На стриминговом сервисе more.tv 29 апреля стартует четвёртый сезон «Рассказа служанки». За основу для сериала создатели взяли одноимённый роман канадской писательницы Маргарет Этвуд. Правда, по книге сняли только первый сезон, а дальше сюжет строился с опорой на фантазию сценаристов.
Для начала напомним фабулу. В недалёком будущем люди сталкиваются с серьёзной проблемой: в мире рождается всё меньше детей. Вдобавок власть в США захватывают религиозные фанатики. Они переименовали страну в республику Галаад и установили там свои порядки, основанные на жестокости и полном пренебрежении к правам человека.
Тех, кто не успел сбежать в Канаду, казнили, а женщинам запретили работать и вести самостоятельную жизнь. Общество поделили на касты, немногих же фертильных девушек под страхом смерти заставили рожать для важных чиновников и их жён. Такие несчастные в галаадском обществе называются служанками.
Среди служанок оказывается совершенно обычная женщина Джун Осборн, которая во время переворота вместе с мужем Люком и дочерью Ханной пыталась сбежать, но на полпути попалась на глаза соглядатаям. Люку впоследствии удалось скрыться, а вот Джун поймали, отобрали у неё дочь, нарядили в красную униформу и отдали в семью Фреда Уотерфорда. Однако девушка не смогла привыкнуть к новой роли и постоянно думает, как ей выбраться из плена.
Осторожно, дальнейший текст содержит спойлеры к событиям второго и третьего сезонов.
Во втором сезоне Джун беременеет и несколько раз пытается покинуть Галаад, но терпит неудачу. Зато у неё получается вывезти из страны свою новорождённую девочку. Сама же она остаётся, чтобы спасти и старшего ребёнка.
После этого героиню переводят к новому патрону — командору Лоуренсу. Он помогает ей вытащить из Галаада несколько десятков детей. Операция проходит успешно, но самой Джун опять не удаётся выбраться. На этом заканчивается третий сезон.
Первая серия четвёртого сезона сразу начинается в Галааде, где раненую Джун находят беглые служанки. Они выносят женщину из леса и выхаживают её. Оправившись, героиня возглавляет сопротивление. И у неё с подругами даже получается навредить посетителям борделя «Иезавель», куда отправляют неугодных режиму девушек.
Но потом Джун снова ловят и пытают, чтобы та выдала место, где прячутся её союзницы. Тем временем канадским друзьям героини приходится столкнуться с непредвиденными последствиями её решений.
Вместо запоминающихся визуальных решений — череда тёмных сцен
По сравнению с первыми сезонами визуальная подача очень сильно поменялась. Когда сериал только начинался, авторы всячески пытались акцентировать, что перед зрителями антиутопия. Поэтому в кадре было много геометрических фигур, прямых линий, чёткости и симметрии. Радовала и цветовая стилистика: в Галааде жители делятся на касты, и красные робы служанок, как и бирюзовые наряды жён, ярким пятном выделялись на общем серо-чёрном фоне.
Не меньше впечатляли сцены, снятые с высоты птичьего полёта, в которых служанки ходили строем. Эти завораживающие кадры лишний раз подчёркивали, что действия жителей Галаада срежиссированы, словно в каком-то жутком театре.
Однако начиная со второго сезона сериал стал постепенно изменяться. Сцен, снятых с высоты, становилось всё меньше. Им на смену пришли крупные планы лиц. Цветовые решения тоже не остались прежними: теперь в кадре было не так много красных роб, зато стало больше пыли, мрака и грязи.
Наконец, в четвёртом сезоне создатели пришли к такому тёмному визуальному ряду, что силуэты героев едва различимы на экране. По сравнению со старыми сериями даже создаётся впечатление, что новые эпизоды специально снимали в каких-то ужасно тусклых помещениях, чтобы позлить зрителей.
Хотя, если вдуматься, этому можно найти объяснение: из-за коронавируса четвёртый сезон создавался в очень сложных условиях. На площадке не могло находиться много людей одновременно. Возможно, именно поэтому в сериале так мало воздуха и открытых пространств, а в кадре совсем мало актёров.
