Давненько уж это было – тысячи две лет тому назад. Жил да был на свете богатый человек, и жена у него была красивая и богобоязненная, и любили они друг друга сердечно, а детей у них не было. Очень им хотелось иметь детей; и жена молилась об этом и день, и ночь, а детей все же не было и не было…
Перед домом их был двор; среди того двора росло ветвистое дерево, и под тем деревом однажды зимою стояла жена и срезала ножом кожуру с яблока. Срезала да и порезала себе ножом пальчик, так что кровь закапала на снег. „Ах! – сказала жена и глубоко вздохнула, и, взглянув на капли крови, проговорила с грустью: – Вот если бы у меня было такое дитятко: как кровь румяное да как снег белое!“
И как только она это выговорила, у ней вдруг так полегчало на душе, как будто ее желанию суждено было действительно сбыться, и она пошла домой совсем утешенная.
Прошло с той поры около года. Жена все недомогала и, жалуясь на свое здоровье, не раз говаривала мужу: „Если я умру, похорони меня под тем деревом, что растет у нас среди двора.“
В конце года она родила сына, белого как снег и румяного как кровь, и когда она его увидела, то обрадовалась так, что с радости и умерла. Муж похоронил жену по ее желанию под тем деревом, что росло среди двора, и очень ее оплакивал; немного спустя он стал уже меньше по ней плакать, а там и совсем перестал; а еще сколько-то времени спустя взял себе в дом другую жену.
От второй жены родилась дочка, а от первой жены остался хорошенький сынок, румяный как кровь и белый как снег.
Когда мачеха смотрела на свою дочку, она казалась ей милым дитятком, а как взглянет, бывало, на своего хорошенького пасынка, у ней так и кольнет в сердце – тотчас придет ей в голову, что он ей поперек дороги стал, и кабы не он, все богатство отца досталось бы ее дочери.
И стала она на своего хорошенького пасынка злиться, и стала его толкать из угла в угол: и тут щипнет, и там щипнет, так что бедное дитя жило в постоянном страхе. И когда он возвращался домой из школы, у него не было ни одной минуты покоя.
Однажды мачеха пошла в свою светелку, и ее хорошенькая дочка пришла к ней и сказала: „Матушка, дай мне яблочко.“ – „Изволь, дитятко,“ – сказала ей мать и дала ей чудесное яблоко из сундука своего; а у сундука-то крышка была тяжелая-претяжелая, и замок у ней большой, железный, с острыми зубцами. „Матушка, – сказала хорошенькая девочка, – ты и братцу тоже дашь яблочко?“ Это раздосадовало ее мать, однако же она сдержалась и сказала: „И ему дам, когда он придет из школы.“
И как раз в это время увидела из окошка, что пасынок возвращается домой; тут ее словно бес под руку толкнул, она отняла у дочки яблоко и сказала: „И тебе прежде брата не дам.“ Швырнула яблоко в сундук и закрыла его крышкой.
Когда пасынок вошел в дверь, нечистый наставил ее ласково сказать ему: „Сыночек! Не хочешь ли ты получить от меня яблоко?“ А сама посмотрела на него искоса. „Матушка, – сказал мальчик, – что ты это так на меня смотришь? Хорошо, дай мне яблочко!“ – „Пойдем со мной, – сказала она и открыла крышку сундука. – Вот, выбирай любое.“
И когда мальчик нагнулся над сундуком, бес и толкни ее под руку – р-раз! – она захлопнула крышку с такою силою, что голова мальчика отскочила от туловища и упала среди румяных яблок. Тут она перепугалась и стала думать: „Как бы мне это с себя свалить?“ И вот зашла она в свою комнату, вынула из ящика белый платок, опять приставила голову к туловищу, обвязала мертвому пасынку шею так, что ничего не было заметно, и посадила его на стул перед дверьми, а в руку дала ему яблоко.
Немного спустя пришла дочь к матери в кухню и увидела, что мать стоит перед огнем, а перед нею лохань с горячей водой, в которой она что-то полощет. „Матушка, – сказала дочка, – братец сидит перед дверьми бледный-пребледный и держит в руке яблоко; я было попросила его, чтобы он мне яблочко дал, но он мне ничего не ответил, и мне стало страшно.“ – „А ты ступай к нему еще раз, – сказала мать, – и если он тебе ничего не ответит, дай ему по уху.“ Дочка и точно пошла и сказала: „Братец, дай мне яблочко.“ Но он ничего не ответил ей. Тогда она ударила его по уху, и голова его свалилась с плеч.
Девочка страшно перепугалась и начала плакать и кричать, и побежала к матери своей. „Ах, матушка, я сбила голову моему братцу!“ – и плакала, и плакала, и не могла утешиться. „Доченька, – сказала мать, – что ты наделала? Но теперь-то уж замолчи, чтобы никто этого не знал; ведь теперь уж этого не воротишь! Давай разварим его в студень.“
И взяла мачеха своего мертвого пасынка, разрубила его на куски, положила его в лохань и разварила в студень. А дочь ее при этом стояла и плакала, и плакала, и все слезы ее падали в лохань, так что даже и соли в студень не понадобилось класть.
Вот вернулся отец домой, сел за стол и сказал: „А где же мой сын?“ А мать принесла на стол большущее блюдо студня, между тем как дочка ее все плакала и плакала, и никак не могла удержаться от слез.
