl, described as exotic, soulful and optimistic; and The Knave, a sardonic adventurer, a man of action, a loner and a heart-breaker.»[12] On March 28, 2013, it was announced that Sophie Lowe would portray the lead role of Alice. It was also announced that Peter Gadiot would play her love interest, Cyrus, who has «a background». Michael Socha will portray the Knave of Hearts. Barbara Hershey, who has appeared as Cora, the Queen of Hearts, in the main series, may also appear in this spin-off reprising the same role in back stories .[13] Also, during the month of April, Paul Reubens was cast as the voice of the White Rabbit[14] and Emma Rigby was cast as the Red Queen.[15]

On May 10, 2013, ABC announced that it had greenlit the spin-off, as well as also announcing that John Lithgow would replace Reubens as the voice of the White Rabbit. On May 14, 2013, ABC announced that the spin-off will air in the Thursday night timeslot instead of making it a fill-in for the parent series.[16] «We really want to tell the story without having to worry about how to stretch it for five years,» said Edward Kitsis. «This is not meant to be a 22-episode season. Whatever it ends up being, we’ll have told a complete story …»[17] It was revealed in August at the TCA Summer Press Tour that, contrary to previous reports that more than 13 episodes were ordered straight out the gate, only the usual number of 13 episodes had been ordered. Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz commented «However many we wind up doing this season, what we’re planning to do is tell a kind of complete tale with a beginning, middle and end» and added «If it does well [and] people like it, hopefully we’ll come back and tell another adventure with this cast.»[18]

At Comic-Con 2013, it was announced that former Lost star, Naveen Andrews, would be joining the cast as the villain Jafar.[19] It was announced in September that Keith David and Iggy Pop would also be included on the cast, as the Cheshire Cat and Caterpillar respectively. Iggy Pop will be a replacement for Roger Daltrey, who voiced the character originally as a guest star on Once Upon a Time. Barbara Hershey reprised her role as the Queen of Hearts in one episode.

Rotten Tomatoes gave the series an approval rating of 59% based on 27 reviews, with an average rating of 6.03/10. The site’s critical consensus reads «Once Upon a Time in Wonderland is attractive to the eye and pleasantly narrated, but it loses some luster due to a jumbled story and Wonderland’s unlikable inhabitants.»[33] The series has a score of 59/100 on Metacritic based on 23 critics, indicating «mixed or average reviews».[34]

Common Sense Media rated the show 4 out of 5 stars, stating : «Parents need to know that, similar to its parent series, Once Upon a Time, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland extrapolates on familiar fairy tales and stories in creative and often mature ways. This one has its roots in Lewis Carroll’s classic tale Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, but it incorporates other fantasy characters from unrelated stories as well. Despite its relationship to stories synonymous with childhood, this isn’t a show for young kids, thanks to plenty of violence of both the traditional kind (knives, swordplay, and fistfights) and the magical kind. Danger lurks around every corner, and the characters’ double-crossing and changing loyalties are part of the fun, but they will be confusing for some young viewers. Sex is less of an issue, although some female characters’ attire –- the voluptuous Red Queen’s in particular –- is designed to draw attention to certain curvy areas. The bottom line? Even though the cast of characters seems to contradict this dark show’s target at an older audience, it’s a tantalizing blend of action and drama with ties to stories you and your teens will have fun recalling from your own childhood».[35]

Mary McNamara of the Los Angeles Times gave the show a positive review writing: «There is plenty of that—the good, the beautiful and the etc. Some of it is conjured by CG magic (the Red Queen’s palace is splendid, and the White Rabbit’s ears a masterwork), and some by just good storytelling and performer chemistry, which Lowe and Socha have in abundance. Add to that a smattering of witty dialogue, clever character twists and, of course, the Victo-goth steampunk look, and ABC has another shot at redefining the family hour.»[36] David Wiegand of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote that while the plot was «a little overstuffed», «the special effects, crisp direction and high-octane performances keep us interested enough to follow Alice down the rabbit hole.»[37] Brian Lowry of Variety gave the show a mixed review: «Wonderland is equally handsome [as Once Upon a Time], but behind those virtual sets lurk many potential flaws. An appealing Alice certainly helps matters, but past performance reduces the likelihood of a fairy-tale ending.»[38]

Once Upon a Time in Wonderland is an American fantasy-drama series that aired on ABC from October 10, 2013, to April 3, 2014. It was created by Edward Kitsis, Adam Horowitz, Zack Estrin, and Jane Espenson for ABC Studios. The program is a spin-off of the prior ABC series Once Upon a Time and aired on ABC at 8:00 pm Eastern/7:00 pm Central on Thursday nights in the 2013–14 television season beginning October 10, 2013.[1]