«Пыточное порно» и бессмысленная жестокость
Ещё в первом сезоне было полно кровавых и жестоких сцен. Например, одну из героинь (правда, за кадром) лишали глаза, а другую за непослушание наказали калечащей операцией на половых органах. Но всё это было оправданно, ведь до аудитории требовалось донести, что в Галааде с людьми действительно обходятся сурово, без лишних сантиментов.
Только вот авторы, похоже, совсем не знают меры и идут на всё, лишь бы показать страдания главной героини. В конце концов «Рассказ служанки» превратился в сериал ужасов, откровенно смакующий насилие, пытки и увечья.
Надежда, что в новом сезоне сценаристы обойдутся без «пыточного порно», испаряется сразу. Потому что первый же эпизод начинается с того, что девушки прижигают открытую рану Джун чем-то вроде прибора для завивки волос.
Большую часть третьей серии вообще отдали жестокому допросу героини. Проблема в том, что когда на экране столько бессмысленного насилия, то страдания и смерти персонажей просто обесцениваются и не вызывают таких эмоций, как прежде. Сопереживать становится всё сложнее.
Доходит до смешного: в одном из эпизодов фоновых героев просто сбивает поезд. Всё потому, что по сюжету дальше Джун и её подруга должны путешествовать вдвоём.
Одни и те же сюжетные повороты и неуязвимая Джун
В конце первого сезона хотелось верить, что героиня страдает не зря и её злоключения рано или поздно закончатся. Но с каждой новой серией ситуация становилась лишь острее, а положение героини — всё более беспросветным. Причём развитие сюжета происходило по одной и той же схеме: Джун пыталась вырваться из Галаада, но раз за разом её останавливали. Иногда это случалось даже несколько раз за сезон и при самых невероятных обстоятельствах.
В четвёртом сезоне авторы как будто немного ослабляют хватку, так что персонажам даже время от времени удаётся выходить победителями. Но слишком долгое ожидание сводит радость от того, что у Джун хоть что-то пошло по плану, к нулю. Тем более что сразу за этим героиня снова попадается. И это вызывает лишь досаду: «Да сколько можно уже!»
Мир Галаада, очевидно, фантастический, но всё-таки пугающим его делал именно мрачный реализм. Теперь же последний уступил место откровенной неправдоподобности. Вот Джун каким-то чудом выживает после жуткого ранения, вслед за чем её сразу хватают и истязают. Но после пыток она находится в добром здравии и готова бороться. Затем героиня вместе с подругой барахтается внутри огромной автоцистерны с молоком. Но, выбравшись оттуда, чувствует себя совсем неплохо.
В общем, теперь девушка напоминает героев боевиков: в прямом смысле и в воде не тонет, и в огне не горит. Может быть, сценаристы таким образом пытались сказать, что женщины способны на многое. Но это и так понятно. А вот сочувствовать этой неубиваемой героине куда сложнее, чем слабой и уязвимой Джун из первого сезона.
К четвёртому сезону «Рассказа служанки» авторы окончательно махнули рукой на социальную драму и сделали из сериала очень неправдоподобный слэшер. Смотреть его не только неприятно из-за отталкивающих сцен, но и скучно, потому что визуально мир Галаада стал совсем тёмным и невыразительным. Да и жестокость теперь показывают лишь ради самой жестокости — и это самое обидное.

Долгожданная премьера 4 сезона сериала «Рассказ служанки» состоится уже 29 апреля на платформе more.tv. Киноафиша рассказывает, какое продолжение принимает знакомая история.