Отец между тем спросил еще раз: „Да где же мой сын?“ Мачеха отвечала: „Он ушел в гости к своему деду; там хотел он некоторое время остаться.“ – „Да что ему там делать? Ушел, даже и не простился со мной?“ – „О, ему очень хотелось туда пойти, и он у меня просил позволения остаться там эту неделю: его ведь все там ласкают.“ – „А все же, – сказал отец, – мне очень жаль, что он не простился со мною.“
С этими словами он принялся за еду и сказал дочке: „Что ты плачешь? Ведь братец-то твой вернется же! – потом, обратясь к жене, добавил: – Жена! Какое ты мне подала вкусное блюдо! Подбавь-ка мне еще!“ И чем более он ел, тем более хотелось ему еще и еще, и он все приговаривал: „Подкладывай больше, пусть ничего на блюде не останется!“ И все-то ел, ел, а косточки все под стол метал – и, наконец, съел всё дочиста.
А дочка его достала из комода свой лучший шелковый платочек, сложила в него из-под стола все косточки и хрящики и понесла вон из дома, обливаясь горькими слезами.
Выйдя на средину двора, она положила косточки в платочек под дерево, что там росло, на зеленую травочку, и у ней стало легко на сердце, и слезы ее иссякли.
И увидела она, что дерево вдруг зашевелилось – ветви его стали расходиться и сходиться, словно руки у человека, когда он от радости начинает размахивать руками и хлопать в ладоши.
Затем от дерева отделился как бы легкий туман, а среди тумана блистал и огонь, и из этого-то огня вылетела чудная птица и запела чудную песенку, и высоко-высоко поднялась в воздух.
Когда же она совсем исчезла из виду, тогда и ветви на дереве перестали двигаться, и платок с косточками, что лежал под деревом, пропал бесследно.
А у сестрицы на душе стало так легко и приятно, как если бы братец ее был еще в живых. И она вернулась домой веселая, села за стол и стала есть.
Птица полетела и села на дом золотых дел мастера, и стала петь свою песенку:
Меня мачеха убила,
Мой отец меня же съел. Моя милая сестричка
Мои косточки собрала,
Во платочек их связала
И под деревцем сложила. Чивик, чивик! Что я за славная птичка!
Мастер сидел в своей мастерской и делал золотую цепь, когда услышал птичку, которая пела на крыше дома, и песенка показалась ему очень привлекательной.
Он поднялся со своего места, и когда сошел сверху вниз, то потерял одну туфлю. Так он и на середину улицы вышел в одной туфле и в одном носке, опоясанный фартуком, с золотой цепью в одной руке, с клещами в другой…
А солнце-то так и светило на улице! Вот он и стал как вкопанный, и давай смотреть на птичку. „Птичка, – сказал он, – как ты славно поешь! Спой-ка мне еще раз свою песенку!“ – „Нет, – сказала птичка, – я дважды даром петь не стану. Дай мне эту золотую цепочку, тогда я тебе и еще раз спою мою песенку.“ – „Вот, на тебе золотую цепь; только спой мне еще раз.“
Тогда подлетела птичка, взяла золотую цепь в правую лапку, села против мастера и запела:
Меня мачеха убила,
Мой отец меня же съел. Моя милая сестричка
Мои косточки собрала,
Во платочек их связала
И под деревцем сложила. Чивик, чивик! Что я за славная птичка!
Оттуда полетела птичка к башмачнику, присела к нему на крышу и запела:

Башмачник услышал песенку, выбежал из дому в одном жилете и стал смотреть на крышу, прикрывая ладонью глаза от солнца. „Птичка, – сказал он, – да как же ты славно поешь! – И жену башмачник вызвал из дома: – Поди-ка сюда, глянь-ка на птичку! Вот так птичка, как отлично распевает!“ Потом позвал он и дочь свою, и детей, и подмастерьев, и работников, и служанку, и все вышли на улицу и смотрели на птицу, и любовались ею.
А птичка была и точно красивая: перышки на ней красные и зеленые, а около шейки – словно чистое золото, а глазки у ней блистали как звездочки.
„Птичка, – сказал башмачник, – спой ты мне свою песенку еще раз.“ – „Нет, – сказала птичка, – дважды я не пою даром. Подари мне что-нибудь.“ – „Жена, – приказал башмачник, – ступай ко мне в мастерскую; там стоит у меня пара совсем готовых красных башмаков, принеси их мне сюда.“
Жена пошла и принесла башмаки. „Вот тебе, птичка! – сказал башмачник. – Ну, а теперь спой мне свою песенку.“
Птичка слетела, взяла у него башмаки в левую лапку, потом опять взлетела на крышу и запела:
Меня мачеха убила,
Мой отец меня же съел. Моя милая сестричка
Мои косточки собрала,
Во платочек их связала
И под деревцем сложила. Чивик, чивик! Что я за славная птичка!
А пропевши песенку, птичка полетела: цепочку держала она в когтях правой лапки, а башмаки – в когтях левой лапки, и прилетела она прямо на мельницу, которая работала на полном ходу и постукивала так: плики-пляки, плики-пляки, плики-пляки.
Да на мельнице же сидело человек двадцать рабочих, которые обтесывали жерновой камень и выбивали молотками: тик-так, тик-так, тик-так – и мельница вторила их работе своим постукиваньем.
