Libraries in our life
The book at all times plays a major role in the development of mankind. With the advent of the first books, libraries began to appear. The libraries store in themselves the knowledge and history of the ages. Their primary function is to transfer accumulated knowledge, experience and cultural values to the future generation. Libraries are the main place where people can get the information they need. But unfortunately, with the advent of the Internet, the role of libraries has significantly decreased, because the global global network is capable of providing the necessary information in a matter of minutes, which saves a lot of time.
Libraries are different, they contain not only books, but also newspapers and magazines. Libraries have their own archives. Distinguish scientific libraries, public, school. There are many specialized libraries that provide technical and reference literature.
Workers of libraries in various ways try to attract readers: they organize literary evenings, organize circles for interests, courses of foreign languages. The library is a unique place with a special atmosphere, filled with knowledge of the whole world. Silence, the ticking of the clock, the rustle of paper — all this is fascinating and soothing. Previously, many people visited libraries to spend their leisure time reading an interesting book. Now, students, schoolchildren, scientists can always find very rare editions in them.
Recently, electronic libraries have appeared, but unfortunately in the electronic form it is not always possible to find the necessary book. Despite the advent of computerization and digital technologies, there are still enough people who want to visit libraries, sit in a quiet room and wrap themselves in the smell of old books. Is not it beautiful?

Раньше многие люди посещали библиотеки чтобы провести свой досуг за чтением интересной книги. Сейчас, студенты, школьники, научные работники всегда могут найти в них очень редкие издания.
Совсем недавно появились электронные библиотеки, но к сожалению в электронном виде не всегда можно найти нужную книгу. Не смотря на появление компьютеризации и цифровых технологий, все ещё есть достаточно желающих посещать библиотеки, посидеть в тихом зале и окутать себя запахом старых книг. Разве это не прекрасно?

Reading is my main hobby. I like reading detectives and classic works of world literature. At home, I have a small library of books, of both native and foreign great authors. I read them all. Now I often go to our university library to find something interesting for me.

It is a good library. A bright spacious room full of different books and magazines. There are few free seats and very noisy as students prepare for classes. Therefore, I prefer taking books home. You can take only several books for month.

Cultural development of a person depends on the visits to such places as theatres, exhibitions and libraries. Libraries play a significant role in the lives of all people who strive for knowledge and self-development. Books are a great source of knowledge of our ancestors and just simple modern writers. The many years’ experience right up to our time is gathered in the books.
Everybody chooses what to read. Someone just ignores the literature, someone prefers to read only the classical literature, and someone likes modern glossy magazines. Tastes differ. However, whatever they say a book is the key to education and high intelligence of the reader.
Library – that is the place where all kinds and genres both in native and foreign languages are gathered. Books on traveling, novels, adventure, fictions — in the library you will find it all and even more.
After your filling in the library card, you can borrow a book you want. What sort of book … search in the catalogue. You can go to the reading room or take the book home. However, be careful with the book! Don’t tear out sheets and do not write anything on the pages. Otherwise you run the risk of paying a big fine.

of humanity. The cultural heritage of mankind has been kept there for
centuries. Throughout the history, libraries have been the centres of scholarship
and art.
First
libraries
The earliest libraries appeared in the ancient Near East in
about 2500 BC and consisted mostly of the clay tablets in cuneiform script.
There were many libraries in Ancient Egypt, including the largest library of
the ancient world in Alexandria.
Modern libraries
In the modern libraries you can find books, newspapers,
periodicals, documents, printed music, maps, CDs and DVDs. There are librarians
who can help you to find the information you need and a reading-room – a quiet
place where you can work or study using library resources.
In some libraries you can also get access to their electronic
resources or the Internet. Today there are libraries in nearly every city, town
or village. Schools, universities and big organizations often have one.
My school
library
There is a library in my school too. It is not very big, but
still there are a lot of interesting and informative books. You can get
educational material as well as imaginative literature there.
Our library has a spacious reading-room; we sometimes have our
Literature lessons there. Our school organizes meetings with writers and
poets of our city which are usually held in the library.
I like borrowing books from my school library. Although we live
in the computer age, and nearly all books can be found on the Internet, I
really enjoy lying on the sofa holding a book in my hands.
I especially like reading science fiction, Russian classics and
adapted English books.

The Word library comes from the Latin word ‘liber’, meaning ‘book’. This is a place where information in print (book, manuscripts, periodicals and musical scores) and in other forms is collected. Libraries can be found in many places. There are libraries in small towns and large cities and there are libraries at schools, universities, colleges. People go to the library to read, look, listen, search, inquire, relax, discuss, learn and think.
The largest and the best known libraries in the world are: the British National library in London, the Library of Congress in Washington and The Russian State Library. The British Library is the largest state library in Britain and is one of the finest libraries in the world. It is a rapidly growing modern research library with all its current publications. People who want to read for higher degrees and who are engaged in research in their spare time visit this library. Other library which is known throughout the world is the Library of Congress. It was established as a reference library in 1600 and gradually would come a world famous institution that now occupies three huge buildings.
A great number of items in collections of books, newspapers, periodicals, manuscripts, films, maps and works of drama, music, art and important and exciting documents from American history are kept in library’s archives. There are materials on practically every subject to which members of Congress can refer. And now I would tell you about Lenin State Library. The Lenin Library is the central library and is one of the world’s largest. The old library building was built in 1786 on a hill opposite the Kremlin by Vasily Bashenov and was a typical example of a Moscow town residence of that time. Its new buildings were built in 1940. When the library was founded in 1961, it contained over 1000.000 volumes, and was then located in the old Pashkov part of the complex. In 1915 its one reading room had a sitting capacity of only 170. Now it has 23 reading rooms of 2500 seating capacities and a book fund of 27 millions. There a wide choice of books: fiction, non-fiction, serious books, detective stories, science fiction, biographic, history and encyclopedias which are extremely useful in work, because it gives information about every branch of knowledge. Of cource there is a catalogue of books.
The titles and authors of all the books in the library can be found in a card catalogue or a computer listing. Each card in catalogue gives very helpful information about the book; the title send the author, the time and place of publication and the even something about it contents. The library is used daily by around 10000 people. Most librarians have a professionally staff whose first duty is to help you.
Librarians also select books and other materials, organize materials so that you can easily use them, answer questions about facts, people, events, or advise you how to find the information you need. The library today is a centre for all kinds of communications: printed, pictured, recorded and even electronically stored.

I think libraries are very important in the life of all people. And it’s no wonder because it is there that we can take out any book we want to read.
There are libraries in every town and village in our country. There are libraries for grown-ups and libraries for children. And every school has a library too.
Аs for me I like to go to the library to borrow new books to read. As a rule I take out two or three books at a time and keep them for two weeks. And it doesn’t matter what kind of book it is. It can be a collection of short stories, a book of poems, adventures or detectives. I equally enjoy them all.
But there is one thing that matters when I choose a book for reading — it mustn’t be dull, but interesting. So my favourite books are: Hunters Smiles by O.Vishnya and «Othello» by W.Shakespear.
I usually borrow books from our school library. I must say that our library is rich in books and our librarian is always ready to help us in choosing books. There are adventure stories, historical novels, tales, classics, poems on the shelves of our library.
There is also a wide choice of books on geography, chemistry, physics, maths and other subjects on the shelves of our library. I know they are popular with the senior pupils of our school, junior pupils prefer short stories and tales.
There is a small reading-room in our library. we can read newspapers, magazines and books sitting at the tables. So I think books are very important in our life, and it’s no wonder because they teach us to work and live. We can learn a lot from them. In a word books are our friends.