В 2017 году на свет появился, а точнее сказать, стремительно ворвался на платформу Hulu сериал-дистопия «Рассказ служанки». Сюжет изначально основан на одноименном романе 1985 года писательницы Маргарет Этвуд, и повествуется в нем история служанки Джун Осборн в тоталитарном государстве Галаад. Там порабощают фертильных женщин, чтобы производить на свет детей и передавать их состоятельным парам. Без лишней скромности шоу вызвало резонанс в обществе, особенно американском, где выход сериала совпал с началом правления Трампа и набирающим обороты движением #MeToo. Да и критики по достоинству оценили проект: в сумме сериал за первый сезон получил 8 статуэток «Эмми».
Третий сезон заканчивается тем, что раненая Джун (Элизабет Мосс) с улыбкой смотрит, как самолет с 86 детьми и 9 марфами улетает в Канаду. Остальные служанки-последовательницы Джун подбегают на помощь и коллективно уносят ее подальше от опасности. В Торонто у Серены (Ивонн Страховски) отбирают малышку Николь и арестовывают миссис Уотерфорд за все ее бесчеловечные деяния в Галааде. Люк (О. Т. Фагбенли), муж Джун, не находит среди спасшихся детей дочку Ханну.
Почти два года после финала третьего сезона (потому что коронавирус решил помучать всех сериальных фанатов) мы продолжаем с того места, на котором остановились. С первых же минут зрителей приветствует свойственная шоу ретромузыка и замедленная драматичная съемка. Джун, безусловно, так и остается эпицентром событий со знакомым нам рвением восстановить справедливость в мире. Даже если героиня и дает слабину в начале, то совсем ненадолго. Она вместе с остальными служанками укрывается от охранительных сил Галаада. Тут же мы получаем и весточку из Канады, где Серена (или Яснорада) и Фред (Джозеф Файнс) не могут решить между собой, кто из них плохой, а кто еще хуже.
Вообще стоит ожидать того, что в 4 сезоне сюжетный фокус расширится, так как половина героев перебралась в Канаду. И в Торонто, помимо Фреда и Серены, мы воссоединимся с Мойрой (Самира Уайли) и Эмили (Алексис Бледел), которые продолжают дело Джун на безопасной территории. Прибывшая на спасительном самолете марфа Рита (Аманда Бругел) пытается свыкнуться с новообретенной свободой, но сталкивается с ожидаемыми трудностями. Более того, поднимается важная тема адаптации прилетевших в Канаду детей к новой реальности, ведь, по сути, их забрали из родных домов и единственной знакомой среды. Надежды Люка на воссоединение с семьей становятся все слабее, и он уже не может рационально объяснить для себя рвение Джун остаться в Галааде.
Но если героям в Канаде бывает непросто, то это не сравнится с испытаниями по выживанию служанок в Галааде. Для Джун важным будет знакомство с новой героиней — миссис Кейс (Маккенна Грейс), совсем молодой женой командора. Девочка напомнит служанке, от какой судьбы так стремится она спасти дочь Ханну. В Галааде жизнь не сладка ни для кого, разве что для мужчин на верхушке власти, к которым уже и безжалостная Лидия (Энн Дауд) испытывает видимое отвращение. И даже герои мужского пола, которых мы считаем положительными в истории (например, Лоуренс и Ник), не сильно рвутся предпринимать решительные действия. Мысли и реальные намерения Ника (Макс Мингелла) вообще таятся за семью печатями, да он и сам до собственной истины никак не доберется. В одной из сцен герой сидит в дорогом кабинете с Лоуренсом (Брэдли Уитфорд) и искренне заявляет, что хочет «сохранить жизнь Джун», но это желание делает все его поступки пока что немного эгоистичными и незаслуживающими большого восхищения.
Сюжет развивается в размеренном темпе и не нужно ожидать, что через одну серию все встанет на желаемые места. Но не спешите объявлять небыстрое раскрытие истории изъяном сериала. Наоборот, такой темп дает время поставить ряд важных вопросов о судьбе героев. Сможет ли Джун не потерять себя в погоне за местью? Есть ли у Лидии сожаления по поводу созданного режима в Галааде? На чьей стороне все-таки Ник? Будет ли совершено над Сереной и Фредом правосудие? Удастся ли спасти Ханну? Выпуск сразу трех премьерных эпизодов делает осознанную ставку на то, что именно после суммарного просмотра выстроится траектория четвертого сезона. И тут важно отметить третий эпизод, режиссером которого выступила не кто иная, как главная актриса сериала Элизабет Мосс. Именно эта серия задаст и стилистический, и сюжетный тон новому сезону.