Птичка опустилась на липу, которая росла у самой мельницы, и запела:
Меня мачеха убила…
Один рабочий перестал работать. Мой отец меня же съел.
Еще двое от работы отстали и прислушались…
Моя милая сестричка…
Еще четверо бросили работу…
Мои косточки собрала,
Во платочек их связала…
Уж только восьмеро остались при деле.
И под деревцем…
Уж только шестеро осталось…
… сложила…
Только один продолжал работу…
Чивик, чивик! Что я за славная птичка!
Тут уж и последний отстал и тоже стал слушать. „Птичка, – сказал он, – как ты славно поешь! Дай и мне тоже послушать, спой еще раз!“ – „Нет, – отвечала птица, – дважды не стану петь даром; дай мне жернов, так я еще раз тебе спою.“ – „Да, – сказал он, – если бы жернов мне одному принадлежал, ты бы его получила.“ – „Да, – сказали другие, – если она нам еще раз споет, то мы отдадим ей жернов.“
Тогда птичка слетела вниз, а все двадцать рабочих стали приподнимать жернов и покрикивать: „У-у-ух, у-ух, ухнем! ух!“
А птичка только продела голову в отверстие жернова, вздела его на шею, как воротник, и вместе с ним взлетела на дерево и запела:
Меня мачеха убила,
Мой отец меня же съел. Моя милая сестричка
Мои косточки собрала,
Во платочек их связала
И под деревцем сложила. Чивик, чивик! Что я за славная птичка!
А пропев свою песенку, она расправила крылышки и, держа в когтях правой лапки цепочку, в когтях левой – пару красных башмаков, а на шее – жернов, полетела вдаль, к дому отца своего.
В доме за столом сидели отец, дочка и мачеха, и отец говорил им: „Что это значит, что у меня сегодня так легко, так весело на сердце?“ – „Нет, – сказала мачеха, – мне что-то страшно, словно бы гроза большая надвигается.“ А дочка сидела и все плакала да плакала.
Тут как раз прилетела птичка и села на крышу. „Ах, – сказал отец, – мне так весело, и солнце так прекрасно светит, и на душе у меня так хорошо, как будто мне предстоит увидеться со старым знакомцем.“ – „Нет, – сказала жена, – страшно мне, страшно, так что зуб на зуб навести не могу, а жилах у меня словно огонь.“
Дочка же тем временем села в угол и стала плакать еще пуще, и прикрывала глаза руками, и ладони рук ее были совсем мокры.
Птичка между тем уселась на дерево среди двора и стала петь:
Меня мачеха убила…
Мачеха, услышав это, заткнула уши и зажмурила глаза, не желая ничего ни видеть, ни слышать, но в ушах ее все же был шум, как от сильнейшей бури, а глаза жгло, и в них словно молния блистала.
Птичка продолжала петь:
Мой отец меня же съел…
„Ах, матушка, – сказал отец, – там сидит такая славная птица и поет так прекрасно, да и солнышко так светит и греет, и благоухает тмином.“
Птичка продолжала:
Моя милая сестричка…
Сестричка, как услышала это, уткнула лицо в колени и стала плакать навзрыд, а отец, напротив того, сказал: „Я выйду, посмотрю на птичку вблизи.“ – „Ах, не ходи, не ходи! – сказала жена. – Мне кажется, что весь дом наш в пламени.“
Но муж ее не послушался, вышел из дома и взглянул на птичку, которая продолжала свою песню:
Мои косточки собрала,
Во платочек их связала
И под деревцем сложила. Чивик, чивик! Что я за славная птичка!
И, закончив песенку, птичка сбросила сверху золотую цепь прямо на шею отцу, и цепь пришлась как раз в меру.
Тогда он вернулся домой и сказал: „Посмотри, какая это чудесная птица, подарила мне прекрасную золотую цепь, да и сама-то на вид такая красивая.“ Жена же все попрежнему бегала в ужасе по всему дому и места не могла себе найти.
А птица опять завела ту же песню:
Меня мачеха убила…
„Ах, если бы я хоть в самой преисподней теперь была! Лишь бы не слыхать мне этой песни!“ – проговорила мачеха в отчаянии.
Мой отец меня же съел…
Мачеха при этих словах в изнеможении упала на пол.
Моя милая сестричка…
„Ах, – сказала сестричка, – я тоже выйду и посмотрю, не подарит ли и мне чего-нибудь птичка.“ И она вышла из дома.
Мои косточки собрала,
Во платочек их связала…
Тут сбросила она сестричке сверху красные башмачки.
И под деревцем сложила! Чивик, чивик! Что я за славная птичка!
Тогда и у сестрички на сердце стало легко и весело. Она надела новые красные башмачки и стала в них плясать и прыгать. „Ах, – сказала она, – я была так грустна, когда выходила из дому; а теперь мне так легко и хорошо! И что за славная птичка – ведь она подарила мне пару красных башмаков!“ – „Нет! – сказала ее мать и вскочила с места в ужасе, и волосы поднялись у нее дыбом на голове. – Мне кажется, что светопреставление наступило! Не могу вытерпеть: я тоже выйду из дома – быть может, и мне станет легче!“
Но чуть только она выступила за двери – тррах! Птичка скинула ей мельничий жернов на голову и раздавила им мачеху насмерть.