The series is based on the Lewis Carroll novels Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass (1871) but with a different twist from the other adaptations, and takes place in the same universe as Once Upon a Time in present-day Wonderland, with flashbacks to Wonderland before it fell prey to a dark curse.[2] It follows the same setting as the parent series, including the use of Disney and Lost allusions. In addition, the series features occasional crossover events with Once Upon a Time that involve connections with the characters that are trapped in Storybrooke, Maine.[3]

The series received mixed to positive reviews from critics, who praised its cast, visuals, and narrative, but criticized the muddled plot. On March 27, 2014, it was revealed that the series would be ending after one season, with the series finale airing on April 3, 2014.[4] In April 2014, Michael Socha was confirmed to reprise his role as Will Scarlet / Knave of Hearts as a series regular in the fourth season of Once Upon a Time.[5][6]

Premise[edit]

After the apparent death of her true love Cyrus, Alice returns home to Victorian England where she is placed in an asylum, and her doctors aim to cure her with a treatment that will make her forget everything about her tales in Wonderland. However, she is rescued by the Knave of Hearts and the White Rabbit and brought back to Wonderland to save Cyrus, who is spotted alive. Now back in Wonderland, Alice must evade the plots of Jafar and the Red Queen, all while dealing with the whimsical dangers of Wonderland, including the infamous Jabberwocky, and in a crazy and dangerous way to find her true love.

Production and casting[edit]

In February 2013, Kitsis and Horowitz, along with producers Zack Estrin and Jane Espenson, began development on a spin-off of Once Upon a Time which would focus on Lewis Carroll’s Wonderland. It was initially reported that the show would recast Sebastian Stan’s Mad Hatter due to his commitment to the Marvel Cinematic Universe,[10] but Kitsis later revealed the next month that due to fan backlash and respect for Stan’s performance, the character would not be recast and the series would proceed without the character.[11]

The show includes new characters, such as «Amahl, described as exotic, soulful and optimistic; and The Knave, a sardonic adventurer, a man of action, a loner and a heart-breaker.»[12] On March 28, 2013, it was announced that Sophie Lowe would portray the lead role of Alice. It was also announced that Peter Gadiot would play her love interest, Cyrus, who has «a background». Michael Socha will portray the Knave of Hearts. Barbara Hershey, who has appeared as Cora, the Queen of Hearts, in the main series, may also appear in this spin-off reprising the same role in back stories .[13] Also, during the month of April, Paul Reubens was cast as the voice of the White Rabbit[14] and Emma Rigby was cast as the Red Queen.[15]

On May 10, 2013, ABC announced that it had greenlit the spin-off, as well as also announcing that John Lithgow would replace Reubens as the voice of the White Rabbit. On May 14, 2013, ABC announced that the spin-off will air in the Thursday night timeslot instead of making it a fill-in for the parent series.[16] «We really want to tell the story without having to worry about how to stretch it for five years,» said Edward Kitsis. «This is not meant to be a 22-episode season. Whatever it ends up being, we’ll have told a complete story …»[17] It was revealed in August at the TCA Summer Press Tour that, contrary to previous reports that more than 13 episodes were ordered straight out the gate, only the usual number of 13 episodes had been ordered. Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz commented «However many we wind up doing this season, what we’re planning to do is tell a kind of complete tale with a beginning, middle and end» and added «If it does well [and] people like it, hopefully we’ll come back and tell another adventure with this cast.»[18]

At Comic-Con 2013, it was announced that former Lost star, Naveen Andrews, would be joining the cast as the villain Jafar.[19] It was announced in September that Keith David and Iggy Pop would also be included on the cast, as the Cheshire Cat and Caterpillar respectively. Iggy Pop will be a replacement for Roger Daltrey, who voiced the character originally as a guest star on Once Upon a Time. Barbara Hershey reprised her role as the Queen of Hearts in one episode.

Rotten Tomatoes gave the series an approval rating of 59% based on 27 reviews, with an average rating of 6.03/10. The site’s critical consensus reads «Once Upon a Time in Wonderland is attractive to the eye and pleasantly narrated, but it loses some luster due to a jumbled story and Wonderland’s unlikable inhabitants.»[33] The series has a score of 59/100 on Metacritic based on 23 critics, indicating «mixed or average reviews».[34]