Самое серьезное опасение пока что заключается в сольном рвении Джун действительно сделать переворот в устоявшейся системе. Мы можем критиковать ее поступки, однако границы правильного и неправильного в рамках Галаада давно стерты. Правда, стоит отметить, что жажда мести героини наполнена категоричностью, и цель не всегда оправдывает жестокие средства. Конечно, за нее горой стоят служанки, но ни политические власти Канады, ни здравомыслящие представители влиятельного класса Галаада в лице Ника и Лоуренса не выражают рвение что-то изменить. Однако надежда есть всегда, особенно на перспективный и более тесный союз Джун и Джанин (Мадлен Брюэр): динамика их отношений всегда была одной из самых сильных сюжетных и эмоциональных сторон сериала.
Четвертый сезон стартует размеренно, но уверенно и дает почву для развития практически каждому герою и новым сюжетным аркам. Третий эпизод однозначно пошлет некий привет в прошлое со знакомыми нам и еще более изощрёнными формами насилия Галаада и сделает превью в интересное будущее сериала, а оно определенно будет (проект уже продлили на пятый сезон). Главное, чтобы сериал поскорее вырвался из знакомого и начал постигать неизведанное.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 ends with June Osborne killing Fred Waterford; here’s everything that happens to reach that point, and what it means. The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 has been one of change. While the show initially seemed to be trapped in a cycle of repetitive storytelling and graphic violence, it was able to break free of that rigid structure with one of its biggest moves yet: June’s escape from Gilead into Canada, which flipped the show on its head.
For so long, June had been fighting to survive within Gilead, but now she was given a chance to do much more. She can live her life, while continuing to fight not only for her own survival, but for justice. That, however, is not an easy thing to come by, as June learned in The Handmaid’s Tale season 4, episode 9,»Progress,» when the United States struck a deal to work with Fred against Gilead. June, of course, was never going to just let that happen, though it wasn’t immediately obvious just what that entailed.
The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 finale deals with the fallout of that decision, and June’s attempts to reverse it. Pulling in favors from just about everyone she knows, June does whatever it takes in order to stop Fred from becoming a free man, and to get if not justice, then at least revenge. It makes for an ending that’s shocking, emotional, and satisfying, with plenty to unpack and lots that will leave its mark on the show until its very end.
Why June & The Handmaids Kill Fred Waterford
The death of Fred Waterford is one of The Handmaid’s Tale‘s biggest ever moments, but it’s one that’s been a long time coming. As one of the architects of Gilead and the principal abuser of June (and countless other women thanks to the regime he helped create), then his being killed is a development that has long seemed deserved. It connects to how much damage Gilead has caused, and the lingering impact upon June and others that the Commanders have. Fred committed atrocities and could not be let off the hook, which is what Mark Tuello and the United States initially intended to let happen, and so June had to take matters into her own hands.
June could have simply allowed for Gilead to take Fred back, which is what the deal with Commander Lawrence setup. Fred had given away Gilead secrets, he had betrayed the Republic, and so he would have been put on trial as a traitor to his country, which at the very least would’ve meant being confined to a prison cell, if not his death. But Lawrence himself told June that it wouldn’t be enough. That no matter what Gilead did, it would never be enough. Since arriving in Canada, June has struggled with a rage that has threatened to consume her, and it stems from the actions of the Waterfords. Because of the trauma they have caused, then June believes she cannot be free while Fred is still alive. As she tells Emily, she needs him to know the fear that he made her suffer, which is why she not only has to kill him, but do so in the manner she does, having him chased by a group of former Handmaids and brutally murdered by them (which itself calls back to the Particicution ceremonies of Gilead, but puts the women fully in control — doing their bidding, not that of other men).