Отец и сестричка услыхали этот шум и выскочили из дома: из того места, где жернов упал, повалил клубами дым, потом показался огонь, вспыхнуло пламя, а когда все это закончилось, они увидели перед собою маленького братца, который взял отца и сестричку за руки, и все трое были счастливы и довольны настолько, что вошли в дом, сели за стол и принялись кушать.

Вот пришла раз мачеха в чулан, — а пасынок в это время был в школе, — и начала разбираться в своем большом, железном сундуке; приходит к ней её дочка и говорит: «Дай мне, матушка, яблочко?» Мать дала ей. «А братцу-то что ж?» — говорит девочка. Рассердилась на нее мать, отняла у ней яблоко, бросила его опять в сундук и говорит: «Хорошо, я ему дам яблоко, он старше, прежде тебя и получит».
Пришел из школы пасынок, мачеха встретила его таково ласково и говорит: «Хочешь, сыночек, яблока? Пойдем в чулан, они у меня в сундуке». Привела его мачеха в чулан, подняла крышку у сундука и говорит: «Выбирай любое». Мальчик нагнулся, а мачеха, как хлопнет крышкой, голова у пасынка и отлетела, прямо в сундук. «The Juniper Tree» (also The Almond Tree; Low German: Von dem Machandelboom) is a German fairy tale published in Low German by the Brothers Grimm in Grimm’s Fairy Tales in 1812 (KHM 47).[1] The story contains themes of child abuse, murder, cannibalism and biblical symbolism and is one of the Brothers Grimm’s darker and more mature fairy tales.
The tale is of Aarne–Thompson type 720 («The Juniper Tree»).[2] Another such tale is the English The Rose-Tree, although it reverses the sexes from The Juniper Tree; The Juniper Tree follows the more common pattern of having the dead child be a boy.[3]
Origin[edit]
The tale was published by the Brothers Grimm in the first edition of Kinder- und Hausmärchen in 1812. A somewhat different version appeared a few months earlier Johann Gustav Büsching’s Volks-Sagen, Märchen und Legenden (1812).
It was believed until the early 1870s that the Brothers Grimm re-adapted various oral recountings and fables heard from local peasants and townspeople in order to write their well-known fairy tales.[4] However, various critics including Vanessa Joosen argue that this assumption is false, based on an overwhelming amount of disputing evidence.[4] Literary critic Walter Scherf argued that the Grimm brothers were inspired by the painter Philipp Otto Runge’s original adaptation of The Juniper Tree, originally written as The Almond Tree.[5] The Grimm brothers themselves wrote in the appendix to the 1812 first edition of the KHM that the text was supplied by Philipp Otto Runge.
Synopsis[edit]
A wealthy and pious couple pray every day for God to grant them a child. One winter, under the juniper tree in the courtyard, the wife peels an apple. She cuts her finger and drops of blood fall onto the snow. This leads her to wish for a child to be as white as snow and as red as blood. Six months later, the wife becomes gravely ill from eating juniper berries and asks her husband to bury her beneath the juniper tree if she dies. A month later, she gives birth to a baby boy as white as snow and as red as blood. She dies of happiness. Keeping his promise, the husband buries her beneath the juniper tree. He eventually marries again and he and his new wife have a daughter named Marlinchen (in some versions Marlene, Marjory or Ann Marie).
The new wife loves Marlinchen but despises her stepson. She abuses him every day, claiming that she wishes Marlinchen to inherit her father’s wealth instead of her stepson. One afternoon after school, the stepmother plans to lure her stepson into an empty room containing a chest of apples. Marlinchen sees the chest and asks for an apple, which the stepmother gracefully offers. However, when the boy enters the room and reaches down the chest for an apple, the stepmother slams the lid onto his neck, decapitating him. The stepmother binds his head with the rest of his body with a bandage and props his body onto a chair outside, with an apple on his lap. Marlinchen, unaware of the situation, asks her stepbrother for an apple. Hearing no response, she is forced by her mother to box him in the ear, causing his head to roll onto the ground. Marlinchen profusely cries throughout the day whilst the stepmother dismembers the stepson’s body and cooks him into a «blood-soup» (Black Puddings Sauer/Suur) for dinner. She later deceives her husband by telling him that his son stayed at the mother’s great uncle’s house. The husband unwittingly eats the «blood-soup» (Black puddings/Sauer/Suur) during dinner and proclaims it to be delicious. Marlinchen gathers the bones from the dinner and buries them beneath the juniper tree with a handkerchief.
Suddenly, a mist emerges from the juniper tree and a beautiful bird flies out. The bird visits the local townspeople and sings about its brutal murder at the hands of its stepmother. Captivated by its lullaby, a goldsmith, a shoemaker and a miller offer the bird a gold chain, a pair of red shoes and a millstone in return for the bird singing its song again. Cannibalism[edit]
Some argue that The Juniper Tree draws cues from the short story Hansel and Gretel. Following the death of the main character, the mother (in an attempt to cover up his death) literally «chopped him in pieces, put him into the pan and… [cooked him up in blood-soup/black puddings].[6] The husband then eats the blood-soup/black pudding, saying how “delicious [the] food is,» and even asks for the wife to «give [him] some more.”[6]
Parallel between food and death[edit]
It is quite clear by the end of the tale that food is associated with death. At the beginning of the short story, the first wife is cutting an apple when she cuts her fingers and «blood [falls to] the snow.»[6] An apple later is even referred to as ushering in the Devil when the little boy comes home and the Devil figuratively makes the mother say to him, «My son, wilt thou have an apple?”[6] You could even look to the son as a source of death when he is turned into stew. Finally, a millstone is used to kill the mother. A millstone[7] is a tool typically used to grind corn.