Common Sense Media rated the show 4 out of 5 stars, stating : «Parents need to know that, similar to its parent series, Once Upon a Time, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland extrapolates on familiar fairy tales and stories in creative and often mature ways. This one has its roots in Lewis Carroll’s classic tale Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, but it incorporates other fantasy characters from unrelated stories as well. Despite its relationship to stories synonymous with childhood, this isn’t a show for young kids, thanks to plenty of violence of both the traditional kind (knives, swordplay, and fistfights) and the magical kind. Danger lurks around every corner, and the characters’ double-crossing and changing loyalties are part of the fun, but they will be confusing for some young viewers. Sex is less of an issue, although some female characters’ attire –- the voluptuous Red Queen’s in particular –- is designed to draw attention to certain curvy areas. The bottom line? Even though the cast of characters seems to contradict this dark show’s target at an older audience, it’s a tantalizing blend of action and drama with ties to stories you and your teens will have fun recalling from your own childhood».[35]

Mary McNamara of the Los Angeles Times gave the show a positive review writing: «There is plenty of that—the good, the beautiful and the etc. Some of it is conjured by CG magic (the Red Queen’s palace is splendid, and the White Rabbit’s ears a masterwork), and some by just good storytelling and performer chemistry, which Lowe and Socha have in abundance. Add to that a smattering of witty dialogue, clever character twists and, of course, the Victo-goth steampunk look, and ABC has another shot at redefining the family hour.»[36] David Wiegand of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote that while the plot was «a little overstuffed», «the special effects, crisp direction and high-octane performances keep us interested enough to follow Alice down the rabbit hole.»[37] Brian Lowry of Variety gave the show a mixed review: «Wonderland is equally handsome [as Once Upon a Time], but behind those virtual sets lurk many potential flaws. An appealing Alice certainly helps matters, but past performance reduces the likelihood of a fairy-tale ending.»[38]

«Одна́жды в стране́ чуде́с» (англ. Once Upon a Time in Wonderland) — американский телесериал, созданный Эдвардом Китсисом и Адамом Хоровицом и являющийся спин-оффом сериала «Однажды в сказке». В центре сюжета находится Алиса, персонаж книг Льюиса Кэрролла[1]. Сериал выходил на телеканале ABC в сезоне 2013/14 годов[2][3][4] и транслировался по четвергам в восемь вечера[5], начиная с 10 октября[6].

Сериал не имел успеха и был закрыт 27 марта 2014 года после одного сезона[7].

Сюжет

В викторианском Лондоне красивая и молодая Алиса рассказывает историю о необычной стране, которая существует по ту сторону кроличьей норы. Там обитают исчезающий кот, курящая кальян гусеница, ожившие игральные карты и другие фантастические существа. Конечно, девушку приняли за сумасшедшую. Главная цель врачей — вылечить её, чтобы Алиса забыла всё, что там происходило. Алиса тоже согласна забыть обо всём, потому что ей доставляют боль воспоминания о джинне, в которого она влюбилась и потеряла навсегда. Но красивый и таинственный Сайрус ставит девушку перед фактом: в глубине души она знает, что мир, о котором она рассказывала, существует. И в самый последний момент Валет Червей и неутомимый Белый Кролик спасают Алису от неизбежности.

Производство

В феврале 2013 года Эдвард Китсис и Адам Хоровиц вместе с продюсерами Заком Эстринрм и Джейн Эспенсон объявили о разработке спин-оффа сериала «Однажды в сказке», посвящённого Алисе в стране чудес.

В сравнении со сказкой Кэрролла, в сериале появятся новые персонажи: например, Сайрус, охарактеризованный авторами как «экзотический, душевный и оптимистичный», и Валет, «язвительный авантюрист, человек действия, одиночка и сердцеед»[8]. 28 марта 2013 года было объявлено, что главную роль получит молодая британская актриса Софи Лоу, а её возлюбленного Сайруса будет играть Питер Гадиот. Майкл Сока сыграет Валета Червей. Барбара Херши получит возможность повторить в спин-оффе свою роль Королевы Червей из основного сериала[9]. Кроме того, в апреле Пол Рубенс был выбран для озвучивания Белого Кролика[10], а роль Красной Королевы отдана Эмме Ригби[11].

10 мая 2013 года телеканал ABC дал пилоту «зелёный свет» и заказал съёмки сериала для трансляции в сезоне 2013/14 годов, а также объявил, что Джон Литгоу заменит Рубенса в озвучивании Белого Кролика. 14 мая 2013 года было объявлено, что спин-офф выпустят в эфир в четверг вечером вместо того, чтобы делать его вставкой в оригинальный сериал[12]. Критика

Отзывы о сериале в целом были благоприятными. На основе 21 отзыва он получил 61 балл из 100 по версии Metacritic[15]. На Rotten Tomatoes сериал получил рейтинг одобрения 63 % на основе 35 обзоров со средней оценкой 6,5 из 10.