For the other Handmaids, too, this is a sense of catharsis. Waterford may not have been their Commander, but they all had one just like him. To Emily and the others, this is revenge not only for June, who has already become their leader, but vengeance for everything they and all the rest of Gilead’s Handmaids, Marthas, and everyone else had to survive. Even then, Fred only suffered a fraction of what they did, given how quickly it was over — unlike June, he did not spend years being tormented. Morally, it’s easy to wonder whether June went too far, a question The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 has already raised a few times. It’s uncomfortable viewing, and deliberately so. But, given her trauma and not being able to trust the legal processes on either side of the border to deliver the justice and peace necessary, it’s apparent that killing Fred was the only choice June could make.
Why Nick & Commander Lawrence Help June: Gilead’s Role In Fred’s Death Explained
June’s role in Fred’s death is clear, but what about Gilead’s? The motivations of the regime, and in particular Commander Lawrence, are once again a little harder to parse. Gilead could have had its once prodigal son returned home, and many would likely believe that Fred was theirs to decide what to do with, and that he ought to face trial in the country. Fred won’t necessarily be missed — it was already revealed that Gilead had given up on the Waterfords anyway — but the decision made by Lawrence is an interesting one. His character motivations have long been unclear: he is, seemingly, a decent person who regrets what Gilead became, but who has not fully committed to turning against it or bringing it down. Even this doesn’t completely spell things out, because he seemingly does it more out of loyalty to June than as part of a great Gileadan plot. Whether the other powers-that-be of Gilead were aware isn’t revealed, but given Lawrence himself has to pretend to be surprised at Nick and the Eyes taking Fred away, then it’s likely this wasn’t part of the «plan» as they knew it. For Gilead, Fred’s death may not change much: he was of no use to the country, and it means he can no longer spill anymore secrets, so it’s perhaps a welcome course of action.
Nick’s role in things is more straightforward. The character has often been torn between his love for June and his duty to Gilead — essentially, split between «Nick» and «Commander Blaine» — and he hasn’t always made the right call, such as bombing Chicago when June was there. Here, though, he makes a choice to stand with June, and to use his power and influence in Gilead to help her get exactly what she wants. The kiss between Nick and June solidifies that he’ll do whatever he can to help her because his love does outweigh what he owes Gilead, but it remains to be seen what the future holds. That kiss could also be seen as a parting between them, but with June’s own future unclear, then it’s not impossible she and Nick will meet again somehow.
Is June Being Punished For Killing Fred (What Happens To Luke & Nichole)?
June’s fate and future is left deliberately ambiguous in The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 finale, but the final scene she has suggests that killing Fred Waterford has come at an extremely high cost. She spends time with Nichole in her bedroom, when she’s encountered by Luke, looking like a broken shell. June explains she is just having five minutes with her daughter and then she’ll go, but it’s not explained what that means. Is June being punished for killing Fred? It is possible that she will eventually be, but since the death occurred in No Man’s Land, then there’s no obvious jurisdiction for a murder charge. Showrunner Bruce Miller told Variety that people don’t know about Fred’s death yet, so she isn’t being arrested right now.
Nonetheless, it seems this is what breaks June and Luke apart, at least for now. Ever since June arrived in Canada, they have attempted to reconnect as a couple, but things have never quite clicked. Luke has been frustrated in his inability to understand what June went through, and she has been overcome by her own anger, which has sometimes been directed at him. Even without murdering Fred, their road ahead was complicated. But now that June has killed someone, and done so as a calculated act of vengeance, then that is something Luke may be struggling to deal with (and understandably so).
It wouldn’t be too much of a surprise if he wanted her nowhere near himself or their daughter, believing her too dangerous and needing to live with herself before she can live with them. June and Luke’s future will still be entwined in some way — they have Nichole, and Hannah remains in Gilead — so they will have to come back together eventually, but whether they can ever repair that bond and be a married couple again is left in serious doubt. For June herself, the decision also harks back to her conversation with Emily earlier in the episode, where she discussed having to let go of Nichole to be a good mother. Emily very pointedly did not correct her, and June has reached a point of self-realization, knowing that the best thing for herself, Nichole, and Luke is time and space because she still has so much she is learning to come to terms with.