Guardianship[edit]
Critics suggest that the character of the mother in «The Juniper Tree» is used to represent a guardian spirit. This theme of guardianship is shown throughout other Grimm fairy tales such as Cinderella, Briar Rose, and Snow White. In all of these stories, there is some object (normally represented through nature) that watches after the main character. In the case of «Briar Rose,» «the briar hedge is the symbol of nature guarding her rose: the princess who sleeps inside the castle.»[8]
Gift giving[edit]
When the son becomes a bird, he requests gifts such as a gold chain from a goldsmith and a pair of shoes for his sister. In addition, he asks for a millstone from a group of millers, which he drops on the wife’s head leading to her swift death. Critics argue that while the chain may represent power (to leave the wife), the shoes may also allude to freedom.

Song is a symbolic motif in that it served as a vessel to expose the son’s wrongful death. The bird sang this song to different townspeople in order to get gifts that he will later bestow on his sister and father after they heard the bird sing as well. This song fueled the personification of a bird, which naturally does not have the ability to communicate words to humans.

Child abuse[edit]
Child abuse is a prevalent theme shown through the stepmother constantly abusing her stepson and eventually murdering him. This theme, along with cruel oppression, is a recurring theme in the works of the Brothers Grimm, such as The Frog Prince and Rapunzel. Critic Jack Zipes suggests that the theme of child abuse leads to a more adult centered story. This veers away from the more accepted thought that fairy tales are meant for children.[9]
Personification of the Devil[edit]
The devil makes an appearance in many Grimms’ tales, often in “various disguises.”[10] He takes many identities including anything from a “little man,” to an “old goat.”[10] The stepmother’s deep disgust and violent tendencies towards the stepson play right into the mindset that she may be an offshoot of the devil himself. The stepmother offering the stepson an apple before brutally killing him and manipulating her daughter’s innocence to cover up the murder is also a direct allusion to the biblical temptation of Eve in the Garden of Eden. Near the end, the stepmother experiences «raging fires» within her veins, symbolising the weight of her sins and possibly the damnation of her soul. It is even described at one point during the story that the Devil (who is referred as the Evil One in most adaptions) has gone into her mind before her villainous breakdown.[6]
Religion[edit]
Religion plays a major symbolic role in the story. Devotion to God was often associated with purity and innocence, as shown through the boy’s biological parents and presumably, the boy himself and Marlinchen. The boy reincarnating into the bird and killing the stepmother with the millstone out of revenge can also symbolize the Holy Spirit, who is often depicted as a white dove, executing divine judgement upon the wicked. The story also takes place «well on two thousand years ago» placing it firmly in Biblical times. In most English language translations, the dish/cooking method that is described in the text is translated as «stew» or as in Margaret Hunt’s 1884 translation as «black puddings.» What is important here is that the body and the blood of the boy are cooked and consumed by the father. What is missing in most English language translations in the word «stew» is that the blood of the boy is also cooked and eaten. The symoblism in relation to the Eucharist — eating the body and drinking the blood of Christ — then become unmistakable.
Reincarnation[edit]
«In fairy tales the cycle of human life is intimately related to the cycle of nature.»[8]
Particularly seen in the Grimm Brother’s «The Juniper Tree,» reincarnation plays a major role in the tale. The audience first sees reincarnation when the first wife asks to be buried under the juniper tree. Although the mother never truly comes back to life, her spirit appears to have supernatural influence over the juniper tree, which allows her son to be physically reincarnated, as a bird and as his originally physical form, at the end of the story.
Theory of Grimm[edit]
Each Grimm tale follows a predetermined and categorical format. Every tale is based on the idea that each character is born with fault. For example, if a child is “loved by his parents, he is hated by a brother or sister.”[11] Another example could include a child “surrounded by affection.” Using the Grimm theory, the child then must be “pursued by an offense committed prior to his birth, generally by one of his family.”[11] It is this format that pushes a «coming of character moment» where the main character (in order to survive) “set[s] out on a road strew with pitfalls, pursued by an evil willpower, as if distance itself could not take him away from the fatality of [his or her] family.»[11]
Transformative bodies in Grimm[edit]
Continuous throughout each of the Grimm tales are the reappearance of transformative bodies. Critic Jeana Jorgensen, argues that there is a connection between the physical transformation of characters and their genders.[12] Drawing a connection between beauty ideals consistently being a major factor in female character development to Grimm, while transformations playing a significant role in the development of mostly male characters. She concludes that female characters are usually described with a focus on their physical attributes such as small, petite, wicked, beautiful, and ugly compared to the adjectives used in male transformations that overall relate strictly to age and size. Specifically, in The Juniper Tree, Jorgensen uses Miriam’s depiction of sorrow as a representation of the fact that in several of Grimm’s tales «suffering is written on women’s bodies in a way that naturalizes their pain and almost leads us to expect women to cry in fairy tales.»[12]
Fantasy and magic in Grimm[edit]
For the Grimm Brother’s audience «the fantasy and magic of the story can be interpreted as instruments to establish or restore social and economic justice.»[13] Roberta Markman believes that this is the case among all of the Grimm fairy tales because the creative process’ «transformative power[s]» can change social norms. As a result, literature and other creative art forms have the power to change someone’s personal attitude regarding their economic and social situations. This is especially prevalent in Grimm fairy tales where normally the character’s social and economic situation is poor at best. For example, in the Grimm’s Cinderella, Cinderella’s social situation is contingent upon her servitude to her stepmother. As an audience member, when one reads this they are reminded of how good their social situation is in comparison.
Family conflict in Grimm[edit]
There is an apparent parallel between Grimm’s The Juniper Tree and his previous works, familial drama. Critic Walter Scherf in a study of the introductions of children’s literature, noted that out of 176 texts, 169 of them started with a basic family conflict.[5] Similar to the plot in Juniper Tree, in Grimm’s Hansel and Gretel, the children live with their stepmother who does not like them, and makes a plan to get rid of them. She states that in the morning she and her husband will take the children into the thickest part of the forest and leave them there, with the intention that they won’t be able to find their way back, and end up starving to death.[14] In comparison to the Stepmother in The Juniper Tree who wanted her daughter to inherit everything from the Father, killing the Son in order to guarantee this possibility.
Original translation and background[edit]
The Juniper Tree is both the title of the collection and a piece of prose within the book. The collection of short stories was not written by the Grimm brothers, but instead collected from “various sources… many of which were the original authors.”[15] In total, there are twenty-seven short stories spanning three hundred and thirty-three pages. The Grimm brothers also used illustrations to add to the overall work. According to Grimm, the «illustrations [used are] delicate in detail, imaginative in concept, and truly beautiful.»[6]

Alfred and Mary Elizabeth David[edit]
In Alfred and Elizabeth David’s essay, they interpret «The Juniper Tree» as «folk literature for inspiration.» They believe that the nature and native culture presented in most Grimm fairy tale inspires other artists in their literary endeavors[8] In «The Juniper Tree,» this theme of nature is present. The Grimm Brothers use the juniper tree as a life source for the mother and the son. The use of nature as a life source inspired other literary work such as «Briar Rose».
Maria Tatar[edit]
Many folklorists interpret evil stepmothers as stemming from actual competition between a woman and her stepchildren for resources. In this tale, the motive is made explicit: the stepmother wants her daughter to inherit everything.[16]
The millstone in the story would have had biblical connotations for the readers of the Grimms’ days, especially as the verse Luke 17:2 says that anyone who causes a child to sin would be better off being thrown into the sea with a millstone about his neck; both refer to a millstone as a punishment for those who harm the young and innocent.[17] Another biblical connotation could be the offering of the apple from the stepmother, possessed by the devil, to the son, which parallels the devil, disguised as a serpent, offering the forbidden fruit (traditionally an apple) to Eve.
J. R .R Tolkien[edit]
In his essay «On Fairy-Stories», J. R. R. Tolkien cited The Juniper Tree as an example of the evils of censorship for children; many versions in his day omitted the stew, and Tolkien thought children should not be spared it, unless they were spared the whole fairy tale.[18]
Adaptations[edit]
Throughout the centuries, the Grimm Brothers fairy tales have been retold and adapted by an abundance of sources. The story was adapted:
- For the book Grimm Fairy Tales. The story goes: an evil stepmother kills her stepson and makes her daughter think that she killed him. The stepmother than cooks him for dinner for the rest of the family. Her daughter finds her stepbrother’s bones and puts them underneath the juniper tree. -A.K
- By Barbara Comyns Carr in her novel, The Juniper Tree, published by Methuen in 1985. In Comyns Carr’s adaptation the stepmother is a sympathetic character and the son’s death an accident. Whereas in Grimm’s fairy tale it is Marlene (the daughter) who buries the bones of the son, Comyns Carr makes Marlene ignorant of the death and has the stepmother, desperate to prevent her husband from finding out and in the throes of a nervous breakdown, bury the little boy under the juniper tree. At the end of the adaptation, the stepmother does not die but is treated and begins a new life. The Juniper Tree was Barbara Comyns Carr’s first novel after an 18-year hiatus in her work and was described in The Financial Times, at the time of publication, as «delicate, tough, quick-moving …. haunting».[19]

«The Juniper Tree» (also The Almond Tree; Low German: Von dem Machandelboom) is a German fairy tale published in Low German by the Brothers Grimm in Grimm’s Fairy Tales in 1812 (KHM 47).[1] The story contains themes of child abuse, murder, cannibalism and biblical symbolism and is one of the Brothers Grimm’s darker and more mature fairy tales.
The tale is of Aarne–Thompson type 720 («The Juniper Tree»).[2] Another such tale is the English The Rose-Tree, although it reverses the sexes from The Juniper Tree; The Juniper Tree follows the more common pattern of having the dead child be a boy.[3]
Origin[edit]
The tale was published by the Brothers Grimm in the first edition of Kinder- und Hausmärchen in 1812. A somewhat different version appeared a few months earlier Johann Gustav Büsching’s Volks-Sagen, Märchen und Legenden (1812).
It was believed until the early 1870s that the Brothers Grimm re-adapted various oral recountings and fables heard from local peasants and townspeople in order to write their well-known fairy tales.[4] However, various critics including Vanessa Joosen argue that this assumption is false, based on an overwhelming amount of disputing evidence.[4] Literary critic Walter Scherf argued that the Grimm brothers were inspired by the painter Philipp Otto Runge’s original adaptation of The Juniper Tree, originally written as The Almond Tree.[5] The Grimm brothers themselves wrote in the appendix to the 1812 first edition of the KHM that the text was supplied by Philipp Otto Runge.