What Happens To Serena Joy Waterford Now (& Why June Sends Her Fred’s Finger)?
While the fate of one Waterford is forever sealed, the other remains much more uncertain. Serena Joy is left waiting in Canada for a Zoom call that is never going to happen (and one that she seemingly doesn’t really want), but what will now become of her? Serena remains a prisoner, and her best chance at freedom — with Fred’s testimony in Geneva — has been killed. It’s possible that she could simply be jailed permanently, which her crimes would be deserving of, but it’s possible she could still strike a deal. The US and Canada may have lost Fred, but Serena can also provide a lot of evidence about the inner workings of Gilead, something she’d ordinarily have no qualms about doing.
That she has been sent her husband’s finger — and wedding ring — is something of a warning though. June reacted the way she did because Fred was going to escape justice, and the message that sends is Serena will not be allowed to try and pursue a similar opportunity. It connects to how much damage Gilead has caused, and the lingering impact upon June and others that the Commanders have. Fred committed atrocities and could not be let off the hook, which is what Mark Tuello and the United States initially intended to let happen, and so June had to take matters into her own hands.
June could have simply allowed for Gilead to take Fred back, which is what the deal with Commander Lawrence setup. Fred had given away Gilead secrets, he had betrayed the Republic, and so he would have been put on trial as a traitor to his country, which at the very least would’ve meant being confined to a prison cell, if not his death. But Lawrence himself told June that it wouldn’t be enough. That no matter what Gilead did, it would never be enough. Since arriving in Canada, June has struggled with a rage that has threatened to consume her, and it stems from the actions of the Waterfords. Because of the trauma they have caused, then June believes she cannot be free while Fred is still alive. As she tells Emily, she needs him to know the fear that he made her suffer, which is why she not only has to kill him, but do so in the manner she does, having him chased by a group of former Handmaids and brutally murdered by them (which itself calls back to the Particicution ceremonies of Gilead, but puts the women fully in control — doing their bidding, not that of other men).
For the other Handmaids, too, this is a sense of catharsis. Waterford may not have been their Commander, but they all had one just like him. June’s role in Fred’s death is clear, but what about Gilead’s? The motivations of the regime, and in particular Commander Lawrence, are once again a little harder to parse. Gilead could have had its once prodigal son returned home, and many would likely believe that Fred was theirs to decide what to do with, and that he ought to face trial in the country. Fred won’t necessarily be missed — it was already revealed that Gilead had given up on the Waterfords anyway — but the decision made by Lawrence is an interesting one. His character motivations have long been unclear: he is, seemingly, a decent person who regrets what Gilead became, but who has not fully committed to turning against it or bringing it down. Even this doesn’t completely spell things out, because he seemingly does it more out of loyalty to June than as part of a great Gileadan plot. Whether the other powers-that-be of Gilead were aware isn’t revealed, but given Lawrence himself has to pretend to be surprised at Nick and the Eyes taking Fred away, then it’s likely this wasn’t part of the «plan» as they knew it. For Gilead, Fred’s death may not change much: he was of no use to the country, and it means he can no longer spill anymore secrets, so it’s perhaps a welcome course of action.
Nick’s role in things is more straightforward. The character has often been torn between his love for June and his duty to Gilead — essentially, split between «Nick» and «Commander Blaine» — and he hasn’t always made the right call, such as bombing Chicago when June was there. Here, though, he makes a choice to stand with June, and to use his power and influence in Gilead to help her get exactly what she wants. The kiss between Nick and June solidifies that he’ll do whatever he can to help her because his love does outweigh what he owes Gilead, but it remains to be seen what the future holds. That kiss could also be seen as a parting between them, but with June’s own future unclear, then it’s not impossible she and Nick will meet again somehow.