Synopsis[edit]
A wealthy and pious couple pray every day for God to grant them a child. One winter, under the juniper tree in the courtyard, the wife peels an apple. She cuts her finger and drops of blood fall onto the snow. This leads her to wish for a child to be as white as snow and as red as blood. Six months later, the wife becomes gravely ill from eating juniper berries and asks her husband to bury her beneath the juniper tree if she dies. A month later, she gives birth to a baby boy as white as snow and as red as blood. She dies of happiness. Keeping his promise, the husband buries her beneath the juniper tree. He eventually marries again and he and his new wife have a daughter named Marlinchen (in some versions Marlene, Marjory or Ann Marie).
The new wife loves Marlinchen but despises her stepson. She abuses him every day, claiming that she wishes Marlinchen to inherit her father’s wealth instead of her stepson. One afternoon after school, the stepmother plans to lure her stepson into an empty room containing a chest of apples. Marlinchen sees the chest and asks for an apple, which the stepmother gracefully offers. However, when the boy enters the room and reaches down the chest for an apple, the stepmother slams the lid onto his neck, decapitating him. The stepmother binds his head with the rest of his body with a bandage and props his body onto a chair outside, with an apple on his lap. Marlinchen, unaware of the situation, asks her stepbrother for an apple. Hearing no response, she is forced by her mother to box him in the ear, causing his head to roll onto the ground. Marlinchen profusely cries throughout the day whilst the stepmother dismembers the stepson’s body and cooks him into a «blood-soup» (Black Puddings Sauer/Suur) for dinner. She later deceives her husband by telling him that his son stayed at the mother’s great uncle’s house. The husband unwittingly eats the «blood-soup» (Black puddings/Sauer/Suur) during dinner and proclaims it to be delicious. Marlinchen gathers the bones from the dinner and buries them beneath the juniper tree with a handkerchief.
Suddenly, a mist emerges from the juniper tree and a beautiful bird flies out. The bird visits the local townspeople and sings about its brutal murder at the hands of its stepmother. Captivated by its lullaby, a goldsmith, a shoemaker and a miller offer the bird a gold chain, a pair of red shoes and a millstone in return for the bird singing its song again. The boy reincarnating into the bird and killing the stepmother with the millstone out of revenge can also symbolize the Holy Spirit, who is often depicted as a white dove, executing divine judgement upon the wicked. The story also takes place «well on two thousand years ago» placing it firmly in Biblical times. In most English language translations, the dish/cooking method that is described in the text is translated as «stew» or as in Margaret Hunt’s 1884 translation as «black puddings.» What is important here is that the body and the blood of the boy are cooked and consumed by the father. What is missing in most English language translations in the word «stew» is that the blood of the boy is also cooked and eaten. The symoblism in relation to the Eucharist — eating the body and drinking the blood of Christ — then become unmistakable.
Reincarnation[edit]
«In fairy tales the cycle of human life is intimately related to the cycle of nature.»[8]
Particularly seen in the Grimm Brother’s «The Juniper Tree,» reincarnation plays a major role in the tale. The audience first sees reincarnation when the first wife asks to be buried under the juniper tree. Although the mother never truly comes back to life, her spirit appears to have supernatural influence over the juniper tree, which allows her son to be physically reincarnated, as a bird and as his originally physical form, at the end of the story.
Theory of Grimm[edit]
Each Grimm tale follows a predetermined and categorical format. Every tale is based on the idea that each character is born with fault. For example, if a child is “loved by his parents, he is hated by a brother or sister.”[11] Another example could include a child “surrounded by affection.” Using the Grimm theory, the child then must be “pursued by an offense committed prior to his birth, generally by one of his family.”[11] It is this format that pushes a «coming of character moment» where the main character (in order to survive) “set[s] out on a road strew with pitfalls, pursued by an evil willpower, as if distance itself could not take him away from the fatality of [his or her] family.»[11]
Transformative bodies in Grimm[edit]
Continuous throughout each of the Grimm tales are the reappearance of transformative bodies. Critic Jeana Jorgensen, argues that there is a connection between the physical transformation of characters and their genders.[12] Drawing a connection between beauty ideals consistently being a major factor in female character development to Grimm, while transformations playing a significant role in the development of mostly male characters. She concludes that female characters are usually described with a focus on their physical attributes such as small, petite, wicked, beautiful, and ugly compared to the adjectives used in male transformations that overall relate strictly to age and size. Specifically, in The Juniper Tree, Jorgensen uses Miriam’s depiction of sorrow as a representation of the fact that in several of Grimm’s tales «suffering is written on women’s bodies in a way that naturalizes their pain and almost leads us to expect women to cry in fairy tales.»[12]
Fantasy and magic in Grimm[edit]
For the Grimm Brother’s audience «the fantasy and magic of the story can be interpreted as instruments to establish or restore social and economic justice.»[13] Roberta Markman believes that this is the case among all of the Grimm fairy tales because the creative process’ «transformative power[s]» can change social norms. As a result, literature and other creative art forms have the power to change someone’s personal attitude regarding their economic and social situations. This is especially prevalent in Grimm fairy tales where normally the character’s social and economic situation is poor at best. For example, in the Grimm’s Cinderella, Cinderella’s social situation is contingent upon her servitude to her stepmother. As an audience member, when one reads this they are reminded of how good their social situation is in comparison.
Family conflict in Grimm[edit]
There is an apparent parallel between Grimm’s The Juniper Tree and his previous works, familial drama. Critic Walter Scherf in a study of the introductions of children’s literature, noted that out of 176 texts, 169 of them started with a basic family conflict.[5] Similar to the plot in Juniper Tree, in Grimm’s Hansel and Gretel, the children live with their stepmother who does not like them, and makes a plan to get rid of them. She states that in the morning she and her husband will take the children into the thickest part of the forest and leave them there, with the intention that they won’t be able to find their way back, and end up starving to death.[14] In comparison to the Stepmother in The Juniper Tree who wanted her daughter to inherit everything from the Father, killing the Son in order to guarantee this possibility.
Original translation and background[edit]
The Juniper Tree is both the title of the collection and a piece of prose within the book. The collection of short stories was not written by the Grimm brothers, but instead collected from “various sources… many of which were the original authors.”[15] In total, there are twenty-seven short stories spanning three hundred and thirty-three pages. The Grimm brothers also used illustrations to add to the overall work. According to Grimm, the «illustrations [used are] delicate in detail, imaginative in concept, and truly beautiful.»[6]

Alfred and Mary Elizabeth David[edit]
In Alfred and Elizabeth David’s essay, they interpret «The Juniper Tree» as «folk literature for inspiration.» They believe that the nature and native culture presented in most Grimm fairy tale inspires other artists in their literary endeavors[8] In «The Juniper Tree,» this theme of nature is present. The Grimm Brothers use the juniper tree as a life source for the mother and the son. The use of nature as a life source inspired other literary work such as «Briar Rose».
Maria Tatar[edit]
Many folklorists interpret evil stepmothers as stemming from actual competition between a woman and her stepchildren for resources. In this tale, the motive is made explicit: the stepmother wants her daughter to inherit everything.[16]
The millstone in the story would have had biblical connotations for the readers of the Grimms’ days, especially as the verse Luke 17:2 says that anyone who causes a child to sin would be better off being thrown into the sea with a millstone about his neck; both refer to a millstone as a punishment for those who harm the young and innocent.[17] Another biblical connotation could be the offering of the apple from the stepmother, possessed by the devil, to the son, which parallels the devil, disguised as a serpent, offering the forbidden fruit (traditionally an apple) to Eve.
J. R .R Tolkien[edit]
In his essay «On Fairy-Stories», J. R. R. Tolkien cited The Juniper Tree as an example of the evils of censorship for children; many versions in his day omitted the stew, and Tolkien thought children should not be spared it, unless they were spared the whole fairy tale.[18]
Adaptations[edit]
Throughout the centuries, the Grimm Brothers fairy tales have been retold and adapted by an abundance of sources. The story was adapted:
- For the book Grimm Fairy Tales. The story goes: an evil stepmother kills her stepson and makes her daughter think that she killed him. The stepmother than cooks him for dinner for the rest of the family. Her daughter finds her stepbrother’s bones and puts them underneath the juniper tree. -A.K
- By Barbara Comyns Carr in her novel, The Juniper Tree, published by Methuen in 1985. In Comyns Carr’s adaptation the stepmother is a sympathetic character and the son’s death an accident. Whereas in Grimm’s fairy tale it is Marlene (the daughter) who buries the bones of the son, Comyns Carr makes Marlene ignorant of the death and has the stepmother, desperate to prevent her husband from finding out and in the throes of a nervous breakdown, bury the little boy under the juniper tree. At the end of the adaptation, the stepmother does not die but is treated and begins a new life. The Juniper Tree was Barbara Comyns Carr’s first novel after an 18-year hiatus in her work and was described in The Financial Times, at the time of publication, as «delicate, tough, quick-moving …. haunting».[19]
- As The Juniper Tree, an opera in two acts by Philip Glass & Robert Moran, (1985); libretto by Arthur Yorinks.
- For BBC Radio 3 by Peter Redgrove in 1987 and directed by Brian Miller as part of a series of plays drawn from the Grimm fairy tales,[20] with Jennifer Piercey, Deborah Makepeace, Michael McStay and Abigail Docherty.
- As the 1990 Icelandic film The Juniper Tree, based on the Grimm Brothers’ tale, starring Björk as a visionary young girl whose mother has been put to death as a witch.[21]
- Micheline Lanctôt’s 2003 film Juniper Tree (Le piège d’Issoudun) juxtaposes a straight dramatization of the fairy tale with an original dramatic story exploring some of the same themes in a realistic contemporary setting.[22]
- In the story «The Crabapple Tree», by Robert Coover, appearing in the January 12, 2015, issue of The New Yorker.[23]
- English folk singer Emily Portman sings a version of the story called «Stick Stock».
- The book The Grimm Conclusion (by Adam Gidwitz) was based on this fairy tale.
- For a collection of fairy tales created by Lore Segal and Maurice Sendak entitled The Juniper Tree.[9]
- Lorrie Moore published a short story entitled «The Juniper Tree,» dedicated to the late Nietzchka Keene, director of the film The Juniper Tree. In the story, a red-haired playwright (apparently based on Keene) appears on the night after her death to visit her friends.[24]
